Can I record Videos on a digital camera? If yes, then which type of cameras?

Q.

Answer
Yes, most digital cameras take videos now. You have to be careful though because there are variations:

1) Sound - some will record sound with the video, some don't.
2) Length of video - some cameras limit the files to 20-30 sec files, some are unlimited, until you fill up your memory card.
3) Type of file - not as big of a deal.. some will record in .mpg, some in .avi, some in .mov.. in case you have a preference.

For #1, usually the sales people won't even know the answer so you'll have to play with it to find out.. look for a mic/speaker on the camera. For #2, try looking in the details for the camera online for this. For #3, if it matters to you, this will also be in the online descriptions.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have more questions..

A good digital camera with good video recording?

waterr!

My camera, which is a Sony DSC-P41(4.1 meg. pixels) is getting old and worn out. But its still a good camera for me, but i feel that my camera is getting outdated. I recently came back from vacation, and i wished that i took more videos. Is there a good digital camera that can also take good videos?

(There is one really stupid, tiny reason why im trying to stay away from sony cameras, it is that their cameras use a specific memory card, and the highest memory card ive seen in a store is around 2GB, when im trying to aim for a memory card 4GB, since im planning to take alot of pictures and videos)

Answer
well sony does make some good cameras and they make memory sticks just as big as sd these days and they are getting cheaper so i would personally go with sony. sorry for breaking your rules lol

Question about recording video games????

Tyler R

Everytime I try to record a video game, the bottom part of the screen is shaded and the top is normal. How do I fix this? Is there a software? Should I get a new video camera? No, I am not trying to record Halo.

Answer
Are you pointing a video camera at the TV? If you are, then it's pretty normal to get either weird shading or some sort of shady bar scrolling through the screen. It's just the peculiar way TVs output their signal and how video cameras record it. Have a read of this article, it has a few solutions:

digital camera?

Q. ok i want to buy a digital camera and umm i want it also 2 take vids do u guys know about how much it will cost (i am going 2 buy at stores like bestbuy or if they have them at target)

Answer
Even though I personally own this ultra compact camera, I would still like to highly recommend the purchase of a Nikon Coolpix L10 [which has no shutter lag] for the following reasons:

1. Besides taking well-exposed hi-quality 5 megapixel pictures, it uses a standard set of rechargeable double AA batteries which last a very long time - 300 shots per set of rechargeables;
2. Has a 3x optical zoom;
3. The flash setting for "red-eye" correction is on the navigator wheel and not within a submenu;
4. It's very small and light;
5. Uses inexpensive SD memory cards;
6. The digital video feature takes wonderful "sound" videos which are noise free. It records the piano very well with it's built-in microphone;
7. It comes with a USB 2.0 transfer cable which you connect to your USB computer port;
8. Has tripod mount on bottom of camera;
9. And the price is a mere $119 [sold at Samy's Camera - www.samys.com, and Staples.com; $99 at amazon.com]

Digital camera?

Ms.Hockey!

Hello out there!! Im looking for a decent digital camera but I don't need anything fancy. Just one that will take quality pictures, let me zoom and do simple edits but nothing to hi tech. I travel to Florida a lot and also go out a lot so I want a smaller sized one. I don't want to pay to much for it, im thinking no way over 200$ but anything in that range...100-150!

I kinda want one of the colored kodak ones, does anyone know how much they cost and how simple they are to use??

any suggestions are appreciated!

best digital camera with video recording and over 8mp for under $150.00?

this would be my 5th camera due to either breaking it or hating it.
i like taking pictures but i love making movies even more so i want something that's good with both.

-thanks

Answer
While most cameras take video, and some camcorders take photos; to get the best of both, you need both. Have not seen a camera that compares with the video from a camcorder and camcorders can't take good quality photos. Suggest the least expensive Canon Camcorder and the Canon A590IS camera.

What gives a camera its picture quality?
It is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures. Mega pixel resolution is about potential photo size, not picture quality.

In new cameras, look for a viewfinder (LCD invisible in bright sun), optical image stabilizer, and check battery prices. High mega pixel settings take longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches. Click links below for more details.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm ...

The Canon A590IS is a slightly older model that is available everywhere at great sale prices. Think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has auto focus, a viewfinder, optical image stabilization, and uses rechargeable NiMH batteries.
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/A590IS/A590ISA.HTM ...
http://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...

