Good video camera for recording live music?

johners_19

I play a few small-time gigs in pubs and bars, and i'm after a video camera with decent video quality and good audio quality, to upload some stuff to Facebook and YouTube etc. Budget of £200 (willing to look on ebay if that helps lower the cost). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
You will not be pleased with the audio if you use the on-camera microphone, especially for music in a pub or bar. Ideally, a camcorder with an external microphone is better. But the best way to record the audio is with a audio recorder. Also, those pubs and bars are probably going to be dark and not very many camcorders do well in low light. Your budget is not enough to do what you want, if you want to do to well.

Recording Live music video question?

Nate Rodri

I was wondering how do i put reverb on a mic when you are recording from webcam or something.

I was thinking, do i have to recording it while shooting the video then add the music to it later or is there a way to do it? I have heard of people doing it before so i was wondering..

Thanks yall

Answer
It is pretty common with shooting a video to record the song, finish all the editing and mixing, and have a complete product before shooting the video itself. That way you would lip sync your own song in the shooting of the video and it'll all match up. That's what you would do if you were working with multiple scenes/camera angles/ etc. Putting reverb on the mic itself would have to be done through a pre-amp or the recording/editing software itself if you just are singing to the webcam and don't plan on really using any cinematography. On the software it should be pretty easy there's usually an option somewhere that allows you to set reverb and the amount so that during playback it'll be there. This is usually done after recording though. (Note: You would technically also need to be recording video and audio separately here but you'll just have both going simultaneously.)

Hope this helps.

Hand held video recorder (not a camcorder) for surveillance camera?

Virus

I have a LED Infrared camera that I want to take out of my house. I want to know if there is a portable box or something I can hook it up to that will record what the camera takes in.

This is what I got
http://www.uxsight.com/product/images/m/en/led-ccd-security-safety-surveillance-video-camera-xs0038090811m.jpg

Answer
Yes, there are many choices for a portable video recorder. You must be sure you select one with the appropriate input format for your camera.

The link you included with your question showed only the picture of your camera, but judging by the RCA type connectors shown in the picture, it appears to have COMPOSITE video output with audio.

There are many portable recorders around. Just be sure you select one with composite (also known as A/V) inputs and you're all set.

Just do a web search for "Mini portable DVR" (Digital Video Recorder) and you will find many offers, with a wide range of features and prices.

Here are a couple links selected at random to retailers of such devices.

whats the difference between camera, video camera, video recorder and camcorder?

facobasten

Answer
Since you didn't give us any examples (model numbers) here it goes.

Camera ... generic. Any light tight box with a lens that can expose film, either still or motion. Recently this includes video cameras and digital cameras

Video camera. What they use at television stations, sports venues ... sometimes they can weigh over a ton and are attached to a control room via a cable which carries video, audio feed as well as a separate duplex audio connection so the director can talk to the operator to call "shots".

Video recorder. Most common is the VCR (VHS), but include broadcast quality beta max and even 2" tape recorders.

Camcorder. A handheld video camera which has a built-in recording system (tape, hard drive, CD, DVD or memory card)

What is a good digital video camera for recording loud live music?

Timpala

I currently have a Sony Mini DV camera that shoots good enough video when shooting my band, but the sound sucks. My Sony point & shoot digital camera sounds better. I want a small camera with a good size hard drive that records really good sound for loud live rock & roll. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Timpala,

The best option,in my opinion, would be a camcorder with a
external microphone. I understand that's not ideal at concerts.
So,maybe these links are helpfull for you :

Searching the net, I stumbled upon this again and again.
It's a unknown brand to me but it seems to have good
sound quality (mind it has a resolution of only 640x480) :

What camera should I buy to record live music?

mak_daddy1

I'm looking to record live music (rock - heavy stuff like Grunge and Punk) but I cannot seem to find any device which boasts the ability to do so. Any camera I have used, bar my old Sony Tape Recorder (the model number has been destroyed), has a completely distorted sound. I want to move digital now, with a worldwide audience being available at the click of a button through YouTube and such, because transferring the tapes to digital video files is a tedious and long process.

I would appreciate any help that may be provided and I would also like to note that I'm in a restricted budget, but would like to see all of my options.

Thanks,

Answer
Any camcorder with manual audio control. The cheapest one I know of are the Canon HV30 and the Sony HDR-HC9.

Other option is to use a field recorder and replace the crappy audio captured with the video with the audio captured by the field recorder when you edit the video. Edirol, Marantz, Tascam, Sony, M-Audio, Zoom... among others...

What kind of video camera should I buy to film HS basketball games?

NEEDANSWER

Needs to be good quality
Needs to have larger memory than a DVD camcorder

Answer
You didn't tell us your budget.

Since the miniDVDs have only 20 minutes record time, pretty much anything will be fine. DVD based camcorders compress the video stream the most, so pretty much anything will provide better quality.

Least compression = best video quality.

