Q. I'm looking for a digital camera with HD video recording capability.
I want it to have a descent optical zoom, a minimum of 12 mega pixels and good recording capabilities at night time (and photo).

Megapixels means nothing these days.. do you print out on A2? No? Good then you don't need more then 8 Megapixels
Right that said a good lens does matters. Good glass is so nice to have! And of course looking for image quality always important sometimes it is better to invest in a more limited model with better image quality because.. well you want the best right?
Night time recording? What is your budget? The point is that the laws of nature don't change to make a picture or a video you need LIGHT! Raising ISO' s will only get you so far..
I guess a DSLR could, it has a nice big sensor so low noise and coupled with the right lens [in your case a wide aperture prime] it would give relative noise free images and video at night. Do buy one with an external sound jack though because the in build microphones are usually pretty good at catching wind noise.
So most basic DSLR with HD video + Prime Lens + Tripod [really you are going to need it] and the basic set of memory cards and batteries. Oh and of course an external Microphone.. mmm $1100?

I'm looking to buy a digital camera. I'm a novice at best, but want something with professional looking photos and a good video recording capability (Audio is a must also.) What are your recommendations?

The Canon 300 HS is a fine choice. If you like it, then stick with it. I'd also suggest going to a nearby camera/electronic store to try out some for yourself though.

I also need very good HD video recording. I was thinking about a rebel T2i or a Nikon I don't really care about the brand just something. The most I will pay for it is 800 and that is just a Tad of a stretch. I want something that can take very professional looking pictures. Thank you.

my dslr camera records videos for only 3 sec. How do i make the duration longer?

First use a 4 gb SDHC card, Class 10
Second do not leave the camera in live view before you start shooting. This heats up the CMOS sensor, so when you finally get around to shooting your video, the sensor is hot enough to automatically shut off.
The longest Full HD video file you can take is about 17 minutes or 4 gb, which ever comes first.
If you shoot using a script, you will not need such long takes, closer to one to three minutes

Video, certainly - Audio is another matter. Technically speaking, video recording from the public domain (far less from your private car) is fair game at any time and is admissible. Audio on the other hand requires consent (or in some cases notice) to be admissible in court.
Two possible ways around this is a notice placed in a location visible from outside of your car (it does not have to be too overt) stating something to the effect of, "Vehicle equipped with audio/video recorders that may be used at any time."
The second is to inform the officer that he is being recoded AFTER you start. Given that it is your private car, they cannot tell you to turn it off and notice makes the recoding admissible. The problem is that you are almost certain to make the officer unhappy.
I think that recoding of police incidents is very important - many times I have seen officers bend the truth or mis-quote what a suspect had said. Their reports are taken as Gospel at court and the only way to disprove them is to have a recording - 20 witnesses on your behalf will not be as convincing.
Why should you not rely on police recorders? Well, first of all not all officers have them. Second, not all officers use them when they have them. Third, the officer knows when he turns the recorder on and off and behaves accordingly. What devices support 1/8 speed video recording and work well in low light?

My friend recently got a Galaxy Note 2 with a new phone contract. It does high speed (slow motion) video recording at 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 speed. It works VERY well at night. I currently use a Casio Exilim camera for slow motion video, but it's only good in the daytime. The ISO setting doesn't apply to videos, so they appear black except in direct sunlight.
Before I fork out $700 or more for a Galaxy Note 2, are there other devices that do 1/8 speed video recording and work well in lower-light conditions? Phones, cameras, tablets, etc... I don't care which.

you can't load data onto a data card at 8x speed. what the Galaxy does is "burst" recording. normal video is compressed by omitting 7 out of each 8 frames. but the solid state memory in the camera is fast enough to capture every frame. of course that memory fills up pretty fast, so after 5 or 10 seconds the burst stops and then you have to wait as the camera software converts those frames into normal video for storage on the SD card. On playback it gives the illusion of 1/8th speed video. This method of "high speed" recording is no better than ordinary miniDV recording since miniDV records every frame which can be slowed down in a video editor to the same quality standards.
the reason you don't need more light for this camera is because it is working at normal video speed (30 frames per second) so you have not increased the shutter speed at all. In true high speed video, the effective shutter has to be increased in step with the frame rate. That is why the Exilim requires more light at the highest settings. If you can accept burst recording at 8x versus continuous true high speed recording, then you can get that feature in a Sony camcorder which is superior in quality to the Galaxy.

