all dSLR type cameras have very limited continuous recording time. It doesn't matter how many GB are on your card, you only have 30 minutes before the sensor overheats in video mode and shuts off automatically. If you decide to use the highest video resolution of the camera, it will stop after recording 4 GB because that is the largest allowable file size, usually about 10 minutes. No camera battery is good for 8 hours of use, most cameras are sized for 2 hours operation with the standard battery.

what you need is a HDD type camcorder with an AC power adapter.

ghosts are camera shy, most likely they won't perform for you. If it is noisy, then you would be better off using a digital audio recorder which you could place in a room and walk away so as to not scare the poor poltergeist off. my olympus records for several hours on batteries.

It is not practical to do that.

Flash is only for still pictures, meaning 1 press of the shutter 1 flash, 1 picture, this is called 1 frame. This has to sync with your camera or you don't get a picture. Some cameras can give you a few flashes continuous but this is never used for video.

video needs continuous source of light because video shoots anywhere from 30 frames down to a few frames per second, also depends if your camera has capability to adjust frames per second for video.

For example surveillance camera systems shoot from 1 to 30 frames per second, they are usually set 2 or 5 frames to save on storage space.

flash also needs to recharge between use, usually takes a few seconds for flash to charge up and give that tremendous burst of light for that 1 picture. Better models can recycle the flash faster, it also discharges your batteries really fast.

What is a good video camera for a movie at night?

Q. My friends and I are going to make a horror movie for a movie class and we are wondering what to get. we want something that records and recods good quality in the dark and in the woods.

Side question: How do actual movie companies make action scenes in the dark? i know you have to have lighting but is there a special camera to do that?

Side side question: since we will be in the woods the camera needs to not pick up wind. any ideas?
for the budget, how about under a $100? ha ha i know that's not gonna get me much but still, maybe under $250 would be better.

So you're in film class and you had to ask your two side questions? What are they teaching you?

Side question 1: There are a number of ways to achieve footage at night depending on the shot you're looking for. If you can work light into your shot, then obviously using light rigs is going to be the way to go. Another angle if you don't mind a limited distance in your shot is to have a light on your camera. A light ring will give you even spread, an LED cluster will give you shadows.

A camera with IR (night vision) capabilities is also an option if you can work that into your film. A camera with a large CMOS sensor will give you better footage at night without the assistance of much/any extra lighting, if you go this route you're looking for something with a 3 or lower lux rating. And lastly you can skip all the low light stuff, film in good lighting making use of shadows, then lower the saturation and add a few filters in post.

Side question 2: Audio wise you're not going to be using the inbuilt camera mic if you're after quality audio. You need an external microphone, a wind barrier (deadcat) and a way to record the audio. The zoom h1n is a reasonably cheap external recorder that might suit your needs. There are some great reasonably priced shotgun mics available as well, look for something like the Azden SMX-10

To your main question: This really depends on your budget. If you're working in low light conditions, as I say a lux rating of 3 or lower is essential, the lower you can get it the better the low light performance, same goes for the CMOS sensor, the bigger you get that, the better the low light performance. If you want a recommendation as to specific camera though, you need to give me a budget to work within, cameras cost anywhere between a few hundred dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I have a Canon FS11. Try the Canon FS100 ($400) and then buy a 2GB SD card for like $30. You can't really go lower than that price because cameras around and below this range don't usually have the best capabilities at night. If you want, check out a Sony Handycam. Sonys have this "nightshot" feature that uses infrared technology to see in the dark. Hope this helps!

What application are you looking for?
You will already discover that your camera is night vision. Your camera is sensitive to infrared light, and will capture it. Prove it, switch it on and record yourself holding the TV remote. Press buttons on the remote. Play back and see that you can see the light blinking from the remote. The camera can see the IR light, but your eyes cannot. Your camera is already night vision ready.

To turn it into a night vision camera, you probably want to use it in the dark with no *visible* light source. Therefore you are going to need an IR spot light. The size and strength (brightness) of this spot light will be based on where you are using it. If you are just taking shots in a small room, i t wont need to be so big. If you want to see what your dog is doing in the back yard at night, you might need something much bigger.

On TV, when you see night vision footage, they are always using a huge IR spot light. You just cant see this light with your eyes. But you will notice that in the footage you can see shadows, hence, a spot light or two is being used. You can search for IR lights on the internet. LED ones are available, which are great for short distances of maybe upto a metre.

You can also use IR filters placed over normal lights. Cheaper, but you WILL see a red glow from under these ligths, it won't be invisible. I don't know where to get them from, sorry. Research IR filters. This is what they are using in the jungle when taking night vision shots. The animals dont care if there is a bit of a red glow coming from something.

Lights that are purely IR alone are probably going to only be the LED variety, as they have a narrow bandwidth spectrum of light. Very bright lights are usually incandescent ligths (burning filiment inside a glass tube) which have a broad spectrum, and filters are used to narrow the spectrum, but the filters are never perfect, hence the red glow from them.

Interestingly, a heat source can be used as IR light. Very inefficient though. If you have and electric room heater, or electric hot plates on your stove, switch them on, switch off the light, turn on the camera, and you will see that they light up the room. However, most of the power consumed is heat and not light.

The Product Description section for this model on Amazon.com indicates that with the maximum amount of memory installed (2x32GB or 64GB of memory) the camera can record "more than 20 hours" of video. You have 1/4 of that amount (16GB), so I expect that you can record at least five hours.

The night vision capability should not make any difference in how much space is needed to record video, but look for settings to change the resolution: lower settings will use less space. I could not find a manual online, but if you have the user's Guide, it may contain information about storage requirements at different settings.

Well memory will likely be the same for them all becuase you'll be shooting to DV tape. Therefore what you should be looking for is the following features

1. A lot of manual control over things like exposure, white balance and color
2. the largest CCD chip you can get for your money (better for shooting in low light / night)

But generally the larger the CCD chip and the more manual control you will have to pay more money.

Hopefully, something that's not too demanding on the money. Basically, I want a camera that can record during night; something that I can record to a hard drive/memory stick (maybe about 8 hours of continuous recording). I want to do this to monitor my premises as there are vandals that come along every now and then, who are deliberately targeting me.

You want a surveillance camera with infrared and a surveillance/security DVR located in a different place.

While it is possible to use a hard drive based camcorder that can record multiple hours, you will need to have power run to it as there are no batteries available that last that long. Assuming there is power available, the built-in infrared emitter that the Sony cameras have (with "SuperNightShot" mode) have only about an 8 foot throw to effectively see anything in low light. Camcorders were not designed to remain outside 24/7.

The better option is to use 2 or more surveillance cameras - wired or wireless (though even wireless ones need a wire for power) that feed video to a multichannel surveillance digital video recorder.

Fry's Electronics (and other sites) have a good selection of this stuff... For low-end consumer gear that may be enough for your needs, Swann, Clover and several other manufacturers have complete kits - with weather tight housings, cables, monitors and even computer network connectivity for monitoring over the internet.

I was wondering if there is a video camera that records digitally but also can record IR and night vision simultaneously -- that is, if I look at this camera's viewing screen, I can switch from digital, to IR, or to night vision at the flip of a switch.

You'll have enough trouble finding a camera that can shoot in both visible light and "night vision" (near infrared—just outside of human vision, but not able to be felt as heat).

Yes it has been done but remember a camera especially newer digital ones have a wider spectrum of vision than the naked eye and if you are serious about hunting or using a rifle in the dark you really should consider using a proper night vision scope.
If you try to improvise by using night goggles with an existing scope at night you run into all sorts of issues, judging distances inaccurately being one of them which in turn could be a hindrance on your personal safety not to mention others.

Make sure you use the correct tool for the job it just makes sense that way. There are many manufacturers that make night vision hunting scopes in all prices ranges.

ATN, Tasco, Bushnell, Yukon and Nightowl are all worth checking out.

I watched the playback the day after and it seems that from the time I appeared to fall asleep to when I woke up, I had about four erections during the night. How can I get them to stop?

nahhh not really, i bought a flip mino hd and it is really handy and stuff but i noticed the camera shakiness is terrible but over all it is prty descent but u might wana do some research on the kodak zi8, because its 1080p and it has an external mic pluggin, wich is really really handy, im thinking about selling my flip and getting one of those so i would get a kodak zi8 but thats just my opinion/

Well memory will likely be the same for them all becuase you'll be shooting to DV tape. Therefore what you should be looking for is the following features

1. A lot of manual control over things like exposure, white balance and color
2. the largest CCD chip you can get for your money (better for shooting in low light / night)

But generally the larger the CCD chip and the more manual control you will have to pay more money.