MiniDV tape is least compression when compared to other consumer camcorder storage media. Tapes - at LP mode - come in 60 or 80 minute times. Change tapes at half-time.

Basketball games can get loud. You will need manual audio control - and use it. The least expensive camcorders - of which I am aware - with manual audio control, are the Canon HV20, HV30, Sony HDR-HC7 and HC9. These camcorders also have an external mic jack - bu I don't think you will need it - the built-ins will probably be just fine. If you do not have manual audio control the audio of the game will get too loud causing clipping and the sound will be really muddy.

Whichever camcorder your get:
Get one or two rechargeable high-capacity batteries.
Use a tripod.
Learn to use the white balance.
You may need to invest in a 2x tele lens.

Shooting fast moving sports well is not easy - good luck.

what are the best hd video cameras under $300 that record sports well in low light conditions?

jdl12321

i know that the $300 is not a lot for an hd video camera and that it won't be the greatest video quality ever, but i'm just a college kid so my funds are limited to say the least. i record tennis matches with my brother, and we usually play at night, as well as basketball games (during the day). any thoughts?

Answer
no consumer HD camera can record sports action except as a blur. that is because of the super high compression. MPEG4, AVCHD and similar codecs record only one actual frame and then throw out the next 7, giving it a GOF factor of 8. on playback the missing frames have to be guessed at by interpolation, which gives blurry jumpy results.

the solution is to use the system most widely used by action sports videographers, which is miniDV. while not HD it can be shot in the widescreen mode so the picture will fill an HDTV screen. And you can get one for under $300, look at the Canon ZR960.

Recording voice in video camera?

happygirl

If I had shot a video using a canon camcorder, can I play back and then add voice by using a plug in mic? What kind of mic can I buy for recording?

Answer
You can not add audio for the video in-camera. But, you can leave the lens cap on and record your voice with the camera. It will be a black video clip that you can edit it in later using your video using video editing software like Windows MovieMaker, etc.

The better way is to record your voice using a mic plugged into your PC and using your PC recording program. Your audio will be saved as a .wav file and that can be added and/or replace the existing audio of your video in the editor program.

Ideally, the best audio is done by using a separate recording device. I use a Zoom 4Hn for voice, music, and ambient sound.

Video camera recording to computer?

The Chaos

I have an Simo USB multi-cable with fire wire and a Canon Z3 100. I would like to record video straight from the camera to the computer. Is this possible? Without the use of tape, that is.

Thing is, my Canon for some odd reason is rejecting any videotape I put into it.

Your Canon is not a video camera!! It is a digital still camera!! What you want to do you need a camcorder or a webcam!! Still cameras cannot stream video!!

With that price your fancy camera could actually become one of the digital SLR cameras.

One is $40 above your budget but real great is Nikon D3000

Flip video camera has a problem/ Flip doesnt record 2 hours?

spr619

I have a Flip video camera, The Ultra HD that records 2 Hours and for some reason it says it only has 1hr and 47min, and i even deleted everything on the camera and it still says that, Please i need to have it fixed by 3/25/2011
please
I could always record 2 hours, this happened recently that i cant now

Answer
Scotts right,

I think the file system on the flip will be fat32 it has a maximum file size, which will work out at about your time limit.

If it did more than that then format the drive do not delete it, that will clear off everything, all formatting does its basicall hide the file and tell the camera that it can record over it.

Since when can you record 2 hours on a Mini-dv tape 63 minutes sp or or for those who dont want to spend money 90 minutes LP

Best Prosumer Video Camera for under $2,000?

Tyler P

Hello.
I'm an amateur cinematographer, and I'm looking to upgrade from my Standard Definition Canon XL2, to a more crisp, and clean High Definiton camera.

I will be mainly using the camera for outdoor shooting, event shooting, and some greenscreen interviews. I will be mainly using this camera on a Camera Jib/Crane.

I'm looking for a Video Camera, not a DSLR, that can shoot full 720p/1080p High Definition 60i. My budget is for the camera to be under $2,000 U.S.D. It absolutely has to have Secure Digital (SD) Card recording capabilities, as it is easier than using DV tapes for what I am going to use it for.

Here are my following required qualifications:

-Must be capable of recording in 720p/1080p High Definition.
-Secure Digital (SD) Recording Capabilities
-HDMI/Component Video Output (External Monitors)
-Hot Shoe
-Microphone Input (XLR/Standard Input)
-Viewfinder (Of course)
-Tripod Screws onboard camera
-Low-Light shooting capable
-Firewire Port
-Under $2,000 U.S.D

* -Power Zoom
* -LANC Controller input

*Although I know several cameras cannot perform power zoom, It would be quite hard for me to film on a camera crane, which is my main essential use, without using a LANC Remote to zoom. Manual Zoom is impossible while a camera is mounted on a crane high in the air without anyone to operate the zoom.

*Now if there is absolutely no way to have power zoom, is there a way to have a lens converter that will convert a manual zoom, to a power zoom?

