Small digital camera that records HD video in WMV format?

Q. So I bought a Canon SD1400, which records 720p video in MOV format. I don't like MOV, b/c I can't open multiple files as a playlist like I can with WMV movies. So I want a good, small digital camera that records HD video in the WMV format. Any ideas?

A. Well the facts are as stated, there aren't any that shoot in wmv. Hey, I don't like mov either but that's what my eos t1i does. I like the camera and the brand enough that I was willing to sacrifice a little convience for the sake of high quality.

I'm using an editor by Roxio called Creator. It includes a converter that does my work in getting to
wmv. It also maintains the quality which, by the way, the cheap download programs won't do. I know I've tried and the quality goes straight in the trash. Retail for Creator about $100.

What cheap camera to buy that has autofocus while you record?
Q. Hey I would like a nice cheap compact digital camera that can autofocus while you record a video. Im not looking for any HD ones just a cheap normal one.

A. As a professional, I have to say that you should definitely go with Nikon, Canon, or Olympus, they have the best quality and performance.

If you want a good camera for under $100, I recommend this one. It has a great video feature.

I'm looking for a 12 mp minimum, HD video recording digital camera?
Q. I'm looking for a digital camera with HD video recording capability.
I want it to have a descent optical zoom, a minimum of 12 mega pixels and good recording capabilities at night time (and photo).
What kind of camera/make should I look for? Any suggestions?

A. Megapixels means nothing these days.. do you print out on A2? No? Good then you don't need more then 8 Megapixels

Right that said a good lens does matters. Good glass is so nice to have! And of course looking for image quality always important sometimes it is better to invest in a more limited model with better image quality because.. well you want the best right?

Night time recording? What is your budget? The point is that the laws of nature don't change to make a picture or a video you need LIGHT! Raising ISO' s will only get you so far..

I guess a DSLR could, it has a nice big sensor so low noise and coupled with the right lens [in your case a wide aperture prime] it would give relative noise free images and video at night. Do buy one with an external sound jack though because the in build microphones are usually pretty good at catching wind noise.

So most basic DSLR with HD video + Prime Lens + Tripod [really you are going to need it] and the basic set of memory cards and batteries. Oh and of course an external Microphone.. mmm $1100?

You know a HD video camera is cheaper.. but won't make as nice still shots ;)

How do I transfer a home video on a mini DV to a windows media file?

Q. I recorded a soccer game on a Canon Optura XI digital video camera. The camera takes the mini DV tapes. I want to transfer it onto my computer in either a media player file or similar. How do I do that?

A. Hopefully your camera and computer have fire wire. USB is slow and quality is not good.First plug fire wire to computer and then to camera. Turn on camera and it should be automatically picked upped by computer.A window will pop up and give you a list of options of programs to use.Media player should be one of them. You can then record on to your computer and edit the video. Later on you can burn it to a DVD if you have a burner in your computer.

How do you record a long length video from a samsung galaxy s2 skyrocket?
Q. i just got a samsung galaxy s2 skyrocket and i want my dad to record my soccer game but i dont have a real video camera so hes going to use my phone. its 1080hd so its a good video recorder but i dont think it will record that long, is there any apps or something that will let it record a long time without stopping? thanks in advance. oh and it has to be free.

A. I think you can record as long as your micro sd card space lasts.

Which camcorder is good for filming soccer games?
Q. I want to film my brothers soccer games and training so I wanted to buy a camcorder.
My budget is pretty low so nothing fancy.
My friend is selling Samsung HMX-F80BP, and I want to know can this one record soccer/football games. I would use tripod and just go left right left right with occasional zooming.

I also thought about Canon vixia m30 or r30 but those are a bit over budget so I probably will reconsider them in a few months.

A. HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes – four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

How can we upload a video from our video camera onto facebook?

Q. Hello. My mom wants to upload a video of me playing guitar onto facebook. We have one of those video cameras where you record everything onto a DVD. I was wondering how we would go about turning it into a file, so that we would be about to upload it onto facebook. Several answers would be greatly appreciated. We are slightly (ok, a lot!) technologically impaired, lol. Thanks in advance!

