I have looked at the Panasonic TS2, Sony TX5, and Olympus Stylus Rough 8010. Which one is the better of the three? Is there any other camera that I should look into?

Answer
Hello,
All three of them are considered to be good cameras. It all depends on what exactly you expect or want from it.
Sony TX5 is waterproof to 10 ft, when Panasonic TS2 and Olympus Rough 8010 are both waterproof to 33ft. And Sony TX5 has got the lowest resolution from these three. It's just 10.2 megapixels. Panasonic and Olympus have a resolution of 14MP, which is quite a great difference.
All cameras are shock-, dust-, sand- and freeze-proof. But Olympus 8010 is also a crushproof and designed to withstand a weight up to 220 pounds.
Sony TX5 gives you the opportunity to capture panoramic pictures with it's Sweep Panorama feature. Your images are automatically stitched together, which gives you the extra-wide view of the scenery.
Olympus 8010 has got the panoramic shooting option too. It also comes with a built-in 2GB memory, which is more than most cameras available on the market.
Panasonic TS2 has a good quality video recording. Although all these cameras record video in HD format. But Panasonic TS2 seems to be the most expensive out of them.
But if you do not need waterproof camera right now, Sony are releasing a new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX10 in March/April 2011. It will have a resolution of impressing 16.2 megapixels. And it is going to be the first waterproof camera that can capture 3D still images.

I would like to start recording music w/ a laptop (singing + guitar + occasional piano). I've always heard of the macs and how great they are for musicians....but I'd like to hear some more opinions. Would buying mics/ video camera/ etc be better and more affordable? suggestions please.

Answer
There are so many answers to this question, but the first question to you would be how professional do you want your recordings to be and how big is your budget? A video camera is going to give you a very low end recording. There are a zillion software recording programs to use with computer recording. Probably the most popular right now is Pro Tools, but there are many others, each with it's own learning curve. There are also hard disk recorders that you can use independent of your computer and then transfer it to your computer is you like for editing. Many of these come with a built in cd drive in which you can master and burn a cd directly from the unit. Again, much like cars, there are the bare bones models and then there are the ones with all the bells and whistles. One thing for sure is that you need a really good mic and you need a fairly soundproof place to record vocals. A good mic can make or break a good recording. I have always been a pc person, though I have friends that swear by mac. I think it depends on what you are comfortable with because you can get great software for either. Do a little research before you invest a lot of money. You might try starting out on some used gear. Try ebay or your local music store. Good luck.

I have an older digital video camera that I really don't use very much. I am trying to find a way to hook it up in the baby's-to-be room and connect it to our TV in our bedroom.

Are there certain cords that I need? Is this possible? I'm hoping to fix it so that it is on, but not recording.

You can get a wireless transmitter, or buy some extra long Video Cable.. But you may have a problem with the camera's auto off feature. if its not recording it will go off after a certain amount of time.

What would be a good video camera for capturing a hedgehog birth?

delaneythe

My hedgehog is having babies. I heard how elusive a video of an actual hedgehog giving birth is so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a low price (Under $200) video camera that can be left up all day recording. It also has to be small and easily attachable to the cage. Although those are all preferences so you can just give me the links to all suitable cameras.

Answer
I would be very careful with introducing a foreign object, especially into the the cage of a new mom. Hedgehogs are renowned for their cannibalistic behaviour often practiced when they feel threatened or unsafe with a new litter, and if a scary object with new smells and blinking lights were to be set up in what they presumed was a safe place, they babies may not have a good chance of survival.

My suggestion is to take pictures of the babies after they are two weeks old and you begin handling them, otherwise you may end up with a video of your hedgie eating her young.

Good luck!

I want to videotape different things in my classroom this year, like teacher lessons, small groups interactions, guided reading lessons, student's presentations and mini plays, etc but I personally do not hav a camera. The school's equipment is very old and rustic and the school is lacking the funds to buy new equipment. I will be using this to also do prof. development activities with the faculty and the teachers I mentor. I have visited several grants sites and can't find that much info and many have already closed their deadlines. What are the possibilities out there?