Some Perferred Qualifications: (Not Required, but I would like them.)

-XLR Microphone Inputs
-Dual Battery Inputs
-Dual SD Inputs
-Internal Memory
-Interchangeable Lens System

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
You have not budgeted enough for the "prosumer video camera".

There is no "prosumer" camcorder with XLR inputs under $2,000. Use of an XLR adapter is required - no cable tails. So one of the units from BeachTek or juicedlink. We don't know which mics are planned - best if you get an XLR adapter that can supply phantom power.

There is no flash memory-based camcorder under $2,000 with a firewire port.

If the camcorder is far away on a camera crane, what is the purpose of the viewfinder?

Assuming "low light capable" = good, clear, low light, video capture, there is no camcorder less than $2,000 that has a large enough lens filter diameter (on built-in fixed lens mount) + LARGE 3CCD or 3CMOS imaging chip array (1/3 inch or larger).

"Tripod screws onboard camera"? Never heard of this. All camcorders and cameras from about $100 to about $5,000 use a 1/4"x20 tripod mounting screw supplied by the tripod manufacturers - not the camcorder manufacturers.

How can XLR mics be both required and "Not Required, but I would like them"?

There is no camcorder or camera with "dual battery inputs". There is a single battery + external power input from an external power source. Since you are running the LANC cable, run power, too. Another option is to have an optional rechargeable battery from the camcorder manufacturer charged and ready to go - When one is in use, the other is charging. Or you can get a "battery plate" see Anton Bauer - they make them for different cameras - the plate usually sits between the camera and tripod - or in your case, between the camera and crane "stage". Be sure the crane is rated for ALL the weight: camera, battery plate, cables, mic(s), light(s), anything else on the crane/jib. And keep in mind that the stand - tripod or whatever - holding the jib is rated to carry everything. It would be a bummer to watch the whole thing fall over because the weight rating for the crane and support was not taken into consideration.

The memory storage type is unimportant. The important part is the low-compression format that camcorder records... No AVCHD. There is no DV/HDV format camcorder under $2,000 that records to flash memory unless you include an external memory recording device (like the Vitec - Firestore devices or the external recorder from Sony - HVR-MRC1). Other good, low compression, formats include MXF (Canon and Sony) and DVCPro HD (Panasonic). None of the camcorders that support these formats are "under $2,000".

The Sony HVR-Z7 get you close but misses the budget. Same with the Canon EOS Cinema Cam. Black Magic Design might have something (if the features requirements are reduced).

Good luck!

What kind of video camera should I buy?

Erika

I have made a few documentary shorts with a point and shoot, Canon Powershot. They are on websites. I would like to improve quality, possibly even show it on a large screen. What do you recommend I purchase? I will be shooting two girls surfing, modeling, in plays, etc. I will also be interviewing the mom.

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

Does the Olympus Evolt E-520 Digital SLR Camera have video capture?

ccg

I got the camera for christmas and still don't know everything about it.
So, I'm really curious to know if it can take videos and how to do it.

Answer
No, like most Digital SLR's it DOES NOT have video capture. But hang on to the camera and learn the still photography techniques. Recently, DSLR manufacturers have started adding this feature to some models and I believe that it will become more common on the next "round" of camera models. So there will probably be a newer model soon that will be able to use the Olympus lenses and record video.

Keep in mind that, because of the larger sensor size in DLSR cameras they will need very large memory capacity to shoot video.

Answer
I just bought a casio exilim EX-Z75 with 7.2 megapixels about a week 1/2 ago. I have owned several different camera brands, and I can honestly tell you that there is nothing like the casio exilim. Especially if you are looking for pictures without blurriness, you have made the right choice. It has like a million different modes and settings, including different color modes (like black and white, sepia, red, green, blue, purple, pink, etc.), picture modes (even has an ebay mode!), it has modes for recording, menu modes (it has an easy menu mode). And best of all it has an antishake mode, to reduce blurriness in the pictures. The camera is extremely sleek and stylish, you can get it in different colors which is cool. It is easy to take anywhere. The battery lasts FOREVER, although it's a li-ion rechargeable battery not AA. It has 3x optical zoom. The LCD screen is huge, and it's very easy to use camera, one of the easiest to use in the market. It uses SD memory card. It has many different flash modes(including auto flash, where the camera chooses itself what type of flah it will use or if the picture requires any flash at all) , and it has different flash intensity modes.

And not to mention, the pictures are amazing.

Answer
While most cameras take video, and some camcorders take photos; to get the best of both, you need both. Have not seen a camera that compares with the video from a camcorder and camcorders can't take good quality photos. Suggest the least expensive Canon Camcorder and the Canon A590IS camera.
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=174&modelid=16172#ModelFeaturesAct ...

What gives a camera its picture quality?
It is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures. Mega pixel resolution is about potential photo size, not picture quality.

