Will this cable run video from my Nikon DSLR to my 2011 iMac for live video tethering to Final Cut Pro?

weird numb

Hi guys,
I am looking to do a political commentary/news show in my room. I have a Nikon D7000 camera and want to live record into my computer from the camera. Is this possible? I want to record into Final Cut, because that will ultimately be where everything is edited anyways. It just takes steps out of the way for me.

Will this cable run video from my Nikon DSLR to my 2011 iMac for live video tethering to Final Cut Pro?

And also, I will be getting a mic for the camera. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Rob

Answer
No. That DisplayPort connection feeds video OUT from the Mac to another monitor.

Read the camcorder manual
http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/kie88335f7869dfuejdl=-cww2/D7000_EN.pdf
Page 179. The USB "tether" is for transferring still image or video files - not streaming video. It can be used to *view* the still image about to be captured - but no video capture.

Go to Page 193 to understand how high definition video can be done - basically, this would be connecting the camera's HDMI port to an interface box (see Blackmagic Design or Grass Valley) which connects to the Mac's Thunderbolt port.

While we are here, read the overheating warning on page 54 when capturing video (the time to overheat and auto shut down is around 20 minutes continuous recording - and it takes about that long to cool down enough to use the camera again. Also, consider getting an XLR adapter so decent mics - which use XLR connectors not a dinky 3.5mm connector. But at least you are planning ahead to use an external mic so camera-noise is not recorded (page 57). And we hope that file maximum length (page 58) limit is not a problem for you.

Basically, if you got your $1000 still image capture device primarily for video, you got the wrong tool for the job - this does not mean it can't capture decent video, it can, but you are now saddled with workarounds that could have been avoided if a camcorder - designed for video capture - is used.

There is no single best mic. Watch broadcast news on TV. Sometimes a shotgun mic is used - or a clip-on (lavaliere) or a handheld dynamic mic. Better mics use an XLR connector, not a dinky 3.5mm connection.

which camera takes good photos and videos like these?

I'm looking for an awesome camera(DSLR/SLR) that's under $800 and takes amazing photos like this
pic:http://studiobportraits.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Professional-head-shot-of-beautiful-high-school-senior-pictures-at-Studio-B-Portraits.jpg

i know that the pic was edited but im a pro at photoshop so that shouldnt be a problem. I'm just looking for a camera best for personal/ family photoshoots for a trip that i'm going on for 6 months.

and can record a video that is clear like this

or anything close?

I was looking at a Nikon d3100 but i wasnt sure if it did a good job which is why i'm asking.
Thanks in adavance! :)

Answer
Any DSLR would be good and will take photos like those. The D3100 is a great entry-level camera and is capable of shooting excellent quality clear and crisp shots. I'd say go with it and invest in some good lenses because that's what matters more. I suggest you read this user review to help you in making a decision:

http://www.amazon.com/review/RQMA3E4E109LS/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B003ZYF3LO&nodeID=&linkCode=&sourceid=md.ds&tag=famavca-20

You can get a good deal for it on here:

And since you seem to be interested in taking portraits mainly, the lens i'd suggest for you is this one:

And the best most inexpensive travel lens is this one:
