Recording on a video camera. Someone admits to harassment. The harassment was through text messages. About 350 text messages and 20 restricted phone calls were made to the individual in less then 48 hours. The harasser does not know he or she has been recorded. The individual saved a majority of the text messages and printed them out. Is it illegal to record the harasser confession? The harasser admitted to texting the individual phone and calling on a block number. I just need to know what the law is in Florida for this. This is not a confession for Church.

Answer
Recording some one and not telling them is not usable in court. But you can you use that as evidence against the person by showing it to someone. The easiest thing to do is get your number changed on the cell phone which may be done for free the first time due to a harassment issue. Filling for a temporary restraining order can be done by a police officer coming to your house and that police can see the tape.

puppyrjjkm

I have a Sony 30GB handycam video camera. I use it a ton for taping live concerts. We sit further in the back so the camera isn't "blown away" but there is still a TON of static when I play it back on my computer. How can I get rid of it? Is there some program I can download or something?

Answer
Static? As in the audio is poor?

Yes - that happens when you don't have manual audio control and the audio is REALLY loud the auto mic gain circuit is being overwhelmed and what you are hearing - that you call statis - is "clipping". The audio probably sounds pretty muddy, too.

You did not tell us the MODEL of that Sony camcorder. Most consumer cams have no manual audio control - the least expensive ones with manual audio control are the Canon HV20/HV30/HV40 and the Sony HDR-HC9... BUT, *some Sony camcorders have a "MicRefLevel" setting in the menu that is designed for loud audio environments. "Normal" for... um... normal levels of audio and "Low" gain for high audio levels.

How to get to "MicRefLevel" and how to use that will be in the camcorder handbook. If you don't have the manual, go to the Sony website's support area, look up the camcorder model and download it...

Your other option is to use a field recorder like those from Edirol, M-Audio or Zoom (among many others) and replace the video's audio with the audio from the field recorder - when you edit the video.

As a hard disc camcorder, I am surprised you are able to record under the loud audio conditions - typically, the hard drive heads park under this high level of prolonged vibration and you get a "buffer overflow" message...

If you record a live concert using a stereo mic why does it not sound as good when played back at home?

kollydogg

I recorded a live concert and when I played it at home the low frequencies are not how the sounded at the concert. The bass is fuzzy and not powerful. Would it help if i played it through really big speakers rather than normal hifi ones? Your advice would be appreciated. Also can you recommend good mic to use when recording a concert? 10 points for most informative response.

Answer
Your problem can be seen all over youtube. Many people record concerts with video cameras and such and get horrible results. The reason that your microphone doesn't sound like a Professional one is because of many things.

First, your microphone is probably not professional grade. And when I mean professional, I mean shure and other major company branded.
However, even that probably won't compare to a pro recording because your recording probably has a lot of background noise of people screaming and such.

Lastly, in professional recordings of concerts, everything is balanced through equalizers, mixer, and all other equipment. They have the capability of changing single channels to record what they want to hear. This means that every different audio source has its own volume and such. For example, say we have a guitar, piano, and a mic. With multichannel's, we can lower the volume and the guitar while keeping same volume for the piano and mic. All of these sources get put into mixers and exported to three places, the audience sound system, the on stage sound system, and a computer which records everything.

Also, your mic probably has a specific range it records at. Most like it does not record long ranges. The Manuel's of professional grade mics have diagrams of which areas around the mic are recorded at optimal performance.

I'm going to a concert soon at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. This is what the website said about cameras, "Still cameras (non-professional) are allowed at sporting events, including Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Dream games. Professional cameras and any audio and video recording devices are prohibited at all events." and I have a Canon Rebel T3. Am I allowed to bring this camera to the arena, or a I not? HELP PLEASE!

Answer
As Crim previously stated, the T3 is not a professional camera, but security guards generally classify any big looking camera as "professional." They might even consider a Powershot a professional model... Just take a little point & shoot or use your cell phone

I just recently bought an electret condenser microphone and it sits on top of my camera and records audio better.

However, when I playback my videos, there's no sound at all.

It's definitely on and supposedly working, my thought is they're stored as files somewhere on my computer?

I just want to sync the video with the audio that is being recorded on a separate microphone and not on the camera itself.

Thanks

Answer
You say "I just recently bought an electret condenser microphone and it sits on top of my camera and records audio better. " Is it plugged into your camera or some other recording device?

"when I playback my videos, there's no sound at all." Play back on what?

"my thought is they're stored as files somewhere on my computer? " How did they get to the computer?

