Video Camera Questions?

Brooke M

We're having a baby soon so I'm looking to find a video camera good for just filming good ol family videos. Im looking about $200 at the most. I don't know a lot about video cameras these days. Do most save the videos to SD cards? Or is there other storage types? Also if I did get one with an SD card how many gb or whatever would I need to store a good amount of video? I just don't want to be having to constantly buy those cards. What are some reliable brands? I'm willing to spend a little more for a proven reliable brand since I want to have this camera for at least a few years. Any info I can get would be great, thanks!

Answer

you tube videos-what kind of camera/programs to use etc?

Brittany

hi all. i really want to upload quick video updates to you tube like everyone does. i have a new baby and want to use an acutally camera rather than the monitor webcam i have, so i can record at different places in my home etc. we have a sony handycam, its kinda old, but i am having such a hard time figuring out how to upload and record movies, save them to my computer etc... i have a new dell xps media computer, so i know i have programs on here to do everything, i just want an easy way to record short clips and upload them to youtube. advice on what is the best cameras to do this with and the easiest way to do it will be really appreciated! christmas is coming up and i may ask for a camera to do this with...
thanks!

Answer
OK! Any Camera that shoots 480p (that's a resolution) is good. If you're surfing youtube and see at the bottom of videos "360p" it means that you are watching it in a low quality. 480p is the youtube standard, 720p and 1080p are High definition. Ask about camera resolution anywhere they sell cameras. Canon and Kodak make good digital video cameras that work with any computer, any operation system.

Which leads me to my next tangent:

Operating systems are the base that your computer runs on. For example, Windows XP is an operating system. I use Snow Leopard on my Macs, and Windows 7 on my PCs.

The free video software that comes with certain operating systems is different for each one. On a windows machine, it's windows movie maker, or windows LIVE movie maker. They are easy to use programs that handle pictures and videos, any size or resolution. Most youtubers use that program.

On a Mac, the freeware is iMovie, or iMovie HD. iMovie HD is actually older, but is easier to use for beginners, so if you have a new mac, download it from their site, Apple.com
The newer iMovie has no special effects like the old one, but is still easy to use and can do everything the Windows movie maker can do.

Windows LIVE movie maker and iMovie both have "upload directly" options, so that you can log in right from the program and upload your video. In Windows Live movie maker, you can also choose the resolution, regardless of camera type. Since windows computers are cheaper than macs, the "any res" option is good for looking professional.

Now, beyond the free softwares (though those two are not the only ones), you have expensive commercial software such as Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Apple Final Cut (by the same people as iMovie!) and Sony Vegas.
There are "Express editions" of these, which are cheaper and easier to use, but they miss out on certain modifications. Any express/elements editions would work perfectly.

Now, before i fill your head with ideas of magical fires and special effects all over your screen, let me tell you the EASIEST way to get a video from your camera to your computer. DO you know what an SD card is? If your computer has a slot labelled "SD", than pull out the memory card on your digital camera and put it in the slot on your pc/mac/etc. Than, just go into "My computer" or "finder" and find the camera folder. Than just drag the video files onto your desktop, so they'll be ready for import!

Here are some tips on how to get subscribers and views, to maybe become a partner and make free money for doing what you love! :

Try adding a Subscribe annotation in your videos as a little reminder to your viewers
http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?annotation_id=annotation_785417&add_user=ebob101
Use that link in a link annotation except replace the ebob101 with your channel name. ebob101 is my channel name.

You can make yourself a youtube channel background to look more professional, try the dimensions 1600px by 2751px (the higher one being the height of course)

As always, quality UGC is important.
Try to be original in your videos. Play on cliches and try something new every now and again.

One of the most important things, as always, is GOOD ACTING. Have someone other than you look over your acted videos once your done with them to tell you how you could improve. It's really important to not make people want to kill you when you make a video.

As always, something as simple as filming a pet rolling around or slide-shows of beautiful nature scenes can go insanely viral. (Youtube Viral- to become popular quickly)

You could also try an animation, made with software such as pivot. Also, try to play on a cliche, such as stereo-typical Ninja movies.
Also, i made a music video called "Stalking Kitty" which is just my cat doing cute things to some home-made music. Everyone who sees it loves it, so maybe something like this would work for you.

*takes a deep breath*
ANYWAY, the point is, making a video is not that hard! Just do your best, and pick a program.
Go to http://youtube.com/user/ebob101 to make my day better!

whats a decent enough digtal video camera?