Answer
You might want to check out your local lions club, rotary club, etc. Or ask a local store to donate. Ask your principal what the policy is for video taping in the class is though. Some school district strictly prohibit any type of video recording.

Additionally, if all else fails, and your principal okays the recording you can go to a local pawn shop, charity shop, etc and see if they will donate one. It will be a tax write off for them. They may need your schools tax id. # though, so make sure you clear it with your school site.

If a college instructor kicks a student inside the classroom and states: she likes to kick too,?

then apologizes with her back turned is this a sign of deception.
A student makes a complaint about one instructor, this instructor talks to his friend who is also an instructor then she starts bullying the same student who made a complaint, what type of instructor does that make him and her? Bye the way, I have notes on all the comments with dates and time they were said and a personal hidden video camera with audio.

Answer
>'then apologizes with her back turned is this a sign of deception."

"deception"? Deception of what exactly?

>"what type of instructor does that make him and her?"

What do mean by "type"?

>"I have notes on all the comments with dates and time they were said and a personal hidden video camera with audio."

So, what's your relationship to this "student"? What's with all the recorded surveillance, do you belong to some kind of "human rights" watchdog group?

I guess that's good, because your description of this is not really clear!

IMHO there is not enough information here to draw any conclusions!

Could someone tell me whether there is a digital camera that takes great pictures and has a video recording feature with optical zoom? I am aware that the video recording on a digital camera is not as good as a camcorder. I just want a 2 in 1 so that I can take pictures and short video clips. I am torn between Canon SD780is, Canon SD880is, and I think some Panasonic DMC's have the feature. Any additional ideas would be helpful.

How to adjust the lighting on a digital camera video recording?

MonroeGirl

So I recorded a video on my digital camera, unfortunately the lighting was not the greatest. Is there anyway to enhance the video to make it brighter?

Answer
There is hope.

First off, the great thing about digital is that it's easier to get a good image from a dark one than it is from one that's overblown. The reason being is this: the sensors on a digital camera only soak up so much light before they turn to white. If a pixel is recorded as white (blown out, zebra striped, etc.), there is absolutely no way of bringing it back down to a color.

When shooting film, the exact is opposite. A bit off topic but good to know.

So, unless what you shot is completely black, and even if it is, there's sure to be some data in those pixels, and data in pixels is a good thing! Having data in a pixel means it recorded the image. However, finding that image requires the proper software.

A basic editing program with decent image control is Final Cut Pro. I would assume Windows Movie Maker and most video editing programs would have the most elementary of controls as well. What you want to look for is:

1.) Levels - If you have the option of working with levels, you can bring the blacks / shadows up to a visible range, while leaving the midtones and highlights relatively untouched.

2.) Brightness / Exposure - If you have the option of working with brightness or exposure, you can boost the blacks / shadows up to a visible level, but keep in mind anything that looks good now will become overblown or white.

3.) Saturation - If you have the option of adjusting saturation, this may be a good step after adjusting the light levels of your image. Usually when you boost the 'brightness' of an image, it also becomes more washed out, which can be countered by boosting the saturation until you get a natural look.

4.) Noise Reduction - This adjustment would be the icing on the cake. When you boost those shadows, you'll quickly notice that they're very grainy. Noise reduction helps to lower than grainy look, but also tends to slightly blur an image. Worth a try at the very least.

In the future, there are a few things you can do to avoid a repeat. Look for these settings on your camera:

-F Stop - rare for low end cameras, but if you have control of the F stop, you can adjust the brightness and depth of field (area of picture that's blurred or clear) by increasing or decreasing the numbers. The smaller the number, the brighter the picture. Also, the smaller the number, the less depth of field you have. This is also known as aperture.

-ISO / film speed - Film speed or ISO is how quickly the sensor records the image. This affects the amount of light necessary to light a scene. A lower ISO (200) is slower to absorb light, but will give you less grain or noise in your video. A higher ISO (1600) will be easier to light with little light, but will also be much more grainy (noise).

Hope that helps!