In new cameras, look for a viewfinder (LCD invisible in bright sun), optical image stabilizer, and check battery prices. High mega pixel settings take longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches. Click links below for more details.
http://www.kodak.com/eknec/PageQuerier.jhtml?pq-path=398&pq-locale=en_US&_requestid=2039 ...
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm ...

The Canon A590IS is a slightly older model that is available everywhere at great sale prices. Think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has auto focus, a viewfinder, optical image stabilization, and uses rechargeable NiMH batteries.
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/A590IS/A590ISA.HTM ...
http://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...

For expanded wide angle or telephoto capabilities, the A590 IS is compatible with Canon's accessory lens adapters: A small button next to the lens bezel is actually a latch; press it and you can remove the bezel ring, exposing a bayonet mount for accessory lenses. Canon offers the WC-DC52 0.7x wide-angle lens, the TC-DC52A telephoto lens, the 250D 52mm closeup lens separately, along with the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them on the camera. (Note that the wide, tele, and macro lenses all need the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them to the camera. The lenses won't work by themselves.)

There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something above that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the second link in the information above for an example then search for your camera of choice at the upper left. Camera prices at this link change often.

This could be the best slim line camera with a viewfinder and ... It's PINK, but it uses a $49.50 Series G Rechargeable 960mAh lithium-ion battery.
http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Sony%20Cyber-shot%20DSC-W150%2FR%20Digital%20Camera:1995337750;_ylc=X3oDMTB0bjZzaWNuBF9TAzk2NjMyOTA3BHNlYwNmZWVkBHNsawNlbGVj ...
http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/default.asp?newsID=3462&review=sony+cybershot+w150 ...

There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best. The second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

CAUTION Do not overcharge! Batteries can be damaged. Use an automatic two or more hour Energizer Compact smart charger with temperature monitor, trickle charge technology, and safety timer ($9.76) at Walmart. Use pre-charged 2000mAh Duracell ($12.97) or RayOVac ($5.97) batteries (both hold charge one year) and a full cycle charge. To preserve battery charge, use the viewfinder.

CAUTION To prevent memory card corruption, keep batteries charged and don't delete. Wait for lights to stop flashing then turn camera off before removing memory. For card readers, double click Safely Remove Hardware. Select, then click Stop and OK.

Lots of great camera tips in this link.
http://www.danscamera.com/Learning/going_digital/#resolution ...

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7 x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Once you select a camera, read all about it in the owner's manual. You can view owners manuals at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

The source links show most of the cameras out there with prices and make digital cameras work better with help on cleaning camera and battery electrical contacts.

Is there a setting on a digital camera to prevent sound distortion during video recording?

J

Is there a setting on a digital camera to prevent sound distortion during video recording (where there is loud bass in the environment such as a concert)?

When I take video with my Canon SX260 digital camera, the sound gets distorted when there is loud bass in the environment. For example, sound in the video always gets distorted when I shoot video at concerts.

This video on YouTube is exactly what happened to my Canon SX260:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgK57t9_g7Q&list=UUyXqYTlNZEVOowEg6hPG18g&index=1

Thanks

Answer
Your Canon PowerShot SX260 is aconsumer point&shoot camera designed to capture still images. Capturing video (and audio) is a "convenience feature".

Read the manual:
http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/7/0300007147/01/pssx260hs-sx240hs-cug-c-en.pdf
There is no setting or option to change/control the audio gain. Your reported symptom is a common one - but not unexpected. If you get a camera designed for video (and audio) capture, there may be some sort of audio gain control. I am not aware of any point and shoot camera that has any sort of audio gain control. All will be overpowered by loud audio.

Your SX260 is about $300. For around the same $ the Canon HF R200 has audio gain control. Read the manual: http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/3/0300004613/01/HFR20_21_200_IM_N_EN.pdf
See Page 75.

If you do not want to replace the SX260, then you can record the audio separately using a digital audio recorder with manual audio gain control. I like (and use) the Zoom H2. The H1 is less $ (and less featured). You can easily synch the externally captured audio with the video when you edit - after synching, mute the poor audio captured by the camera.

Advice about neighbors children?

Micha

They have always been obnoxious pieces of crap, but over the last six months I have really decided I want to take some sort of action against them. There are 3 boys between 12-15 and are totally unsupervised despite the fact that their mother is home 24/7. The last six months of my pregnancy I was called slag, whore, slut, as well as other much more foul names. I was told that I love @#$% and was asked by the oldest one if I wanted to perform a sex act on him. (My words not his). I've talked to the parents but not only did they do nothing, they called me racist (they're Muslim) and claimed I'm making up lies to run them out of the neighborhood. I called the police after the 12 year old spit at me while I was putting my daughter in the car, and again last month when I caught the 15 year old peeping into my bedroom window. The second time the police were contacted the father came over and pounded on my door threatening me, and so I called the police again. For some reason NOTHING gets done even by the police. My husband has been away for the last seven months for work and for some reason, the harassment has become worse. What should I do? I'm one step away from hiring a bunch of 15 year old boys to come kick the crap out of them.