For expanded wide angle or telephoto capabilities, the A590 IS is compatible with Canon's accessory lens adapters: A small button next to the lens bezel is actually a latch; press it and you can remove the bezel ring, exposing a bayonet mount for accessory lenses. Canon offers the WC-DC52 0.7x wide-angle lens, the TC-DC52A telephoto lens, the 250D 52mm closeup lens separately, along with the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them on the camera. (Note that the wide, tele, and macro lenses all need the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them to the camera. The lenses won't work by themselves.)

There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something above that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the second link in the information above for an example then search for your camera of choice at the upper left. Camera prices at this link change often.

There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best. The second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

CAUTION Do not overcharge! Batteries can be damaged. Use an automatic two or more hour Energizer Compact smart charger with temperature monitor, trickle charge technology, and safety timer ($9.76) at Walmart. Use pre-charged 2000mAh Duracell ($12.97) or RayOVac ($5.97) batteries (both hold charge one year) and a full cycle charge. To preserve battery charge, use the viewfinder.

CAUTION To prevent memory card corruption, keep batteries charged and don't delete. Wait for lights to stop flashing then turn camera off before removing memory. For card readers, double click Safely Remove Hardware. Select, then click Stop and OK.

Lots of great camera tips in this link.

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7 x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Once you select a camera, read all about it in the owner's manual. You can view owners manuals at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

GE W1000 camera records audio but not video?

xXAlbinoCr

So, here's the issue;

the only 'working' camera in my house is my GE W1000, and I need to record video I can download to my computer for an upcoming event.

However, here's the issue;
whenever I attempt to download a video I've recorded, once it saves on my computer, the file os audio-only, despite being marked as a .MOV file.

I have no idea how to fix this, and I would really like to have this answered as soon as possible. Thank-you!!

Answer
My research shows that the GE W1000 does shoot video.

Quick Time Motion JPEG, Audio: G.711 [Monaural]
Movie Recording - 640x480pixels: 20fps/15fps, 320x240pixels: 20fps/15fps
Max. Recording Resolution - 640 x 480

As you can see, NONE of the video recording resolutions are standard (30 fps for NTSC video) and there is NO HD video option

Your statement "... upcoming event .." makes me think that your shooting video of the event is important. Frankly you do not have the correct tools to do that

If you plan to shoot video of events in the future, think about buying an actual video camera or at least a P&S camera made by a reputable camera company, like Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, Sony, Olympus, etc. GE is NOT known as a camera maker, but rather for making excellent kitchen appliances and jet engines

Why does the audio keep breaking when I record a video on my camera?

Fateha

I have just bought a Casio Exilim EX-H5. When I take a video on the camera, the sound keeps disappearing every couple of seconds.

I thought that this was probably happening because I was filming an HD movie on a normal SD memory card, however, this also happens when I record a standard movie.

Do you know why this is happening? Or is it neccessary for me to use an SDHC memory card even for recording movies which are not high definition?

Answer
Hi Fateha:

Unfortunately, most still cameras shooting video are a compromise to start with. Examining the Casio official page for the EX-H5, it even lists "SDHC" as the spec for this model, so the bigger & faster the card, the better. Also, regular SD cards are typically formatted in FAT-16, whereas SDHC cards typically use FAT-32 due to the larger memory size. Make sure you have used that CAMERA and not a PC or another device to format the card with. (Try saving all your old pictures/videos onto a computer, then erase & re-format in your Casio.)

Test your camera with the video set to "LP: 320 x 240". This only records at 15 frames-per-second. The HD (720p @ 24fps) and "Standard" (480i @ 30fps) both require a higher # of pictures-per-second, not just higher resolution. If your sound records normally at the LP setting, then you know it's your SD Card.

Also, it's not only just SDHC (High Capacity) that is the issue, it is also speed rating of the card (a/k/a Class #). Some cheap SD Class 4 and Class 6 cards can't even handle video well. If you can afford Class 10, try that with your HD setting. If you still have problems, return your camera.

See the excellent section on SD card Class/Speed ratings at Wikipedia's SD Card article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SD_card#Speed_Class_Rating

Stick with the major SDHC brands such as SanDisk, Panasonic, Lexar, and Toshiba (all of which Nikon tests & approves for their high-end cameras). Beware of cheap internet "counterfeit" SD Cards that are intentionally mis-labeled as high-speed, but are not.

hope this helps,

Recording piano videos for YouTube?

K-LLynnnnn

Video camera suggestions if I plan to record videos of me playing piano?

I'm considering getting a flip - how's the sound quality?

