Best camera to record my Dancing?

Junior

I'm Looking for a camcorder thats Pretty much High Detailed enough to record my Dance covers, and etc. Any Suggestions?

Answer
"Best" and no budget? Nice.

I'd probably do something like a 3-camera set-up using three Sony HVR-Z7 camcorders. The accessories, lights, steadying devices, mics, audio recording subsystem, headset communications system, video mixer and other stuff would make for a nice portable studio and come in at around $100,000.

If that is too much, then two Sony HDR-FX1000, good tripod and accessories for around $8,000.

If that is too much, then a Canon HV40, good tripod and accessories for around $1,800.

Anything less than this and you are forced to use high compression consumer grade AVCHD which can cause problems because high compression video and fast action don't get along too well. It *might* be "good enough" for your needs. But if this is the budget, then Something from the Canon HF M series. And I hope your computer does not need upgrading to deal with the AVCHD video.

What is a good video camera for v-logs/dances?

:O

I am part of a dancing group and I am in need for a camera. I'm looking for a camera with good zoom, lighting, audio recording, and video quality.... also it wouldn't hurt if it was cheap...

Answer
Consumer level HD camcorders have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer level HD camcorders all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video. Consumer level HD camcorders interpolate the video. This means they take one frame, make up the next 4 or 5 frames, take a frame and repeat this, over and over, for the remainder of the video, every video it takes is like this. With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 seconds or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You will need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer. To say this is not HD, think about this. It would cost in excess of $3500 to get a HD camcorder that could equal the video Quality of a $250 Canon MiniDV tape camcorder.

Answer
I just bought a casio exilim EX-Z75 with 7.2 megapixels about a week 1/2 ago. I have owned several different camera brands, and I can honestly tell you that there is nothing like the casio exilim. Especially if you are looking for pictures without blurriness, you have made the right choice. It has like a million different modes and settings, including different color modes (like black and white, sepia, red, green, blue, purple, pink, etc.), picture modes (even has an ebay mode!), it has modes for recording, menu modes (it has an easy menu mode). And best of all it has an antishake mode, to reduce blurriness in the pictures. The camera is extremely sleek and stylish, you can get it in different colors which is cool. It is easy to take anywhere. The battery lasts FOREVER, although it's a li-ion rechargeable battery not AA. It has 3x optical zoom. The LCD screen is huge, and it's very easy to use camera, one of the easiest to use in the market. It uses SD memory card. It has many different flash modes(including auto flash, where the camera chooses itself what type of flah it will use or if the picture requires any flash at all) , and it has different flash intensity modes.

And not to mention, the pictures are amazing.

Luck purchasing

What is a good digital camera that records videos with sound?

blankslate

I want to get into photography and I also love recording videos (with good sound.) My last digital camera...L200 samsung sucked huge mexican balls...it barely had any sound. Anyway, I want one of those really cool looking cameras like these :

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40/images/D3S_2078-600.jpg

I know nothing about cameras at all..to be honest. But I need something that can also record videos pretty well..
thank you.

Answer
There are lots of great cameras out there and they are becoming really cool I know that Canon has a few cameras that take great pictures but also record Full HD video which is really cool. I prefer Canon because of there prices and quality, similar companies are just as good but more expensive heres an example. The Canon T1i Shoots full HD video and has a 15 megapixels which is awesome their websites suggested retail price is 900$. Nikons comparable camera is the D90 which is only 12 megapixels and its video mode is HD but it shoots 720p which is not full HD like the Canon which Shoots 1080i, which is full HD and the Nikon is 1300$. So for a much better camera the Canon wins with more megapixles and Full HD video and A better price tag! Hope this helps here are the links for price and specs on both

I want to buy a camcorder by which. I can shoot 2 Hrs Meetings?

vinod jame

I want to buy a camcorder by which. I can shoot 2 Hrs Meetings. I want sound clarity and maximum zoom Can any one suggest which company I should go and which model no. i should purchase that not cost to much on my pocket
which one is better the hard disk one or DVD on or CD one Please suggest

Answer
if you want continuous shooting with no breaks to change media, then HDD or DVcam would be the best choices for format. Camcorders do not use DVD, they use miniDVD which does not record for 2 hours, but more like 40 minutes. DVcam has a 3 hour tape available and has excellent uncompressed digital audio tracks. DVcam is made by Sony. HDD is produced by JVC, Sony, and Canon. You should expect to pay over $1000 for these models.

if you are willing to change media during the meetings, then you can look at lesser expense. miniDV offers near DVcam quality but on a 1 hour tape. there are some very inexpensive SD card recorders, but they usually have poor quality lens systems.

if it is possible to set up a computer at these meetings, then a simple video camera with video capture card will allow the computer to act as a recorder. a 2 hour meeting will consume 24 GB of memory so you need plenty of free space on the hard drive. this option will also be the easiest to burn DVD copies for the participants afterwards.