Is it ok to video record my college lectures/classes?

It's my freshman year, Calculus teacher speaks reaaaallly fast (you wouldn't even believe) and advanced Spanish teacher is from Colombia and speaks rapidly with an accent I'm not used to. Is it ok to use my flip video camera (small like a digital camera) to video my classes so I can view them later? Would that be a weird thing to do?

The camera would just sit on my desk. It wouldn't be very noticeable. In a lecture hall it would be easier, but these are like 25 student classes. Should I not even ask?

Answer
You will need to get permission to record, whether video or just audio.

You could just ask your teachers to speak a little slower. Your calculus teacher may be nervous too and not realize that he/she is speaking too quickly for the class to take notes. It's a common problem with new teachers especially. I'm sure he/she will not mind you asking (better to find out now than on evaluations at the end of the semester) and will in fact be glad to make such a small, simple change to help the class understand. Other students will appreciate it too.

The Spanish teacher might resist somewhat, but will probably be willing to at least slow down for the first couple weeks to let the class get used to her particular accent and to hearing Spanish again after a summer away from it. Either way, you will get used to the Columbian accent and it might be good for you to get used to hearing fast speech in an advanced class if you ever want to be able to understand native speakers talking at normal conversational speed.

I'd ask them first to slow down and only if that doesn't work, ask to record them. It'd be better to understand them the first time anyway, right?

Can I record a college lecture with my digi cam?

squirrel

I just bought a new camera & it makes great videos...but I don't have the means for a voice recorder too.

I was thinking of just recording it as video.

Will this work?

Any advice on recording lectures?

best answer!

Answer
You need to ask your professor if you can record the class. Some professors may allow it but others will not. Many will consider the recordings an unfair advantage because you will have access to the lectures word for word after the class ends, while everyone else only has their own notes and any materials given by the professor. The only exception is if the student in question has a disability and the use of recordings has been approved by the school to help the student in their classes.

If the professor agrees, he or she will have to ask the class if the sessions can be recorded, because the presence of a video camera may intimidate students and prevent them from asking questions or sharing thoughts with the class.

For my boyfriend bday present, I bought tickets to a Knicks game this upcoming week. We're not from NY so we gonna take the train there pretty early just to enjoy New York. I want to bring my camera obviously to take pics of the city. But I'm not sure if it'll be okay to bring my camera with me to the game. I have no where to leave it if cant. So for anyone who ACTUALLY went to a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden is it a big deal? Just wondering nothing sarcastic pleaseee.

Answer
From the MSG website:

"Cameras and Recording Devices

Video cameras, monopods, tripods, audio recording devices and cameras with telephoto or zoom lenses are not permitted inside MSG at any time. This policy will be strictly enforced. You may bring in a disposable or 35mm (with no zoom or telephoto lens) camera, however, for some events, cameras of any type and/or flash photography may be prohibited."

EDIT: I live in New York. I go to a lot of Knicks games. I don't know what kind of camera you're referring to, but if it's one that resembles something like this:

http://justdigitalcamera.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/nikon-d90-digital-camera.jpg?w=490&h=367

Then yeah, you cannot bring it inside. However, I always sneak in my digital camera. It's one of those that don't have the big protruding thingy, and it can fit right in my pocket. If you can't bring your camera, there are places in the city where you can rent a locker for a few hours and you can leave your camera in there.

Have fun!

The USB reader is a great option when offloading the memory card.

I've seen many videos where the camera has really good focus on the persons face, and then the background is kinda blurry/fuzzy. I really like that look, but many of the people say those are recorded on canon rebels. What kind of video camcorder has that feature? Please help!

Answer
All camcorders can do that - if the camera is close to the subject (you) and there is enough lighting on the subject. In your price range, basically all camcorder will be the same. dSLRs have a little more flexibility to provide "depth of field" but they are designed to capture still images. Video capture (and audio capture) are "convenience features".

Answer
Most video cameras come with video in ports. There should be a wire that splits into red (audio left), white (audio right) and yellow (video). Some have S-video input, this looks like a PS mouse connection.