Answer
Camcorder Mic's are not the greatest for recreating good quality audio, they pick up everything not what you want. you are better off to buy a camcorder that his an mic input, and use a quality mic, that, if by chance you are using a electronic keyboard, then take the output of that and record it directly to your computer, at the start play a single note, this will give you a peak that you can use to sync the video to the audio. drop the video into your timeline (editing software) and the recorded audio mute the audio from the camera. now you have good quality audio, providing you have the levels set correctly.

I dont think that a flip camera is going to be up to the audio part, the video should be fine as long as there is enough lighting.

If you are on a limited budget then obviously you will have to make do, limiting the amount of audio the camera's mic picks up will help you a lot. covering the mic with foam may help is there are no audio controls on the camera.

Good luck

High Quality Video Camera to record music videos ?

falcon9789

im looking for a good video Camera to record all my studio playing with my band , and the Camera can pass the video files to a usb port to the computer, i need help cause im looking for one that can the job right

Answer
The best quality video to be had in the consumer level camcorder market is a MiniDV tape camcorder. To get a HD camcorder that could have the same or better quality, would cost in excess of $3300 for that HD camcorder. MiniDV tape camcorders hook by Firewire to a IEEE1394 port in your computer. If your computer, be it laptop or tower, does not currently have firewire, they sell cards that fit in the expansion port of both Laptop and tower computers that start in price at about $28 and never top $89

Other than that HD camcorder have other issues that would make me run as fast as i could in the other direction if I was offered one. Also, a camcorder with a MIC jack will be a big help to you.

Getting a HD camcorder is taking a step backward in Video Quality. HD camcorders Interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly, the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. HD camcorders interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi processor computer with the big Graphics and sound cards that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files a HD camcorder produces.

What is a good video camera for recording loud music without distorting the noise?

Dillon

I'm in a rock band, and we would like to record us playing, so we can put it on youtube. We are looking for a VIDEO camera that can shoot good videos, but we want better sound quality. Budget is $200 or less. This, or a camera that has a "USB IN" thing so that i can plug a rockband mic into it

Answer
To get the very best sound quality for a music video, you should ALWAYS record the video and the music separately. Then merge and synchronize the music using a good audio/video editor and sequencer like Pro Tools.

But, if you insist on recording them together, you need to have a digital video camcorder that has an external microphone input so that you can plug in your own studio quality microphone. Better still is to have more than one microphone running through a mic preamp that feeds into the camcorder. The music should also be balanced correctly by running the entire band through a mixer and then recording the audio off of the mixer in stereo to the camcorder.

If your music is too loud, it's going to sound bad anyway. You can turn down the music and it not only sounds better, the people listening to won't have to shout at each other to comment on it and the musicians won't go deaf at an early age from damaging their ears with a constant barrage of excessive decibels. http://www.abelard.org/hear/hear.php#loud-music

"New EXR Auto with a Motion Detection capability to virtually reduce subject blur in all lighting conditions. The built-in GPS functionality adds a Landmark Navigator feature to help photographers pin-point locations and the 15x wide-angle optical zoom lens now doubles its telephoto power (to 30x) thanks to the new intelligent digital zoom mode."

It also adds a new textured finish on the black model and features a 16 megapixel EXR CMOS sensor, 15x optical zoom lens, 3 inch screen, GPS and RAW support. (As this camera is so similar to the predecessor, this review is based on the F550 EXR Review).

Fujifilm FinePix F600EXR Features
The Fujifilm FinePix F600EXR sits at the top of the range in Fujifilm's line-up of pocket-zoom / travel-zoom cameras and features a wide angle 15x optical zoom lens, equivalent to 24-360mm.

Another feature of the F600 is a 16 megapixel CMOS sensor for high speed shooting and Fuji's unique EXR pixel arrangement to give three modes of operation: HR: High Resolution (uses all pixels to make a 16 megapixel images), SN: High Sensitivity for high ISO, low noise at 8 megapixels and DR: for dynamic range improvements (upto 1600% now available), at 8 megapixels.

The F600 and F550 goes beyond what the F500 offers, by including manual controls and RAW support and GPS support. If you don't need or want these features you can save some money by going for the Fujifilm FinePix F500 EXR instead. Both cameras are capable of recording Full HD video with optical zoom and stereo sound.

GPS options are further enhanced on the F600EXR with the following GPS options: GPS On (permanently), On (when camera switched on), Off. Location info ON/OFF. Auto time correction (On without summertime, with summertime, or off), GPS Tracking data on/off (creates a text document on the memory card with GPS information). GPS KM/Mile setting.