"sync the video with the audio that is being recorded on a separate microphone and not on the camera itself." What do you mean by "recorded on a separate microphone"? Does this mean you have three mic's, - the camera mic, the one mounted on the camera and the separate one?
If the camera mounted mic is plugged into the camera the audio should be with the video.

Is it illegal for store security cameras to record audio?

Carol Ine

Most stores have some sort of security system that involves video surveillance. But is it illegal for the cameras to also be recording audio - and the employees monitoring those cameras thus listening to private conversations? Or are customers foregoing such rights to privacy once they enter the store?

Answer
Yes, in some states it is illegal to record ANY person's voice without their consent. This is the law in Massachusetts, found under the wiretapping statutes. It doesn't matter if you're in public, on private property or in the back seat of a police car; recording your voice requires your consent (implied if not actual).

If there are signs or other notices specifically warning you, in your language and in Braille, that your entry into the store constitutes consent to be recorded, then they can raise that as their defense to criminal charges.

I realize that the Samsung Array does not support watching streaming videos. But it seems to me that since it has a built in camera that can record videos, that if I can get a video file converted into the right format that I should I should be able to watch it on my phone.

Video recorded on the Samsung Array is saved with the extention .3G2 and the max length seems to be 1 hour.

I want to be able to take .flv and .mp4 videos, approx 45 minutes long, and convert them into a format that will play off of the microSD card on my Samsung Array. I can use a desktop pc to do the converting.

Please help!

Answer
I have the Samsung Array myself that I use with Ting Wireless, so I know what you mean.

With how low resolution the screen is, and how short of a battery life the phone has (compared to most smartphones), I do not feel the amount of effort needed to convert and downgrading the resolution on the phone is worth it. I would recommend getting a better phone, a portable DVD player or an iPod that supports video, as that would be easier and more enjoyable than the small low-res screen that is on the Array.

When you get pulled over are you allowed to video tape the whole scenario?

Charles

I was wondering if you could use your cell phone video camera to record your whole interaction with the officer when getting pulled over.

Answer
Video, certainly - Audio is another matter. Technically speaking, video recording from the public domain (far less from your private car) is fair game at any time and is admissible. Audio on the other hand requires consent (or in some cases notice) to be admissible in court.

Two possible ways around this is a notice placed in a location visible from outside of your car (it does not have to be too overt) stating something to the effect of, "Vehicle equipped with audio/video recorders that may be used at any time."

The second is to inform the officer that he is being recoded AFTER you start. Given that it is your private car, they cannot tell you to turn it off and notice makes the recoding admissible. The problem is that you are almost certain to make the officer unhappy.

I think that recoding of police incidents is very important - many times I have seen officers bend the truth or mis-quote what a suspect had said. Their reports are taken as Gospel at court and the only way to disprove them is to have a recording - 20 witnesses on your behalf will not be as convincing.

Why should you not rely on police recorders? Well, first of all not all officers have them. Second, not all officers use them when they have them. Third, the officer knows when he turns the recorder on and off and behaves accordingly. I know of cases where the officers did a behaved improperly, plain lied and threatened a person and when the audio and video were subpoenaed, they were either edited to not show the time in question or the recoding simply didnât take place from the beginning of the incident.

P&S cameras (actually all camera lenses) have a minimum focal distance. For example the Samsung SL600 is 31.5" on normal and 39.4" on telephoto.

You would need to look up the specs for your particular model.

I am in the market for a camera that does good video. I guess I am trying to figure out why anyone would purchase a camcorder when for about the same price they could purchase a high zoom point and shoot camera (that does video and takes great still shots). Just wondering if I am missing something. . . I mean if they both shoot 1080p video and both have a 30x optical zoom wouldn't they be the same from a video standpoint?

Answer
It's a good question, and the answer lies partly in the handling and partly in the quality of the results.
Under handling the PS camera lacks the very useful adjustable angle viewfinder, and also generally lacks control over the sound recording - sometimes it is only mono sound. The noise of the zoom motor may be picked up by the microphone. Another feature is that video shooting may be very hard on battery life. Camcorder batteries are generally rather bigger than PS camera batteries.
Under quality there is the issue of the codecs used for compressing the vast amounts of data that video shooting entails. One may find non-standard frame rates or other awkwardnesses to edit.

my friend's band wants to record a live show. i have a flip camera, but i am not sure it will work well with loud noises. does it take good quality sound videos in that circumstance?

Answer
I would worry more about the lighting than the sound.
Flip cameras have no flash, so unless the band will be well lighted, the picture will be dark and grainy. Make sure you are close to the band so the scene is well lighted. This should help with the sound as well.
However, you should really consider rending a high caliber professional camera. Flip is a toy.