Play the VHS tape on a VHS player.
Plug the 3 wires into the AUDIO OUT (L,R) and VIDEO OUT connections of the VHS player.
You should see the video appear on the digital camcorder. If not, there should be some mode setting.
Press record.

I hope that helps.

I really want to buy a camera that's really good for taking pictures at concerts, (probably outside) and recording. I have some FujiFilm 14 mega pixels camera now, but I mean I want a REALLY nice camera. I was looking into Nikon and Canon cameras but I don't know which one would be good for video recording too. I'm not really too concerned about the price, but under 4,000 would be cool!

Answer
First of all, you may not be allowed to bring a camera into the venue, I'd check first.
You might get away with smuggling it in, but personally I hate the possibility that I might either have my camera confiscated, or I won't be allowed inside.
Next problem is that concerts are a low light situation, usually also coupled with much movement as well as a fair distance from the subject.

All up, that makes it EXTREMELY challenging. The only hope of half decent concert photos are good DSLR cameras and even for those you need very good and very FAST lenses.

Small P&S cameras have tiny little sensors, so they don't do well with low light situations.
Concert photos are often blurry because there isn't enough light, so the shutter speed is too slow to hand-hold it, even worse when you add the movement of the performers to it.

You could try raising your ISO, but that will add noise to your photos.
You could try using your little flash, but it can't reach very far, and won't do you a whole lot of good other than lighting up the back of the heads directly in front of you.

I'm afraid there are a number of good reasons why the pro's carry around huge, expensive cameras, lenses, and lights.
It would be lovely if a tiny camera could do it all, but the reality is that small P&S's just can't handle concert situations very well. Some places do allow small P&S cameras (but no DSLRs). The reason for that is because they KNOW you will never get any decent shot with a little P&S.

However, I do realize that some of us a lot easier to please than others, so perhaps what is totally unacceptable to me might be fine in YOUR eyes.
If you can't have a good camera with you, at the very least make sure you learn how to you use what you have, so you can make the most out of it. Read your manual several times, attend a class, read some books on photography - it will help a lot.
If you're not interested in learning much, at the very least learn how to turn off the flash. Those tiny on-camera flashes only reach a few feet, so all you do with it is illuminate the bodies in front of you.

As to sound - there is a good reason why the audio pros carry around a lot of very big and very expensive gear. Even a good camcorder can only do so much in that regard - let alone a little P&S still camera! Don't expect miracles - don't even expect anything you'd ever want to listen to again.

Well, this coming summer, me and some friends are going to a convention. We have gone for several years, and each year, we always kid about bringing a camera and doing a documentary. This year, I am really bored, and feel like I know the convention well and need something to do.. soooo.. I was thinking of really doing a homemade documentary of it. I suppose I could sell it or post it online, but it's mainly for my own entertainment and for my friends to see. I am wondering, though, what is the cheapest and/or easiest camera/microphone/tape to use? I do not have a video camera, but do not want to dish out alot of cash. And I would idealy be recording almost 100 hours of footage. How do I contain all that? Is there any tips and hints for filming a homemade for personal use only film like this? is it too much an undertaking? etc.

You could always rent a camera from your local camera shop. Not sure where you're located but, you could visit places like Samy's or Calumet. They have a rental department although you may have to submit a credit card deposit. Some of the guys there may be able to answer any of your questions about the camera you'll be renting. Advice on a decent priced miniature video camera?

Tish

My husband is deploying to Afghanistan, I have small children and would like to purchase a set of video cameras so that I can video the kids and and he can video small clips through the day to send us later when he has internet access. Thanks for any advice! Again I would like to reiterate that it needs to be affordable with decent quality! and miniature so it's not a pain to carry around!

Answer
If you're just looking for "little" clips to send back and forth, then I suggest either a Flip or Bloggie. The Mino series, for Flip, is slim and light weight, and I believe most of them have 720p capabilities. They record for an hour, or so, worth of filming. The Ultra series, for Flip, is a little bulkier, but records for two hours. The Flip features a USB arm, that "flips" out of the camera and allows for data transfer to the computer to allow a user to send video, and such.

