Looking for a video camera to record amateur sitcom?

bigshow231

I'm an inspiring filmmaker and I need help on finding a video camera from $200-$350 for my new sitcom I'm about to film. Don't care for brand just need a really neat camera with HD, high fps, boom mic input & would record footage that look as if it came straight off of TV onto YouTube. What would you recommend...Help!

Answer
Hi "Big":

First, your budget is pretty low to get anything decent for pro-looking results, unless you buy used-gear. And contrary to popular consumer belief, you don't need "HD" to shoot high-quality 16:9 widescreen video. We haven't been in the "VHS quality" equipment era for almost 20 years, 'way before HDTVs entered people's living rooms. Just about everything made since 1990 shoots "DVD quality" video, and most have 16:9 widescreen settings.

Second, "high fps" has nothing to do with recording scripted TV shows. U.S. television is 30fps. Period. (You're not shooting "Mythbusters" or "Time Warp".)

(The correct term, BTW, is "aspiring" filmmaker. And if you want to do more than just aspire, pick up a book or two on modern filmmaking & video production techniques. And pick up a book on TV lighting techniques; that's where most of the "straight off of TV" look comes from. Here's a YouTube comedy short (shot by Jon Na) with great lighting, and almost 5 million views: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIV3DVxKBO8 )

For a starting point, which meets your budget and wish-list, the Canon Vixia HF-R300 is under-$300, can accept an external mike, and shoots full-HD at a respectable 24Mbps (digital bit-rate, near pro-quality). Here's the Canon USA webpage with specs & manuals: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/camcorders/consumer_camcorders/vixia_hf_r300#Overview

Just make sure your computer & editing software is up-to-par for handling AVCHD video footage. (Movie Maker ain't gonna cut it!) Otherwise, shop around eBay for a good used Canon or Sony MiniDV camcorder, which will give you near-broadcast quality footage, great digital sound, and be easy to edit.

hope this helps,

Good, light-adjusting video cameras?

Mrs. Huggi

I need a camcorder that can work well with low amounts of light (e.g. dusk, night) but without adding too much to the price. I mean it doesn't matter if it's that expensive, but hey there's a recession on! Know any? Please help!
like under 350 pounds

Answer
Camcorders record what they can see. Light comes in the lens, hits the imaging chip(s) and is converted to electronic signals the camcorder records to whatever media is used for storage.

Lenses and imaging chips are expensive (that translates into more cost in the camcorder).

As the lenses and imaging chips get larger, the camcorders' low light behavior gets better and the cost of the camcorder goes up. Please don't take this the wrong way - but your expectations of video quality ("work well with low amounts of light") need to be appropriately set.

The price range you provided to us in your budget is about where entry-level, consumer-grade, camcorders are. Lens filter diameter will be around 37mm and single imaging chip will be around 1/6".

Double your budget to get camcorders with 43mm lenses and single 1/4" imaging chip and a corresponding improvement in low-light behavior.

Triple your budget to get camcorders with 58mm lenses and single 1/3" imaging chip and a corresponding improvement in low-light behavior.

In my opinion, there is no consumer grade camcorder that "work well with low amounts of light". The lenses and imaging chips are just not big enough.

The jump to prosumer and pro-grade basically ends up being about 8x-10x your budget. These camcorders have 72mm lenses and 3-chip, 1/3" arrays. And all the manual controls available on the outside of the camcorder so they are easy to get to and use - not buried in the menu like consumer cams do.

Tip #1: Use a video light.

Tip #2: Use the white balance.

Sony, Canon.

A good camera or a camcorder for recording music cover videos?

Sheikh

I need a good camera or a camcorder for recording music cover videos and music videos . I'll be using a external mic so the sound of the camera won't matter much. But I want a camera with high quality video capacity and my budget is under 200 dollars

Answer
All digital still cameras an most camcorders in your price range do not have a mic jack - so recording the audio separately is likely required.

Less expensive camcorders have small lenses and imaging chip and will not record video well under low-light or poor indoor lighting conditions. You end up spending money on lighting. As the recording device increases in cost, the lenses and imaging chip get larger allowing for better low/poor light behavior. While that lens diameter and imaging chip size increases, the camera's feature set increases and various controls start moving out of the menu and to the outside of the camcorder.

Point and shoot cameras are designed to capture digital still images. Capturing video (and audio) are secondary "convenience features". No mic connection and very limited other controls...

Any device can capture decent video if the lighting is adequate. This could be as simple as capturing video outside during bright, sunny conditions or inside adding lights like tripod-mouted worklights (relatively inexpensive - or maybe already in the garage?) from the hardware store... or as complex (and expensive) as getting PAR56 cans mounted to light trees and use dimmers...

You should also use some sort of steadying device... this could be a chair, floor, shelf, stack of books or a tripod...

