How do I choose a family camcorder (video camera)?

I don't know much about them and the info out there doesn't really break it down from the basics to the advanced. All I know is what they have at the local stores. How do I choose a good family video camera? Of course budget is a factor, but remove that and tell me what to look for/where to look/how to differentiate.

Answer
DVD camcorders are never a good choice! Since it's a family camcorder I'll make a couple of assumptions - you'll want to keep the video for a long time and it needs to be fairly robust. Look for an entry level MiniDV camcorder - they record to tapes which can be kept for years and, while you can't use them as footballs, they're able to stand some rough treatment. Don't get too hung up on the specs - get something that feels right, with the controls where you expect to find them, and that's within your budget. Don't bother about how much optical zoom a camcorder's got - they're all adequate, and ignore digital zoom completely. I'd avoid camcorders with touch screen controls (sticky fingers!) and look for something with a viewfinder so it's easier to use in bright sunlight.

You'll see a lot of (usually cheap) camcorders that record to memory cards. These are great for recording a few minutes of the kids playing and then watching the results straight away - they're not so good for the long term, though.

90% of the video that's shot is crap! That's not me being snotty, it's a law of nature (you should see MY 90%)! If you want something that people will watch more than once you'll need to edit it. You'll need to capture the video via firewire - if your PC hasn't already got one you'll need to install a firewire card. They're cheap, easy to install and readily available. You'll also need a firewire cable. You can then edit the video using Windows Movie Maker.

what movie is it where a kid is in his van with his buddies and he has this old film style camera?

James Harr

Seems like an early 80s, but not a typical cheesy 80s movie. These group of kids are in an old brown van I think, seems like they are about to go on an adventure. seems like they were in a big park like with mountains and stuff. This kid gets out his video camera that uses film to record. He might have gotten it from a pawn shop, but all this is at the start of the movie... Anyone ?

Answer
The only thing that comes to mind is "Wild America" (1997).

What kind of digital camera should I get?

best camera for video recording 2012
on Best Camera for Video Recording: 2013-08-04
best camera for video recording 2012 image

Anonymous.

I have a 2009 panosonic lumix (digital not HD - forget type though), but it's kind of broken because the lens won't open fully. I think it's time to get a new camera since I haven't gotten one since early 2010. I plan to be a photographer in the future (as a side job). I am also going to work at a camp and plan to take pictures there. I don't feel like bringing my big EOS digital 2008 cannon. Here's what I'm looking for:

1. Price range no more than $250. I would prefer less than $200, but if it would really suite me, then I'd go for it.
2. I'm not quite sure what I like. I know there's no such thing as a total all around digital point and shoot because I've been doing some research. I'd probably be doing photo shoots, but I also want one that would take like pictures of people doing sports since I'm in the horse world and like to take pictures of people horse riding and stuff. I guess I'd mainly focus on pets and kids and stuff.
3. I know optical zoom. I have photoshop CS5, so I don't need the pixels taken up like that.
4. I don't need a video recording. Would be nice, but eh I'd rather save my money and just use my phone or something.
5. I have a 2010 mac book pro laptop, so I'd like the card to be able to read/format on that.
6. If I print out images, it doesn't need to be more than 8X10 photo paper printed pictures. I mean I'd use my bigger camera for larger photos, so yeah. I'll probably just post the pictures online/email them if anything so won't need them really printed big.
7. I'd like to have a camera that has a decent battery life. At camp, the power went out for 8 days last year. I was able to take pictures the whole time and took over 300 pictures and still had battery life. I wouldn't mind having a long battery life like that camera.
8. My hand does shake a tad sometimes, so I'd prefer a not SOOO sensitive camera.
9. I'd like a camera that has the ability for manual settings and as well as auto or/and preset settings.
10. I'd prefer like Cannon, Nikon, Panasonic (nicer brands rather than the not so trustworthy brands because I know how to use those types of cameras).

Which camera(s) do you think would best suite me?