I was wondering if there was a way to video tape your computer screen like you can screentshot it?

kayla ;D

like not with a video camera just like using the print screen button or something.

Answer
There are probably a number of products which support this but the one I know of is "GoToMeeting". It is used to have online meetings and the organizer can record the session including audio. You can get a free trial of this at gotomeeting.com. Doesn't have to be a meeting. You could set up a meeting and then record the session with only you logged in.

is there a good HD camera for recording video under 400?

Im looking for a full hd camera or video recording i am using it mainly to record break dancing
so the hd video has to be good and something that records slow motion would be a plus..
i looked at the canon elph 500 but found out it only records slo mo for 30 seconds

is there a good hd camera for recording motion that has a slo mo option? (ive seen good vids of flowers and crap but recording dancing or sports is diff from rec a flower lol)

Answer
Panasonic HDC TM80K is compact, light and, most importantly, records great HD videos and digital photos. It features an unbelievably clear night recording under very low light conditions, perfect daylight recording and fantastic shake-free zoom capabilities. The unit's functions are very easy to understand and to use. The transfer between the unit and my Mac Book Pro was seamless, using IMovie program.

What is the best durable video camera for sports under 500$?

Jason

I ski, play lacrosse, skateboard, and mountain bike. I already own a gopro and that is great for first person but I need something that someone else can use to film me. Price isn't really that much of an issue but i don't want to drop 1000 bucks on something that will likely get damaged while filming.

Answer
HD Camcorders, that being any Camcorder that does not use MiniDV tape for Video Storage and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

DSLR Cameras, all Makes, all Models, all have the same problem when video taping some long videos, all overheat at the 13 to 18 minute mark, depending on the Make and Model. This is unavoidable, it all has to with the fact, video is an afterthought in DSLR camera production.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes â four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

What's a good camera for recording music (specifically drums)?

Mike

I need a good camera for recording myself playing drums, but that has good sound quality. I've tried a few cameras, and if there's any other drummers out there, you'll know what I mean by getting a fuzzy sound every time I hit my crash and bass. Anyone know any good cameras for recording drum tracks?

Answer
Without a doubt the answer is the Zoom Q3 Handy Video Recorder. Their motto is "Audio Makes the Video." All the emphasis is on audio quality, not video quality. While the video is still good, the audio is awesome, recording stereo sound (great for drums) at 44.1Khz or 48KHz. According to their site: "Audio formats with video include 44.1/48kHz 16/24-bit Linear PCM WAV or MP3 up to 320kbps"

It's what this camera was made for. Check it out here: http://www.homebrewaudio.com/zoom-q3

Need a good camera for recording drums live?

Nicholas

Looking for a decent priced camera for recording drums live. Something that doesn't cost to much but gets the job done. Need it to record music primarily so it needs a good mic. thanks

Answer
Your requirement should read:

"Need it to record LOUD music primarily"

Which ever video capture device you get needs to have manual audio gain control.

At the low end, in consumer cams, this is usually a mic attenuator selection in the camcorder's menu. Normal for regular levels, On for loud audio. With these, lenses are small along with small imaging chips resulting in poor low light behavior. Spend a little on the camcorder, spend more on lighting.

Move up the food chain and the control gets more granular. 10-12 steps, again controlled in the menu. Get to prosumers and pro grade and the manual audio control is on the outside of the camcorder. Lenses and imaging chips get larger so low light behavior improves as the price of the camcorder goes up. Spend more on the camcorder, spend a little on lighting.

