i want a camera that i can use to record videos with but still acts like a SLR camera..any suggestions? is the canon sx110 a good choice for this? is there any other camera?

Answer
If you are really on a very tight budget and want the best quality for the money, check out the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 which is reviewed at:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/panasonic_fz28.html

It just came out on November 4, 2008.

It's an all-in-one 10.1 megapixel DSLR camera which includes (i) built-in image stabilization; (ii) HDTV quality video [Quicktime]; (iii) a 18x zoom [27 - 486 mm (35mm equiv.)] "Leica" lense for nature photography; (iv) up to 0.39 inch macro option; (v) up to 6400 ASA; (vi) takes up to 380 pictures per 120 min. battery charge; (vii) has a "burst speed" of 13 fps; and sells new for $270 at amazon.com.

Here's an actual handheld picture of the moon:

What DSLR camera that have good video recording result?

best dslr camera for video recording image

Mintca

I was going to buy iPhone for its good video quality (of course with all iOS glory), and then I considered for handycam. Then my friend told me that DSLR, especially Nikon D5100 is a good choice since I may be interested in photography as well. Then I read this article saying that Canon is better at video recording than Nikon. Any suggestion of what camera I should buy? Preferably in the same cost range with Nikon D5100? Or Nikon D5100 is good enough? Considering I'm really new in this photography and filming thing (actually only for family purposed filming).

Answer
If video is important, then a camcorder is preferred. It is designed to capture video. And audio. capturing still images is a secondary "convenience feature".

If stills are important, than use a still image capture device. Like a dSLR. Capturing video (and audio) is a secondary "convenience feature". For example, if you read the documentation available for download from the dSLR manufacturer's web sites, you will find they will overheat when capturing video "for prolonged periods" (about 15-25 minutes maximum) and stop video capture until it cools down (takes a long time)... or... check their built-in (mono) mic and no (or extremely limited) manual audio control. This means no stereo without an external mic and adding something like a XLR adapter (~$350) to plug into the stereo audio input + use the audio gain controls... or... use an external audio recording device like a Zoom H2, H2n, H4n and take the extra steps to import and sync the audio when editing...

Basically you end up spending more money and time you would not spend if you use the tool designed for the task.

I am not saying dSLRs can't capture good video - they can - but they cannot be treated like a camcorder and they cannot replace a camcorder. There are workarounds for lots of things that you normally don't need to worry about when using a camcorder...

Don't forget the tripod or other steadying device, and shotgun mic (Audio Technica), stereo mic, wireless mic and maybe a video light... you'll need these no matter which video capture device you get. Even a dSLR.

Camcorders in the price range you are looking at include the Canon HF M series.

Is the Nikon 1 J3 a good camera to use for HD video recording?

I will mainly be using the camera for recording videos, hence why I want it to be able to record in full HD. However, I will be using it to take pictures every now and again! What are you views on recording on this camera? Or is there a better camera which I could use? I was looking at the DSLR cameras, but I think they will be too bulky if I was just carrying it around.

Yes, the DSLR is bulky to carry around, but they really impress people that you know what you are doing. Regardless of your skill level.

While a camcorder is better, the Nikon 1 J3 is a good camera for video. Here is a review of its predecessor.

I have an older digital video camera that I really don't use very much. I am trying to find a way to hook it up in the baby's-to-be room and connect it to our TV in our bedroom.

Are there certain cords that I need? Is this possible? I'm hoping to fix it so that it is on, but not recording.

I am a college basketball coach. It would be extremely efficient if, after filming the game, we had a finished copy of the game already burnt onto a dvd.

I am trying to skip the step of have two mini-dvds and having to burn them onto a larger disc after the game.

Answer
This is actually pretty easy.

You will need two things - a dvd recorder and a video camera with an audio/video output.

It will work better if you have the camera on a tripod. Connect the AV output on the camera to the AV input on the recorder using the AV cable that comes with the camera.

Both items should be available at any Walmart or online. Your current camera may work too as long as it has an AV output.

If you need more help, feel free to e-mail me.

How much should I charge to film and edit basketball games?

Lawrence18

There youth basketball games, hockey games, all sports. How much should I charge the parents. For some people I will be doing highlights, for some people I will just record the seasons for them, and clean them up in the editing rooms. How much per game or season, is $20 a game too much?

Answer
is it just one parent on the team asking for the videos? if more than one want the same thing, then you can charge less for copies, since it's very cheap to make a copy once you are done - $20 for the one - if 3 parents want copies, then make it $15 each - you get $45 total for the game. video camera are so cheap anymore - almost everyone who has kids in sports probably already has one

that's a lot of time spent editing - how much per hour will that come to for your $20?

I would charge probably $10 per game per copy just for an unedited video of each game - let the people do their own editing - the kids can probably figure that out on their own

Faerie

I'm a pianist and I need to record a video of my playing to apply for a scholarship. My church has a beautiful, massive Steinway Grand piano, the biggest one available. I would love to use it, but my family only owns home video cameras. Where could I find the proper equipment to make a good recording? Is it possible to hook a mic up to the inside of the piano? If so, how? Do you have any other ideas?

Answer
The best thing you can possibly do is to find a good audio person to record your performance. It will cost you a lot less than buying all the equipment you need. Once you have a recording you can make a video and you will use the audio track from that recording session. Try Craigslist to find an audio person that can record for you. They will come with mics and recorders. You can easily spend over $1,000 on some recording equipment and then you still don't know how to use it.

What would i need to wirelessly send audio from sound board to camera about 100 feet away?

Q. I record church services on Sunday and need to get an audio feed from the sound board. The camera is typically set up about 100 feet away. i don't want to run a cable. Is there a way (similar to wireless mics) to attach a transmitter to the sound board and a receiver on the camcorder?

any suggestions on specific device? Thanks!

http://miltizme.blogspot.com
Forgive me for not providing all of the necessary details.

Currently, we use a consumer-grade, single-CCD digital camcorder, but we will be getting a prosumer 3-CCD camcorder with XLR mic inputs. The sound board has XLR outputs. This would facilitate following "the_dude's" suggestion.

i also use Adobe Premiere Pro for editing so, i could record the audio right at the board and synch it on the PC later, which is "jimbob92065's" answer.

I would need to record the audio from six mics, a drum set and a Conga drum so, a shotgun mic wouldn't acomplish all that with the sound quality i'd need. thanks all for your answers...

Answer
There are a few ways to accomplish what you would like to do. However, without knowing the specifics of your board and your camera, it's a little difficult to offer advice.

I assume you're looking to get the audio onto the tape (or whatever media your camera uses) while you record the service?

That being the case, you can easily use any wireless transmitter and receiver (Shure manufacture great product, as does Samson) as long as you have compatible output from your board (1/4 TRS or XLR is most common) and feet it to the transmitter.

The receiver would need to connect to an audio input on your camera; without knowing what sort of camera you have, I can't tell you whether or not this is possible. If you have any sort of TRS input (most folks call this a "phono plug") you can purchase adapters to accomodate difference in size (most likely you'll have a 1/8" input if any)

If you have the neccessary inputs/outputs, you could even use a wireless guitar setup.

The other option you have is to record straight from the board and sync the audio with the video using relatively inexpensive software and your PC. This method will offer you the most flexibility, as you will be able to mix levels at your convenience, rather than "on the fly"

I am a certified audio engineer, so I know a litttttttle about this stuff. (sarcasm!) If you would like to contact me, feel free.

What video cameras are not sensitive to sound?

Brittany M

I need a camera to record my friend's and I. We make a LOT of really loud noise.. I also wanted to take this camera to a concert one day and (the Lady I want to see is really loud) I notice a bunch of people record concerts of hers on youtube and they pick up very good sound quality. It is really important that we get a non sensitive to sound video camera so we can create these videos for our facebook page and youtube channel. Maybe even school projects.

Answer
The issue is not whether a particular camcorder or camera that records video is "sensitive" to sound, but rather whether the audio gain can be controlled so when loud audio happens, the camcorder's automatic audio gain control is not overwhelmed resulting in static or muddy audio being recorded.

For consumer grade camcorders at the ow end, *some* have a setting called "mic attenuation". "Normal" audio is recorded with attenuation off. For loud audio, go into the camcorder menu and select Mic attenuation to be on.

As the camcorders get more expensive manual audio control get more granular - that is, rather than "loud or normal" it is more like a volume control. This is the best way to go... The Canon HF R series has the attenuator selection. The HF M and HF S series have 10-12 steps to control the audio level. Similarly priced Sony and Panasonic camcorders will have similar functionality.

Good luck not getting the camcorder confiscated during the concert... once they take it, the camcorder is gone forever. Hope you can afford that.

There are a couple ways to do this. One is to sync the iPhone & computer using iTunes. Another is to open the picture or video, and email it. And lastly, another way is to connect the iPhone to a windows computer without itunes, select use as camera or open files when windows recognizes it as a new device, and copy them over.

What's the best point and shoot camera for video recording?

Krystal

What's the best point and shoot camera for video recording? Cash limit is $200. Thanks!

Answer
one of the better products in this price range is the Casio Exilim EX-Z80... it has a youtube capture (640x480 @30fps) ...it also records in a higher Wide VGA (848 x 480 @ 30 fps), perfect for watching video on a widescreen monitor or TV. and it records to the H.264/AVC AAC, MOV format... which will allow the video to be transfered to Apple multimedia devices directly without being re-encoded. There are a number of cameras that record video to other formats...such as MJPEG and Quicktime...but the audio portion is usually WAV... and that audio format uses up more space and conversion is needed when watching on PMP devices. Its currently on sale at B&H for $140. This camera is also not a slacker when it comes to other features , face detection, and image quality. Another nice unique feature for video fans is a dedicated Movie button. No need to dig though screen menus and you can go from shutter button to movie button instantly!
Good Luck and happy shooting

I am looking for a good shockproof, waterproof, dust proof digital camera and don't know which is best?

Matt W

I have looked at the Panasonic TS2, Sony TX5, and Olympus Stylus Rough 8010. Which one is the better of the three? Is there any other camera that I should look into?

Answer
Hello,
All three of them are considered to be good cameras. It all depends on what exactly you expect or want from it.
Sony TX5 is waterproof to 10 ft, when Panasonic TS2 and Olympus Rough 8010 are both waterproof to 33ft. And Sony TX5 has got the lowest resolution from these three. It's just 10.2 megapixels. Panasonic and Olympus have a resolution of 14MP, which is quite a great difference.
All cameras are shock-, dust-, sand- and freeze-proof. But Olympus 8010 is also a crushproof and designed to withstand a weight up to 220 pounds.
Sony TX5 gives you the opportunity to capture panoramic pictures with it's Sweep Panorama feature. Your images are automatically stitched together, which gives you the extra-wide view of the scenery.
Olympus 8010 has got the panoramic shooting option too. It also comes with a built-in 2GB memory, which is more than most cameras available on the market.
Panasonic TS2 has a good quality video recording. Although all these cameras record video in HD format. But Panasonic TS2 seems to be the most expensive out of them.
But if you do not need waterproof camera right now, Sony are releasing a new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX10 in March/April 2011. It will have a resolution of impressing 16.2 megapixels. And it is going to be the first waterproof camera that can capture 3D still images.

I'm wondering right now what is the current best deal for a digital video camera that connects easily to your computer so you are able to transfer the video you recorded from your camera to your computer for video editing and movie making. Right now the current one i have is a basic straight to mini cassette so I'm forced to rewind when i mess up recoding something. I'm trying to find something 500 or below. Also please include a link of the camcorder you suggest

Answer
There is a new type of digital video camera that encompasses a hard drive. As a result, there is no tapes or other types of media that need to be removed from the camera in order to upload the video to a pc, basically you just connect the camera to your pc and upload the video from the camera's hard drive to the hard drive on your pc. Because the video camera has a hard drive you can record over 10 hours worth of quality videos. That is pretty amazing. Currently reviews are pointing to the JVC Everio GZ-MG35 as a great camera that encompasses the hard drive technology.