Answer
http://keerok-photography.blogspot.com/2012/09/cannon-is-weapon.html

1. Price is right smack in your budget.
2. Zoom is enough on this camera for taking horses and their riders. This is also good for shots of pets, kids and stuff which are near you or relatively out of reach. Just remember to shoot under lots of light. Indoors, use flash.
3. Optical zoom is not extravagant but not wanting either. Don't worry. What it lacks in zoom, it makes up with optical quality.
4. This has HD video which you can completely ignore until you find a lustful desire for it later.
5. As a standard feature, all cameras follow the FAT filesystem. With memory cards 4GB and larger, FAT32 is imposed. Mac computers can recognize FAT/FAT32 without problems. You can even format the memory card to FAT/FAT32 using your Mac (no matter how many pro photographers advice you not to). It will work.
6. This is a 16MP camera. You can print to 11x16" as long as exposure quality is gloriously good enough.
7. Four AA batteries. The best would be Energizer Lithium but you can also get rechargeable Ni-MH. Just make sure they're at least 2100 mAh for very long lasting shooting. In the event you run out, just slide over to the nearest store for some Alkaline AA's. That's the beauty of it.
8. Oh, this camera's sensitive. Apart from excellent optical glass quality, it has a triple-shake-reduction technology so don't worry about shaky hands. You're covered on that one.
9. Manual exposure? Manual focus? No problem. It's not as intuitive as a dSLR. This is after all just a bridge but, if you want manual, this has manual.
10. Since you can't spell Canon correctly, I'll take it you don't know that this brand is older than them and just a tad younger than Nikon. There was a time in fact when all cameras sold by all other brands (nice and not so trustworthy) were lesser than that sold by this brand alone. So there.

What is a good hd video camera for a good price?

Blake

I want a good 1080p hd video camera for a good price. I was thinking around the 250$-300$ range. I don't know if it is possible but if any one knows of any good deals let me know.
Thanks

Answer
Canon PowerShot A1300 16.0 MP Digital Camera with 5x Digital Image Stabilized Zoom 28mm Wide-Angle Lens with 720p HD Video Recording Great camera for the price. Purchased the camera in May 2012 to shoot family events, friends ect. You could not ask for a better price vs performance camera. Very simple to use, excellent picture and video quality. I would suggest getting a cushioned camera case that includes the USB thumb drive reader for $10, the case is perfect for travel and storage when not in use. The USB reader is a great option when offloading the memory card.

Do you know any good recording equipment for piano performances?

best video camera for recording piano image

Faerie

I'm a pianist and I need to record a video of my playing to apply for a scholarship. My church has a beautiful, massive Steinway Grand piano, the biggest one available. I would love to use it, but my family only owns home video cameras. Where could I find the proper equipment to make a good recording? Is it possible to hook a mic up to the inside of the piano? If so, how? Do you have any other ideas?

Answer
The best thing you can possibly do is to find a good audio person to record your performance. It will cost you a lot less than buying all the equipment you need. Once you have a recording you can make a video and you will use the audio track from that recording session. Try Craigslist to find an audio person that can record for you. They will come with mics and recorders. You can easily spend over $1,000 on some recording equipment and then you still don't know how to use it.

What cameras are good for recording youtube cover videos?

best bridge camera for video recording image

Chinieberr

I'm a singer and I'll be posting some acoustic and instrumental videos of my singing on youtube. I just really need a good camera. I was thinking about a Cannon but I don't know which one would be best for recording vocals. I have a budget of about $150. Please help, I'm looking for a decently priced camera with a good microphone on the video camera. Thanks.

Answer
Hmmm.. You might not get much with $150. I thought so, until I started looking more into good cameras. I went from looking at a $150 camera, to a $400 camera, and now I'm saving up for a $800 DSLR that has FANTASTIC quality and you are able to attach the good quality microphones you need to get great sound. Just in case you're curious, I'll show you which cameras I was looking at, all of which are great cameras!

1.) Canon PowerShot SX130 IS - $150. This is a GREAT camera for the price. I believe if you are really on a budget and don't feel like saving up, then you should definitely get THIS camera! No other! This camera. It has great picture quality and HD video. The microphone is pretty good too. So this would be the camera if you are on this budget.

