i took a photography course in school this year and we learned a little bit about recording videos and editing them but not as much as i was hoping because it was mostly about photography. i was wondering if anyone had any tips or tricks or things i should know when recording videos with the canon rebel t3.

Here is a few tricks.
Shooting good video takes some time and skill.
These tips I do should help you.
1. Set you camera to M or Manual.
2. Set the Shutter Speed to 1/40-1/50.
3. Set your Aperture to the fastest setting. (f/3.5-5.6 or something)
4. Set your ISO to 100-1600.
That should help you.
It will reduce the grain of the video and stuff.
Also turn the Picture Style to 100% flat.
The Picture Style is your Contrast and Saturation.
Also turn your sharping all the way down.
A flat image is way better to edit.
You will need to learn to shoot moving video well.
Make a few jibs and stuff.
If you have the money you could buy them.
Moving and panning video is what really stands out.
Just having the camera on the tripod is just boring.

I think I've fallen to the Canon side so what is the best model to buy and what lenses should I be buying as well? This will be used mainly for videos and I would like to be able to edit on my Macbook so the camera needs to be compatible with my computer and easy to get onto it. I've read that the lens kits that come with them are not the best and that the said lenses are heavy? Are there any other starter lenses you would recommend that would cover all my bases until I can learn to stand on my own two feet?

Video quality is similar to something like a Flip camera (passable, not great) but the sound is pretty good. You can get one for under $300 if you look around.

Yes... Different video editors handle it differently. For example, in Apple iMovieHD, you "extract" the audio, then drag the audio to the desktop. It will be in lossless AIFF format.. Then, using something like Audacity, import the AIFF, edit it (typicall the start and end) and export as a MP3 file... But you did not tell us which computer, operating system, video editor or audio application you want to use.