A. You would need to use a DVD ripper program like DVD Decrypter. One of my boy-buddies uses VideoStudio by Corel. which has more features than just ripping. You put the mini-disc into the DVD tray of your computer making sure it sits centrally in the little depression made for it. You will have to 'finalize' the mini DVD so that your computer can read the disc - your camera manual will tell you how to do that.

Inside VideoStudio you select "Insert DVD/DVD-VR" and point the program at the DVD and follow the prompts and the video is copied from the disc into the time-line of VideoStudio so that you can edit it - add lots of different videos together cut out bits you don't want - add titles/music/narration - Then you can then output the project to a mpeg file and post it on FB.

What type of camera should I get?
Q. I want to start recording guitar covers and I was thinking of getting an hd webcam to do it but I'm not sure if it will lag or give me poor results with capturing movement. I've also looked into video cameras too, but I don't want to spend a fortune for just shooting guitar videos. Any recommendations would help a lot, thanks!

A. What you need is a good audio recording system

Look here

These recorders are used in conjunction with dSLR's when used as a video camera.

What video camera would be good for me?
Q. My friend and I are trying to record ourselves singing and playing guitar and also want to make a music video. What kind of video camera would be good for us? I know they can be expensive if we want a good one, but something under $200 would be great!

A. There are some basic video cameras around that are quite cheap. Check at your local camera store and tell them your budget. They may have cameras that have been traded in but still in good order. Most new cameras use built in disks or flash memory but older cameras that use digital tapes can give a good picture. If you want to make a music video you might need a tripod for the camera, and also download the recording to a computer for editing. Windows already has basic video editing software if you are on a tight budget.

What is a good video camera for recording meetings?

Q. I was hoping to get some opinions on a video cam for recording meetings what i need to do is record a meeting from appx. 50 feet away with decent video and audio if possible.

price really isnt a factor but nothing extreme just something to get the job done

A. I would suggest you check out - Sony DCRSR47R. This one is meant for distance shooting as it has a 60X optical zoom which brings you closer to the actual scene. You can record up to 45 hours with normal recording mode (LP mode). There are many more useful functions this camcorder offers and I would suggest you check the website I have pasted below for detailed information.

how can i live broadcast my meetings with my camera?
Q. i have a pc and a camera. Just wondering if i can use my camera to record my services and upload them to the web immediately?

A. Sure. Just record a video of the service with the camera, then connect the camera to your PC and copy the files over, or remove the memory card and put that into a USB reader for your PC and copy the files over. From there, you can upload the video files to YouTube or something.

This assumes that you have a camera that records on a memory card or in internal memory. If it records on tape, things get more complicated, because you have to run the video through a converter or special graphics card to get digital files that you can upload onto the PC.

Having a video editing program helps, too. Windows Movie Maker can let you do simple editing that can improve the finished video a lot.

Is there a market for supplying people with portable covert conversation documenting video cameras? #Security?
Q. Well it would be nice to (yes this is kinda creepy) have proof of intellectual property whilst discussing private business plans with a mentor. Some of my money ideas have been stolen and used but I would have had no way to prove it. Anyways, is this a technology? And could I provide it to people if I could learn how to build the covert portable cameras?

A. Covert cameras for personal use are seen as fun little toys but if you could market it to business owners or high end business professionals that could use some sort of documentation when in meetings then you might have something. NOW with that said it is illegal to record audio without the consent of one or all the parties involved so that will be a hurdle. To give you some ideas of covert cameras I have put in some links to a few I found with demo video so you can see them in action.

Q. I want to use a photo camera with video recording capability, to record a video, but I want to control the recording, and save it directly on my mac. This way I don't have to be behind the camera to start and stop the recording, and I don't have to transfer the video files afterwards.

Which cameras would work for that?

