I'm looking for a good video camera under $600 to record an instructional DVD. It will be on a tripod, so it's not going to really need the ability to film sports or anything. Just good quality video and color. Any suggestions?
Thank you!

Answer
Pretty much any camcorder in this price range will provide similar video quality - though personally, I would suggest you stay with miniDV tape based camcorders because miniDV tape - specifically the DV format stored to the tape - does not compress the digital video data as much a a hard disc drive (HDD) or flash memory based camcorder in the same range.

Your biggest issue will be to have good lighting on your side. I think the Panasonic PV-GS320, Sony DCR-HC52 and Canon ZR900 and ZR930 are good candidates. With the GS320 and HC52, you should also include a field recorder for the audio - M-Audio, Zoom, Edirol and others make decent units. This is because the GS-320 and HC52 do not have a mic-jack. You want to get the mic as close as possible to the person speaking - so in this case, that means getting the camcorder close for the built-in mics. When you edit the video, replace the camcorder audio with the audio from the field recorder.

The ZR900 and ZR930 have a mic jack (in addition to their built-in mics), so mic placement does not need to coincide with camcorder placement.

Since you should be editing, a DVD based camcorder immediately drops from the list and should not be considered.

What video camera should I buy to record YouTube videos?

Quinn

I'm trying to get a video camera that would be good to upload vids to YouTube. Not that expensive, just good quality.

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

DSLR Cameras, all Makes, all Models, all have the same problem when video taping some long videos, all overheat at the 13 to 18 minute mark, depending on the Make and Model. This is unavoidable, it all has to with the fact, video is an afterthought in DSLR camera production.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes – four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

Im thinking of doing some covers on youtube singing or playing piano or guitar not sure yet, what video camera should i use i have a camera already but it dont pick up sound well and its not in HD.

Answer
It doesnt really matter what kind you get. Sony is a good brand if you want to try them. Make sure you ask how well the audio records and if it recordes in HD.

What should I use to record Vocals and Piano at home?

Q. I have a Youtube channel. I've been using my webcam to upload my music but the quality is TERRIBLE. My piano sounds like death. What are so inexpensive things I could use to record myself, and maybe sound a bit better? I have a nice video camera. But what about a microphone, or things like that..

Answer
If you're looking for something cheap, a USB mic is the way to go. Good ones: Blue Snowball, Blue yeti, AT2020.
A better but more expensive way:
Audio interface (Mackie Blackjack or Focusrite Scarlett 2i2) + Blue encore 100

Message to Kalvin: Don't "thumb down" other answers just because you think your answer is the best. Of course the Snowball (and any other USB mic) won't get pro results, but it is cheap and is enough for someone who just want something better than a webcam mic.
In a perfect world everyone should be using a U87 connected to a UA preamp, but that's not how it works in the real world.

There are a couple ways to do this. One is to sync the iPhone & computer using iTunes. Another is to open the picture or video, and email it. And lastly, another way is to connect the iPhone to a windows computer without itunes, select use as camera or open files when windows recognizes it as a new device, and copy them over.

one of the better products in this price range is the Casio Exilim EX-Z80... it has a youtube capture (640x480 @30fps) ...it also records in a higher Wide VGA (848 x 480 @ 30 fps), perfect for watching video on a widescreen monitor or TV. and it records to the H.264/AVC AAC, MOV format... which will allow the video to be transfered to Apple multimedia devices directly without being re-encoded. There are a number of cameras that record video to other formats...such as MJPEG and Quicktime...but the audio portion is usually WAV... and that audio format uses up more space and conversion is needed when watching on PMP devices. Its currently on sale at B&H for $140. This camera is also not a slacker when it comes to other features , face detection, and image quality. Another nice unique feature for video fans is a dedicated Movie button. No need to dig though screen menus and you can go from shutter button to movie button instantly!

how good is the quality of a video recorded from photo digital cameras?

PATUK R

how good is the quality of a video recorded from photo digital cameras?.. let´s say compared to a standard 8mm video camera or similar

Answer
The 'video' from a digital camera can be very good (depending on which brand and how heavily the video is compressed).
Canon make some of the best quality 'video' available. You just need to make sure the camera can record video at 640X480 at 30fps. (you can have smaller video at 320X240 at 60fps).

But of course the video from a digital handycam will always be better.

best digital video camera for recording sports image

Motorpsych

I'm ready to buy a digital camera but I would like to get an opinion from the masses.