Are camcorders good for still photography as well?

Sunny Deol

Or are they only meant for video recording?
How about the Sony DCR SX21E?

I am finding it difficult to choose between a digital camera and a camcorder, so asking.

Answer
If you think about it, you could answer your own question.

Video is shot at 30 fps, which means that you have no ability to use controlled shutter speeds like 30 seconds or 1/4000th second and all those in between

Pick the camera that most suits your needs.

If you want to shoot still images, buy a digital camera.

If you want to shoot video, buy a video camera

If you want to shoot both, some dSLR cameras have a video feature, you you may want to read this first.

I really want to buy a camera that's really good for taking pictures at concerts, (probably outside) and recording. I have some FujiFilm 14 mega pixels camera now, but I mean I want a REALLY nice camera. I was looking into Nikon and Canon cameras but I don't know which one would be good for video recording too. I'm not really too concerned about the price, but under 4,000 would be cool!

Answer
First of all, you may not be allowed to bring a camera into the venue, I'd check first.
You might get away with smuggling it in, but personally I hate the possibility that I might either have my camera confiscated, or I won't be allowed inside.
Next problem is that concerts are a low light situation, usually also coupled with much movement as well as a fair distance from the subject.

All up, that makes it EXTREMELY challenging. The only hope of half decent concert photos are good DSLR cameras and even for those you need very good and very FAST lenses.

Small P&S cameras have tiny little sensors, so they don't do well with low light situations.
Concert photos are often blurry because there isn't enough light, so the shutter speed is too slow to hand-hold it, even worse when you add the movement of the performers to it.

You could try raising your ISO, but that will add noise to your photos.
You could try using your little flash, but it can't reach very far, and won't do you a whole lot of good other than lighting up the back of the heads directly in front of you.

I'm afraid there are a number of good reasons why the pro's carry around huge, expensive cameras, lenses, and lights.
It would be lovely if a tiny camera could do it all, but the reality is that small P&S's just can't handle concert situations very well. Some places do allow small P&S cameras (but no DSLRs). The reason for that is because they KNOW you will never get any decent shot with a little P&S.

However, I do realize that some of us a lot easier to please than others, so perhaps what is totally unacceptable to me might be fine in YOUR eyes.
If you can't have a good camera with you, at the very least make sure you learn how to you use what you have, so you can make the most out of it. Read your manual several times, attend a class, read some books on photography - it will help a lot.
If you're not interested in learning much, at the very least learn how to turn off the flash. Those tiny on-camera flashes only reach a few feet, so all you do with it is illuminate the bodies in front of you.

As to sound - there is a good reason why the audio pros carry around a lot of very big and very expensive gear. Even a good camcorder can only do so much in that regard - let alone a little P&S still camera! Don't expect miracles - don't even expect anything you'd ever want to listen to again.

How to turn off blur when recording on digital camera?

zendersto

Im using photo camera 9.1 CASIO, when I use it to record video, then move the camera around , the screen became blur and the fps decreased. Im gonna use it to make some shots for movies but I cant if its still blur like that.

Is there anyway to disable the blur and make the fps for the recording to be increased?

Answer
The folks in the camcorder category could probably give you a better answer. My answer is to slow down your panning.

Q. I have a small videos of my children that I took with my kodak easy share digital camera, one is 38 seconds and the other is 45 seconds long. My mom lives in another country and I haven't seen her in seven years and she had moved away before I met and married my husband and had babies (now 3yr old and 1yr old). Because she has never seen my babies I'm always emailing pics that I took with my new kodak easy share camera...I noticed just a few days ago that I could also record my children on it like a video camera but with no sound. I tried emailing them as attachments but on both my yahoo and msn emails, they only attach a max. of 10 mb and even though these are small videos they are like 11 - 13 mb so I'm wondering if there is a way to make them smaller, please, so that my mom can see her grandbabies for the first time moving around playing, instead of being still in a picture.

