Hand held video recorder (not a camcorder) for surveillance camera?

Virus

I have a LED Infrared camera that I want to take out of my house. I want to know if there is a portable box or something I can hook it up to that will record what the camera takes in.

This is what I got

Answer
Yes, there are many choices for a portable video recorder. You must be sure you select one with the appropriate input format for your camera.

The link you included with your question showed only the picture of your camera, but judging by the RCA type connectors shown in the picture, it appears to have COMPOSITE video output with audio.

There are many portable recorders around. Just be sure you select one with composite (also known as A/V) inputs and you're all set.

Just do a web search for "Mini portable DVR" (Digital Video Recorder) and you will find many offers, with a wide range of features and prices.

Here are a couple links selected at random to retailers of such devices.

whats the difference between camera, video camera, video recorder and camcorder?

facobasten

Answer
Since you didn't give us any examples (model numbers) here it goes.

Camera ... generic. Any light tight box with a lens that can expose film, either still or motion. Recently this includes video cameras and digital cameras

Video camera. What they use at television stations, sports venues ... sometimes they can weigh over a ton and are attached to a control room via a cable which carries video, audio feed as well as a separate duplex audio connection so the director can talk to the operator to call "shots".

Video recorder. Most common is the VCR (VHS), but include broadcast quality beta max and even 2" tape recorders.

Camcorder. A handheld video camera which has a built-in recording system (tape, hard drive, CD, DVD or memory card)

What's the best digital camera/video recorder out there?

rose franc

hi :) i'd like to know what do you think is the best type? a digital camera that can take pictures and videos.. right now i have a Fujifilm one i've had for a while, it's actually alright but i want to get a better one.

if you have ever seen any korean music videos i like the quality of their videos:)
the one on my current camera is kinda blunt compared to that.
i know they probably use professional video cameras but still that's ok as long as i can somehow transfer my things to a computer or laptop...
i'd like to know if you can share any type of information you know that could help... :)

the price doesn't matter.. thank you in advance :)

Answer
You are actually correct in your assumption. Those Korean videos look great because they are using the professional Cameras and expensive lenses. Although Lighting plays a big role on the outcome of your videos as well. I think you've noticed on your still cam that pictures come out better when shooting in daylight than when you are shooting indoors. This is the same as with a Video Cam. Another difference maker is the type of lens used.

Mom recently bought a Sony HD CamCorder and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the video it takes. Granted that its not as good as the professional ones, but its better than most I've used so far.

Anyway, just ask me if you need more clarification - Kuya

digital camera or video recorder?

Erica

would it be a better deal to get just a digital camera, or a hand-help video recorder that can also take still pictures, but it cost $100 more?

Answer
well the digital camera, depending on the megapixels are verry good for still shots. a video recorder like my Sony DVD camera, it has a VGA camera. which is like the lowest in quality. so if you want to take pictures, get the digital camera. but if you want to take strictly videos good, get the video camera.

Video camera or Recorder recommendation please help!?

Hi. I want to record my experiences and memoirs along with the time I spent with my friends and family. I am looking for some decent quality recording and if anyone can recommend something that is both effective and cheap, it would be great!

I saw many with 1 GB internal memory, but people said it could only record about half an hour. I have movies less than 1 GB and it runs for 2 hours. Please explain. I would want the ability to record at least 1+ hour with pretty decent quality. It doesn't have to be very high quality, but it has to be relatively movie like quality. Thanks!
Hi, I was wondering if you know any cam recorders that can record up to 1 hr or more. I would really appreciate benefiting from your wisdom!!

Answer
First for that kind of quality you'll need HD. There are many cameras on the market now that do a very nice job with HD.

I would bet that that 1gb you're seeing for a movie isn't the true readout from the disc. These films converted to video are at a very high data rate because of the speed the disc is rotating in the recorder and player.

Second you may have a problem finding a camera that will record for an hour straight. When you're recording video the sensor heats because of all those electrons passing through it so most camera makers restrict the amount of recording time for this reason. My t1i for example will run for about
12-minutes before showing heat on the screen and eventually shutting down.

Also I use 8gb / class 10 cards - the fastest out there. You'll need this to handle the huge data stream created by any HD recording device. Also you'll want either several 8gb or some 16's.

There is no cheap quality. Effective is a good word but to do anything of quality it'll cost you some money. Fuji makes a nice line of bridge cameras that do HD. I don't know what their record time limit is but I'd imagine there is one. The s1800 comes to mine for around $150. Understand you're getting a very cheap camera that probably won't last more than a couple of years but it may do the trick for you.