Next door there is a teenage girl. She is really pretty and sweet, she helps our four year old ride her bike and I always see her doing chores for her step mom. The dad is a very good man and the step mom seems sweet and very well dressed/clean/hard working and stuff.

The teenage girl runs away from home every now and again and skips school ALOT (I know because the step mom talks about her alot. From what the (supposedly sweet) step mom said, the girl - jen- has been trhough alot, her mom and brother died in a car crash when she was 9. The step mom - christy- says she does everything for this girl yadaya blahblah.

So once in a while I hear screaming from the house. A month ago this girl was standing on the front porch in her bra and underwear with makeup smeared all over her face and body. I ran over with a blanket and covered her and asked her what happened she says "I got caught wearing lipstick and my stepmom beat me and smeared this all over me and locked the door" I cried with her and offered to call the cops...she begged me not to, she says she has called the cops and they dont believe her because christy is so perfect and the girl has a record -- running away and skipping school, shop lifting food so she can eat etc. She even went to counselors at school, cps....Nobody will help her.

I asked her to tell me what other things go on when I hear her screaming. She says last week chris held her down and tried to shave her head as a punishment for not brushing her hair. Sometimes she gets hit. Chris calls her dead mother a whore and took away the only things she had from her mother ( a teddy bear from the hospital and a heart shaped pillow) chris ripped these things up the day after her mom died. The mental abuse is horrible...another story she told me was that she took her dog for a walk and a loose pit bull came out of nowhere and bit the dogs leg...her step mom put a gun to the dogs head and threatened to shoot it...apparently that happened when she was about 9.

She tells her dad all the time but when he comes home chris is always so nice, the perfect mom. Most of the time when I see chris and jen they look like mother and daughter, laughing and shopping...But those screams I hear sometimes make my soul cry...I sit in my room and cry. I asked my husband what to do but he said its too complicated.

Answer
set up a video recorder and catch the mayhem in the act.....or at least advise the girl to attempt it on the inside. Or just have her use a cell phone or digital camera on record and put it in an obscure spot. Don't even need to get video, I'm sure the conversation will be interesting enough. Tell her to build up a case, don't just run to pops with one recording. Record as many interesting screnarios as possible unless it's becoming too unbearable. Cause if the dad is too passive, he may regard it as just a one time deal. But the more crap that is shown, it may show how serious it is. And make sure that when showing the pops...it's in secrecy and not in front of Chris....don't want to let her get wise as to what is happening.

And if some solid evidence is gathered and Pops is still in denial. I'm sure some legal action with the evidence will straighten some people out.

Has to be a great cam it's not like someone's holding it recording me

DSLR Cameras, all Makes, all Models, all have the same problem when video taping some long videos, all overheat at the 13 to 18 minute mark, depending on the Make and Model. This is unavoidable, it all has to with the fact, video is an afterthought in DSLR camera production.

Does the Mega pixel of a camera matters on the Video Recording?

The_One

does it matter if it's a 2.0 Mp camera or 5.0 Mp camera for recording?

what should I also consider on video recording?

I'm not trying to get those high class Camcorder...just planning on mobile phones (Iphon, LG viewty, LG shine, Samsung ect)

Answer
No, the mega-pixel value of the lens is not necessarily directly relevant to the performance of a camera that is recording video.

When looking for video recording, make sure the device is capable of recording at a rate of 30 frames per second (FPS). This is considered the standard national frame rate for the United States. Other countries use PAL, which is based on 24 FPS.

If you plan on recording video for use like in web pages, then the 320x240 resolution might be suitable for you.

If you want to have a better video recording, like something you might want to burn to DVD, then you need to have a camera that can sustain 30 FPS at a 640x480 minimum resolution.

The chips that are used to 'catch' photos that are installed in most all camera phones are of low quality. They are just not in the same category at all. Camera phones will also produce poor quality audio as well. Consider them good for catching emergency shots, for example like an automotive accident for evidence in a court of law.

While I would not go for a mobile phone for digital still photos or for video, I would go for a digital still photo camera that performs these functions.

For example, my 7.2 megapixel Sony camera takes great photos. It takes darn good video with audio as well. The video clip lengths are only limited by the amound of flash memory you have in your device. I really love this camera. Not to mention, as of December 15th 2007, it is currently going for something like $129.99 USD. It even comes with a carrying case, Sony rechargeable batteries, disposable batteries, hand strap, internal memory, and an intuitive user interface to boot. Check it out here: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=20005005 or browse to http://www.sony.com/ and search for Cyber-shot® DSC-S700.

Hope this helps.

What is the best and cheapest video camera for recording at night?