In playback you can access landmark navigator, this gives you a compass when the camera is pointed down or a view of GPS landmarks such as public facilities, tourist spots, leisure spots and my landmark. GPS Photo Navigation is another option. You can copy the location info, or search images by date, GPS location name, face, favourites, scene, type of data, or by upload mark (Youtube or Facebook).

Key Features
16.0 megapixel back-lit EXR CMOS sensor
15x optical zoom lens, f/3.5-5.3, 24-360mm in 35mm equivalent
3inch screen, 460k pixels
Full HD video, 30fps, with stereo sound
High speed video 320/160/80fps
Scenes / Pro shooting mode / Pro Focus / Pro Low Light
120/180/360 degrees motion panorama
Image stabilisation: Image-sensor shift type
ISO100 - ISO3200, ISO6400 at 8mp, ISO12800 at 4mp
5cm Macro mode
Pop-up flash (electronic button)
RAW+JPEG mode, Manual controls
New GPS Features

Fujifilm FinePix F600EXR Handling
Despite being quite a compact camera, it features a rubber front grip, along with a textured / rubberised body. There is also another rubber grip on the back of the camera, although they are simply rubber spots where your thumb rests. This design gives good grip generally, although a tripod may still be necessary when using the full optical zoom.

On the back is an easy to use slanted mode dial and a number of buttons on the back provide quick access to the main modes, including playback and video modes. The video button is quite large, however it felt a little spongy which meant I occasionally wondered whether the camera had started recording.

Fujifilm FinePix F600 EXR - virtually the same to look at, except the F600 has a pop-up button for the flash. This also means you can close the flash more easily than the previous model. The camera features a stylish metal body, with a metal tripod mount.

The F600 is really quite compact for a camera with such a large zoom and it's just the lens that protrudes out of the camera when off, meaning it will easily fit into the more compact camera cases such as the Tamrac Neo 14 (possibly one of the smallest cases available for this camera) with a very snug fit.

Menus: The Fujifilm FinePix F600 menus are quite straightforward, with the main controls split into photo menus and setup menus. Another set of options can be changed by using the F button on the back of the camera, this gives quick access to: ISO, Image size, Continuous shooting, GPS settings, Advanced anti blur and film simulation. Although the availability of the options are dependant on the mode you are currently in. More advanced GPS options, IS mode selection, Red-eye removal and RAW options are available in the setup menu, including the option to save the original image - this works when using red-eye removal, pro focus, pro low-light and motion panorama modes.

Undertaker

Now i've been googling the same thing but everyone says to use a capture card. The thing is, i want to record gameplay AND commentary that is live. Darksydephil whom does this uses a camera that costs $350 and i can not afford to spend even near that.
If possible i would like a camera that can charge (use power from an outlet) and record at the same time so i don't have to re-charge the battery.
Yes, i understand that i would need to point a camera straight towards my tv on a tri-pod that is what i plan on doing, I just need to find a cheap camera that can do the job with semi decent quality videos and semi decent mic.

Answer
Cameras don't record video from a television or game screen, for that you'd need a link to a video recorder like the cable companies use.

With a camera you'd need a tripod and have to point the camera at the screen and roll video... that's the only way a camera will do it.

What digital cameras record videos in AVI?

figureskat

I was thinking about Kodak or Panasonic (or any others you know of) but they have to record videos in AVI so I can use them on windows movie maker. I know they can be converted but its bad quality...

Thanks!

Answer
Most cameras record in AVI, Canon does for sure. I thought that they all did. If you're looking for a camera that does, the Canon cameras definitely do though, that's not a worry. A good camera for all sorts of photography is the Canon SD1100

whats a decent enough digtal video camera?

Timm

all i want is to be able to take photos of my baby for memories and to be able to video it aswell with good memory card or whatever i needd to tape it onto a dvd or video for when she gets older to see it,
what would be good memory ex:megabytes or gigabites or whatever they're called i don't have a clue what decent memory is.
what is a good make camera?

Answer
Any video camera will do the job of recording your home videos.

Your computer probably has a free video editing program. Windows Movie Maker comes in MS Windows, and you can download it for free from Microsoft if it is not already on your computer. Macs come with iLife which includes iMovie and iDVD. There are also other full version video editing programs available in free non-demo downloads for Windows, OSX, and Linux. Most have basic abilities, but some have very advanced capabilities. If you need a program that is a bit more advanced, you can purchase Sony Vegas Pro, Avid's Pinnacle Studio, or Final Cut Express for less than $100.

