We are trying to broadcast our church service in our nursery so the ladies in the back can still watch the services. We already have a screen in the front of the church that we put powerpoint things on.. I was thinking maybe we could hook a camcorder up to the computer and broadcast that way but we would need something to hook up to the front screen that would allow the others in the nursery to see what we see on our screen... Anything will be appreciated!!! thanks!

Video recording my church services?

We are a pretty small congregation (around 100 people) and we're wanting to start recording our services to post online for some of our members that are either home bound or stationed somewhere in the military and can't be at our services. We're have a pretty small budget and aren't wanting to create something extraordinary and emmy winning. We were planning on just having one camera mounted on the ceiling in the center aisle of the church, pointing at the pulpit. We were going to get one of the joy stick controllers for the panning and zooming, and sending the feed to a laptop to be saved and later uploaded. The problem is no one any video recording experience and aren't sure what all we need or what type of software is needed.

So basically, we're looking for 1 camera and wanting to know what kind would be the best. The joystick used to control it, and what type of software we would need to save it to the computer.

The last thing is the question about the audio. We have a lapel mic and it's hooked up to a soundboard. Would we be able to use the audio feed and video feed together when recording.

I realize this is a lot to try to explain via the internet but any help would be extremely appreciated. Also, we're wanting to stay withing a budget of $1,000 to $2,000. Thanks

I want a webcam or video camera that will plug into a computer USB port and be able to record and broadcast live using upstream.tv. It will be used from the balcony of a church, about 25 yards from the pastor. Under $100 please. It needs to have good sound quality and good video quality. If there is something you know of that is a little more expensive but worth the price feel free to post it. Thanks!

Webcams are just not designed to get good video or audio from 25 yards away. They are designed to be used more like 25 inches away! From 25 yards away, the audio will be quiet and echo-ey, and the video will make the pastor look like a flyspeck (or, if you use digital zoom instead of optical zoom, like a checkerboard).

Assuming you already own a camcorder, the solution is to use a video capture device on your computer (such as a Pinnacle Dazzle -- see link below) and the A/V output cable from the camcorder. I'm going to assume that's what you are going to use in the instructions below...

Video: Put the camcorder on a tripod and zoom it in. Now (by using the camcorder's optical zoom) your pastor won't look like a flyspeck or a checkerboard, and the tripod will keep your audience from getting motion sickness. Connect the Dazzle's video input (yellow) to the camcorder's video output (also yellow).

Audio: Sound quality from the camcorder's built-in mic will be somewhat better than the webcam's built-in mic. But for better sound quality, you need an external mic (a shotgun mic would be best type), and still better would be a feed from the church sound system. If you are using the Dazzle unit below, your can tell the church A/V expert that the kind of feed you need is a line-level unbalanced RCA connection with a "y" adapter. Connect the Dazzle's audio inputs (red and white [sometimes red and black]) to either the camcorder's audio output (same colors) or to the church audio feed (whatever the church provides). I would also recommend using headphones to monitor the sound instead of the computer's speakers.

So, assuming you already own a camcorder and tripod, your investment is the A/V capture unit below (list price $80 but street prices from about $50!) and some face time with the church AV person -- and your results will be superior to using a webcam. You will need internet access at the church, but I assume you know that. Good luck!

I am looking for a good camera that I can use to record my Sunday Morning church services. We have elderly member who can't make it to the services any longer, but we would like to record it and send it to them? We're looking for a camera with the price range of $400.00. We need it to be good video quality and sound quality. Also, the precher wears a clip-on microphone. Is there anyway to pick that up clearly. Any help at all would be much appreciated.

Webcams are just not designed to get good video or audio from 25 yards away. They are designed to be used more like 25 inches away! From 25 yards away, the audio will be quiet and echo-ey, and the video will make the pastor look like a flyspeck (or, if you use digital zoom instead of optical zoom, like a checkerboard).

Assuming you already own a camcorder, the solution is to use a video capture device on your computer (such as a Pinnacle Dazzle -- see link below) and the A/V output cable from the camcorder. I'm going to assume that's what you are going to use in the instructions below...

Video: Put the camcorder on a tripod and zoom it in. Now (by using the camcorder's optical zoom) your pastor won't look like a flyspeck or a checkerboard, and the tripod will keep your audience from getting motion sickness. Connect the Dazzle's video input (yellow) to the camcorder's video output (also yellow).

Audio: Sound quality from the camcorder's built-in mic will be somewhat better than the webcam's built-in mic. But for better sound quality, you need an external mic (a shotgun mic would be best type), and still better would be a feed from the church sound system. If you are using the Dazzle unit below, your can tell the church A/V expert that the kind of feed you need is a line-level unbalanced RCA connection with a "y" adapter. Connect the Dazzle's audio inputs (red and white [sometimes red and black]) to either the camcorder's audio output (same colors) or to the church audio feed (whatever the church provides). I would also recommend using headphones to monitor the sound instead of the computer's speakers.

I want to record a church service using multiple cameras. Any ideas how can I can do this and software to use?