2.) Canon PowerShot SX40 HS - $400. This camera is called a bridge camera (better than a Point-And-Shoot, but not the level of a DSLR). It can take great pictures similar to a DSLR (which is the cameras professionals use). The video is HD and GREAT, and better than the Canon PowerShot SX130 IS that I listed above. It is also a superzoom camera. It has the look of a DSLR also. It's a great camera!

3.) Canon EOS Rebel T3i - $800. This is the camera I'm now saving up for. It's a DSLR. It's just amazing. It shoots spectacular video. Of course it can take great pictures because it's a DSLR. Lol. But, this camera his this just perfect. Lol, for me it is anyways. But again, I'm quite serious about it, so I mean yeah.

You can check out the Canon Vixia camcorders if you just want a camera for shooting video. I don't know how much they run but probably not too much. Probably a little over your budget. But if you want a simple all around camera for pictures and video, and you are on this strict budget of $150, I strongly recommend the Canon PowerShot SX130 Is. The upgrade version is Canon PowerShot Sx150 IS, but it's probably $20 more.

Good luck! I hope you find what you want! :)

Which camera is better Sony Cyber shot HX1 or Canon Powershot SX20 IS ?

Laith A

Hello
Im thinking of buying one of above bridge cameras . Both have good specifications and quality ,thus i could not make a comparison between them. Any idea make me grate full .

Answer
Neither camera is perfect...but after reading a review for the HX 1...I definitely wouldn't buy one, because it's image quality is NOT up to scratch.

DPreview gives it a 7.5/10 for image quality...not good enough in my book. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydschx1/page16.asp

I prefer Canon, but that doesn't mean the SX20 IS is a great camera. Yeah it records HD video and has 20x optical zoom, but it's 12.1MP is probably it's downfall. Too many MP on a small sensor is not good. But, if you avoid using higher ISO's (low light shooting, for instance), this camera might be the better choice.

What is the best video size (like 4x4) to upload to movie maker?

Aqua

Answer
Normally, you upload the size that came from the camera. Be sure if it's HD widescreen that you change Movie Maker's aspect ratio to 16:9. In the XP and Vista WMM, go to Tools>Options>Advanced tab. For Windows Live Movie Maker, see the link below for a good screenshot of where Aspect Ratio is.
http://www2.palomar.edu/pages/atrc/2011/05/27/windows-live-movie-maker-video-aspect-ratio/

The Canon EOS T2i (550D) is an excellent camera. You have a lot to learn about using it but the quality of your photos and videos will be excellent so it will be worth it.

Many thanks for the Best Answer but now I can't reply to your other question so I'll have to do it here.

Your camera can output 4 different kinds of Videos: Full HD (1080p widescreen), HD Lite widescreen (720p), 640X480 @ 60/50 fps and good old Standard MOV files (which are also 4:3). If you just set the mode to Video, you're taking Standard MOV videos.

Whenever you change the video recording mode, you have to make a note of what it's been changed to so you can use the appropriate aspect ratio when you edit and you can pick the right size Save Movie option.

This review of your camera's video capabilities is a tad technical but the only file format that's produced seems to be MOV (MPEG4) files. At least they are encoded with H264 which gives them very good quality.
http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon_EOS_550D_Rebel_T2i/movie_mode.shtml

This lays it all out:
Format
Resolution Codec Frame Rate
1920 x 1080MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 24p
1920 x 1080MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 30p
1280 x 720MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 60p
640 x 480 MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 60p

If, for some reason, your videos won't import to Movie Maker, try this little experiment that works for my MTS files which are also encoded with H264:
right click on one of the MOV files and click on Copy. Go to the Desktop, right click and "Paste". Now, right click on the file that's on the Desktop and click on "Rename". Change just the file extension, the last three letters - the MOV - to AVI and press Enter. A warning able the renamed file being unstable will appear. Click Yes/OK - you want to rename the file. Now, see if this renamed file will import into Movie Maker. Mine do. If they don't import, you'll have to convert them.