Zoe

Lately we have been having some very vicious thunderstorms. Within the last 10 days I have seen a mesocyclone and a tornado (not in the same day!). There is an amazing lightning show going on north of here, and my Panasonic mini DV won't pick up the lightning in the clouds. Neither will the crappy camera on my cell phone. =(

Answer
I have a Canon FS11. Try the Canon FS100 ($400) and then buy a 2GB SD card for like $30. You can't really go lower than that price because cameras around and below this range don't usually have the best capabilities at night. If you want, check out a Sony Handycam. Sonys have this "nightshot" feature that uses infrared technology to see in the dark. Hope this helps!

How do I make my HD video camera to Night Vision ?

ilovecomed

I have this Sony's HDR-TG1 (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HDR-TG1-Definition-Handycam-Camcorder/dp/B0017008HC/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1243731908&sr=8-14)

If I attach a infrared light on it, does that allow me to capture a night vision video ? Thanks in advance!

Answer
Pretty much.
What application are you looking for?
You will already discover that your camera is night vision. Your camera is sensitive to infrared light, and will capture it. Prove it, switch it on and record yourself holding the TV remote. Press buttons on the remote. Play back and see that you can see the light blinking from the remote. The camera can see the IR light, but your eyes cannot. Your camera is already night vision ready.

To turn it into a night vision camera, you probably want to use it in the dark with no *visible* light source. Therefore you are going to need an IR spot light. The size and strength (brightness) of this spot light will be based on where you are using it. If you are just taking shots in a small room, i t wont need to be so big. If you want to see what your dog is doing in the back yard at night, you might need something much bigger.

On TV, when you see night vision footage, they are always using a huge IR spot light. You just cant see this light with your eyes. But you will notice that in the footage you can see shadows, hence, a spot light or two is being used. You can search for IR lights on the internet. LED ones are available, which are great for short distances of maybe upto a metre.

You can also use IR filters placed over normal lights. Cheaper, but you WILL see a red glow from under these ligths, it won't be invisible. I don't know where to get them from, sorry. Research IR filters. This is what they are using in the jungle when taking night vision shots. The animals dont care if there is a bit of a red glow coming from something.

Lights that are purely IR alone are probably going to only be the LED variety, as they have a narrow bandwidth spectrum of light. Very bright lights are usually incandescent ligths (burning filiment inside a glass tube) which have a broad spectrum, and filters are used to narrow the spectrum, but the filters are never perfect, hence the red glow from them.

Interestingly, a heat source can be used as IR light. Very inefficient though. If you have and electric room heater, or electric hot plates on your stove, switch them on, switch off the light, turn on the camera, and you will see that they light up the room. However, most of the power consumed is heat and not light.

Best Video Camera Brand For Recording Guitar Playing.?

Dusty F

Whats the best video camera to use for recording people playing guitar & thats compatable with Windows Movie Maker

Answer
For compatibility with WMM, go for a MiniDV camcorder - the brand doesn't really matter. I was assuming you were going to record in your room rather than on stage, so you'll need an external mic to avoid recording the camera noise. If you need to play loudly, you'll need some manual gain control to avoid adding unwanted distortion - camcorders don't go up to 11.

What is the best durable video camera for sports under 500$?

I ski, play lacrosse, skateboard, and mountain bike. I already own a gopro and that is great for first person but I need something that someone else can use to film me. Price isn't really that much of an issue but i don't want to drop 1000 bucks on something that will likely get damaged while filming.

Can I record video from my tv?

Kris

So heres the deal, I have a sony full hd1080 Exmor hd video camera recorder, is there a way with some certain cords to be able to record televison or movies watched on my tv? what im asking is can i record with this other than by just pointing it at my televison?

Answer
Maybe but doubtful.

You can ONLY if your camcorder/video camera has an external video input for recording.
You would need base band video and audio inputs. Run the cord from the source you want to record, like a cable box, DVD player etc, into the audio/video input of the camera.

If the camera does not have video audio inputs then NO you cannot except by recoding a TV screen.

What is the best camera (or DSLR??) for HD video recording?

chono

I'm srry if what I'm saying sounds dumb or something because I'm totally new to like recording and cameras and pixels/frames/lenses, all that jazz. I really want to start making more quality videos for my youtube channel and I wanna purchase a new camera to do video recording with. i know that a lot of cameras have really good focusing/auto focusing (i dont know what its called). I'm looking for something around $300-600 (less than 300 would be awesome) In generally, I just need help finding a camera with good focus and takes quality- decent video for a reasonable price..
I know this is totally not specific but any recommendations will be appreciated

Answer
Most compact camera's will not do a good job in low light.
Most DSLRs will not auto focus during videos (because of the mirror which needs to be flipped for fast focusing) unless you buy a mirrorless camera which auto focuses.
You can buy a HD Camcorder which will do a pretty good job most of the time but the vidoes will not be professional looking. HD Camcorders will keep everything in focus most of the time (if not all the time) so you really can't keep certain things in focus and other things blurred. I mean selective focusing- similar to what we see in movies or nice videos.
Now if you are serious about decent quality videos and are fine to go with Manual focusing, you can take nice videos. Buy a Pentax K-01 body for around $300. Buy a Super Takumar M42 lens for around $100 with an adapter for Pentax. Once you get hold of the manual focusing, you will be amazed how beautiful videos taken be take on big sensors of DSLRs compared to any HD camcorders. If you want to use AutoFocus, your videos will keep getting that lens noise while it tries (and misses while)focusingg. Will be horrible when the light is low.