Step 1: Set a budget. $300, $1,300, $2,300, $3,000 or more? Be sure to include tripod, cables, mics lighting and all that.
Step 2: See what fits. Download the manual from the camcorder manufacturer. Be sure it does hat you need (manual audio gain control).
Step 3: Set your expectations accordingly. Pro grade gear (like your good drums) are not inexpensive.
Step 4: Any camera or camcorder can record decent video when used within its design parameters. Stray from these and expect problems. Be sure your computer can deal with the video files for playback and editing. Check your video editor, too.

If you choose to get a drum mic kit, you will need a mixer to attach them all to the camcorder. Be sure the camcorder has audio input jacks (consumer grade uses 1/8" stereo that can take XLR connections with an XLR adapter (juicedLink - BeachTek); pro grade gear uses XLR connections built-in.

if i record a video with a video camera, how do i upload it to youtube?

Hoz

Answer
What kind of video camera do you have?

If you have dvd type or Hard disk, normally when you upload it to your computer, youtube can open that. You do this by pressing upload, and find the stuff you uploaded from your video camera.

Unless you mini dv tapes. You have to open windows movie maker or any video editing software. Press capture from video device or something similar. On the camera, when you play, rewind until you find the parts you want to transfer to the computer. Then when you press capture from video device, record from camera, etcetera, as different programs say different things.

The upload to youtube is the same, but if you have minidv. You have to wait until the capture has finished and, wait until it's saved on your computer.

Then like with the first paragraph, press upload on youtube, and click the video you just saved on the PC.

Hopefully that helps

*To the user above me, it depends on the camera* With mine, when I've recorded. I have to capture using a video editing software. If it was DVD, or Hard disk where you can transfer, then fine. But if the person had a minidv camera, normally you have to capture using Movie Maker or any video software, because you cant transfer because the information is stored on tapes. So transferring them is harder

Cameras for youtube music videos...?

Prince of

So I used to make solo music videos for youtube using my webcam. But now i've got myself into a band and we want to start making videos together. But we don't want to keep the same bad quality videos as I used to make. Basically we don't know what kind of camera to get. Preferably it would be HD. And obviously it would need to be of decent sound quality. We also are reasonably skint and although we could save for a bit we want to do this quite quickly so we don't want to have to spend to much. Anyone know of anything, thanks :).

Keep Smiling!

Answer
If you already have a digital camcorder (one that captures in Digital8, MiniDV, HDV, or any of the DVD formats), then you're ready to start shooting your masterpiece. Your camcorder will need some kind of direct connection to your computer, either to the USB or FireWire ports or by inserting the DVD you've recorded. Once you've downloaded the video from the camera, you can upload it to YouTube or bring it into an editing program to play with it some more.

If you have an analog camcorder (one that uses VHS, VHS-C, SVHS-C, 8mm, or Hi8 tape), you can still get your videos onto YouTube. It will require an extra step and some additional equipment, though, since these camcorders are not usually equipped with computer connections. You'll need to digitize the video with a converter box, which will convert the analog signal from the camcorder to a digital signal that the computer can understand. After the video has been digitized, you can manipulate it further or upload it. Regards!

What digital cameras record videos in AVI?

I was thinking about Kodak or Panasonic (or any others you know of) but they have to record videos in AVI so I can use them on windows movie maker. I know they can be converted but its bad quality...

Thanks!

Most cameras record in AVI, Canon does for sure. I thought that they all did. If you're looking for a camera that does, the Canon cameras definitely do though, that's not a worry. A good camera for all sorts of photography is the Canon SD1100

video recording camera?????

Coolguy11

For my high school graduation, I wanna get a camera or video recorder or something, that allows you to take pictures (good quality) and put it up on Facebook. Something that also is good for video recording and you could post it up on facebook. Do you know the name of the thing? And where can i buy it?

I wanna buy it cuz so i could tell my friends how I am right now, how i'm doing in college, how the campus looks like, etc. Thanks.

Answer
Nearly any digital camera will do both.

Camcorders do much better for video, but can take still images to the limit of their sensor.

Still digital cameras have much finer sensors, and excellent photo capabilities, but moderate to decent video capabilities.

Most tablets/phones have still/video cameras, and can directly publish to the web.

Webcam or Video Camera for recording/broadcasting live church service on ustream.tv?

