Answer
Best Buy online has a bunch on sale right now in the $100 range that record straight to flash memory.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcat17080&type=page&qp=crootcategoryid%23%23-1%23%23-1~~q70726f63657373696e6774696d653a3e313930302d30312d3031~~cabcat0400000%23%230%23%23dh~~cabcat0403000%23%230%23%231j~~nf408%7C%7C243530202d202439392e3939&list=y&nrp=15&sc=abCameraCamcorderSP&sp=%2Bbrand+skuid&usc=abcat0400000

The other way to go is to use a webcam and capture straight from youtube (but this usually looks pretty jittery if you are making fast movements).

What's the best point and shoot camera for video recording? Cash limit is $200. Thanks!

Answer
one of the better products in this price range is the Casio Exilim EX-Z80... it has a youtube capture (640x480 @30fps) ...it also records in a higher Wide VGA (848 x 480 @ 30 fps), perfect for watching video on a widescreen monitor or TV. and it records to the H.264/AVC AAC, MOV format... which will allow the video to be transfered to Apple multimedia devices directly without being re-encoded. There are a number of cameras that record video to other formats...such as MJPEG and Quicktime...but the audio portion is usually WAV... and that audio format uses up more space and conversion is needed when watching on PMP devices. Its currently on sale at B&H for $140. This camera is also not a slacker when it comes to other features , face detection, and image quality. Another nice unique feature for video fans is a dedicated Movie button. No need to dig though screen menus and you can go from shutter button to movie button instantly!
Good Luck and happy shooting

My bf plays for a band and I record with my kodak zd15. The sound sucks really bad. I need a nice camera that video records and has good audio for live band performance. I looked into the Mino HD 8GB Flip, I really liked the upload your own photo thing but it has a lot of downs.
Is the cannon sd1000 a better choice?
I need help.

Answer
Consumer-grade camcorders don’t record audio very well especially music. Most have omni-directional microphones that tend to pick up all sound around the cam, like sound bouncing off walls, etc. And some are not even stereo mics. If your Kodak ZD15 is okay with the video imagery, then use a separate audio recorder which is the best way to record for music video projects. You did not state your budget but something like a Zoom H1 digital recorder ($99.00) and used with a quality microphone is the cheapest option. But better yet, something like the Zoom H4n or Tascam DR100 (both around $290.00). They can use two mics (and the two on-board mics) and the ability to balance up to 4 channels. The important part is the microphone and for a way to adjust the gain, as music will peak and fall throughout the performance, and each instrument has its own unique sound waves. Using ear-muff style headphones will allow you to listen more accurately what the mic(s) is picking up. You may be able to rent a recorder and try it out to see if it will work for you. Check with your local music instrument stores. If you still are leaning towards another camcorder, just make sure it has an external microphone port and headphone port.

What Digital Cameras Can Allow Zooming During Video Recording?

I go to a lot of concerts and record them on camera. I was wondering which cameras allow zooming during video recording. I'm looking for something not too expensive. $300-400 max price. Thanks.

Answer
I have a Samsung L200 and it's great. 10 megapixels, zooming while video and its only 200.

If you're doing a lot of video, invest the money for the Canon HG20. $600 from amazon.com, i have one, trust me, its the way to go.

What's the process of recording a guitar cover to youtube?

Timothy O

I'm looking to record some guitar cover videos to Youtube with a camera and an interface but I don't know how I'm supposed to do it (like, to get the songs, video and the recorded guitar done at the same time and then sync them up, etc.). I have Audacity btw.

Answer
Well, do you already have a youtube account? Then its easy! You take a video camera, record yourself playing guitar, and then you can add the song on top. I have done it many times! What I do is this, I either turn on my CD player, turn on the video camera and then play my guitar, so I get all three together at once. Another way I have experimented with is recording the guitar part with a video camera, and then on wavepad sound editor, I mix it with the song, which seems to sound a whole lot better!
Here is an example of what it sounds like if you record all three together at once:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEZY-miyOWM&feature=channel_page

Here is my example of recording the guitar part with a video camera and then mixing it with the song on wavepad sound editor:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldMEWdx1Jns&feature=channel_page

After you edit it all and what not, you go to youtube.com, click my videos, then upload new video and then browse, find your video then click upload, then write a description, a full 4 minute length song takes around an hour or so to upload to the site, from there you can share your videos!
Have fun!

