Good Camera To Record Drums?

Q. Can someone give me a link or something for a cam corder that would record a drum kit nicely, my camera is 7 megapixels, its not enough, any ideas? :)

Answer
Video resolution is measured using horizontal lines of video. 480 is standard definition TV. Anything above this is "high definition" - generally 720 or 1080. Anything below this is very compressed and likely poor quality - generally the case with digital still cameras that happen to capture video as a convenience.

To successfully record drums, you will need to have some sort of audio control. For the most part, the camcorder's built-in automatic mic gain control is overwhelmed by loud audio that results in very muddge sounde being recorded - and many time "static" which is actually the audio "peaking".

Hard drive camcorders do not handle prolonged, loud, vibration. The recording heads on the hard drive will park in an effort to save the platters. The camcorder's buffere will fill and you will get a "buffer overflow" error message - and no video recorded. They also have a problem in high altitude - and a few more problems that probably won't impact you.

MiniDV tape and flash memory camcorders do not suffer from these issues. So...

1) Establish a budget.
2) Identify what camcorders fall into your budget that meet the above criteria.

Some Sony entry level consumer camcorders have a very rudimentary "Normal" and "Low" mic gain setting that is accessed from the camcorder's menu. In the camcorder manual, look for "MicRefLevel".

Some Canon entry level consumer camcorders have a very rudimentary "Off" and "On" mic attenuator setting that is accessed from the camcorder's menu. In the camcorder manual, look for "Attenuator".

The Canon HV40 is the least expensive camcorder with a 10-12 step manual audio control available through the menu.

And turn on the lights when you record your playing. There are no consumer camcorders under about $1,300 that can handle low light well - the lenses and imaging chips are too small...
