How do I reduce the distortion when I record a live concert on my camera?

M.P.

I need your help and im confused. So everytime I record a live rock concert with my digital camera, the music or noise comes out very distorted, like you can't make out the music or lyrics. I see other live concert vids on youtube and you hear the music just fine. Its frustrating cause usually I'm close to the very front with awesome view of the stage/singers but the music quality is all jacked. Is it because my camera is cheap? Do I need to record in video HD? Do I need expensive editing software? Thanks.

Answer
The poor sound quality has to do with two things

1) Over modulation due to the proximity of the amplified sound to you and your camera
2) The very, very inexpensive internal microphone in your camera

There is NO kind of recovery from this poor quality sound.

The sound you are hearing on most YouTube videos was recorded using a high-end video camera with a high quality microphone which is either part of the camera or external and held in the air with a mic boom of some type, aimed at the band.

Here is a link to such a camera

What is a good digital video camera for recording loud live music?

Timpala

I currently have a Sony Mini DV camera that shoots good enough video when shooting my band, but the sound sucks. My Sony point & shoot digital camera sounds better. I want a small camera with a good size hard drive that records really good sound for loud live rock & roll. Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Timpala,

The best option,in my opinion, would be a camcorder with a
external microphone. I understand that's not ideal at concerts.
So,maybe these links are helpfull for you :

Searching the net, I stumbled upon this again and again.
It's a unknown brand to me but it seems to have good
sound quality (mind it has a resolution of only 640x480) :