Timm

all i want is to be able to take photos of my baby for memories and to be able to video it aswell with good memory card or whatever i needd to tape it onto a dvd or video for when she gets older to see it,
what would be good memory ex:megabytes or gigabites or whatever they're called i don't have a clue what decent memory is.
what is a good make camera?

Answer
Any video camera will do the job of recording your home videos.

Your computer probably has a free video editing program. Windows Movie Maker comes in MS Windows, and you can download it for free from Microsoft if it is not already on your computer. Macs come with iLife which includes iMovie and iDVD. There are also other full version video editing programs available in free non-demo downloads for Windows, OSX, and Linux. Most have basic abilities, but some have very advanced capabilities. If you need a program that is a bit more advanced, you can purchase Sony Vegas Pro, Avid's Pinnacle Studio, or Final Cut Express for less than $100.

Unless you need a digital still photo camera for specific photography needs, the best option is to just get the best video camera you can afford. Older camcorders do not take very good photos, but several of the newer HD camcorders take very good 6 megapixel photos and sometimes better. Be careful with this since there are also many digital still photo cameras advertised as 6, 8, and even 10 megapixel video cameras. These cameras take very good photos 6-10mp photos, but they take very low resolution video - lower than SD and VGA quality in most cases.

If you need photos from your video camera, it is best in most cases to just take video. Most editing programs allow you to export video frames as very good high quality photos - much better than what most video cameras and some digital still photo can take in the photo mode. This works best with HD video recordings.

The real question for your situation is what format will be best to record in. Well, since your computer is specifically set up for DV tape, and DV tape is designed for long term storage, a camcorder that records to HDV (or miniDV) tape is recommended. This is the most economical recording media, and it is the only consumer-level recording media that has long term storage ability.

Be sure to NOT purchase the basic consumer grade tape from Wal-Mart and similar stores. Go online to Amazon and get the Professional AY-DVM63PQ Professional quality tape. These tapes are built with 2-3 times the quality of the standard tape, and you can get them on Amazon in packs of 10 for half the price of consumer grade tape at Wal-Mart and other stores. You can also choose to get the HDV marked tape which is even better, but you will definitely pay for them.

If you choose different recording medium, or if you want to start editing your dv tape video, you will also need a good hard drive with at least 500gb of storage. Many external 500gb drives are as low as $100, and if you have a desktop, you can add a second internal hard drive to your system for even less. If you do add a second hard drive to your system (especially your desktop), it is recommended that you use the drive only for your video needs. If you need to store other material on the drive, then it is best that you partition a section of the drive for video only.

Either way, it is very easy to record video to tape, store it, capture it to the computer via Firewire, edit it, and burn it to DVD or save it to another format for uploading to a website or adding to email.

How can I use my video camera for a baby monitor?

Abe

I have an older digital video camera that I really don't use very much. I am trying to find a way to hook it up in the baby's-to-be room and connect it to our TV in our bedroom.

Are there certain cords that I need? Is this possible? I'm hoping to fix it so that it is on, but not recording.

Answer
You can get a wireless transmitter, or buy some extra long Video Cable.. But you may have a problem with the camera's auto off feature. if its not recording it will go off after a certain amount of time.

My husband and I are expecting a baby in 8 weeks and are looking into purchasing a video camera. So many options out there right now. We need something more on the simple side. We were thinking about a Sony, but not sure..any suggestions? Hard Disk or DVD style?

Answer
You should buy either a hdd or a mini dv tape recorder. Alot of people say mini dv brings good quality. But so does HDD, hard disk drive. Dvd isn't great because it doesn't record for a long time and that a special moment might be missed because the dvd ran out of space. Furthermore, Hdd is better because you don't want to be dealing with messy tapes and an hour recording for each tape. Hdd has good quality also. I suggest you also buy sony camcorders because they last long and they do have good quality. Also get standard defintion because high defintion isn't great, you can't watch it on normal dvd players and your computer must pack some punch or a good processor to handle hd. So go with standard defintion.
For sony, I would recommend you the dcr-sr300 and i have it for about a week and its great. If you live in New york city, you can go to J and R world, or order online at jrworld because its alot cheaper. about 100 dollars cheaper. Also, its the same thing as circuit city and best buy. To me circuit city and bestbuy in stores suck because their return policy isn't that great, 15% they keep when you decide to return the camcorder. Also, their modals tend to be old and aren't that great. So either order online with bestbuy, etc other companies or find a camcorder near a store near you. Don't go to those store that aren't well knowned, such as those stupid stores on the corner selling electronics.

Addition: go to cnet.com and check the reviews and peoples' opinion before buying a camcorder. Maybe another brand than sony might be better. Camcorders varies but I think Sony is one of the best out there.