What are some ways I can effectively use technology in my classroom?

kthnxby!

I'm in an Instructional Technology class at my university and we are learning about implementing technology into the classroom. I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas on how to do this. Thanks!

Answer
Since you are in a college class, we can just assume that the classroom teacher has access to things I will mention. Here are some that I have actually used these in my first grade classroom.

My teacher desktop computer is connected to the flatscreen TV mounted on the wall as well as to the overhead projector onto the smart board. That means I can run a DVD in my computer and it shows on the TV or the Smart Board. I can create an interactive lesson for the SmartBoard, using touch screen to work through the lesson. I can create power points for lesson materials. We have access to online downloads of lesson supporting videos for the TV.

At our computer pod with three student computers, I can assign each student to do certain lessons in the online programs that my district buys. They can take Accelerated Reader online tests or do Compass Lessons. They can work on Kid Pics frames, including importing photos, and create a frame that supports a story or other lesson. These are saved on their district files.

I use digital camera to record videos of class presentations and then we share them through the computers. I have a class website that is updated weekly with information about classroom projects, activities, current lesson summaries for parents. I also have an archive of every parent newsletter ever sent home that can be accessed from home, as well as full unit outlines of every subject, and other parent information,

We use an online grading system so I have to enter the grades for every subject. Beginning in grade 3 in my school, parents can access this from home. I have to enter the comments for the report cards. Then the office prints out the report cards.

Some reference and lesson materials are available on all-share for all teachers to access. The entire policy manual as well as the entire curriculum for every grade and every subject are available on the district site accessible only on a school computer.

How can I set up my English classroom for a short play?

complete_f

We were assigned a short production in my high school English class, about 20-25 minutes. The setting is Upper East Side Manhattan, think Gossip Girl. The predicament is we don't know how to set up our bland classroom into the inside of a posh NYC apartment. Does anyone have good ideas for how to design this scenario, what props to use, how to make a backdrop? It's a modern take on Shakespeare's 12th Night.

Answer
when i think NYC and Gossip Girl, I'd say:

- get a curtain that'll fit into the window frame on a curtain rod or just duct tape it up, with a fancy print on it. if u have to buy one, u could always return it.

- little side table or stool with modern vase with flowers (for example, tall clear rectangle vase, a few calla lilies) and some fashion magazines (if u dont have any, borrow some from the library)

- fashionable rug thats 5' x 3' or something. (also returnable, just make sure u keep it clean)

- nice-looking armchair or small loveseat, even a fancy bench. if u only have a plain one of these, drape a patterned sheet or think blanket over it.

- for a backdrop, if u teacher has a Smartboard, put up a pic of an aerial view of NYC skyscrapers. if not, use a projector to project such image onto the whiteboard.

-for a nice touch, get some typical NYC background sound playing (whether off a laptop or ipod w/ speakers). you know, car horns honking, bus sounds, car alarms going off, brakes. if ur not all that computer savvy, record some sounds off your computer thats playing youtube videos with those sounds with a camera (that can record sound, obviously) or just sit in a bus stop and record street noises.

Hi want to record a video of myself for a speech with my DSLR (Nikon5100) sitting inside my living room. There is a fair bit of noise from the ongoing traffic on the road as my house is just on the side of the main road.
I would like to use an external microphone and was wondering if anyone can suggest which one to go for: Shotgun boom mic or condenser mic or may be lapel mic. If its not a lapel mic, I'll be hanging it in front of my forehead just so that it is not visible on the video.

Please suggest.

Best answer gets 5 points, spam messages get reported.

Thanks

Answer
Hi chatman & robin - you don't have to spend a lot of money to record a speech with your D5100. Here is a video I shot to show that you can get decent sound with a lavalier/lapel mic plugged directly into a DSLR (shot in response to someone who asked me whether a lapel mic plugged into the camera was good enough for a Kickstarter campaign):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slRrwUiMGIw

I had a head cold when I recorded this, so I apologize for my pitiful voice and the multiple layers of clothing :)

I used a lapel mic running straight into the camera, with the camera's audio sensitivity set to "low" - something you can also do with the D5100.

I recommend the Olympus ME-15 with 1m cable - it is a high quality lapel mic at an affordable price (UK and US prices below).

You will also need an extension cable and mono to stereo adapter jack to go from the lapel mic's mono output to the stereo input on your camera.

I hope this is helpful, and Happy New Year!