Tips for recording video in low light?

Cee

Anyone have any tips for recording video in low light situation?
I have an HTC EVO 3D and I also have a Nikon Coolpix camera.
I don't know which one produces better video in low light.
Even though one is a cell phone and the other is a camera, they both produce equally great video in the light.
Which is better for recording in the dark?
Any suggestions for settings I should have the camera on or anything?

Answer
Add light.

Small lens diameter and small imaging chips in the video capture devices you listed cannot capture "good video" under poor lighting conditions. When lighting is poor and a still image is captured, both units have a flash to provide adequate light - if the flash is not used or blocked, the captured image is poor. With video it is similar, but rather than a flash of light, a consistent light source is needed.

As the various cameras and camcorders increase in price the lens gets wider and the imaging chip gets larger. These are the main reasons they can behave better under poor lighting conditions. As you have found, when there is light, your video capture items work fine. This is basically the same with ANY camera. If there is enough light, it will record great video.

The only thing you can add to the cameras or environment is light.

What are the ideal settings to record great video in low light conditions on my Canon Vixia HG20 camera?

Raj

Love my Canon Vixia HG20 - except low-light is less than superior. Any suggestions would be approciated.

Answer
Rick is correct.

There is no consumer-grade camcorder that does well in "low light". The lenses and imaging chips are too small.

If you stay with that camcorder, then the suggestion is to turn on lights or use a video light.

If you need good low-light performance, then you must use a camcorder with bigger lenses and imaging chips (preferably in a 3-chip - CCD or CMOS - array). Big lenses allow more light in; big imaging chips do more with less light. Big glass and big chips are expensive - but the low light behavior is what draws the prosumer and professional users to them. If inexpensive consumer cams did well in low-light, the pros would be using them.

I want a video camera mainly to record my travels. I will need it to have excellent video quality and great zoom. I also would like it to be able to have many hours of video that would be as compact as possible. I would like it to work well in low light and have decent sound quality. I am a student, so I can't afford anything too expensive (over $600ish). Thanks!

Answer
If you're traveling, I'd go with a MiniDV or HDV camcorder. Hard drive camcorders are too fragile for my liking, and the fact that everything's in one place means you lose the lot if the camcorder's damaged or lost. DVD based camcorders are too awful to even consider!

Don't get suckered into choosing something based on its optical zoom - the higher zooms (say 25+) aren't that useful as the picture becomes too dim and unsteady. Make sure whatever you get feels right for you - you don't want to miss the shot of a lifetime because you couldn't find the right button!

Which Video camera should I buy for our family?

kaplah

I am looking for a video camera to buy for my teenage daughter (and the rest of the family) who enjoys creating movies on the computer. We had one, but there's no way to get the image onto the computer easily at home, so the new one should record to a memory card or we should be able to feed its data right into the computer. (the old one we could only do that with still shots) It also needs to have good sound quality and work well in low light conditions because I will be using it to record my partner's band's performances and we may use those for promotional purposes. Still shots are not required at all (never used it on the old camera, we've got another camera for that). It also needs to be tripod ready. Finally, it should be a good cost value because I'm not going to spend thousands of dollars on this thing. Any suggestions?

Answer
the camcorders with the build in hard drives are good. i believe jvc makes some like jvc everio-g gz-mg37us about ($500) would have been one if i didnt get my sony. i have a Sony handy cam dcr-dvd405 about ($500) which i love a lot except the minidvd format. your videos can only be 30 mins long before switching to another dvd.

What is the best video camera with decent sound recording (fit for beginner movie making) for under $1000?

mendwolf

I am primarily interested in basic filming equipment which would be used to film trips to haunted locations. These locations will often be very dark, so infrared, and decent low-light recording is a must.

Thanks!

Answer
The only camcorders that have a built-in infrared emitter are made by Sony and have the "SuperNightShot" or "NightShot" feature. If the feature is not listed, then the camcorder does not have the built-in emitter.

There is no consumer camcorder under $1,300 with "decent low light recording" behavior. The lenses and imaging chips are too small.

The least expensive Sony camcorder with an infrared emitter and a mic jack (required for any serious or semi-serious "film making") is the Sony HDR-HC9. As a miniDV tape based camcorder, transferring video (DV or HDV) to a computer requires a firewire cable to connect the camcorder's DV port to the computer's firewire port. USB will not work and USB-firewire converter/adapter/cable things won't work.

Hello everybody. Here is the problem I'm having:

I am an enthusiastic concert attendee, and I go to a lot of Metal shows. I also like to record parts of the shows I go to, so I can go back and re-live the experience later. But these shows are LOUD! Around 115-130 decibels, to be more specific. And at that kind of high volume, most camera microphones are overloaded and the resulting videos have sound that is distorted, scratchy, and unlistenable.