Hope this helps, Indy :)

Answer
Get a camera with a microphone input. Then go get one of these http://www.asimplelife.ca/mixer.html and hook it to the mic input on your camera, that way you have control of the volumes of 4 microphones. If you cannot use mics(going to a concert) you are out of luck, any video shot at a concert, unless the crowd is deathly still, never works, audio is unusable

Answer
Any DSLR would be good and will take photos like those. The D3100 is a great entry-level camera and is capable of shooting excellent quality clear and crisp shots. I'd say go with it and invest in some good lenses because that's what matters more. I suggest you read this user review to help you in making a decision:

http://www.amazon.com/review/RQMA3E4E109LS/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B003ZYF3LO&nodeID=&linkCode=&sourceid=md.ds&tag=famavca-20

You can get a good deal for it on here:

http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-D3100-Digital-18-55mm-3-5-5-6/dp/B003ZYF3LO/ref=cm_rdp_product&sourceid=md.ds&tag=famavca-20

And since you seem to be interested in taking portraits mainly, the lens i'd suggest for you is this one:

http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-50mm-1-4G-Digital-Cameras/dp/B001GCVA0U/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1321074288&sr=1-1&sourceid=md.ds&tag=famavca-20

And the best most inexpensive travel lens is this one:

Answer
forget getting an SLR, those use 35mm film and are not capable of shooting video, period. the dSLR would be an option.

What made that a good picture was careful selection of the background and the elimination of shadows by using a light diffuser. neither of these are a function of the camera or photoshop. it is mostly smart planning on the part of the photographer, someone who knows the craft.

if you want to get photos like this, then you need to study. most community colleges offer photography production courses. enroll or at least pick up the textbook at the bookstore and read it.

I'm in a rock band, and we would like to record us playing, so we can put it on youtube. We are looking for a VIDEO camera that can shoot good videos, but we want better sound quality. Budget is $200 or less. This, or a camera that has a "USB IN" thing so that i can plug a rockband mic into it

Answer
To get the very best sound quality for a music video, you should ALWAYS record the video and the music separately. Then merge and synchronize the music using a good audio/video editor and sequencer like Pro Tools.

But, if you insist on recording them together, you need to have a digital video camcorder that has an external microphone input so that you can plug in your own studio quality microphone. Better still is to have more than one microphone running through a mic preamp that feeds into the camcorder. The music should also be balanced correctly by running the entire band through a mixer and then recording the audio off of the mixer in stereo to the camcorder.

If your music is too loud, it's going to sound bad anyway. You can turn down the music and it not only sounds better, the people listening to won't have to shout at each other to comment on it and the musicians won't go deaf at an early age from damaging their ears with a constant barrage of excessive decibels. http://www.abelard.org/hear/hear.php#loud-music

you must have a good camcorder with mic input to refrain from thees problem because it will help you to add a external mic & grab very good sound. if you can try Sony HDR-cx430v/ HDR-CX160 or you are looking more cheaper camera go to Panasonic GS25 but you can't buy brand new one because its not manufacturing any more but trust me its a good & reliable one..

What is a good compact camera for recording high-volume, high-definition audio/video?

S3NT13NT_G

Hello everybody. Here is the problem I'm having:

I am an enthusiastic concert attendee, and I go to a lot of Metal shows. I also like to record parts of the shows I go to, so I can go back and re-live the experience later. But these shows are LOUD! Around 115-130 decibels, to be more specific. And at that kind of high volume, most camera microphones are overloaded and the resulting videos have sound that is distorted, scratchy, and unlistenable.

What I have tried already:

I have owned a Fujifilm JV-100 in the past, and I currently own a Canon SX-260 HS and neither of these have decent audio. My fiancée's old Sony Cybershot DSC-W50, on the other hand, has great sound quality. The only issue with that is that it's ancient, shoots poor quality photos, and doesn't have full-HD video capability. I'm also not sure if the newer models of Sony Cybershots have the same quality of internal microphone and when I asked a sales representative about this and she was unable to give me an answer.

Limitations:

Using an actual camcorder is out of the question, as is buying an expensive digital SLR. It must be a compact, point-and-shoot camera because otherwise the event staff/venue security deem it a "professional device" and will not allow it inside the concert venues without a press pass, which I obviously do not have. I also cannot use a separate audio recording device, because it is impractical and I need the convenience of all the components (camera, video recorder, audio recorder) in one single device.

What I need:

Simply put, I need a compact, point-and-shoot camera that is capable of shooting in low-light settings, that is capable of recording HD video, and has an internal microphone that doesn't fuzz out at high volumes. I also need it on a budget, which is less than $400.