The "Bloggie" series, by Sony, is a slim, lightweight camera that allows a user to record video AND takes still pictures (Even while recording video). There are two versions of the "Bloggie" camera that may interest you. The "Bloggie Touch" is the more advanced, and newer, version that released recently. The image capture is rated at 12.8 megapixels, and the recording capability is 1080p (Albeit, the larger the video, the longer it'll take to send. However, you can switch between 1080p, 720p and 200-something, which is a lightweight video). There's an older version of the "Bloggie" that does the same as the touch, but only captures 5 Megapixel still photos, but it's a little cheaper.

The Flip will run you around 120 - 200 dollars, depending on the model you purchase. The Bloggie will run you around 120 - 160, or so, dollars. Both cameras have around a 2 hour recording time, and the only big difference is the quality they record in, and the ability to take stills. Both are great for "pocket cameras."

What video camera from Best buy under 300$ that will record good quality of a garage band and guitar playing?
Or if there is a better one at wal-mart/circuit city/ whatever that has good sound quality for recording loud guitar distortion noises/garage band practices that is under or near 300$, please post it here

thanks!

Answer
Your problem will be the sound, not the video. Any camcorder at the lower end of the market is easily overwhelmed by volume levels of the sort you encounter at a gig or rehearsal. Find one that has a seperate audio input (preferably stereo) and run a line out of the desk. Failing that use an external mike and attenuate the signal before it hits the camera.

How can we upload a video from our video camera onto facebook?

lovedance4

Hello. My mom wants to upload a video of me playing guitar onto facebook. We have one of those video cameras where you record everything onto a DVD. I was wondering how we would go about turning it into a file, so that we would be about to upload it onto facebook. Several answers would be greatly appreciated. We are slightly (ok, a lot!) technologically impaired, lol. Thanks in advance!

Answer
You would need to use a DVD ripper program like DVD Decrypter. One of my boy-buddies uses VideoStudio by Corel. which has more features than just ripping. You put the mini-disc into the DVD tray of your computer making sure it sits centrally in the little depression made for it. You will have to 'finalize' the mini DVD so that your computer can read the disc - your camera manual will tell you how to do that.

Inside VideoStudio you select "Insert DVD/DVD-VR" and point the program at the DVD and follow the prompts and the video is copied from the disc into the time-line of VideoStudio so that you can edit it - add lots of different videos together cut out bits you don't want - add titles/music/narration - Then you can then output the project to a mpeg file and post it on FB.

I search for the best compact digital camera for taking the videos on gigs and festivals preferably aspect ratio 16:9. All cams have poor sound quality when it comes to the electronic music and beats.
I don't really want a big camcorder, something easy to carry around with good BASS SOUND RECORDING. Price doesn't matter, in fact nothing matters except good sound quality.

The product of SONY is Best!

What cheap camera to buy that has autofocus while you record?

Hey I would like a nice cheap compact digital camera that can autofocus while you record a video. Im not looking for any HD ones just a cheap normal one.

Answer
As a professional, I have to say that you should definitely go with Nikon, Canon, or Olympus, they have the best quality and performance.

If you want a good camera for under $100, I recommend this one. It has a great video feature.

I have a HD video recorded by my camera, I just want to edit it, but I can not import it to WMM, please help me? Thank you!

Answer
I recommend you a HD Video Converter which can convert HD TS, HD MTS, HD M2TS, HD MPEG, HD WMV, HD MPG, HD MP4, QuickTime HD MOV, HD H.264, HD RM video, etc.

It also can edit the HD movies, such as CUT a video clip, crop the movie, merge several files into one file and so on.

Hope it helps!

what is a good canon digital camera to buy?

Trinh

I am looking for a new camera, and I know that canon's are the best kind out there. So I was wondering what kind of camera to get. I want it to be pocket size and have good HD quality and good to use in low light, with HD video recording as well. Any suggestions?
And I am hoping it to be $250 or less if that is possible.