Unless you need a digital still photo camera for specific photography needs, the best option is to just get the best video camera you can afford. Older camcorders do not take very good photos, but several of the newer HD camcorders take very good 6 megapixel photos and sometimes better. Be careful with this since there are also many digital still photo cameras advertised as 6, 8, and even 10 megapixel video cameras. These cameras take very good photos 6-10mp photos, but they take very low resolution video - lower than SD and VGA quality in most cases.

If you need photos from your video camera, it is best in most cases to just take video. Most editing programs allow you to export video frames as very good high quality photos - much better than what most video cameras and some digital still photo can take in the photo mode. This works best with HD video recordings.

The real question for your situation is what format will be best to record in. Well, since your computer is specifically set up for DV tape, and DV tape is designed for long term storage, a camcorder that records to HDV (or miniDV) tape is recommended. This is the most economical recording media, and it is the only consumer-level recording media that has long term storage ability.

Be sure to NOT purchase the basic consumer grade tape from Wal-Mart and similar stores. Go online to Amazon and get the Professional AY-DVM63PQ Professional quality tape. These tapes are built with 2-3 times the quality of the standard tape, and you can get them on Amazon in packs of 10 for half the price of consumer grade tape at Wal-Mart and other stores. You can also choose to get the HDV marked tape which is even better, but you will definitely pay for them.

If you choose different recording medium, or if you want to start editing your dv tape video, you will also need a good hard drive with at least 500gb of storage. Many external 500gb drives are as low as $100, and if you have a desktop, you can add a second internal hard drive to your system for even less. If you do add a second hard drive to your system (especially your desktop), it is recommended that you use the drive only for your video needs. If you need to store other material on the drive, then it is best that you partition a section of the drive for video only.

Either way, it is very easy to record video to tape, store it, capture it to the computer via Firewire, edit it, and burn it to DVD or save it to another format for uploading to a website or adding to email.

What's a good video camera for recording singing/dance videos?

2PacandBon

What's a good video camera for recording HD singing/dance videos? I sing and dance, but I feel that my iPhone wouldn't really be good enough to do the job. What's a good video camera under $400? Also, what's a good video/movie editing program?

Answer
Hey, I'm a dancer too! You could buy any Canon camera, I currently have Canon T4i BUT that is in the 8-900 range.

You can get a:
-EOC Rebel T3 for under 400.
-Photoshot SX50 HS
-Sony Alpha ILCE-3000

If that doesn't work for you, check more online :)

Can you record video on Kinect, as if it were a normal Video Camera?

Q. I was wondering if you can record video on Kinect, of you like dancing, or running around or something, and maybe it saves on the xBox, that you can play back?

Like as if it were a normal camera. Is there a way..?
I don't need it for YouTube or anything, just for playback to watch later.

Answer
Certain games have a record functionality, and there is video chat, but nothing so far to just record your self.

RameshF

THIS IS WITH FB 2011 i have a macbook and it says turn on camera or make sure it is not in use witha another application? please help

Answer
Log into your Facebook account. Click on the PROFILE tab at the top of the page.

2
If you want to record a video to add, click the VIDEO icon at the top of the page (under WALL, INFO, PHOTOS, etc.) and then click RECORD. If you have a webcam, you can record a video and it will go directly to your Facebook page.

3
If you want to add a video you have recorded and saved to your computer, click the VIDEO icon at the top of the page and click UPLOAD. You will browse your hard drive and choose the video to upload. (Note: The upload process can take a while. Just be patient and don't click away or you will have to start over.)

4
You can also add a video to your profile that you see on someone else's Facebook page. Just click on the video, and underneath you will see COMMENT and SHARE. Click SHARE. You can either post the video to your profile or send it to friends in your address book.

5
You can also add videos directly from YouTube. Just go to the YouTube site and find the video you want to add to your profile. Under the video, you will see icons for sharing options such as Digg, StumbleUpon, and Facebook. Click the Facebook icon and you will have the option to post the video to your profile, or to send to friends in your Facebook address book.

6
The sharing option above also applies to most other sites that host videos such as Google Videos, Yahoo Videos, AOL Videos, Meta Café, Flickr, etc. If you find a video on the internet, chances are that you can upload it to Facebook through a sharing function.

What is really amazing video camera to record a concert?

