Why would students behave better if there would be video cameras in a classroom?

There is nothing more compelling than video to use for evidence.I agree with video in the classroom, it would at least level the playing field. It is not unusual to see video on You Tube of a teacher allegedly acting out in class and some student just happened to have a phone to record the entire event . I remember watching one video clip where a teacher was being kicked on the floor of her classroom and no one was trying to stop the attack or no one seemed to be getting any help. However there was no shortage of camera phones taping this .Everyone who videotaped this attack should have been charged as accessories..However I believe many of these episodes have been set up by the students since these same videos seldom if ever show what actually happened prior to this "spontaneous outbursts" from the teacher.I think both parents and students should be notified that videos will be taken in the classroom, hallways and other rooms within the school with the exception of washrooms.Video in the school would put everyone, both staff and students on notice that they should be exercising their best behaviour and judgement at all times. We have video in the exterior and/or the interior of stores, banks, public and private buildings, subways etc. Students don't seem to have any accountability when it comes to making false allegations and sometimes a video would be helpful when seeking the truth. The camera can also catch what the eye may not see, when the back is turned.Video would also help to eliminate some bully since most bullies use the silence of their victim to continue their reign of terror.Cameras won't eliminate all bad behaviour but I think it would allow parents to see the true colours of their child when out of their sight. If video evidence is allowed in court why not in the school.

What are the benefits of having a video camera to use in the classroom?

I teach first grade at a rural school in Alabama. I want to purchase a video camera so I can record experiments, plays, and learning that is taking place in the classroom. The recordings will then be transferred to the school website for the community to see or to a DVD for students and parents to enjoy. I have to write a GREAT proposal to get the camera. What are other benefits of having a video camera for classroom use? Thanks!

Answer
This is great for both you and the students. When recording students' plays, upon review the students will be able to monitor their fluency/expression/prosody and then improve it. Repeated performances and viewings will show growth.

Invite local community officials and leaders in to speak to the children and record it. Use this as a model for students to develop a short minute speech about a topic. Record it. Show it back to them. The possibilities are endless.

For science simply tape different environments and have students make observations, compare/ contrast.

As you know already, this benefits you as well. Although all teachers have built in with-it-ness, things still go unnoticed. You will be able to assess students long after the moment has already played out. Also, you will improve by critiquing yourself and delivery to your students.

Good Luck!