I think you can right click the folder then compress into a zip or rar file....the other person has to have the proper program to run it though. I may be wrong on this though....

What percentage of people do you think use electronic devices without ever changing default values?

Barkley Ho

I will bet that over 90% of the people with digital cameras, video cameras, and even cell phones have no idea on how to change any settings. I had a friend who thought his video camera was broken because it would not keep recording when he took his finger off the button. One of his children had changed the setting. How many people with 8 mega pixel cameras leave it at the highest setting and only view pictures on their computer. How many people with satellite tv scan through every channel in the directory because they have no idea you can set favorites. I can go on forever.

Answer
80-90% easy. If i had the time, I'd find you a bunch of articles and research that I have read recently about this phenomenon..

basically, when a company is looking to improve a product, they go about surveying and testing what their consumers "want" in a product..

not in context, on a piece of paper.. of course you're going to say, "yeah I want the ability to start my washing machine and defrost my car from my video camera." In practice, of course, no one would ever use such features.. the end result is a junked up consumer interface full of stuff that (while functional) serves little purpose to the common consumer outside of showing off gadgets to your neighbor, good reviews in consumer reports, and bells and whistles for salespeople.

Is there something I can buy (such as a microphone) that will give the videos I record on my digital camera a better sound? I recently went to a concert with my new digital camera in tow and when I got home, the videos I had recorded were terrible! You couldn't even hear the singer. I realize concerts will have much more bass than everyday situations, but still, I'd like to have nice videos of concerts. Anyway, thanks for your help!

Answer
If you think you can sneak a boom mike into a concert, I'd use that, that'll give you the best quality. But you can just use microphones for a some what better quality.

How do I use a digital camera as a web cam on my pc?

onthebeach

I have a good digital camera, that is able to video record. I also have a way to hook it up to my pc and transfer pic & vids to my files. I would like to use this camera as a web cam, my old one is pretty cheap & doesn't work so well. Does any one know how to hook up a digital camera as a web cam?

Answer
I really don't think you are able to do this with most modern digital cameras. The USB connection is used to transfer pics and video between PC and camera, not to stream live video. You can get a descent web cam for around $30 though!
Good Luck =)

My bf and I were video taping the baby with a combo video camera/mp3/digital camera and got the cutest video ever, but it came out so dark you can't see the baby's face. I need to know how to edit it so you can see the baby. I tried paint shop pro, but it won't let me upload the video, any ideas?

Answer
Making exposure corrections on videos is done using professional equipment and software ... in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Unfortunately you will need to re-shoot with better lighting.

Can my babies fathers mother record me as evidence in court?

lovemybabe

My babies fathers mother and him obviously, showed up to pick up my daughter, he ended up threatening my fiancé (he had a gun and a knife on him to pick up the baby, he has a gun license but I still don't think it's right he brought it to pick up a 3 year old little girl) but his mother after the fact started recording me with her video camera because I started flipping out and called 911, can they use this as evidence in court to try to prove me unfit?

Answer
Can my babies fathers mother record me as evidence in court?
The answer is "that depends".

Some states have wiretap laws that require both parties that are being recorded to give their consent to be recorded. This applies to audio but not to video. If the woman was audiotaping you without consent and not acting as a law enforcement officer with a warrant then she may have committed a crime. This could be a little fuzzy if the event occurred in a public place. If this was in your home then you have a much more solid case of you being a victim of illegal wiretapping. Keep in mind that making threats is also illegal and pointing a gun in some states is considered an assault, so the video could show criminal activity on the part of the baby daddy.
Flipping out in general is not a crime, threatening language and illegal wiretapping are. They have a lot more to loose than you do.

Good luck and hope this helps.

On a personal note, it's never a good idea to have children with people you aren't married too. It is incredible the amount of trouble this can cause to both the parents and children, studies have shown that children born out of wedlock are much more likely to end up in poverty and be incarcerated.

This isn't legal advice, good luck and hope this helps.