Heres the scenario...I ride a sport bike and I plan on mounting a digital/video camera to my bike while I ride. The video length needs to be longer than just 30 seconds. I also want good quality picture capabilities as well. I'm hoping to spend no more than $275.

Any suggestions?

Answer
If you buy a digital camera that also shoots 'video'...then make sure it has a resolution of at least 640X480 at 30fps...and also records audio.
Canon is a very good brand that takes high quality 'video'.
The newer ones can record 1GB at a time (about 8 minutes)...and others have no limitations except for the memory card you are using (up to 4 GB).
Obviously digicams can not compete with dedicated video cameras (handycams) for video quality...so keep that in mind.
Frankly, I do not know how a digicam will handle the 'rough treatment' while connected to a sport bike, but good luck anyway.

video camera high quality for low price?

ballerkate

I need to find a fairly inexpensive digital video camera.

I will use it to compile sports tape, so it must take good quality video.
I will also use it for 2 school video projects which, mean i need to be able to upload video to the school computers for editing.

What is the best digital video camera i can get for a fairly low price?

Answer
Ok.. given school, you need to be sure you're getting a camcorder that can work with the school computers. Most will, but for example, if the class isn't video-oriented, they may not have Firewire, which is the standard for all tape-based camcoder transfers to computer.

Without offering a price limit, this is a hard question to in return offer specifics. You can pay serious green for a very good quality camcorder... you can pay under $100 for a "Flip" style web-camcoder. There are dozens of cheap camcorders like this: cheap non-zoom lens, horrible low-light capability, weird recording formats. I can recommend the Flip only because the software is good.. the video is still poor, but they're easy to use. Aipitek, DXP, and many other Chinese flash-card camcorders have similar quality, but no decent software support.

The best deal I've seen lately for a high-def camcoder was a Hitachi Blu-Ray based model (far from the best HD camcorder, but not too bad in bright sunlight) for $299.. but that's over. Usually, you're going to pay $500+ for a high-def camcorder.

Regular consumer camcorders, more likely to be in the $200-$400 range... there are dozens of options, and I don't know what you're looking for well enough to suggest anything. Look at http://www.camcorderinfo.com for reviews and suggestions.

You can get really good standard-def video these days in most modern still photo cameras. Any 640x480 mode is likely to rival the 720x480 mode you get in all standard-def camcorders. My daughter is in a "Communications Academy" in High School, they do video projects all the time. While I've offered a few video camera to her for these things, most of the video she shoots in on her Pentax pocket digital camera (last Christmas' present). I paid about $100 for that camera.

And if this is just for two projects.. borrow something. Even if you think you're going on in video work, rushing to buy something for just one project is usually a formula for disappointment.

is there a canon camera that records uncompressed media instead of AVCHD?

M

Is there a canon camera that records uncompressed media instead of AVCHD? I hear AVCHD degrades the quality a lot and want a camera that can bypass from the inside. Any help would be great.

Answer
Uncompressed? No. Less compression? Yes. That would be any camcorder that uses MiniDV tape and records DV or HDV format video... Like the Canon HV40, XHA1, XLH series... At Sony, the HDR-FX7, HDR-FX1000, HVR series... if you stay in high definition. There are several standard def camcorders, too - Canon GL2, XL2, Sony DVCAM series... Canon ZR960, Sony DCR-HC62, Panasonic PV-GS320...

I do not know what you mean by "want a camera that can bypass from the inside".

MiniDV tape based camcorders mean your computer must have a firewire port. You will connect the camcorder's DV port (not USB) to the computer's firewire port (not USB) with a firewire cable (not USB). USB-to-firewire/DV cable/converter/adapter things do not work.

I really don't think you are able to do this with most modern digital cameras. The USB connection is used to transfer pics and video between PC and camera, not to stream live video. You can get a descent web cam for around $30 though!

How can I improve the sound quality for videos recorded on my digital camera?

EmiEatWorl

Is there something I can buy (such as a microphone) that will give the videos I record on my digital camera a better sound? I recently went to a concert with my new digital camera in tow and when I got home, the videos I had recorded were terrible! You couldn't even hear the singer. I realize concerts will have much more bass than everyday situations, but still, I'd like to have nice videos of concerts. Anyway, thanks for your help!