A. any camera now days better if have a memory card though not many that have not then simply put into the mc slot or use an extender and edit :) if honest a little unsure on your exact question but also there are many softwares available and though i use windows there are loads of recording softwares to record using webcam too

I need a good quality, cheap digital video camera for recording live band performances & uploading to youtube?
Q. My bf plays for a band and I record with my kodak zd15. The sound sucks really bad. I need a nice camera that video records and has good audio for live band performance. I looked into the Mino HD 8GB Flip, I really liked the upload your own photo thing but it has a lot of downs.
Is the cannon sd1000 a better choice?
I need help.

A. Consumer-grade camcorders don’t record audio very well especially music. Most have omni-directional microphones that tend to pick up all sound around the cam, like sound bouncing off walls, etc. And some are not even stereo mics. If your Kodak ZD15 is okay with the video imagery, then use a separate audio recorder which is the best way to record for music video projects. You did not state your budget but something like a Zoom H1 digital recorder ($99.00) and used with a quality microphone is the cheapest option. But better yet, something like the Zoom H4n or Tascam DR100 (both around $290.00). They can use two mics (and the two on-board mics) and the ability to balance up to 4 channels. The important part is the microphone and for a way to adjust the gain, as music will peak and fall throughout the performance, and each instrument has its own unique sound waves. Using ear-muff style headphones will allow you to listen more accurately what the mic(s) is picking up. You may be able to rent a recorder and try it out to see if it will work for you. Check with your local music instrument stores. If you still are leaning towards another camcorder, just make sure it has an external microphone port and headphone port.

What's a good camera for recording video and taking pictures?

Q. I want a fancy camera that isn't over $600. I want it to be digital and have an amazing zoom and close up picture ability. I also want it to be able to record video too.

A. With that price your fancy camera could actually become one of the digital SLR cameras.

One is $40 above your budget but real great is Nikon D3000

I am looking for a good shockproof, waterproof, dust proof digital camera and don't know which is best?
Q. I have looked at the Panasonic TS2, Sony TX5, and Olympus Stylus Rough 8010. Which one is the better of the three? Is there any other camera that I should look into?

A. Hello,
All three of them are considered to be good cameras. It all depends on what exactly you expect or want from it.
Sony TX5 is waterproof to 10 ft, when Panasonic TS2 and Olympus Rough 8010 are both waterproof to 33ft. And Sony TX5 has got the lowest resolution from these three. It's just 10.2 megapixels. Panasonic and Olympus have a resolution of 14MP, which is quite a great difference.
All cameras are shock-, dust-, sand- and freeze-proof. But Olympus 8010 is also a crushproof and designed to withstand a weight up to 220 pounds.
Sony TX5 gives you the opportunity to capture panoramic pictures with it's Sweep Panorama feature. Your images are automatically stitched together, which gives you the extra-wide view of the scenery.
Olympus 8010 has got the panoramic shooting option too. It also comes with a built-in 2GB memory, which is more than most cameras available on the market.
Panasonic TS2 has a good quality video recording. Although all these cameras record video in HD format. But Panasonic TS2 seems to be the most expensive out of them.
But if you do not need waterproof camera right now, Sony are releasing a new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX10 in March/April 2011. It will have a resolution of impressing 16.2 megapixels. And it is going to be the first waterproof camera that can capture 3D still images.

What is the best and cheapest video camera for recording at night?

Q. Lately we have been having some very vicious thunderstorms. Within the last 10 days I have seen a mesocyclone and a tornado (not in the same day!). There is an amazing lightning show going on north of here, and my Panasonic mini DV won't pick up the lightning in the clouds. Neither will the crappy camera on my cell phone. =(

A. I have a Canon FS11. Try the Canon FS100 ($400) and then buy a 2GB SD card for like $30. You can't really go lower than that price because cameras around and below this range don't usually have the best capabilities at night. If you want, check out a Sony Handycam. Sonys have this "nightshot" feature that uses infrared technology to see in the dark. Hope this helps!

A. seriously, try calling local golf courses, or instructors if they're listed in your phone book...(oops showing my age with the phone book reference) Anyhow, make some calls to local teaching pros and simply ask them what equipment they are using. You may be surprised at hoe economical these guys are. They don't get rich at this profession! Good Luck.

What is a good but not really expensive video camera to buy?