Basically, I want to use multiple cameras to record a church service, all connected to my Mac, and control it from here.
It's going to be a very low budget film.
I've heard of Premiere Pro, and have used a little bit of it.
But any other ideas?
How to connect the cameras to each other, if possible how to connect the church sound system?

forget the mac

you need PTZ cameras, these can be remotely aimed (Pan-tilt) and framed with the zoom. since you don't need to change all cameras at the same time, only one controller is needed.

next you need a video mixer. any of the Panasonic WJ-MX series will work. The WJ-MX50a is made for 4 cameras. These mixers also have audio so you can mix additional audio sources, such as the church PA. mixer also has a "preview" output so you can see how you are adjusting the camera before you "take" it on the program out.

finally, record live on a DVD-R recorder/player. that way you are ready to make copies even as the echos of the last song are fading away.

Our church just purchase a 2 projectors nice cameras and 2 macs. We are looking to record video, broadcast live. As of now we have wirecast 4 and was looking to use ProPresenter. I would like to know what all do I need or how do I setup for recording services and streaming them live. I know how to do that with wirecase. where I am lost is people would like to see what we are broadcasting on the projector which is not hard but it get hard when they would like to see song lyrics on the screen I would like to know do I need to get more gear or do I have what I need and how do I setup things to broadcast, record, display everything on projector, and use software to to display text or things from a different source.

Hi Stacey:

You need to just stop & talk to a local professional, or make use of the technical customer support help at Telestream (the Wirecast people), where your church probably spent around $1000 for their multi-camera webcast software. And for this discussion, you need to list what sort of cameras (model #'s and what outputs you plan to use) and what inputs or input cards your two Macs have. (Most churches use dedicated input cards for the cameras, like Blackmagic, Matrox, Osprey, etc.)

ProPresenter was mainly designed as a "lyrics over video" singalong worship software app. It is NOT designed as a multi-camera web-streaming app! That's what the Wirecast 4 is designed for.

You should consider the Mac running ProPresenter as just another "video source" to the 2nd Mac running Wirecast (just like the cameras).

When it comes to selecting different on-screen content for the local projectors (and not the same content that's streaming online), then you need video routers & video switcher hardware. This is where you need a professional technician or consultant to diagram the various signal flows and what hardware (video distribution amps --signal splitters-- and needed signal converters, etc.) to interface all the sources to the two separate destinations (on-screen and online).

Again, not knowing if your "nice cameras" are FireWire output or analog (or whatever) keeps this discussion limited in detail. It makes a big difference in determining what extra hardware is needed.

camera for recording/streaming church services?

Hi everyone, I hope you can help me. I'm looking for a camera that I could use to record/save to my pc/livestream church services. It will be about 70 ft away from the front of the church. I'm not looking for anything fancy, since this is the only camera we will have for now. And also I need something low budget. Thanks a lot
by low budget I meant, something way under $1000 closer to $500. if possible less. Isn't this Canon HV40 a cassette camera? Would it have a HD video?

Mmmj is right.

To answer your follow-up question, chances are VERY high yu will not find anything that will stream high definition video through USB. Not at the consumer, prosumer or pro level. That means HDMI, component (RGB) or AV plugging into a "Tricaster" box or something similar.

Yes, the Canon HV40 is miniDV tape based. The DV in miniDV = Digital Video. The zeroes and ones stored on digital tape are just as digital as the zeros and ones stored on flash memory, hard disc drive or even DVD. The format is different. The Canon HV40 records in high quality, low compression, high definition (1080i), video onto the digital tape in HDV format. Just because it is tape does not make it somehow "less digital"... Digital tape should not be confused with analog video onto VHS-C or Hi8 or other analog formats storing analog video.

The simplest way is to just point the video camera at the screen - it sounds crude but it does work pretty well.

The alternative is to buy a "scan converter" and a video switcher. The "scan converter" converts the VGA output from your computer to video. You would then need to switch from the camera to the scan converter depending on what you wanted to show in the nursery.

(Remember to take the video tape out of the camcorder when you are using it as only a camera - otherwise your camcorder may keep shutting down)

Anyone know of a board that can control multiple camcorders?

My church is about to purchase 3 camcorders to record services with. Our main problem is how to merge the 3 feeds. I know we need a controller board to do that with, but I don't even know what they're called. My only media training was on an old SEG board from the 80's. First, you need the camera equipment to film the service. Most any handheld digital camcorder will do - look for a miniDV unit.

Second, you need a very fast computer to hook the camera up to in order to process the video coming in.

Third, you need to find a host that will stream the video for you. Typically they charge by bandwidth used - some only charge by the amount of time. Time is much better than bandwidth! For live video, you also nee a HUGE upload speed - Verizon FiOS or other fiber optic solutino is your ONLY good solution. Cable and DSL will not be able to handle it. (Unless you get business class service with gauranteed upload speeds of 10Mbps or more).

Technically, you could host your own and stream it, but you would need:

Streaming software: Usually about $5-$10K US for the software
Extremely fast machine to stream it
Huge amount of bandwidth usage in your ISP contract

If you are a very large church, then doing it on your own may be cost efficient (will cost you maybe $1-$2k/month on your own). that's assuming a few hours a week of streaming and about 500-1000 users watching.