Answer
If you think you can sneak a boom mike into a concert, I'd use that, that'll give you the best quality. But you can just use microphones for a some what better quality.

What makes a flip video recorder better than a digital camera that records in HD?

Joeyyowee

I decided on getting one of the Panasonic digital cameras that record in HD instead of getting the flip. I don't understand why the flip is more expensive than the panasonic f3 for example. The video quality is the same and the flip doesn't take high quality pictures the way the panasonic does.
@fhotoace That's what I thought. I'm glad I did research and found a digital camera that records in HD instead of wasting money on the flip.

Answer
What makes a flip video recorder better than a digital camera that records in HD?
- Nothing. It's way much more inferior than most HD capable digital still cameras. It's a marketing strategy. There's no law preventing you from raising the value of your product as you see fit.

I really want to buy a camera that's really good for taking pictures at concerts, (probably outside) and recording. I have some FujiFilm 14 mega pixels camera now, but I mean I want a REALLY nice camera. I was looking into Nikon and Canon cameras but I don't know which one would be good for video recording too. I'm not really too concerned about the price, but under 4,000 would be cool!

Answer
First of all, you may not be allowed to bring a camera into the venue, I'd check first.
You might get away with smuggling it in, but personally I hate the possibility that I might either have my camera confiscated, or I won't be allowed inside.
Next problem is that concerts are a low light situation, usually also coupled with much movement as well as a fair distance from the subject.

All up, that makes it EXTREMELY challenging. The only hope of half decent concert photos are good DSLR cameras and even for those you need very good and very FAST lenses.

Small P&S cameras have tiny little sensors, so they don't do well with low light situations.
Concert photos are often blurry because there isn't enough light, so the shutter speed is too slow to hand-hold it, even worse when you add the movement of the performers to it.

You could try raising your ISO, but that will add noise to your photos.
You could try using your little flash, but it can't reach very far, and won't do you a whole lot of good other than lighting up the back of the heads directly in front of you.

I'm afraid there are a number of good reasons why the pro's carry around huge, expensive cameras, lenses, and lights.
It would be lovely if a tiny camera could do it all, but the reality is that small P&S's just can't handle concert situations very well. Some places do allow small P&S cameras (but no DSLRs). The reason for that is because they KNOW you will never get any decent shot with a little P&S.

However, I do realize that some of us a lot easier to please than others, so perhaps what is totally unacceptable to me might be fine in YOUR eyes.
If you can't have a good camera with you, at the very least make sure you learn how to you use what you have, so you can make the most out of it. Read your manual several times, attend a class, read some books on photography - it will help a lot.
If you're not interested in learning much, at the very least learn how to turn off the flash. Those tiny on-camera flashes only reach a few feet, so all you do with it is illuminate the bodies in front of you.

As to sound - there is a good reason why the audio pros carry around a lot of very big and very expensive gear. Even a good camcorder can only do so much in that regard - let alone a little P&S still camera! Don't expect miracles - don't even expect anything you'd ever want to listen to again.

What kind of point and shoot camera has a fast shutter response?

Rayne Wolf

Just what the question says. I'm a person that loves to take pictures, but I don't do it because I can't find a camera that has a fast shutter response. Just to be clear, I'm talking about the time between pressing the button to take the picture and when the picture actually takes. I see the perfect opportunity for photos all the time, but then by the time the picture is actually taken, whatever I'm taking a photo of has moved.

I don't want an SLR because I'm not a photographer and it'd really be just a waist of money. I'm looking for digital point and shoot cameras. I'd also like to have the possibility of HD video recording on the camera but my heart isn't set on it.

Answer
Shutter lag is caused by the camera's Auto Focus (AF) system and if it's too sluggish, taking photos can be quite frustrating. On cameras that do have problems with shutter lag...the trick to minimize lag is to allow the camera to lock in the focus by half pressing the shutter button, then when focus has been achieved...hold it there till the moment is right, then press the button down fully to take the shot. This allows less missed opportunities, but is still somewhat annoying having to do it all the time.

Luckily, these days you can get compact/point and shoot cameras that have minimal shutter lag, so are very quick to take a picture. This is due to improved processors and much improved AF systems.