Tom

I want a webcam or video camera that will plug into a computer USB port and be able to record and broadcast live using upstream.tv. It will be used from the balcony of a church, about 25 yards from the pastor. Under $100 please. It needs to have good sound quality and good video quality. If there is something you know of that is a little more expensive but worth the price feel free to post it. Thanks!

Answer
Webcams are just not designed to get good video or audio from 25 yards away. They are designed to be used more like 25 inches away! From 25 yards away, the audio will be quiet and echo-ey, and the video will make the pastor look like a flyspeck (or, if you use digital zoom instead of optical zoom, like a checkerboard).

Assuming you already own a camcorder, the solution is to use a video capture device on your computer (such as a Pinnacle Dazzle -- see link below) and the A/V output cable from the camcorder. I'm going to assume that's what you are going to use in the instructions below...

Video: Put the camcorder on a tripod and zoom it in. Now (by using the camcorder's optical zoom) your pastor won't look like a flyspeck or a checkerboard, and the tripod will keep your audience from getting motion sickness. Connect the Dazzle's video input (yellow) to the camcorder's video output (also yellow).

Audio: Sound quality from the camcorder's built-in mic will be somewhat better than the webcam's built-in mic. But for better sound quality, you need an external mic (a shotgun mic would be best type), and still better would be a feed from the church sound system. If you are using the Dazzle unit below, your can tell the church A/V expert that the kind of feed you need is a line-level unbalanced RCA connection with a "y" adapter. Connect the Dazzle's audio inputs (red and white [sometimes red and black]) to either the camcorder's audio output (same colors) or to the church audio feed (whatever the church provides). I would also recommend using headphones to monitor the sound instead of the computer's speakers.

So, assuming you already own a camcorder and tripod, your investment is the A/V capture unit below (list price $80 but street prices from about $50!) and some face time with the church AV person -- and your results will be superior to using a webcam. You will need internet access at the church, but I assume you know that. Good luck!

What would be a good camera to record my church services?

Tim

I am looking for a good camera that I can use to record my Sunday Morning church services. We have elderly member who can't make it to the services any longer, but we would like to record it and send it to them? We're looking for a camera with the price range of $400.00. We need it to be good video quality and sound quality. Also, the precher wears a clip-on microphone. Is there anyway to pick that up clearly. Any help at all would be much appreciated.

Thank you

What is the best action video camera that can take pictures too?

V V

I want to take good quality video of action events - mounts on cars, helmets etc. so that i can sell it to people, also i want the same camera to be able to link to an instant photo printer.

What video camera could do this? I am from South Africa and my budget is +-R10,000 or $1,200 or less. If there is nothing at this range then what is the next most inexpensive one and at how much?

One more thing, it must be able to link up to a computer and store footage/pictures directly on the computer.
Thank you for that reply Vwbe, but I have looked at Drift and Go Pro but this is not good enough quality from the videos i saw when the videos are compared and shown at the same time on YouTube when viewed on even 720HD. It is not smooth enough for my purposes, as there is still a bit of jerkiness that makes it look home "videoey".

What is a really good digital camera or video rocorder?

?

ok, I had a digital sony camera but it broke. I am looking to purchase a new one but i really know very little about this kind of stuff.

This is what im looking for: a camera that has good picture quality, the ability to record home videos, and a rechargable battery. Anyone have any recommendations? Price doesn't really matter. thanks

Also...it may just be better to buy a video recorder with the ability to take pictures. Would it be better to buy seperate devices for video recording and taking pictures?

Answer
Since you will take videos for only home use, then no need for two devices. Therefore, go for Canon EOS Rebel T3. It is a very good entry level DSLR and with very good video quality. Read this review:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R3KMXHSCN3Q2JN/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B004J3Y9U6&nodeID=&linkCode=&sourceid=mh.ds&tag=kefauca-20

This camera allows you to use live screen shooting which so many people like these days and it takes HD video. The video quality is very good at its original size. Check it here:

What is a good camera that zooms far and that can record videos? ?

jrichmine_

I am looking for a camera that zooms far and that can record videos well or visa versa: a camcorder that takes good pictures and has good optical zoom (10-15x). I am going to the mountains in a couple of weeks and I want to take great pictures. My budget is around $275, but I can spend up to $300.

Answer
There is a low cost Canon camcorder that can take so so still pictures and great video, but have not seen digital cameras that can match the video of a camcorder. Have been looking at cameras for some time now and the best information I have is below.