If you are a smaller church, then contracting out is the way to go. Search for hosted streaming services online. depending on your needs, may only cost a few hundred a month.

If you only plan on maybe 10 people or less ever tuning in at once, you can actually just record the video, convert it to a smaller size (optimize it for the web) and then post it online after wards. Can't do live broadcast this way though.

I was wondering about the firewire because the camera can only take 19 minute videos at a time and it always is a .MOV file and not a .AVI file (desired). Currently, we use a consumer-grade, single-CCD digital camcorder, but we will be getting a prosumer 3-CCD camcorder with XLR mic inputs. The sound board has XLR outputs. This would facilitate following "the_dude's" suggestion.

i also use Adobe Premiere Pro for editing so, i could record the audio right at the board and synch it on the PC later, which is "jimbob92065's" answer.

I would need to record the audio from six mics, a drum set and a Conga drum so, a shotgun mic wouldn't acomplish all that with the sound quality i'd need. thanks all for your answers...

There are a few ways to accomplish what you would like to do. However, without knowing the specifics of your board and your camera, it's a little difficult to offer advice.

I assume you're looking to get the audio onto the tape (or whatever media your camera uses) while you record the service?

That being the case, you can easily use any wireless transmitter and receiver (Shure manufacture great product, as does Samson) as long as you have compatible output from your board (1/4 TRS or XLR is most common) and feet it to the transmitter.

The receiver would need to connect to an audio input on your camera; without knowing what sort of camera you have, I can't tell you whether or not this is possible. If you have any sort of TRS input (most folks call this a "phono plug") you can purchase adapters to accomodate difference in size (most likely you'll have a 1/8" input if any)

If you have the neccessary inputs/outputs, you could even use a wireless guitar setup.

The other option you have is to record straight from the board and sync the audio with the video using relatively inexpensive software and your PC. This method will offer you the most flexibility, as you will be able to mix levels at your convenience, rather than "on the fly"

I want a webcam or video camera that will plug into a computer USB port and be able to record and broadcast live using upstream.tv. It will be used from the balcony of a church, about 25 yards from the pastor. Under $100 please. It needs to have good sound quality and good video quality. Webcams are just not designed to get good video or audio from 25 yards away. They are designed to be used more like 25 inches away! From 25 yards away, the audio will be quiet and echo-ey, and the video will make the pastor look like a flyspeck (or, if you use digital zoom instead of optical zoom, like a checkerboard).

Assuming you already own a camcorder, the solution is to use a video capture device on your computer (such as a Pinnacle Dazzle -- see link below) and the A/V output cable from the camcorder. I'm going to assume that's what you are going to use in the instructions below...

Video: Put the camcorder on a tripod and zoom it in. Now (by using the camcorder's optical zoom) your pastor won't look like a flyspeck or a checkerboard, and the tripod will keep your audience from getting motion sickness. Connect the Dazzle's video input (yellow) to the camcorder's video output (also yellow).

Audio: Sound quality from the camcorder's built-in mic will be somewhat better than the webcam's built-in mic. But for better sound quality, you need an external mic (a shotgun mic would be best type), and still better would be a feed from the church sound system. If you are using the Dazzle unit below, your can tell the church A/V expert that the kind of feed you need is a line-level unbalanced RCA connection with a "y" adapter. Connect the Dazzle's audio inputs (red and white [sometimes red and black]) to either the camcorder's audio output (same colors) or to the church audio feed (whatever the church provides). I would also recommend using headphones to monitor the sound instead of the computer's speakers.

So, assuming you already own a camcorder and tripod, your investment is the A/V capture unit below (list price $80 but street prices from about $50!) and some face time with the church AV person -- and your results will be superior to using a webcam. You will need internet access at the church, but I assume you know that. Good luck!

I am working with a magnavox dvd player/recorder mwr 10D6 and am using it to record church services by camera. After I finish recording the service on a blank dvdr disc, I remove it from the player and put it in my laptop afterwards, and I get a message saying the disc is blank (which is something I see as odd because it has video burned to it). The remote for this player has no finalize button. Does anyone know how to fix this?

If you wanna make a DVD that will work on a standard DVD player, you will need a DVD burning tool to do this. Just copy the movie to a DVD disc, it will actually not read by DVD players.

The best and most reliable DVD burning tool that I've ever used is a tool called DVD Creator. It's able to burn all kinds of videos to DVD disc. After that, you can view the DVD on DVD player. It also lets you edit videos and create DVD menus. Easy to use and professional.

It's going to be a very low budget film.

forget the mac

you need PTZ cameras, these can be remotely aimed (Pan-tilt) and framed with the zoom. since you don't need to change all cameras at the same time, only one controller is needed.

next you need a video mixer. any of the Panasonic WJ-MX series will work. The WJ-MX50a is made for 4 cameras. These mixers also have audio so you can mix additional audio sources, such as the church PA. mixer also has a "preview" output so you can see how you are adjusting the camera before you "take" it on the program out.

finally, record live on a DVD-R recorder/player. that way you are ready to make copies even as the echos of the last song are fading away.