What I have tried already:

I have owned a Fujifilm JV-100 in the past, and I currently own a Canon SX-260 HS and neither of these have decent audio. My fiancée's old Sony Cybershot DSC-W50, on the other hand, has great sound quality. The only issue with that is that it's ancient, shoots poor quality photos, and doesn't have full-HD video capability. I'm also not sure if the newer models of Sony Cybershots have the same quality of internal microphone and when I asked a sales representative about this and she was unable to give me an answer.

Limitations:

Using an actual camcorder is out of the question, as is buying an expensive digital SLR. It must be a compact, point-and-shoot camera because otherwise the event staff/venue security deem it a "professional device" and will not allow it inside the concert venues without a press pass, which I obviously do not have. I also cannot use a separate audio recording device, because it is impractical and I need the convenience of all the components (camera, video recorder, audio recorder) in one single device.

What I need:

Simply put, I need a compact, point-and-shoot camera that is capable of shooting in low-light settings, that is capable of recording HD video, and has an internal microphone that doesn't fuzz out at high volumes. I also need it on a budget, which is less than $400.

Please offer me some suggestions for what model camera I should look into buying. I'm tired of wasting my money on cameras that don't work under the rigorous conditions I have described. If there are other metalheads out there who've had the same problem, I'd really appreciate it if you could give me your recommendations. Thanks in advance.

What is the best digital camera for concerts?

Melissa

I go to alot of concerts, and I need to get a new camera that has the ability to take vibrant picture, despite the low lighting of the venue, and have a fast shutter speed so the pictures don't turn out blurry.
The video on the camera needs to be able to record very loud music, and not turn out like a big growl into the speakers.
Perferably slim-ish, to be able to sneak it into the venues that don't allow it.
Reccomendations?

Answer
I have the newest Sony Cybershot and it's worked beautifully. I got it for around $200 and the clarity of the music is good and the blurriness is better than older Sony models.

I'm looking for a new affordable digital camera. My requirements are that it needs to take great pictures in low light. I'm tired of my pics coming out crappy. Also, it needs to be able to record videos, but I don't care about the quality of the video camera setting, just as long as it doesn't suck.

Price range less than 200, preferably closer to 100 than 200.

Any advice?

Answer
With your budget you are still looking at a P&S camera of some type. The best low light camera is the Nikon D3s, but costs about $5,300 body only.

Look for a P&S camera that uses the new BSI-CMOS sensor. At this time, it has the best performance in low light of other sensors used by P&S cameras

1.Canon Vixia HV30

How do professional cameramen film in low light so well?

Teh Tarik

I've just bought a Kogan video camera (new Australian brand, not well known) that from my limited experience of camcorders is somewhere in the middle of the video camera spectrum (definitely not lousy, but nothing special either) and I"ve tried several times filming in a dark room with Night mode with very poor results. I can't actually tell the difference between normal and Night mode.

Do you have experience with video cameras that film well in low light? I made a bit of money recently and considering doing a trade-in somewhere.

Answer
Hi Steph:

Let's boil down this whole discussion into two things:
1) Your AU$399 (~USD$425) Kogan camcorder (which tells us your original budget range). That's no where near the "middle" of the $50 - $100,000 USD video camera spectrum.
2) The phrase "how do professional cameramen film... so well?"

It all boils down to spending good money for good equipment. The professional camera crews use equipment that costs thousands more than what you have now, plus --if you are not talking just InfraRed shooting in total or near-total darkness-- their cameras have multiple gain-boost settings for low light.

If you are trying to compare home camcorder footage of any kind with professional broadcast TV shows, just stop it. Their gear is way more advanced, plus (as others have mentioned) they also have post-production signal processors to help boost image parameters and quality.

The pro's also have access to "image intensifiers" they mount between their lens and camcorder (or on the front lens in cheaper cameras), like the AstroScope, which for around $6,000 USD will work for even a consumer camcorder or SLR. These can create an image using only starlight from the sky.

Your Kogan brand is not highly rated in picture quality to start with (see CNet Australia's review: http://www.cnet.com.au/kogan-full-hd-1080p-video-camcorder-camera-339293191.htm ). If you happen to have a more-expensive Kogan model, I apologize, but not much. A not-well-known brand that's in Australian K-Marts says a lot in itself. If you do trade-up, go for a name brand that's done this for awhile & has a track record for image quality as well as construction quality.

If you really have an interest in "Ghost Hunters" style IR shooting and not just poorly-lit parties, get a good used Sony Handycam that has true Sony "NightShot" features (the older consumer NightShot models could also "see" through certain garments, so Sony crippled newer Handycams' IR features).

The professional IR camera crews also use "bright" (but invisible to the eye) InfraRed spotlights mounted on the camera tops.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.