Hoped I help you and have a safe pregnancy with your wonderful baby! =)

Looking for a video camera that has flash, or a flash can be added?

megaskibal

I need a new video camera for my baby's 1st birthday. I need something that can take good videos when the lighting isn't that good. I want something that either has a flash built in or I can attach a flash to it. I need something not crazy expensive, but something good. Thanks!!

Answer
Don't use flash with a video camera, flash is for still photography. What you need is a video light. No need to think expensive here, a Clamp on, $12 light from your local Hardware Store, a bulb, another $10 or so, done.

HD camcorders interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video.

What would be a good video camera for capturing a hedgehog birth?

delaneythe

My hedgehog is having babies. I heard how elusive a video of an actual hedgehog giving birth is so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a low price (Under $200) video camera that can be left up all day recording. It also has to be small and easily attachable to the cage. Although those are all preferences so you can just give me the links to all suitable cameras.

Answer
I would be very careful with introducing a foreign object, especially into the the cage of a new mom. Hedgehogs are renowned for their cannibalistic behaviour often practiced when they feel threatened or unsafe with a new litter, and if a scary object with new smells and blinking lights were to be set up in what they presumed was a safe place, they babies may not have a good chance of survival.

My suggestion is to take pictures of the babies after they are two weeks old and you begin handling them, otherwise you may end up with a video of your hedgie eating her young.

Good luck!

Can my babies fathers mother record me as evidence in court?

lovemybabe

My babies fathers mother and him obviously, showed up to pick up my daughter, he ended up threatening my fiancé (he had a gun and a knife on him to pick up the baby, he has a gun license but I still don't think it's right he brought it to pick up a 3 year old little girl) but his mother after the fact started recording me with her video camera because I started flipping out and called 911, can they use this as evidence in court to try to prove me unfit?

Answer
Can my babies fathers mother record me as evidence in court?
The answer is "that depends".

Some states have wiretap laws that require both parties that are being recorded to give their consent to be recorded. This applies to audio but not to video. If the woman was audiotaping you without consent and not acting as a law enforcement officer with a warrant then she may have committed a crime. This could be a little fuzzy if the event occurred in a public place. If this was in your home then you have a much more solid case of you being a victim of illegal wiretapping. Keep in mind that making threats is also illegal and pointing a gun in some states is considered an assault, so the video could show criminal activity on the part of the baby daddy.
Flipping out in general is not a crime, threatening language and illegal wiretapping are. They have a lot more to loose than you do.

Good luck and hope this helps.

On a personal note, it's never a good idea to have children with people you aren't married too. It is incredible the amount of trouble this can cause to both the parents and children, studies have shown that children born out of wedlock are much more likely to end up in poverty and be incarcerated.

This isn't legal advice, good luck and hope this helps.

4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes – four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders.

Whats a good video camera to take to Iraq or Afganistan?

Chris Ryan

I want to get a digital video camera to take with me to either Iraq or Afganistan, but I want one that is small enough to carry, but durable enough taht it can take a couple bumps and not shatter.

Answer
If you're willing to spend the money, get a POV camera, strap that baby on to your helmet and when the shit hits the fan... hit record and get some!!

http://www.vio-pov.com/

Go and purchase a BIG flash card, and believe me they make BIG ones but once again you're going to have to pay some decent money! You may also want to look into a solar panel charger to charge the batteries when out in the field, you can find those rather cheap!

Good luck!

My bf and I were video taping the baby with a combo video camera/mp3/digital camera and got the cutest video ever, but it came out so dark you can't see the baby's face. I need to know how to edit it so you can see the baby. I tried paint shop pro, but it won't let me upload the video, any ideas?

Answer
Making exposure corrections on videos is done using professional equipment and software ... in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Unfortunately you will need to re-shoot with better lighting.

PLEASE HELP? How do i transfer videos from my VIDEO CAMERA to my COMPUTER?

Shaylin R

Okay, i have a "videoHi8" Camera, and i have videos i'd like to transfer to my computer, you know birthdays.. Vacations, New babys! Things like that! My video camera TAPES on TAPES. But it came with a "A/V OUT" Plug on the CAMERA, but it didnt come with a CORD?

Answer
You probably can't put your footage directly from the camera to the computer. Cameras that record on Hi8 tapes are old and came around before cameras were built to connect to a personal computer. I did a little searching around and found this Wiki about hi8, and it has a section about transferring hi8 to the computer. Here's the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hi8#Transferring_8.C2.A0mm_footage_to_a_computer_for_editing

You might also want to look up the model of your camera for more specific information.