Q. I want to buy a video camera to make videos like stuff to put on you tube or record concerts, what is a good quality video camera I can get for not extremly expensive? (not over 125$)

A. I recommend the Fujifilm Finepix S1000fd, it's not actually a video camera but takes great video, and also awesome pictures.

what camera would you say is best for recording concerts?
Q. Video/Digital camera maybe under $250?
I go to a lot of shows and i only have a cheap 10mp digital camera. Its sound comes out full of static and you can't understand anything.

What camera or recording device is best for recording concerts/shows/anything loud?

A. The "best" will be any device with manual audio control. The automatic audio gain control in any camcorder get overpowered by loud audio resulting in clipping and that muddy and static sound.

Correctly using manual audio control prevents that clipping because it bypasses the auto mic gain control. The least expensive current camcorders - of which I am aware - with manual audio control are the Canon HV30 and the Sony HDR-HC9. They are well outside your budget.

An alternative is to keep using the camcorder you are using and get an external audio recording device - a field recorder - like those from Zoom, Edirol, Marantz, Sony, and others. When you edit the video, import the audio from the field recorder, sync the audio, then mute the audio that came in with the video.

Where can i find a professional video camera?

Q. Where can i find a professional video camera like the one they use in movies?? and also i am looking for microphones that they use in movies. they have to be windproof.
Please Please help me, i've been looking for a really good camera for a long time. I really want to make a professional movie :)??? Thank you so much!

A. Start with a budget.

Stay through the credits at the next movie you see at a theater. You will typically see Panavision. Arri is a pretty common *film* camera, too. The moving image is captured to *film*, the film is sent for processing, each frame is digitized & returned to the editor for that phase of the project. The audio system is separate from the *film* camera. The audio is combined with the moving image during editing. Synchronizing uses SMTPE code. These cameras start at about $100,000, Add more for the lenses. Generally, they are leased for the duration of the the project.

RED (Scarlet, Epic, One) & Silicon Imaging ("Slumdog Millionaire") (among a few others) make digital cameras that have been used for theatrical release projects. The cameras start at around $40,000. Add more for lenses and other accessories. Panasonic (Varicam) & Sony (CineAlta) are in this area, too. The audio system is separate from the camera (even though some of these can capture audio) & the audio is combined with the moving image during editing.

Then there's camcorders. At the high end are Sony HDCAM/XDCAM & Panasonic P2 series. They record video along with audio, but use of a separate audio system rather than the audio captured by the camera is *strongly* suggested. These range anywhere from $30,000 to $80,000.

Step down to the mid-range of pro-grade camcorders and that gets us to the Sony PDW area & the higher end of the HVR series. Canon XF300, Panasonic AVCAM & a few others are in this mix. About $10,000 to ~$40,000. These record audio but use of a separate audio system rather than the audio captured by the camera is *strongly* suggested.

Step down to the low end of pro-grade camcorders: Sony HVR-Z5, Panasonic AG-HVX200, JVC GY-HM series ~$5,000 to $10,000 range. These record audio but use of a separate audio system rather than the audio captured by the camera is *strongly* suggested.

Prosumers in the Sony HDR-FX1000 (the original "Paranormal Activity") & entry-level pro grade (Canon XHA1, XF100) get us below $5,000. These record audio but use of a separate audio system rather than the audio captured by the camera is *strongly* suggested.

High end consumer-grade cams are around $1,500. Mid-range consumer-grade cams are around $900. These record audio but use of a separate audio system rather than the audio captured by the camera is *strongly* suggested.

And I'll stop with camcorder pricing here.

Mics: Sometimes shotgun mics mounted to a boom pole are used in movies. Sennheiser, ElectroVoice & Audio Technica are my favorites. A mid-range shotgun mic is about $1,000. Use of a "fuzzy" (also called a "dead cat") or a zeppelin will help to create the dead-air space between the mic element & wind.

Sometimes wireless clip-on mics are used. "Lavalier". I prefer them wireless. Sennheiser makes good low-end systems starting at around $600. Sony & others make good (more expensive) systems.