Good luck

What is a good compact camera for recording high-volume, high-definition audio/video?

Hello everybody. Here is the problem I'm having:

I am an enthusiastic concert attendee, and I go to a lot of Metal shows. I also like to record parts of the shows I go to, so I can go back and re-live the experience later. But these shows are LOUD! Around 115-130 decibels, to be more specific. And at that kind of high volume, most camera microphones are overloaded and the resulting videos have sound that is distorted, scratchy, and unlistenable.

What I have tried already:

I have owned a Fujifilm JV-100 in the past, and I currently own a Canon SX-260 HS and neither of these have decent audio. My fiancée's old Sony Cybershot DSC-W50, on the other hand, has great sound quality. The only issue with that is that it's ancient, shoots poor quality photos, and doesn't have full-HD video capability. I'm also not sure if the newer models of Sony Cybershots have the same quality of internal microphone and when I asked a sales representative about this and she was unable to give me an answer.

Limitations:

Using an actual camcorder is out of the question, as is buying an expensive digital SLR. It must be a compact, point-and-shoot camera because otherwise the event staff/venue security deem it a "professional device" and will not allow it inside the concert venues without a press pass, which I obviously do not have. I also cannot use a separate audio recording device, because it is impractical and I need the convenience of all the components (camera, video recorder, audio recorder) in one single device.

What I need:

Simply put, I need a compact, point-and-shoot camera that is capable of shooting in low-light settings, that is capable of recording HD video, and has an internal microphone that doesn't fuzz out at high volumes. I also need it on a budget, which is less than $400.

Please offer me some suggestions for what model camera I should look into buying. I'm tired of wasting my money on cameras that don't work under the rigorous conditions I have described. If there are other metalheads out there who've had the same problem, I'd really appreciate it if you could give me your recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Answer
The Sony Cybershot DSC-WX10 [ 16.2 megapixels]

What is the right phone for me, suggestions please?

I am planning on getting a new phone with Verizon and I don't know what to get. The features I would like are a decent camera/video recorder, mp3 player, and maybe some other unique features. I am not going to use it for texting or internet browers because I can't afford an expensive bill every month, but I want something that is cool looking and has some nice built in features. Nokia 5800 xpress music users, this is for you. Do you think that I should buy 5800 or an iphone?

I mainly use my mobile as a camera, video recorder, music player and also for storing my data and I know that nokia 5800 xpress music is better than iphone for all these things. But I have also heard that 5800 hasn't got such graphics like iphone and also a little uncomfortable while typing anything, because you have to press the buttons a bit harder. Is it true? What should I buy?

Answer
yes that's true that Nokia 5800 has better camera, 3.2 MP, Music player, Surround Speakers, but it all depends on your budget........no, its mot really hard, you also have Stylus pen, if your not comfortable enough using your finger........

VCity

I plan on starting a documentary in June and I am brand new to the filming business. I would like any suggestions on what camera or video recorder would be suffice and also what video editing software is reccomendable..

Thanks.

Answer
VCity, since you are "brand new to the filming business," I'll let you in on some little secrets...

1.--Video and film are not the same thing.

2.--Professionals don't buy their own cameras for projects unless they are videographers, they rent equipment and hire crews who know how to use it properly. Everyone has a specialized role so that each aspect of production is carried out as best as possible. This also stops people who only shoot one or two things a year from wasting their money on thousands of dollars of equipment that will be obsolete in a few years.

If you don't have any ideas on what camera(s,) lenses, lights, mic's, support, editing etc, you will need for your documentary, this indicates to me that you are not the person who should be making those decisions, nor should random people from the internet be determining this for your project.

Research some local video production companies and discusss your project with them. Expect fees to start at $1000 per full day of shooting for absolute minimal equipment and crew.

If you are still set on purchasing your own equipment, at least take a couple courses in basic video production before simply buying a camera and thinking you can make a watchable documentary. I mean, maybe you can and I'm just being cynical but after working in the industry for nearly 10 years, I've not met many people who can.

What I see more of are the terrible, barely audible, shaky, poorly focused/exposed footage of people who had a good idea but were in too much of a hurry that they now cannot really spread the word of their idea because nobody wants to watch their "low budget documentary."

Good luck with your project. Give it all the effort your idea deserves.