Just saw this camera at Best Buy and think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has an optical viewfinder and uses NiMH rechargeable batteries. Please read as much of the following as you can for other information and help with choosing a camera.
Canon A590IS $134.99 at Best Buy or $116.30 at Amazon.com
http://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...

There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but digital is definitely the way to go. The second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices.

What gives a camera its picture quality? The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.

Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen. Would suggest that you find one that also has an optical view finder because the LCD screen is almost impossible to see in bright sun.

Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. It is more expensive, takes longer to process, and may not be needed unless you are making a really large picture or blowing up a small part of a picture. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches.

The information about my camera is just to show that you don't need the biggest and best. Just know how to use the one you have.
My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Ask what cameras they own, but don't believe everything you hear. Once you select a camera read all about it in the owner's manual. Just learned that my camera has red-eye prevention and correction. It also has adaptive lighting. You may be able to view the owners manual at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

How can I capture live video from a camera into PC at 300 FPS?

Reventon

I have a camcorder and a camera which can be connected to the PC. Is there a software that allows me to capture live video from the camcorder directly into my PC at 300FPS? Adobe Premiere allows 30FPS max.
Thanks.
The reason I need this is because I want to record myself performing a golf swing. The club will be traveling at over 100mph and I will playback the video in ultra slow motion.

Answer
sorry, you're going to need a high speed camera first. consumer cameras don't have the frame rate to do what you want.
check out the link below it's just up your alley as it demonstrates capturing a golf swing... plus it records onto a memory card easily transferable to pc..

Best waterproof camcorder? I am looking for 8MP, HD video and a 60fps mode @ 640?

KTL

Honestly, I don't think this is to much to ask for. I would like a camcorder that is waterproof for sailing and rainy days. If I can dive with it that is a bonus. I could buy a nice camcorder and a big bulky underwater case but that more that I want to deal with. Compact is nice to have, I see some from Sanyo but only 2MP for stills? Really? In a new camera... my phone has a better camera..
I can get 8MP from them but loose high def.
I also want a video capture mode that supports 60fps or better, since I would like to capture and analyze golf swings.
Does ANYONE that knows more about video capture than me know where I can find a this combo of features?
HD video capture with decent recording time >2hrs
8MP stills
60fps or better video capture mode
image stabilization
the greater the zoom the better..
I have also heard bad things about sound capture and would like the ability to use an external mic if possible.

Please advise,...

Thanks.
-Ken

Answer
The best fit would be a Sanyo VPC-E2BL OR VPC-E2W. These meet most of you needs other then no external mic and the battery will only last 70 mins while recording video. Honestly you asking way to much, there aren't that many waterproof cameras, and there are even less that shot hd video, and even less that shoot video at 60 fps.

Answer
While most cameras take video, and some camcorders take photos; to get the best of both, you need both. Have not seen a camera that compares with the video from a camcorder and most camcorders can't take good quality photos. Suggest the least expensive Canon, a ZR900 MiniDV Camcorder ($229 bought today for $169 at Walmart) and the Canon A590IS camera.

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=177&modelid=16206#ModelDetailAct ...
This Canon HV30 Mini DV Camcorder also takes 3.1 MP photos. Other camcorders take about 1 MP photos, but 3.1 MP is great. Click the link above, then Features, then Stunning Digital Photography to see 3.1 Mega Pixel specification. The next link shows best prices.

In new cameras, look for a viewfinder (LCD invisible in bright sun), optical image stabilizer, and check battery prices. High mega pixel settings take longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches. Click links below for more details.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/mpmyth.htm ...

The Canon A590IS is a slightly older model that is available everywhere at great sale prices. Think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has auto focus, a viewfinder, optical image stabilization, and uses rechargeable NiMH batteries.
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/A590IS/A590ISA.HTM ...
http://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...

You may never need expanded wide angle or telephoto capabilities, but the A590 IS is compatible with Canon's accessory lens adapters: A small button next to the lens bezel is actually a latch; press it and you can remove the bezel ring, exposing a bayonet mount for accessory lenses. Canon offers the WC-DC52 0.7x wide-angle lens, the TC-DC52A telephoto lens, the 250D 52mm closeup lens separately, along with the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them on the camera. (Note that the wide, tele, and macro lenses all need the LA-DC52G adapter to mount them to the camera. The lenses won't work by themselves.)