Lots of times the audio is "made". That's what Foley artists do. And there's always dubbing the dialog (in a studio - so different types of condenser mics) after the fact.

Then there's lights, cables, cables, stands, steadying devices (tripod, camera crane, Steadycam vest system, dolly, etc.), power, cases, audio recording equipment & LOTS more. You can rent/hire a grip truck & crew for lots of this.

Add makeup, wardrobe, feeding the talent, permits, all sorts of legal stuff... and your computer being able to deal with the editing...

In the spectrum of consumer cameras through pro-grade camcorders, the visible difference is the lens & imaging chip are small at the consumer level. They cannot do well under poor lighting conditions. As the price increases, the lens & imaging chip get bigger, improving the low-light capture behavior. If all you can afford is a sub-$3,000 camcorder, expect to spend $ on lighting.

Some experienced folks are able to use the convenience feature of dSLRs for movies. This takes a lot more effort because of the characteristics & requirements of video capture using this convenience feature. But they *can* capture great video when used by someone with skill & experience.

If the less expensive cameras could do as good of a job as the more expensive cameras then the professional productions would use them. Since this work is their *job*, they want to spend as little $ as possible on equipment (they can keep more $ in their pocket).

But Step 1 is to set a budget and see what fits.

To answer your question directly: for affordable "really good camera" equipment used by many consumers & professionals, check bhphotovideo.com and adorama.com

Write the concept, the outline, the script, story-board it all & run the project - because that is what lots of films are - a big "project managed" activity... Have fun!

Can I take my digital camera to a Rammstein concert?
Q. Well I am going to see Rammstein perform at the LA forum tomorrow and on the site it says that professional cameras and audio/video recording devices are not allowed. Does this include my little casio exilim digital camera? I want to take pictures and I don't want to use my phone (it sucks).

Thanks. :D

A. Yeah you just can't try to sell the pictures and vidoes you take. As long as you use it just for yourself and not to sell.

Looking for a professional video camcorder for independent film making?
Q. I'm looking for a professional video camera that can be used for an independent feature film. I want image quality that I can be proud of so that I can send my work off to a Film Festival. My budget is between $2000-3000 and don't want to go over $5000. The camera MUST have a place to plug in an external microphone and must come with a lens (hopefully a detachable one). I'd like for the camera to be used on multiple brands of tripods and dolly equipment.

A. My definition of "professional video camcorder includes:
Lens filter diameter 70mm or larger
Imaging chip (preferably 3CCD, though 3CMOS is acceptable)

When you find the camcorder with these attributes, all the other stuff is included:
audio input
manual audio gain control
separate manual focus and zoom rings on the lens barrel
XLR audio connectors
lots of other stuff.

An interchangeable lens system can be found on the low end using dSLR cameras and a few prosumer camcorders... or *really* high end camcorders. Your price range is the low end of pro-grade camcorders and includes the prosumer Sony HDR-FX1000 and pro Canon XHA1. We don't know which tripods or dollys you'll be using, but generally the standard 1/4" thread mount is available and standard.

A person with experience, skill and a compelling story can provide great results. A person with no experience and skill generally won't - it does not matter how good the equipment is.

Tip: You should be recording the audio externally - not depending on the camcorder's audio recording subsection (other than for synching the external audio)...

Depending on the Film Festival you plan to enter, it is very possible your "competition" is using equipment like the Red Epic or something from Silicon Imaging.

What kind of point and shoot camera has a fast shutter response?

Q. Just what the question says. I'm a person that loves to take pictures, but I don't do it because I can't find a camera that has a fast shutter response. Just to be clear, I'm talking about the time between pressing the button to take the picture and when the picture actually takes. I see the perfect opportunity for photos all the time, but then by the time the picture is actually taken, whatever I'm taking a photo of has moved.

I don't want an SLR because I'm not a photographer and it'd really be just a waist of money. I'm looking for digital point and shoot cameras. I'd also like to have the possibility of HD video recording on the camera but my heart isn't set on it.