What is a good DSLR Camera that records HD video for around 300$?

Cody

Answer
There is none - unless you are oen to a bridge camera (can't change lenses). But...

If video is important, then a camcorder is preferred. It is designed to capture video. And audio. capturing still images is a secondary "convenience feature".

If stills are important, than use a still image capture device. Capturing video (and audio) is a secondary "convenience feature". For example, if you read the documentation available for download from the camera manufacturer's web sites, you will find they will overheat when capturing video "for prolonged periods" (about 15 minutes maximum) and stop video capture until it cools down (takes a long time)... or... check their built-in (mono) mic and no (or extremely limited) manual audio control. This means no stereo without an external stereo mic and adding something like a XLR adapter (~$350) to plug into the stereo audio input + use the audio gain controls... or... use an external audio recording device like a Zoom H2, H2n, H4n and take the extra steps to import and sync the audio when editing.

There are no camcorders under about $1,500 that have an interchangeable lens system (Sony NEX VG series).

I am not saying bridge cameras can't capture good video - they can - but they cannot be treated like a camcorder and they cannot replace a camcorder. For example, if you take a bunch of short duration videos because the project is scripted and you are using a shot list, then you should be OK. The time between the short sequences *might* be enough time for the camera to cool down. There are workarounds for lots of things that you normally don't need to worry about when using a camcorder... If you can plan properly, the a bridge camera might work.

Be sure to include lighting (flash and video) requirements, steadying devices (tripod - especially for video), power supplies... and lots of other "accessories" needed for successful video capture.

For $300 you are in the low range of consumer camcorders. Something in the Canon HF R series should fit quite well. We assume your computer and video editor can deal with the AVCHD compressed video for editing...

video recording camera?????

For my high school graduation, I wanna get a camera or video recorder or something, that allows you to take pictures (good quality) and put it up on Facebook. Something that also is good for video recording and you could post it up on facebook. Do you know the name of the thing? And where can i buy it?

I wanna buy it cuz so i could tell my friends how I am right now, how i'm doing in college, how the campus looks like, etc. Thanks.

Answer
Nearly any digital camera will do both.

Camcorders do much better for video, but can take still images to the limit of their sensor.

Still digital cameras have much finer sensors, and excellent photo capabilities, but moderate to decent video capabilities.

Most tablets/phones have still/video cameras, and can directly publish to the web.

A good camera or a camcorder for recording music cover videos?

Sheikh

I need a good camera or a camcorder for recording music cover videos and music videos . I'll be using a external mic so the sound of the camera won't matter much. But I want a camera with high quality video capacity and my budget is under 200 dollars

Answer
All digital still cameras an most camcorders in your price range do not have a mic jack - so recording the audio separately is likely required.

Less expensive camcorders have small lenses and imaging chip and will not record video well under low-light or poor indoor lighting conditions. You end up spending money on lighting. As the recording device increases in cost, the lenses and imaging chip get larger allowing for better low/poor light behavior. While that lens diameter and imaging chip size increases, the camera's feature set increases and various controls start moving out of the menu and to the outside of the camcorder.

Point and shoot cameras are designed to capture digital still images. Capturing video (and audio) are secondary "convenience features". No mic connection and very limited other controls...

Any device can capture decent video if the lighting is adequate. This could be as simple as capturing video outside during bright, sunny conditions or inside adding lights like tripod-mouted worklights (relatively inexpensive - or maybe already in the garage?) from the hardware store... or as complex (and expensive) as getting PAR56 cans mounted to light trees and use dimmers...

You should also use some sort of steadying device... this could be a chair, floor, shelf, stack of books or a tripod...

How do i record video and sound when guitar hooked up to my computer with my camera?

Zac

I have a toneport gx guitar port/program on my computer so i want to keep the guitar sound i have in my program instead of using and amp to record a video. So how do i shoot myself playing the song when the sound comes from the computer. Is there any way i can hook up the sound from my computer directly to my camera?
Thanks in advance

Answer
Since you didn't tell us which camera you are using (manufacturer and model number) we have no way to know if the camera has any audio-in connection or capabilities.

Possible work-around:
If the toneport gx guitar port/program can record what you are playing, then capture the audio there. Hopefully, it allows the audio to be save to a format your video editor can deal with.

Record your guitar playing with the camera. The camera will pick up whatever audio you and the guitar are making.

Import that video (and the audio) to your computer and video editing application.