Please offer me some suggestions for what model camera I should look into buying. I'm tired of wasting my money on cameras that don't work under the rigorous conditions I have described. If there are other metalheads out there who've had the same problem, I'd really appreciate it if you could give me your recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Answer
Lovely question mate. Okay, for me, the best DSLR camera for video is definitely Canon 550D or Kiss X4 or T2i whatever they call it. I love it for its value for the money. It has all the right features I need to capture great videos. The grip is comfortable, it records progressive videos (interlaced video like old Sony Alpha cameras are a nightmare), great prime lens options, full manual control over the exposure and has ample resolution options and frame rates such as these:
- Full HD : 1920x1080p: 30/24 fps (NTSC), 25/24 fps (PAL)
- HD : 1280x720p (HD): 60 fps (NTSC), 50 fps (PAL)
- VGA : 640x480 (SD): 60 fps (NTSC), 50 fps (PAL)

Notice I said prime lenses? It means that the aperture size is constant along the focal length. Zoom lenses change their aperture value when zoomed in or out. The kit lens, 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, is strange. Let's say you lock exposure at 1/100 shutter speed and f/3.5 when the lens is zoomed out to 18mm. Then during recording you zoom in to 55mm. At this length the lens can only provide you with f/5.6 and then the video mysteriously gets darker. To overcome this I rarely zoom in or out during recording, and I use fixed aperture lenses like a 200mm f/2.8 prime, 50mm f/1.8 prime and some more primes.

My recommendation, get a Canon 550D and then spend more on prime lenses. Oh, don't forget to get a tripod or a steadicam for non shaky videos. Have a good time making movies!

Handheld camera for live gigs?

Looking for a handheld camera for recording video and sound for live gigs, a good example of what results I'm looking for is the quality of this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxjXMpMmRiQ

Answer
for video quality... this will depend on the lighting...
Luckily for that sample you provided, the lighting guy really knew what he was doing and lit the stage very well. Not every performance will be like that.
Camera suggestions could be any digital camera. Heck, a common iphone could have recorded that with similar video quality.

For audio quality... ... you'll need a camera that will support a mic input.

Best suggestion:
Canon G12

- features a tilt screen so you can hold the camera high and still see the stage while looking at the screen
- has a hot shoe to put a microphone
- mic imput jack

I really like that camera but i really expensive!! I can't spend $900 right now on a camera.

I'm taking photography/videography classes in college, and i like that the 500d had HD video recording, but like i said, money is a little tight.

What other Canon EOS DSLR/SLR camera would be really comparable to it? The main things i'm looking for in a camera are:

Video Quality/Length
Live view
ISO
Shutter Speed
Aperture

Answer
The only other Canon camera that has video is a the 5D MKII which costs about 3x as much.

All the other new Canon Rebels have everything but video. The older Rebel XT and XTi don't have live view.

The same is true with Nikon and Pentax. The Nikon D5000 costs the same as the Rebel T1i and the Pentax K7 costs about $1,400.

Here are all the DSLR's that shoot video

Canon Rebel T1i $850
Nikon D5000 $850
Canon 5D MKII $2,700 body only
Nikon D90 $900 body only
Nikon D300s $1,800 body only (available shortly)
Pentax K7 $1,400

New baby coming soon looking for a camera that takes good action shots?

Brittany

My husband and I are expecting our first baby in Feb. and we want a camera to capture all of our memories. I want to buy a new camera for this, but do not know of any cameras that take good action shots for a relatively low price (under $300). Can anyone tell me of a camera that takes good action shots?

Answer
Congrats on the baby. Capturing babies and young children is one of the more difficult task. They are always in motion, and for babies, they are typically indoors where the light strenth is weak. The typical answer is to get a DSLR however your price restriction would rule out this option. If you can find a bit more funding, say around $400, I would recommend that you consider getting a used DSLR with a kit lens. Any DSLR would be able to focus quickly and accurately to freeze the motion of your baby. The typical shutter speed to freeze motion is 1/400th sec. However, you can freeze motion by using the onboard flash and shoot at a slower shutter speed.

If your budget is fixed at $300 or below, I would recommend the Panasonic ZS3 (TZ7, another name for it). This is an excellent all-around Digital P&S. It has a fast auto-focus for this type of camera, the zoom range is awesome so you can focus close and far, it is small and will fit into your purse or coat jacket, on top of that it can also record HD videos.

Very similar to the Panasonic ZS3 are the Canon SX200 IS and the Sony H20.

You may try vendors such as Costco or any big-box that will have a generous return policy and try it to see if you can develop a technique to shoot effectively with

Be sure to budget for a fast memory card. If you decide to go with the Panasonic or something equivalent, be sure to get an SDHC type 6 card with at least 4 GB of capacity.

Lastly, I suggest that you peruse www.depreview.com and check out their camera database. These three cameras I mentioned above were evaluated by the staff at dpreview.com last year as part of the big comparison.

If you decide to go with the DSLR route, the forums there will provide plenty of information and very "lively" discussion on your camera choice.

A very reputable source for used cameras is www.keh.com. They are upgrading their website and it is very unstable but their phone still works.

my dslr camera records videos for only 3 sec. How do i make the duration longer?

Rose amor

I have a 60D EOS camera. I seldom record videos on it and my cousin lost the manual... it's fairly new, i bought it last year. i don't know how or why but it can only record for 3 seconds. Please can anyone help me?
it's a canon 60D dslr camera. i have tried doing the technique fhotoace told me but it only lasts for the maximum time of 30 seconds.