Turn on your camera. Put in into video mode. Press the Menu button and scroll through the options until you get to the recording mode. Press OK and make a note of what mode you're recording in. Click my avatar and email that information to me - along with what version of Movie Maker you're using and whether or not you can import the MOV files into Movie Maker.

And, yes, I know how confusing and brain exploding all this is right now but very soon, after you get used to it, it won't seem bad at all.

is it legal for a teacher to record a class to keep track of the happenings and get a student into trouble?

Q. a teacher at my school is recording my class so she can keep track of who is doing work and who isn't... she is then going to use the videos to get people into trouble for not working? is it not true that you have to have permission from at least parents in order to do that? personally i dont think what she is doing is right. and if its not right i want back up and proof that it is wrong and take it to her. can anyone help me to find where i can find information on the matter?

Answer
Is it legal? I think it depends on the state and the circumstances.

I know in NY we are not allowed to film a classroom for any reason without ALL of the parents permission.

Security cameras in the hallway are a totally different story legally speaking.

I would speak to the principal about it, if she is doing it with the principal's permission chances are it is legal (principals are usually the most scared of law suits).

If you're willing to spend the money, get a POV camera, strap that baby on to your helmet and when the shit hits the fan... hit record and get some!!

http://www.vio-pov.com/

Go and purchase a BIG flash card, and believe me they make BIG ones but once again you're going to have to pay some decent money! You may also want to look into a solar panel charger to charge the batteries when out in the field, you can find those rather cheap!

I need to know how to edit a video clip I recorded with my video camera. It is too dark to see my baby's face

My bf and I were video taping the baby with a combo video camera/mp3/digital camera and got the cutest video ever, but it came out so dark you can't see the baby's face. I need to know how to edit it so you can see the baby. I tried paint shop pro, but it won't let me upload the video, any ideas?

Making exposure corrections on videos is done using professional equipment and software ... in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Unfortunately you will need to re-shoot with better lighting.

Well i've had this question for a while, and the reason for what I want to make an infrarred camera, it sounds pervert, yet it would be fun, the reason is to see through people's clothes.
So.. Please can someone tell me the steps & the materials?
Atm i have a Sony digital camera, which can video record or take a photo.

Answer
you have a slight misconception. all cameras work with light, and generally that is the light that is reflected off the subject. IR cameras are identical, excpet the light source is an IR illuminator instead of an ordinary lightbulb. So they don't see through clothing, they see the IR reflected off clothing..... IR cameras are useful in situation where you don't want the light source to be visible to the subject, like for surveillence cameras. CCDs are sensitive to IR just as they are to light. digital cameras use an IR blocking filter in order to prevent false color in normal pictures. To see IR only, the blocking filter has to be removed and a low-pass light blocking filter added. A body does not generate enough IR content to make an image in the camera, for that you need a FLIR camera, and again you won't see through clothing, but you will see temperature bands which allows a person's outline to be differentiated against a cool background.

What is the best camera to use for photography and video recording at concerts?

Lexie

I really want to buy a camera that's really good for taking pictures at concerts, (probably outside) and recording. I have some FujiFilm 14 mega pixels camera now, but I mean I want a REALLY nice camera. I was looking into Nikon and Canon cameras but I don't know which one would be good for video recording too. I'm not really too concerned about the price, but under 4,000 would be cool!

Answer
First of all, you may not be allowed to bring a camera into the venue, I'd check first.
You might get away with smuggling it in, but personally I hate the possibility that I might either have my camera confiscated, or I won't be allowed inside.
Next problem is that concerts are a low light situation, usually also coupled with much movement as well as a fair distance from the subject.

All up, that makes it EXTREMELY challenging. The only hope of half decent concert photos are good DSLR cameras and even for those you need very good and very FAST lenses.

Small P&S cameras have tiny little sensors, so they don't do well with low light situations.
Concert photos are often blurry because there isn't enough light, so the shutter speed is too slow to hand-hold it, even worse when you add the movement of the performers to it.

You could try raising your ISO, but that will add noise to your photos.
You could try using your little flash, but it can't reach very far, and won't do you a whole lot of good other than lighting up the back of the heads directly in front of you.