Bill

P.S. - I hope your speech is shorter than 20 minutes - the D5100 has a 20 minute clip length limit unless you hack your camera: http://simeonpilgrim.com/blog/2012/03/30/nikon-d5100-video-beta-testers-wanted/ :)

Help again, please i'm running out of time?

What's the best camcorder for 2012 from consumer review and every ones else in the $250 to $325 out there in 2012?

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video.http://simplevideoediting.com/learn/part1_camcorder_choices.htm

Is a Canon Powershot SX40 HS considered a professional camera?

Stephanie

I intend to use it at a concert and I'm not sure if it is considered a "professional" camera.

MSG Camera Policy

Cameras
Video cameras, mono pods, tripods, audio recording devices and cameras with professional telephoto or zoom lenses are inside MSG at any time. This policy will be strictly enforced. You may bring in non professional or disposable cameras. However, for some events, cameras of any type and/or flash photography may be completely prohibited. Any photos taken are for personal use only and may not be sold, licensed or distributed.

Answer
As others have said, it's not a camera that a professional would use, but the phrase "professional telephoto or zoom lens" is ambiguous and your average bouncer probably won't know the difference between a proper DSLR with a long telephoto zoom and a bridge camera with a long zoom either. The SX40 HS is quite a large camera and they might object to that.

It also says " for some events, cameras of any type and/or flash photography may be completely prohibited" - are you sure your concert is not one of those events?

I don't want to lug around a still camera and a pocket HD video camera. Is the video recording on the new digital point & shoots comparable to the Flip and it's competitors, or is a dedicated video camera better?

Answer
the video quality of most digital point and shoot cameras is about equivilent to the quality of the flip video. it may be even better if the digital camera will shoot HD Video (720 or 1080)
Neither of these will compare to the quality of the better traditional video camera's which are available today.
Another thing you may want to consider is a Digital SLR which has HD Video shooting, such as the Canon T1i or T21 or the Nikon D5000.
These will take video that is superior to anything but professional HD video cameras, for a very reasonable price.
The user interface will take some getting used to, since the camera won't auto focus while shooting, and the zoom function will be performed by rotating the zoom dial on the lens, but I can attest that the video quality is supurb.

what is a good canon digital camera to buy?

I am looking for a new camera, and I know that canon's are the best kind out there. So I was wondering what kind of camera to get. I want it to be pocket size and have good HD quality and good to use in low light, with HD video recording as well. Any suggestions?
And I am hoping it to be $250 or less if that is possible.

Answer
canon ixus series is the best suggestion for you

My husband and I are expecting a baby in 8 weeks and are looking into purchasing a video camera. So many options out there right now. We need something more on the simple side. We were thinking about a Sony, but not sure..any suggestions? Hard Disk or DVD style?

Answer
You should buy either a hdd or a mini dv tape recorder. Alot of people say mini dv brings good quality. But so does HDD, hard disk drive. Dvd isn't great because it doesn't record for a long time and that a special moment might be missed because the dvd ran out of space. Furthermore, Hdd is better because you don't want to be dealing with messy tapes and an hour recording for each tape. Hdd has good quality also. I suggest you also buy sony camcorders because they last long and they do have good quality. Also get standard defintion because high defintion isn't great, you can't watch it on normal dvd players and your computer must pack some punch or a good processor to handle hd. So go with standard defintion.
For sony, I would recommend you the dcr-sr300 and i have it for about a week and its great. If you live in New york city, you can go to J and R world, or order online at jrworld because its alot cheaper. about 100 dollars cheaper. Also, its the same thing as circuit city and best buy. To me circuit city and bestbuy in stores suck because their return policy isn't that great, 15% they keep when you decide to return the camcorder. Also, their modals tend to be old and aren't that great. So either order online with bestbuy, etc other companies or find a camcorder near a store near you. Don't go to those store that aren't well knowned, such as those stupid stores on the corner selling electronics.

Addition: go to cnet.com and check the reviews and peoples' opinion before buying a camcorder. Maybe another brand than sony might be better. Camcorders varies but I think Sony is one of the best out there.

Hoped I help you and have a safe pregnancy with your wonderful baby! =)

Looking for a video camera that has flash, or a flash can be added?

I need a new video camera for my baby's 1st birthday. I need something that can take good videos when the lighting isn't that good. I want something that either has a flash built in or I can attach a flash to it. I need something not crazy expensive, but something good. Thanks!!

Answer
Don't use flash with a video camera, flash is for still photography. What you need is a video light. No need to think expensive here, a Clamp on, $12 light from your local Hardware Store, a bulb, another $10 or so, done.

HD camcorders interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video.

Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video.