Kelcey

Im going to a One Direction concert this summer and i really want to capture as much as i can in the best quality possible. Im sitting fairly away from the stage and i want a camera that can zoom far in without pixelating or blurring the picture. Also i dont want the sound to sound really booming and too loud to understand. I want the sound/ image to be clear basically. My budget is around 200-300 dollars but maybe more depending on what it is or whatever. Please help!!!!

Answer
You may find it difficult getting a video camera into a concert. I do not believe they would be legally allowed to be taken in to a concert like this. You definitely want to avoid being seen with it if you do get one in. What I would suggest you do is get a super zoom point and shoot camera that does video. This will make it look more like you are taking pictures which is allowed I am sure. The zoom feature will also get your closer to the action for better more intimate close-ups. The problem is that a lot of these cameras exceed your budget but there are some I have linked below that would do the job for you. They are not as great in low light so hopefully the stage is properly illuminated. The Panasonic FZ200 would be my first choice but of course it costs $400. It will do low light footage zoomed in better then the other camera in the list though. Stay away from cameras with more then 12 mega pixels as anything greater then this and your low light performance is going to suffer even more. It is simply not useful in a small sensor camera to pack it with mega pixels, it is a marketing ploy more then anything else.

BEST PROFESSIONAL HD VIDEO CAMERA FOR RECORDING INDOOR CONCERTS/PERFORMANCES (UNDER $1300)?

Maranata

Hello everyone!

I am completely inexperienced about video cameras. Could someone recommend the best professional HD video camera for recording INDOOR (guitar/string quartet/piano/some percussion) concerts and dance/drama performances, which usually have low light. I would prefer a shoulder-mount model. My budget is only $1300.

Thanks in advance!

Answer
My definition of a "professional" HD video camera:
Lens diameter of 70mm or larger;
3CCD or 3CMOS imaging chip array.
Low compression video capture and storage.
When you find this, you get:
Separate zoom and focus rings on the lens barrel;
Manual audio gain control on the outside of the camcorder;
Neutral density filter setting on the outside of the camcorder...
At the low end are "prosumer" units like the Sony HDR-FX1000.

Low end camcorders have small lens and small imaging chip - this makes it impossible to capture good video under poor lighting conditions. Manual controls are buried in the menu and difficult to use/reach (your iPad has no manual controls). As the lens diameter gets larger and the imaging chip size increases, the low-light and poor light video capture behavior gets better and so does the price. As the manual controls migrate to the outside of the camcorder, more price increases - and add a mic jack an manual audio control...

dSLRs and other still image capture devices that happen to capture video as a secondary "convenience feature" should not be used as camcorders. This does not mean they cannot capture good video - they can, but they can't be treated as a camcorder. dSLRs have known issues related to overheating when capturing video over a prolonged time; poor audio options, file size and video length limitations. Generally, dSLRs do not have "stabilization" for video (even when the lens has stabilization).

Best video is captured under perfect lighting and best audio levels using low compression. That is not reality. That means we need to use equipment that works under as many adverse circumstances as possible.

Use of some sort of stabilizer (other than the camcorder's optical stabilizer) is strongly recommended. Humans are not built to be steady. Use of the ground, a rock, chair, shelf, monopod, shoulder-mount - anything but handheld... If you are capturing video handheld - with a camcorder, dSLR or other video capture device, expect poor quality.

Audio: The built-in mic works well with any camcorder when the audio is at an appropriate level and located in the right place. When this happens, the video framing may not be good. When the video framing is good, then the audio may not be set up correctly. The resolution to this is to use an external mic or audio recorder. This way the audio and the video are not physically depending on each other. Even if you don't choose to use an external mic or audio recorder, it is much better to have the mic jack and manual audio control (in a camcorder) when you want it - rather than want it and not have it.

I would suggest you look into the Canon Legria HF S series. Decent lens diameter and imaging chip size for the price, external mic jack and manual audio gain control. Please do not compare their video quality to a $4,000 camcorder - especially under poor/indoor lighting conditions. The lesn diameter is only 58mm and single imaging chip is 1/3".

Tips:
Use a tripod or other steadying device.
On a camcorder, use the white balance.
Use an external stereo mic (Audio Technica has a decent, affordable ones) or audio recorder (like a Zoom H2) when recording music - the stereo separation is much better than mono audio.
Use the manual audio gain control.
Capture video under good lighting.
Use the White balance settings.
Capture video at highest quality.

The shoulder mount cams in your price range have small 37mm lens diameter. The Canon HF S series on a shoulder mount system will be much better. And when you go with the HF S series cam, that leaves you budget for the other stuff.

And we don't know if your computer needs to be upgraded to deal with the AVCHD compressed video.