In the link below you will see a list of some reviewed camera models. There are many more models that aren't in the list...you would have to see older reviews on the same site. As you can see, the camera up the top of the list takes around 0.15 secs to take one photo. The slowest camera in the list takes around 1.6 secs to take a picture. Times for taking 5 photos and using the flash are also included...
http://www.cameras.co.uk/html/shutter-lag-comparisons.cfm?sort=ShutterLag

Be aware that the fastest compact cameras don't necessarily take the best quality photos...so it's best to read individual reviews before making a decision.

Here are other review pages that include image samples and performance times...

Q. I'm looking for a digital camera with HD video recording capability.
I want it to have a descent optical zoom, a minimum of 12 mega pixels and good recording capabilities at night time (and photo).
What kind of camera/make should I look for? Any suggestions?

Answer
Megapixels means nothing these days.. do you print out on A2? No? Good then you don't need more then 8 Megapixels

Right that said a good lens does matters. Good glass is so nice to have! And of course looking for image quality always important sometimes it is better to invest in a more limited model with better image quality because.. well you want the best right?

Night time recording? What is your budget? The point is that the laws of nature don't change to make a picture or a video you need LIGHT! Raising ISO' s will only get you so far..

I guess a DSLR could, it has a nice big sensor so low noise and coupled with the right lens [in your case a wide aperture prime] it would give relative noise free images and video at night. Do buy one with an external sound jack though because the in build microphones are usually pretty good at catching wind noise.

So most basic DSLR with HD video + Prime Lens + Tripod [really you are going to need it] and the basic set of memory cards and batteries. Oh and of course an external Microphone.. mmm $1100?

You know a HD video camera is cheaper.. but won't make as nice still shots ;)

What's the best budget/business user digital camera for video blogging?

Answer
The Canon 300 HS is a fine choice. If you like it, then stick with it. I'd also suggest going to a nearby camera/electronic store to try out some for yourself though.

My hedgehog is having babies. I heard how elusive a video of an actual hedgehog giving birth is so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a low price (Under $200) video camera that can be left up all day recording. It also has to be small and easily attachable to the cage. Although those are all preferences so you can just give me the links to all suitable cameras.

Answer
I would be very careful with introducing a foreign object, especially into the the cage of a new mom. Hedgehogs are renowned for their cannibalistic behaviour often practiced when they feel threatened or unsafe with a new litter, and if a scary object with new smells and blinking lights were to be set up in what they presumed was a safe place, they babies may not have a good chance of survival.

My suggestion is to take pictures of the babies after they are two weeks old and you begin handling them, otherwise you may end up with a video of your hedgie eating her young.

Good luck!

What is wrong with my 8 mm video camera tape?

Tracey T

I have an 8mm tape that I recorded my son on when he was a baby 4 years ago. I have recently watched it on my video camera and all was fine. That was about 9 months ago. When I try to watch it now, nothing comes on. All my other tapes work fine. What happened and can I get my video of may baby back some how?

I Need tips for recording videos using standard digital photography camera. I have camera stand and i want record videos of origami. I need tips for lighting and what best way to make it good video. I have 9.0 mega pixel camera it can record video w/o zoom
software like what ? ?
the camer is
Fujifilm Finepix A700

Answer
If you tell us what camera and model we will be able to give you some more specific points that will help you with the specific camera.

In general, lighting will be the most important. You can use construction lamps to supply good light strong lighting for your scene until you an later afford proper video lighting.

It may be that even though the sensor in your camera is 9MP, the video feature uses only a portion of the sensor to give you a video resolution of something close to 1280 x 720 at 30 fps (about 1MP). In your research, you will find that some of the better video recorders use three sensors that are 3.1MP each (Red, Green and Blue) so can produce much higher resolution videos.

Im try to figure out which digital camera is the best for photography?

I really want to purchase a digital camera that is the best bang for its buck. I really don't know a lot about them but I want one that takes good photographs and is easy to work with little of no editing. Any help is appreciated thanks.

Answer
I'd highly recommend the Panasonic ZS3 camera. It's kind of expensive, but it has a lot of bang for that price.

- 12x Optical Zooming! with an optical image stabilizer, which is better than a digital one. Most cameras are only 3x zooming.
- 10.1 Megapixels
- 720p HD video recording (1280x720 resolution) with stereo sound, it records in AVCHD, the same as Blu-Ray! I like how there's a dedicated video button so you can quickly record video without taking time turning the dial to the correct place. You can also record for as long as you want, as long as there's enough memory on the memory card. You can zoom while taking video too!
- 25mm Wide Angle lens. You don't have to stand a mile away to take a group picture.
- It has Face Detection which detects a face and adjusts focus, exposure, contrast, and skin complexion automatically.
- It's got a big 3", high resolution screen that's easy to see
- And even with all these features, it's small enough to fit in my jeans pocket!