Import the audio captured from the toneport gx guitar port/program to the video editor.

Sync the imported audio with the video. Mute the audio captured by the camera.

Camera for recording videos?

Katniss

I want to get a camera that's portable, but still fairly good quality, and is able to shoot videos with some quality, while remaining in my budget. I found a few that seem to meet those standards, but i have no knowledge about what makes a good camera so who am i to say.

Answer
All of the cameras you listed are
Sony DSC-H200B
Canon PowerShot ELPH 320
Canon PowerShot ELPH 110 HS
Sony DSC-WX50
Nikon COOLPIX S9050
point and shoot cameras (well, the H200 is a bridge camera, but still qualifies as a P&S - not a dSLR).

These cameras are all designed to capture still images. Their ability to capture video and audio are secondary "convenience features". This does not mean they cannot capture good video - they can - but you should not expect to treat them like a camcorder. There will be issues with file size limitations, video length limitations, poor/no audio control and no external mic jack. For the most part, their lenses are small - as are their imaging chips - and this results in poor low light video recording behavior.

If video - and audio - are the primary reason for your purchase, it would be much better if you got a camcorder designed to capture video and audio. For just a few more dollars than the H200, the Canon HF R30 is a good entry-level camcorder with a mic jack and rudimentary audio control (and it can capture still images as a "convenience feature").

If we are limited only to the 5 you provided, in descending order:
Sony DSC-H200B
Nikon COOLPIX S9050
Canon PowerShot ELPH 320
Canon PowerShot ELPH 110 HS
Sony DSC-WX50

GE W1000 camera records audio but not video?

xXAlbinoCr

So, here's the issue;

the only 'working' camera in my house is my GE W1000, and I need to record video I can download to my computer for an upcoming event.

However, here's the issue;
whenever I attempt to download a video I've recorded, once it saves on my computer, the file os audio-only, despite being marked as a .MOV file.

I have no idea how to fix this, and I would really like to have this answered as soon as possible. Thank-you!!

Answer
My research shows that the GE W1000 does shoot video.

Quick Time Motion JPEG, Audio: G.711 [Monaural]
Movie Recording - 640x480pixels: 20fps/15fps, 320x240pixels: 20fps/15fps
Max. Recording Resolution - 640 x 480

As you can see, NONE of the video recording resolutions are standard (30 fps for NTSC video) and there is NO HD video option

Your statement "... upcoming event .." makes me think that your shooting video of the event is important. Frankly you do not have the correct tools to do that

If you plan to shoot video of events in the future, think about buying an actual video camera or at least a P&S camera made by a reputable camera company, like Nikon, Canon, Panasonic, Sony, Olympus, etc. GE is NOT known as a camera maker, but rather for making excellent kitchen appliances and jet engines

What video camera should I buy to record YouTube videos?

Quinn

I'm trying to get a video camera that would be good to upload vids to YouTube. Not that expensive, just good quality.

DSLR Cameras, all Makes, all Models, all have the same problem when video taping some long videos, all overheat at the 13 to 18 minute mark, depending on the Make and Model. This is unavoidable, it all has to with the fact, video is an afterthought in DSLR camera production.

What is a digital camera with great photo quality & HD video recording with zoom capability in video mode?

Teresa

Good video quality is important too.

Answer
If you need good quality video you are better off looking at a camcorder that also takes good photos, these are far more common than digital cameras that take good video! The problem with still cameras taking video isn't the resolution, it's the focusing mechanism, it's just not fast enough (and in some cases is very noisy). Yes camcorders are bulkier, and the resolution is likely to be only around 7MP mark when taking stills (more than enough), but they are the far better option. You do need to remember though that you will probably get even better video if you opt for a camcorder that isn't so hot on still photography.

My main camera selection (there are a couple of past their sell by date cameras I'm not mentioning)
Sony A700 DSLR - Creative stills and "set up" photography
Sony DSC-W300 (crap) Pocket camera, spontaneous situations
Samsung VP-HMX20C - Video and Stills - great for use at gigs where I only want to be carrying one camera.

At the time I bought the Samsung it suited my needs better than anything else on the market at a sensible price, though very shortly after a better Panasonic model was released, and even better camcorders are now available. It's quite telling that at the time I bought this Sony (I'm a fan) didn't have anything even worth considering.

Good compact camera with full HD video recording under a grand?

APKINS

I usually drag my 60D around a lot but I would want a backup compact camera for stealth shots. I will be traveling into places where I cant afford to look as a tourist dangling my DSLR. I need a small camera that is capable of video as good as the 60D but small enough to slip in my pocket and blend in with the locals.
perhaps with good autofocus too. as I cant manually focus a compact point and shoot. thank you

Answer
ALL P&S cameras are under a grand.

There are some fine cameras that can shoot Full HD video that you can put in your jacket pocket

Here is a link that talks about these new small footprint cameras that perform well when shooting Full HD video and may fit your criteria