A. Shutter lag is caused by the camera's Auto Focus (AF) system and if it's too sluggish, taking photos can be quite frustrating. On cameras that do have problems with shutter lag...the trick to minimize lag is to allow the camera to lock in the focus by half pressing the shutter button, then when focus has been achieved...hold it there till the moment is right, then press the button down fully to take the shot. This allows less missed opportunities, but is still somewhat annoying having to do it all the time.

Luckily, these days you can get compact/point and shoot cameras that have minimal shutter lag, so are very quick to take a picture. This is due to improved processors and much improved AF systems.

In the link below you will see a list of some reviewed camera models. There are many more models that aren't in the list...you would have to see older reviews on the same site. As you can see, the camera up the top of the list takes around 0.15 secs to take one photo. The slowest camera in the list takes around 1.6 secs to take a picture. Times for taking 5 photos and using the flash are also included...
http://www.cameras.co.uk/html/shutter-lag-comparisons.cfm?sort=ShutterLag

Be aware that the fastest compact cameras don't necessarily take the best quality photos...so it's best to read individual reviews before making a decision.

Here are other review pages that include image samples and performance times...

Can you get still images from video recorded from a DSLR?
Q. I'm wondering if it is possible to get still images from a HD video that was recorded on a digital SLR camera. Thanks in advance.

A. Yes, but you won't get anything beyond 2 MP because HD is just that.

Does HD video on a regular digital camera compare to a Flip camera?
Q. I don't want to lug around a still camera and a pocket HD video camera. Is the video recording on the new digital point & shoots comparable to the Flip and it's competitors, or is a dedicated video camera better?

A. the video quality of most digital point and shoot cameras is about equivilent to the quality of the flip video. it may be even better if the digital camera will shoot HD Video (720 or 1080)
Neither of these will compare to the quality of the better traditional video camera's which are available today.
Another thing you may want to consider is a Digital SLR which has HD Video shooting, such as the Canon T1i or T21 or the Nikon D5000.
These will take video that is superior to anything but professional HD video cameras, for a very reasonable price.
The user interface will take some getting used to, since the camera won't auto focus while shooting, and the zoom function will be performed by rotating the zoom dial on the lens, but I can attest that the video quality is supurb.

what is a high quality camera for recording music?

Q. what is a high quality camera for recording music (singing, piano, electric guitar, drums)?
how can you make music videos smooth and professional sounding? i don't have a studio either.

A. Well, you don't say what kind of budget your have but, you want high quality so, start with this article - http://www.videomaker.com/article/8243/ - Now, that you understand a little about what's involved, here is one of the least expensive high quality cameras. The average price if a high qualtiy camera is around $10,000.

However, for recording live sound, if you want the highest quality, you need to record it with Pro Tools recording software directly off the mixer that the band plays through and you then need to sync your video with the Pro Tools audio using Pro Tools.

What do I need and how much do I need to be able to record music in my house?
Q. I would like to start recording music w/ a laptop (singing + guitar + occasional piano). I've always heard of the macs and how great they are for musicians....but I'd like to hear some more opinions. Would buying mics/ video camera/ etc be better and more affordable? suggestions please.

A. There are so many answers to this question, but the first question to you would be how professional do you want your recordings to be and how big is your budget? A video camera is going to give you a very low end recording. There are a zillion software recording programs to use with computer recording. Probably the most popular right now is Pro Tools, but there are many others, each with it's own learning curve. There are also hard disk recorders that you can use independent of your computer and then transfer it to your computer is you like for editing. Many of these come with a built in cd drive in which you can master and burn a cd directly from the unit. Again, much like cars, there are the bare bones models and then there are the ones with all the bells and whistles. One thing for sure is that you need a really good mic and you need a fairly soundproof place to record vocals. A good mic can make or break a good recording. I have always been a pc person, though I have friends that swear by mac. I think it depends on what you are comfortable with because you can get great software for either. Do a little research before you invest a lot of money. You might try starting out on some used gear. Try ebay or your local music store. Good luck.

which is more telling, a mirror, a camera or a video recording ?