I'm afraid there are a number of good reasons why the pro's carry around huge, expensive cameras, lenses, and lights.
It would be lovely if a tiny camera could do it all, but the reality is that small P&S's just can't handle concert situations very well. Some places do allow small P&S cameras (but no DSLRs). The reason for that is because they KNOW you will never get any decent shot with a little P&S.

However, I do realize that some of us a lot easier to please than others, so perhaps what is totally unacceptable to me might be fine in YOUR eyes.
If you can't have a good camera with you, at the very least make sure you learn how to you use what you have, so you can make the most out of it. Read your manual several times, attend a class, read some books on photography - it will help a lot.
If you're not interested in learning much, at the very least learn how to turn off the flash. Those tiny on-camera flashes only reach a few feet, so all you do with it is illuminate the bodies in front of you.

As to sound - there is a good reason why the audio pros carry around a lot of very big and very expensive gear. Even a good camcorder can only do so much in that regard - let alone a little P&S still camera! Don't expect miracles - don't even expect anything you'd ever want to listen to again.

how good is the quality of a video recorded from photo digital cameras?

PATUK R

how good is the quality of a video recorded from photo digital cameras?.. let´s say compared to a standard 8mm video camera or similar

Answer
The 'video' from a digital camera can be very good (depending on which brand and how heavily the video is compressed).
Canon make some of the best quality 'video' available. You just need to make sure the camera can record video at 640X480 at 30fps. (you can have smaller video at 320X240 at 60fps).

But of course the video from a digital handycam will always be better.

I'm looking into getting a flip video camera to record a mission trip and band camp.

two questions:
1. can i expand the memory so that it records longer than 60 minutes? (or 120, depending on which model i get)
2. how do i charge the battery? can i take it out, or do i have to plug a cable in?

Answer
1. no you can no expand the memory but after you load the and save the vids on to your computer you can delete them from your flip and record more vids.

2. you dont charge the flip you use 2 AA batteries and the last pretty long depending on how often you use it.

also once you load the vids onto your computer you can edit things out of each vid and then you can combine thevids to make a movie and you can add music to your vids.

here is an example of some vids from the flip that i made.

Answer
Actually, your image in the mirror is seen in reverse. That is the way you see yourself most often and the way you think you look. The still photo or video is the way you do look. The video recording contains the most information and would be the most telling.

Answer
P&S cameras (actually all camera lenses) have a minimum focal distance. For example the Samsung SL600 is 31.5" on normal and 39.4" on telephoto.

You would need to look up the specs for your particular model.

I have recorded a long 10 minute video on my 12MP bridge camera. i would like to know how do i convert it so that i can easily upload it on Youtube?

to which format for Youtube? and what (free) software do i need to use in converting it?

Thanks.

Answer
YouTube accepts a wide range of video file formats.
Here's a list of some well-known formats that YouTube supports:
.WebM files - Vp8 video codec and Vorbis Audio codecs
.MPEG4, 3GPP and MOV files - Typically supporting h264, mpeg4 video codecs, and AAC audio codec
.AVI - Many cameras output this format - typically the video codec is MJPEG and audio is PCM
.MPEGPS - Typically supporting MPEG2 video codec and MP2 audio
.WMV
.FLV - Adobe-FLV1 video codec, MP3 audio

Popular is FLV format. So you can convert to FLV for upload to YouTube. If you need a converter,Enolsoft Video Converter can help you.Not noly can convert to FLV, and convert between all common video formats.

I have a video camera with one long video on it. How do I seperate a part of this video from the rest?

Matt

I want to put a Halo 3 movie on Youtube. I've recorded the video on my video camera but I had to record it about 53 minutes into the tape because a family video took up the first 50 minutes of the tape. Do you have any suggestions on how I can take a section of the video and put it on Youtube? If I need software please tell me what software I need.

Answer
If you recorded 103 minutes of video on a camcorder tape, this is not a miniDV tape based camcorder - it sounds like it is a full sized VHS analog camcorder so there will not be any digital connections.