Whats the best video camera for recording live music?

Jamie

Whats the best video camera, for under $500, that i can record good live music and have a pretty good image quality?

Answer
You need a camera with good mics and adjustable sound levels for the loud concert:

http://www.amazon.com/Zoom-Q3-null-Optical-Screen/dp/B002J95GVI/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1297458274&sr=1-1

Need a good quality, cheap digital video camera for recording live band performances & uploading to youtube???

Lisa Faye

I know several people who do live music performances at local venues... and one band in particular is interested in having me take video of them and upload it to YouTube. I took video of them a few months ago and just uploaded it... the quality is decent as it was taken on my regular digital camera.. but I'm looking for a camera that's primary function is to take video, not still photographs. Looking for something under ~$150... thank you!
I had been considering the Flip, however I am concerned about (a) the sound quality, especially since I'm going to be recording live musical performances and (b) I don't like how I'm limited to only 60 minutes of recording time on the internal memory card.

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

DSLR Cameras, all Makes, all Models, all have the same problem when video taping some long videos, all overheat at the 13 to 18 minute mark, depending on the Make and Model. This is unavoidable, it all has to with the fact, video is an afterthought in DSLR camera production.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

Does the Mega pixel of a camera matters on the Video Recording?

The_One

does it matter if it's a 2.0 Mp camera or 5.0 Mp camera for recording?

what should I also consider on video recording?

I'm not trying to get those high class Camcorder...just planning on mobile phones (Iphon, LG viewty, LG shine, Samsung ect)

Answer
No, the mega-pixel value of the lens is not necessarily directly relevant to the performance of a camera that is recording video.

When looking for video recording, make sure the device is capable of recording at a rate of 30 frames per second (FPS). This is considered the standard national frame rate for the United States. Other countries use PAL, which is based on 24 FPS.

If you plan on recording video for use like in web pages, then the 320x240 resolution might be suitable for you.

If you want to have a better video recording, like something you might want to burn to DVD, then you need to have a camera that can sustain 30 FPS at a 640x480 minimum resolution.

The chips that are used to 'catch' photos that are installed in most all camera phones are of low quality. They are just not in the same category at all. Camera phones will also produce poor quality audio as well. Consider them good for catching emergency shots, for example like an automotive accident for evidence in a court of law.

While I would not go for a mobile phone for digital still photos or for video, I would go for a digital still photo camera that performs these functions.

For example, my 7.2 megapixel Sony camera takes great photos. It takes darn good video with audio as well. The video clip lengths are only limited by the amound of flash memory you have in your device. I really love this camera. Not to mention, as of December 15th 2007, it is currently going for something like $129.99 USD. It even comes with a carrying case, Sony rechargeable batteries, disposable batteries, hand strap, internal memory, and an intuitive user interface to boot. Check it out here: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=20005005 or browse to http://www.sony.com/ and search for Cyber-shot® DSC-S700.

Hope this helps.

I'm looking for a video camera but I don't know what they're called, help?

I'm looking for a good quality camera possibly a Nikon cause those are typically better than Sony. I want a portable camera for vlogging & sometimes it's really dark out so i need a camera that carries with it a built-in portable low & high light (but not blinding) so that when I do vlog in the dark or at night people can see whats going on in the picture.

Is there anything like that? I don't know what these kinds of cameras are called, it'd be great to have one.

DSLR camcorders, every make, every model, all have one problem with videos. Non of them can take a video longer than 20 minutes. Most of them, under that time, overheat, and stop doing anything. They then need to cool down, that takes hours, sometimes overnight. No good for weddings or Parades or anything over 15 minutes for that matter. Stick to taking pictures only with a DSLR camera

Time lapse videos are easy to make â you keep your camera mounted on a place (a street corner or at your office) and start recording. After certain duration, stop recording and bring to the editing room. In your favorite video editing software, fast-forward the video to at least 100 times fast. Then add a background score, that's it.

2. Interviewing someone
Prepare 10 questions to interview someone (if the person is a girl, you will get lot of views), and do a timed 1-minute interview. You can make the questions such that the respondent can answer with just a âYesâ or âNoâ. Or ask a question to many people, say, âWho would you like to see as the next president of USA?â â ask people answer this question with videos (video replies).