Answer
First use a 4 gb SDHC card, Class 10
Second do not leave the camera in live view before you start shooting. This heats up the CMOS sensor, so when you finally get around to shooting your video, the sensor is hot enough to automatically shut off.

The longest Full HD video file you can take is about 17 minutes or 4 gb, which ever comes first.

If you shoot using a script, you will not need such long takes, closer to one to three minutes

My digital camera can record short videos but I am wondering if I would be better off getting a regular video camera for this purpose?

Answer
It is definitely better to get a regular video camera for creating videos. The video mode on digital cameras records the wost quality video. I am a film maker and there is nothing worse than video recorded on a digital camera. If you are looking for ease in uploading video, I would recommend purchasing a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) video camera. These cameras have a built in hard drive and record on to the drive instead of tapes like some cameras. You can purchase these cameras with very large drives which will allow you to record a lot of video. I have included some links to a particular camera that I think you may like. A word of advice, if you choose to purchase a camera, don't purchase it from a regular retail store like Best Buy, Circut City, etc. They are all way over priced and their associates can't tell you everything about the camera. Purchase from a site called B&H Photo. They are much cheaper. Each product is brand new and comes with full warranty. The two links that I have included compare the price for the same camera at B&H Photo and Best Buy. I purchase all of my video equipment from B&H Photo and have been very happy with the service I have received. If you ever have any questions about video, feel free to contact me directly at, noble_mark25@yahoo.com and I will be happy to answer any questions that you have. I also do still photography.

Are camcorders good for still photography as well?

Sunny Deol

Or are they only meant for video recording?
How about the Sony DCR SX21E?

I am finding it difficult to choose between a digital camera and a camcorder, so asking.

Answer
If you think about it, you could answer your own question.

Video is shot at 30 fps, which means that you have no ability to use controlled shutter speeds like 30 seconds or 1/4000th second and all those in between

Pick the camera that most suits your needs.

If you want to shoot still images, buy a digital camera.

If you want to shoot video, buy a video camera

If you want to shoot both, some dSLR cameras have a video feature, you you may want to read this first.

What video cameras are not sensitive to sound?

best video camera for recording concerts image
Q. I need a camera to record my friend's and I. We make a LOT of really loud noise.. I also wanted to take this camera to a concert one day and (the Lady I want to see is really loud) I notice a bunch of people record concerts of hers on youtube and they pick up very good sound quality. It is really important that we get a non sensitive to sound video camera so we can create these videos for our facebook page and youtube channel. Maybe even school projects.

Answer
The issue is not whether a particular camcorder or camera that records video is "sensitive" to sound, but rather whether the audio gain can be controlled so when loud audio happens, the camcorder's automatic audio gain control is not overwhelmed resulting in static or muddy audio being recorded.

For consumer grade camcorders at the ow end, *some* have a setting called "mic attenuation". "Normal" audio is recorded with attenuation off. For loud audio, go into the camcorder menu and select Mic attenuation to be on.

As the camcorders get more expensive manual audio control get more granular - that is, rather than "loud or normal" it is more like a volume control. This is the best way to go... The Canon HF R series has the attenuator selection. The HF M and HF S series have 10-12 steps to control the audio level. Similarly priced Sony and Panasonic camcorders will have similar functionality.

Good luck not getting the camcorder confiscated during the concert... once they take it, the camcorder is gone forever. Hope you can afford that.

What is a good but not really expensive video camera to buy?

i have a pc and a camera. Just wondering if i can use my camera to record my services and upload them to the web immediately?

Answer
Sure. Just record a video of the service with the camera, then connect the camera to your PC and copy the files over, or remove the memory card and put that into a USB reader for your PC and copy the files over. From there, you can upload the video files to YouTube or something.

This assumes that you have a camera that records on a memory card or in internal memory. If it records on tape, things get more complicated, because you have to run the video through a converter or special graphics card to get digital files that you can upload onto the PC.

Having a video editing program helps, too. Windows Movie Maker can let you do simple editing that can improve the finished video a lot.

Is there a market for supplying people with portable covert conversation documenting video cameras? #Security?

M

Well it would be nice to (yes this is kinda creepy) have proof of intellectual property whilst discussing private business plans with a mentor. Some of my money ideas have been stolen and used but I would have had no way to prove it. Anyways, is this a technology? And could I provide it to people if I could learn how to build the covert portable cameras?

Answer
Covert cameras for personal use are seen as fun little toys but if you could market it to business owners or high end business professionals that could use some sort of documentation when in meetings then you might have something. NOW with that said it is illegal to record audio without the consent of one or all the parties involved so that will be a hurdle. To give you some ideas of covert cameras I have put in some links to a few I found with demo video so you can see them in action.