How would you normally connect the camcorder to a computer? If this has not been done, and my assumption in the first paragraph is correct, then you need to get an analog/digital bridge like
http://pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Dazzle/Family.htm
Connect the camcorder to the A/D bridge with the AV cables that came with the camcorder, then connect the A/D bridge to the computer... and follow the instructions that come with the A/D bridge.

I go to a lot of concerts and record them on camera. I was wondering which cameras allow zooming during video recording. I'm looking for something not too expensive. $300-400 max price. Thanks.

Answer
I have a Samsung L200 and it's great. 10 megapixels, zooming while video and its only 200.

If you're doing a lot of video, invest the money for the Canon HG20. $600 from amazon.com, i have one, trust me, its the way to go.

Just want a good mic for my camera for a good price. I upload piano videos to Youtube, but the sound isn't good. I have Windows Movie Maker if that helps. A good answer would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Answer
You don't say what sort of camera you have. I'm assuming it's a point & shoot digital camera since you're in this forum and p&s camera audio quality is normally pretty wretched.

Most P&S cameras have microphone and sample rate limitations which make audio sound bad. You need to record the audio on something better. Your computer can be set up to record audio if you use a microphone (Radio Shack has decent cheapo mics). Depending on your computer's sound circuitry, you may need an external preamplifier between the mic and the computer audio input or an external USB audio gadget to get rid of electrical noise generated by your computer.

You can use Audacity as your sound editor which will enable you to record your music to your computer. Audacity is free and works quite well.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

In Movie Maker, get rid of the crappy sound track from your camera's video and use the sound track that you recorded to your computer. Align the new sound track with your video. You can align the audio track laying in the new audio track and align it with the camera's audio track until the echo is gone. Then, mute the camera audio track and render your video making sure that you select a decent audio quality for the render process.

Better yet, if you have a DV camcorder, use that. Camcorder audio quality is generally pretty good.

BTW, the audio on youtube is sub-par. Youtube will take audio and resample it to a low bit rate. Don't expect something wonderful out of youtube. If you're trying to wow someone, put up your video on your own web site with properly encoded audio bit rate (44.1 kHz sample rate, 192kb/s or greater bit rate). I prefer using Flash .flv format for on-line videos as it is well supported by most browsers. Any other video format is a compatibility nightmare for on-line viewing. Riva can convert your video project to a Flash video. There are a few Flash player options for your web site. JW Media Player or FlowPlayer. I prefer JW player as FlowPlayer has gotten too complicated.

Are you excited about the new Apple iPad? Will you be getting one as soon as they're available?

Einstein

I must say that if I was a book reader I would definitely pay the extra cash for this device over the Kindle. But, I am surprised at the amount of "disappointment" the new iPad has caused all over internet forums from the geek community.
As far as the price goes, I must say that that's a thing the iPad has going for itself. I was expecting something starting at $700.00 and up.
Are you going to stand in line to get one?

Answer
I am definitely going to get one. I like iBook and iWork features and I also love that it can be connected to digital camera directly and import pictures.I am sure it will have some breathtaking photo editing apps.

My only concern is how would i save the document that I create on iPad and how will i be able to download the email attachment. But I am sure these things must have been taken care of.

There are disappointment because of the hype created by rumors. I remember when in 2007 iPhone was launched, it lacked very common feature like video camera, MMS, copy/paste and atleast a 3 MP camera. But regardless, it sold incredibly well because whatever it did, did amazingly.
Apple is not liked for its feature its admired for its ease of use and thats why Apple is loved only by people who use its products. People who don't use never like Apple because their mind cant see beyond features they cant think of performance.

Many people just see the commercial that iPhone cant do multi tasking and then start bragging about it but the fact is iPhone does multi tasking to a very large extent. For example you can listen to FLYCAST radio and creat a word document at the same time. You can run Voice Recording with other apps. You can run iPod with many other apps.

If you are chatting on Ping and get a message on Yahoo Messenger, you are immediately notified. Push notification is way better than running many apps at the same time. If you are FaceBook and an important news breaks, you are notified.

I am sure even with not so good initial response, iPad will rock just like iPhone did.