Q. I've seen all three of myself, in the mirror, on camera and on a video recording. I find myself to be the best looking in a mirror. I can handle the way I look in the mirror, but especially in pictures
I think I look ugly. So which more telling, the camera or the mirror or the video recording ?

A. Actually, your image in the mirror is seen in reverse. That is the way you see yourself most often and the way you think you look. The still photo or video is the way you do look. The video recording contains the most information and would be the most telling.

What is the best camera to use for photography and video recording at concerts?
Q. I really want to buy a camera that's really good for taking pictures at concerts, (probably outside) and recording. I have some FujiFilm 14 mega pixels camera now, but I mean I want a REALLY nice camera. I was looking into Nikon and Canon cameras but I don't know which one would be good for video recording too. I'm not really too concerned about the price, but under 4,000 would be cool!

A. First of all, you may not be allowed to bring a camera into the venue, I'd check first.
You might get away with smuggling it in, but personally I hate the possibility that I might either have my camera confiscated, or I won't be allowed inside.
Next problem is that concerts are a low light situation, usually also coupled with much movement as well as a fair distance from the subject.

All up, that makes it EXTREMELY challenging. The only hope of half decent concert photos are good DSLR cameras and even for those you need very good and very FAST lenses.

Small P&S cameras have tiny little sensors, so they don't do well with low light situations.
Concert photos are often blurry because there isn't enough light, so the shutter speed is too slow to hand-hold it, even worse when you add the movement of the performers to it.

You could try raising your ISO, but that will add noise to your photos.
You could try using your little flash, but it can't reach very far, and won't do you a whole lot of good other than lighting up the back of the heads directly in front of you.

I'm afraid there are a number of good reasons why the pro's carry around huge, expensive cameras, lenses, and lights.
It would be lovely if a tiny camera could do it all, but the reality is that small P&S's just can't handle concert situations very well. Some places do allow small P&S cameras (but no DSLRs). The reason for that is because they KNOW you will never get any decent shot with a little P&S.

However, I do realize that some of us a lot easier to please than others, so perhaps what is totally unacceptable to me might be fine in YOUR eyes.
If you can't have a good camera with you, at the very least make sure you learn how to you use what you have, so you can make the most out of it. Read your manual several times, attend a class, read some books on photography - it will help a lot.
If you're not interested in learning much, at the very least learn how to turn off the flash. Those tiny on-camera flashes only reach a few feet, so all you do with it is illuminate the bodies in front of you.

As to sound - there is a good reason why the audio pros carry around a lot of very big and very expensive gear. Even a good camcorder can only do so much in that regard - let alone a little P&S still camera! Don't expect miracles - don't even expect anything you'd ever want to listen to again.

Q. I already have a nikon dslr and just need a small camera to take pictures when i dont have the big one with me. my max price is $160 or so. i would like it to have HD Video recording capabilities. i was thinking of the nikon s5100, or the panasonic lumix fh20 or fp3, or relative canon models like the sd1300is. thanks
thanks people. it would also be good if it could be bought at sears.

A. I would consider Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH20 14.1 MP Digital Camera
* HD Movie Recording
* Ultra Compact 28mm Lens and 8X Optical Zoom
* Intelligent Auto with Mega OIS
* High Speed AF

I want to buy a DSLR camera and I am not a professional photographer?
Q. I want video recording and still photo capability. Can you recommend a good DSLR camera.

DSLR Cameras, all Makes, all Models, all have the same problem when video taping some long videos, all overheat at the 13 to 18 minute mark, depending on the Make and Model. This is unavoidable, it all has to with the fact, video is an afterthought in DSLR camera production.

A. you can consider Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18 MP CMOS APS-C Digital SLR Camera
- 18 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor

Digital cameras that has auto focus on video recording?