Basically, I want a camera that can record during night; something that I can record to a hard drive/memory stick (maybe about 8 hours of continuous recording). I want to do this to monitor my premises as there are vandals that come along every now and then, who are deliberately targeting me.

You want a surveillance camera with infrared and a surveillance/security DVR located in a different place.

While it is possible to use a hard drive based camcorder that can record multiple hours, you will need to have power run to it as there are no batteries available that last that long. Assuming there is power available, the built-in infrared emitter that the Sony cameras have (with "SuperNightShot" mode) have only about an 8 foot throw to effectively see anything in low light. Camcorders were not designed to remain outside 24/7.

The better option is to use 2 or more surveillance cameras - wired or wireless (though even wireless ones need a wire for power) that feed video to a multichannel surveillance digital video recorder.

Fry's Electronics (and other sites) have a good selection of this stuff... For low-end consumer gear that may be enough for your needs, Swann, Clover and several other manufacturers have complete kits - with weather tight housings, cables, monitors and even computer network connectivity for monitoring over the internet.

i know that the $300 is not a lot for an hd video camera and that it won't be the greatest video quality ever, but i'm just a college kid so my funds are limited to say the least. i record tennis matches with my brother, and we usually play at night, as well as basketball games (during the day). any thoughts?

no consumer HD camera can record sports action except as a blur. that is because of the super high compression. MPEG4, AVCHD and similar codecs record only one actual frame and then throw out the next 7, giving it a GOF factor of 8. on playback the missing frames have to be guessed at by interpolation, which gives blurry jumpy results.

the solution is to use the system most widely used by action sports videographers, which is miniDV. while not HD it can be shot in the widescreen mode so the picture will fill an HDTV screen. And you can get one for under $300, look at the Canon ZR960.

Hollywood films actually use a lot of artificial light (carefully placed at certain angles) for many night-time shots. Watch several old movies on Turner Classics (especially film-noir B&W movies like "The Maltese Falcon" or "D.O.A.") for night-time lit scenes like this one:

There is an amazing lightning show going on north of here, and my Panasonic mini DV won't pick up the lightning in the clouds. Neither will the crappy camera on my cell phone. =(

A. I have a Canon FS11. Try the Canon FS100 ($400) and then buy a 2GB SD card for like $30. You can't really go lower than that price because cameras around and below this range don't usually have the best capabilities at night. If you want, check out a Sony Handycam. how well can u use a scope with night vision?

Q. Say i have night vision goggles. Can i look through a non night vision rifle scope with my goggles on and see a magnified image in night vision?

Ive seen it happen with video cameras. a guy put his night vision over his video camera and recorded in night vision. however he was in the military and was using high quality night vision.

Also what generation would you suggest for hunting? 1? 2?
i can only really afford 1 or 2.

A. Yes it has been done but remember a camera especially newer digital ones have a wider spectrum of vision than the naked eye and if you are serious about hunting or using a rifle in the dark you really should consider using a proper night vision scope.
If you try to improvise by using night goggles with an existing scope at night you run into all sorts of issues, judging distances inaccurately being one of them which in turn could be a hindrance on your personal safety not to mention others.

Make sure you use the correct tool for the job it just makes sense that way. There are many manufacturers that make night vision hunting scopes in all prices ranges.

ATN, Tasco, Bushnell, Yukon and Nightowl are all worth checking out.

Q. I recently purchased a Bell & Howell Night Vision video camera. I also purchased two 8G SD cards. Does anyone know how many hours of recording they will hold? Thank you!

A. Is it the DNV900HD camera? Knowing the exact model would have made it easier to look up the specifications. The Product Description section for this model on Amazon.com indicates that with the maximum amount of memory installed (2x32GB or 64GB of memory) the camera can record "more than 20 hours" of video. You have 1/4 of that amount (16GB), so I expect that you can record at least five hours.

The night vision capability should not make any difference in how much space is needed to record video, but look for settings to change the resolution: lower settings will use less space. I could not find a manual online, but if you have the user's Guide, it may contain information about storage requirements at different settings.