It got pretty highly rated by people at Amazon.com too (where bought mine). I've provide the link in the source. You'll get free shipping their too.

Not the film camera with rolls i mean the digital video camera to record good movies, with the right sensor to low lights, good definition, acceptable sounds, not to big, 750 dollars below.
might be fine a nikon d7000 with 55mm? i know that a professional camera are to expensive, but i dont want to begin with the left foot.
you are right the correct term is camcorder but you understand my answer, which is a good camcorder to recorder in lowlight, independently of the subject.

Answer
I agree with fhotoace...

If video is important, then a camcorder is preferred. It is designed to capture video. And audio. capturing still images is a secondary "convenience feature".

If stills are important, than use a still image capture device. Like a dSLR. Capturing video (and audio is a secondary "convenience feature". For example, if you read the documentation the Nikon D7000, you will find they will overheat when capturing video "for prolonged periods" (about 15 minutes maximum) and stop video capture until it cools down (takes a long time)... or... check their built-in (mono) mic and no (or extremely limited) manual audio control. This means no stereo without an external mic and adding something like a XLR adapter (~$350 from juicedLink or BeachTek) to plug into the stereo audio input + use the audio gain controls... or... use an external audio recording device like a Zoom H2, H2n, H4n and take the extra steps to import and sync the audio when editing...

Basically you end up spending more money and time you would not spend if you use the right tool for the task.

I am not saying any dSLR can't capture good video - they can - but they cannot be treated like a camcorder. There are workarounds for lots of things that you normally don't need to worry about when using a camcorder...

And we have not discussed captured video file compatibility with your computer/video editor (MOV from the dSLR), tripod and other steadying devices, lighting requirements, power supplies., cables, mics (there is no single best mic)... and lots of other "accessories" needed for successful video capture.

The camera/camcorder is only one part of a much larger system.

I have a video camera with one long video on it. How do I seperate a part of this video from the rest?

I want to put a Halo 3 movie on Youtube. I've recorded the video on my video camera but I had to record it about 53 minutes into the tape because a family video took up the first 50 minutes of the tape. Do you have any suggestions on how I can take a section of the video and put it on Youtube? If I need software please tell me what software I need.

Answer
If you recorded 103 minutes of video on a camcorder tape, this is not a miniDV tape based camcorder - it sounds like it is a full sized VHS analog camcorder so there will not be any digital connections.

How would you normally connect the camcorder to a computer? If this has not been done, and my assumption in the first paragraph is correct, then you need to get an analog/digital bridge like
http://pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Dazzle/Family.htm
Connect the camcorder to the A/D bridge with the AV cables that came with the camcorder, then connect the A/D bridge to the computer... and follow the instructions that come with the A/D bridge.

Hello. My mom wants to upload a video of me playing guitar onto facebook. We have one of those video cameras where you record everything onto a DVD. I was wondering how we would go about turning it into a file, so that we would be about to upload it onto facebook. Several answers would be greatly appreciated. We are slightly (ok, a lot!) technologically impaired, lol. Thanks in advance!

Answer
You would need to use a DVD ripper program like DVD Decrypter. One of my boy-buddies uses VideoStudio by Corel. which has more features than just ripping. You put the mini-disc into the DVD tray of your computer making sure it sits centrally in the little depression made for it. You will have to 'finalize' the mini DVD so that your computer can read the disc - your camera manual will tell you how to do that.

Inside VideoStudio you select "Insert DVD/DVD-VR" and point the program at the DVD and follow the prompts and the video is copied from the disc into the time-line of VideoStudio so that you can edit it - add lots of different videos together cut out bits you don't want - add titles/music/narration - Then you can then output the project to a mpeg file and post it on FB.

What type of camera should I get?

I want to start recording guitar covers and I was thinking of getting an hd webcam to do it but I'm not sure if it will lag or give me poor results with capturing movement. I've also looked into video cameras too, but I don't want to spend a fortune for just shooting guitar videos. Any recommendations would help a lot, thanks!

Answer
What you need is a good audio recording system

Look here

These recorders are used in conjunction with dSLR's when used as a video camera.