Q. So,im looking for a digital camera (preferably compact ones) that could auto focus all the way thru my video recording and has capability to shoot macro photos. If possible,a focus lens that could take photos on people with blurred background. Is there such digital camera out in the market?Sorry if the question is silly but im a complete noob in techs!:P

A. The Coolpix S9100 is Nikon’s third travel-zoom camera, featuring an extended 18x zoom lens with a very versatile focal range of 25-450mm. Other key features of the slim S9100 include a 12 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, high resolution 921k dot 3 inch LCD screen, full 1080p high-definition movies with stereo sound, sensor-shift Vibration Reduction, a shooting mode dial and a fast auto-focus system.

how do i get my camera to auto-focus when recording a video?
Q. i have a samsung compact digital camera (not an SLR) & it is 12.2 mega pixels. not sure what make but when im recording videos and have something up close, it just doesn't focus, is there something i need to do to make it focus? HELP

A. P&S cameras (actually all camera lenses) have a minimum focal distance. For example the Samsung SL600 is 31.5" on normal and 39.4" on telephoto.

You would need to look up the specs for your particular model.

What is a good compact camera for recording high-volume, high-definition audio/video?
Q. Hello everybody. Here is the problem I'm having:

I am an enthusiastic concert attendee, and I go to a lot of Metal shows. I also like to record parts of the shows I go to, so I can go back and re-live the experience later. But these shows are LOUD! Around 115-130 decibels, to be more specific. And at that kind of high volume, most camera microphones are overloaded and the resulting videos have sound that is distorted, scratchy, and unlistenable.

What I have tried already:

I have owned a Fujifilm JV-100 in the past, and I currently own a Canon SX-260 HS and neither of these have decent audio. My fiancée's old Sony Cybershot DSC-W50, on the other hand, has great sound quality. The only issue with that is that it's ancient, shoots poor quality photos, and doesn't have full-HD video capability. I'm also not sure if the newer models of Sony Cybershots have the same quality of internal microphone and when I asked a sales representative about this and she was unable to give me an answer.

Limitations:

Using an actual camcorder is out of the question, as is buying an expensive digital SLR. It must be a compact, point-and-shoot camera because otherwise the event staff/venue security deem it a "professional device" and will not allow it inside the concert venues without a press pass, which I obviously do not have. I also cannot use a separate audio recording device, because it is impractical and I need the convenience of all the components (camera, video recorder, audio recorder) in one single device.

What I need:

Simply put, I need a compact, point-and-shoot camera that is capable of shooting in low-light settings, that is capable of recording HD video, and has an internal microphone that doesn't fuzz out at high volumes. I also need it on a budget, which is less than $400.

Please offer me some suggestions for what model camera I should look into buying. I'm tired of wasting my money on cameras that don't work under the rigorous conditions I have described. If there are other metalheads out there who've had the same problem, I'd really appreciate it if you could give me your recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Panasonic Lumix LX5 [ 10.1 megapixels ]

Which camcorder is good for filming soccer games?

Q. I want to film my brothers soccer games and training so I wanted to buy a camcorder.
My budget is pretty low so nothing fancy.
My friend is selling Samsung HMX-F80BP, and I want to know can this one record soccer/football games. I would use tripod and just go left right left right with occasional zooming.

I also thought about Canon vixia m30 or r30 but those are a bit over budget so I probably will reconsider them in a few months.

With a 20x optical zoom Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T Lens and 1.2-megapixel image capture to Memory Stick Duo media, your moments will never fade away. Additionally, when you record video in high-definition, you can dual-record still images at the same time. So no matter the occasion, the HDR-FX7 is the perfect camcorder.

Best Video camera for highschool football?
Q. I am planning on making a Recruiting video to get into college for football...My Stepdad will be recording the games but we need a Camcorder...

We need one with HD quality to film games that are at night, "Under the Lights"

Were looking at the $300-$600 range

Any advice/tips would be appreciated

THANKS!!!!

A. Low compression video capture/storage. In your price range, this means NOTHING that records to flash memory or hard disc drive - because they use very high compression AVCHD. This also means you are limited to miniDV tape (because the external memory recorder modules for HDV are about 2x your budget) and the ONLY camcorder - new - that comes close is the Canon HV40. Be sure to use a decent tripod. Also, be sure to learn to use the white balance so the view of being "under the lights" is not too bad.

One is $40 above your budget but real great is Nikon D3000

but if you want to save budget, actually these $100-$300 cameras will do the tasks just fine for amateur photography.