3. Provide your own tips
Start recording your camera and go in front and give some tips to the world. Yes, you can provide funny tips on a specific area of your expertise. Choose a wild topic such as, â10 ways to save yourself when a hungry Rhinoceros chases youâ, âThings to do when you are stuck in 10,000 BCâ, â10 things that you want to know about Australiaâ or âTips for organizing a bachelor partyâ. Be creative and think of some wild topic, it should inspire your viewers to post replies and comments.

4. Playing with texts
Use MS powerpoint slides to make compelling statements. Print them and show them in front of the camera and remove one page at a time (give enough time to readers to read the print), end with a final punch line. Add background music to the video and upload it.

5. Screen capture your Desktop activities
Install good screen capture software, first. Start the screen capture software to record any screen activities you do on your PC. Paint a drawing or doodle in Photoshop. Or just simply browse as you normally do. Or just type something â a letter, or a blog post. Stop the screen capture recording, edit the movie (use fast-forward technique) and add some peppy music as the background score. Thatâs it you have made a very cool movie for Youtube.

6. Make an Advert
Shoot an advert or a television commercial for McDonald's, KFC or for the poor Microsoft. Write your own script, draw a storyboard â use existing videos and your own voice and music. When you are making and advert on a well-known global brand, you are bound to get lot of viewers (and criticisms). Who knows, the MN Cs would make a way to your door to sign you up (ok, I was kidding!).

7. Dub for someone
Get some videos where political leaders make a speech or famous celebrity giving an interview to someone. Now, strip off the celebrity speakerâs voice (use volume mute in your video editing software) and add your own voice and a funny one-line. Mix different questions and use some funny one-liners from stripped from old James Bond movies.

Answer
Hi "Ms KhalifaDiva"/"Ms Mjloverrip":

Since fellow Contributor "AVDaddy" didn't quite cover the basics, I'll chime-in with a few more details.

The main trick is to have 2 cameras "rolling" (recording) or two cameras and a video switcher desk.

Live TV uses plain video cameras connected to a recording/transmitting system (along with the various microphones) via a "switcher" that selects the various views (interviewer asking & the subject answering, etc.). The microphones typically are not switched when the view changes (but they can be programmed to do so), so you hear no change in the voices when the camera view changes. Instead of an "editor" you have a "Technical Director" (TD or switcher/board op) making the visual decisions "live" instead of later in the edit room.

Non-studio video interviews (like CBS "60 Minutes" style) still use 2 cameras, but these are typically camcorders with separate recordings. They may or may not have separate audio/mike recording tracks with their 2 separate video view tracks, or they might have the same mikes patched via an audio mixer (the audio equivalent of a video switcher).

These 2 separate audio/video recordings are what AVDaddy was referring to in his Answer. The video editor now is the one who makes the decisions about which video view to use, while keeping the same audio track unchanged during the switch (edit) between Camera 1 and Camera 2. The same procedure is true if there are 3 or 4 cameras (sometimes the editor cuts to a wide "two shot" of both persons, or to the audience if there is one). Video editing software lets you separate the video track from the audio track, so you are only switching the video tracks back & forth.

When cameras & camcorders were more expensive, and/or when only one camera/cameraperson could be on an interview "shoot", the one camera would shoot "cut-aways" of the interviewer nodding or quietly "listening" after the interview was over. Clever one-camera interviews would also re-record the interviewer repeating his/her questions on-camera (even though the interview was over, and no one was in the other chair). This gave the editor more natural cut-aways to use, and also gave more options to edit with (especially if part of the interview needed to be cut out for time or content).

Good editors (and the producer/camera ops who plan the various shots ahead of time) are worth their weight in gold.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

CHEAP CAMERA

Answer
You don't want to use a camera for recording gameplay. You need a capture card. For standard definition you can use a Dazzle which are quite cheap.

For HD gameplay you can use a HD PVR but are more expensive.

How to connect a Camera to record Video Game footage?

Alucard

How can I connect a Casio Exilim 10.1 Mega Pixel Camera to record video game footage like the Angry Video Game Nerd and the Irate Gamer? It came with a cable to connect to the RCA inputs on the TV. Real answers only please. I will select the best answer to who helps the most.

Answer
It won't work. The cables are only for displaying on the Television, not the other way around. If you're wanting to do this, you may want to invest in some equipment.

At first I used Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection which came with an adapter that allowed me to record my game play videos at a reasonable definition. I got this on sale for about $90, but I believe the standard price is about $130.

I was then referred to the Hauppauge HD Personal Video Recorder, which records my videos in high quality for the current generation consoles as well as inputs for AV cables. If you're interested in seeing the quality, I have videos up on YouTube. Feel free to send me a message at any time. :-)