In general, lighting will be the most important. You can use construction lamps to supply good light strong lighting for your scene until you an later afford proper video lighting.
It may be that even though the sensor in your camera is 9MP, the video feature uses only a portion of the sensor to give you a video resolution of something close to 1280 x 720 at 30 fps (about 1MP). In your research, you will find that some of the better video recorders use three sensors that are 3.1MP each (Red, Green and Blue) so can produce much higher resolution videos.

It seems that you use a USB cable to connect it to a computer and download the videos/photos that way.
From photos I can't tell what the button next to the USB socket says. Is it Mode? I'd guess that may switch between taking photos/videos and replaying them.

So i was planning to buy a xbox360. But then i found out about Kingdom Hearts DDD. So should I buy a 3ds to play Kingdom Hearts? I LOVE Kingdom Hearts. But a Xbox360 is so cool. I want a video camera mainly to record my travels. I will need it to have excellent video quality and great zoom. I also would like it to be able to have many hours of video that would be as compact as possible. I would like it to work well in low light and have decent sound quality. I am a student, so I can't afford anything too expensive (over $600ish). Thanks!

If you're traveling, I'd go with a MiniDV or HDV camcorder. Hard drive camcorders are too fragile for my liking, and the fact that everything's in one place means you lose the lot if the camcorder's damaged or lost. DVD based camcorders are too awful to even consider!
Don't get suckered into choosing something based on its optical zoom - the higher zooms (say 25+) aren't that useful as the picture becomes too dim and unsteady. Make sure whatever you get feels right for you - you don't want to miss the shot of a lifetime because you couldn't find the right button!

I want to video record my college lectures?

I'm going to be a junior premed student. I've already asked my professors if it would be ok to record during lectures, and they said its fine. Over the summer I took a Physics class and video recording the lectures to review later really helped with studying.
The only problem is that the battery of my camcorder only lasts about two hours before dying. Is there a camcorder out there that has a longer battery life? I had my camera on the lowest video quality setting and the battery still depleted.
I'm taking organic chemistry, Japanese I, animal physiology, and anatomy, and I want to record all of these classes (about 4 hours total recording time per day). Any options on better camcorders?

Do yourself a favour and learn to take notes with a high-tech writing implement and a high-tech paper notebook. Good luck with your studies, and try to avoid buying lots of spare batteries and memory cards.

From photos I can't tell what the button next to the USB socket says. Is it Mode? I'd guess that may switch between taking photos/videos and replaying them.

MPEG4, AVCHD and similar codecs record only one actual frame and then throw out the next 7, giving it a GOF factor of 8. on playback the missing frames have to be guessed at by interpolation, which gives blurry jumpy results.
the solution is to use the system most widely used by action sports videographers, which is miniDV. while not HD it can be shot in the widescreen mode so the picture will fill an HDTV screen. And you can get one for under $300, look at the Canon ZR960.

try seeing if you can get hold of recording stuff from a music shop that can enable you to connect it to your computer some things might come in packages and you can get computer programs like cubase where you can add other instruments and synchronize and do lots of fancy stuff with. i recorded guitar and drums through that software at school and then just used it to make it sound a little better.

If your Kodak ZD15 is okay with the video imagery, then use a separate audio recorder which is the best way to record for music video projects. You did not state your budget but something like a Zoom H1 digital recorder ($99.00) and used with a quality microphone is the cheapest option. But better yet, something like the Zoom H4n or Tascam DR100 (both around $290.00). They can use two mics (and the two on-board mics) and the ability to balance up to 4 channels. The important part is the microphone and for a way to adjust the gain, as music will peak and fall throughout the performance, and each instrument has its own unique sound waves. Using ear-muff style headphones will allow you to listen more accurately what the mic(s) is picking up. You may be able to rent a recorder and try it out to see if it will work for you. Check with your local music instrument stores. If you still are leaning towards another camcorder, just make sure it has an external microphone port and headphone port.

Then go get one of these http://www.asimplelife.ca/mixer.html and hook it to the mic input on your camera, that way you have control of the volumes of 4 microphones. If you cannot use mics(going to a concert) you are out of luck, any video shot at a concert, unless the crowd is deathly still, never works, audio is unusable