There is no one place to get great buys, but click the second link in the information above then search for your camera of choice at the upper left. Camera prices at this link change often.

What gives a camera its picture quality?
It is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures. Mega pixel resolution is about potential photo size, not picture quality.

There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but the second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

A friend asked me to clean and charge her new 2000mAh Duracell batteries as described in the next link. Those batteries are still going strong after four months of normal use and have not been recharged.
http://www.google.com/base/a/4210404/D13701973093918363271

Most NiMH rechargeable batteries need a recharge when not used after two weeks, but Duracell and RayOVac new formula 2000mAh NiMH batteries hold charge one year. Twelve 2000mAh batteries over five years old are still like new. Higher mAh batteries (one year old) work well in flashlights, but won't start a camera.

CAUTION Do not overcharge! Batteries can be damaged. Use an automatic two or more hour Energizer Compact smart charger with temperature monitor, trickle charge technology, and safety timer ($9.76). Use pre-charged 2000mAh Duracell ($12.97) or RayOVac ($5.97) batteries and a full cycle charge. To preserve battery charge, use the viewfinder.

For longer life, batteries should be charged slowly and stored at cool temperatures and half charge. Avoid full charge and high temperatures or very low charge as both will damage batteries. This link is about prolonging the life of lithium-ion batteries.

This could be the best slim line camera with a viewfinder and ... It's PINK, but it uses a $49.50 Series G Rechargeable 960mAh lithium-ion battery.

CAUTION To prevent memory card corruption, keep batteries charged, format in camera, and don't delete or fill card completely. Wait for lights to stop flashing then turn camera off before removing memory. For card readers, double click Safely Remove Hardware. Select, then click Stop and OK.

Lots of great camera tips in this link.
http://www.danscamera.com/Learning/going_digital/#resolution ...

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7 x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Once you select a camera, read all about it in the owner's manual. Check the camera maker's site or view owner's manuals at this link. You will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+ca

What's the best digital video/photography camera?

Lamia Dela

Hey guys, I want a good digital camera that does amazing quality videos (for short movies) that I will edit on final cut pro later and good quality still images. Do you know what brand is the BEST? Like, amazing quality?

Answer
This a common question and i always suggest Canon EOS Rebel T3i.
Why? simply because you have full HD video, Ability to articulate LCD screen and Digital zoom :)

I found this review of a person who is using this camera to record videos:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R3PXVNJV03XQEH/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B004J3V90Y&nodeID=&linkCode=&sourceid=mh.ds&tag=kefauca-20

As you can see, the T3i definitely delivers in picture quality and video. Its Live Mode is great for videos and can help when composing shoots from various angles.

I found also that you can get it at a good price from here:

video recording camera?????

What is a good video camera for a movie at night?

Q. My friends and I are going to make a horror movie for a movie class and we are wondering what to get. we want something that records and recods good quality in the dark and in the woods.

Side question: How do actual movie companies make action scenes in the dark? i know you have to have lighting but is there a special camera to do that?

Side side question: since we will be in the woods the camera needs to not pick up wind. any ideas?
for the budget, how about under a $100? ha ha i know that's not gonna get me much but still, maybe under $250 would be better.

also its not a filming class, its reel history where we watch movies and learn from them and then there is a movie at the end of the semester, he taught us how to screen write but that's all
i did some research off of what you said and do you think this would be good and what adapters and cameras do you need for it?

Answer
So you're in film class and you had to ask your two side questions? What are they teaching you?

Side question 1: There are a number of ways to achieve footage at night depending on the shot you're looking for. If you can work light into your shot, then obviously using light rigs is going to be the way to go. Another angle if you don't mind a limited distance in your shot is to have a light on your camera. A light ring will give you even spread, an LED cluster will give you shadows.

A camera with IR (night vision) capabilities is also an option if you can work that into your film. A camera with a large CMOS sensor will give you better footage at night without the assistance of much/any extra lighting, if you go this route you're looking for something with a 3 or lower lux rating. And lastly you can skip all the low light stuff, film in good lighting making use of shadows, then lower the saturation and add a few filters in post.

Side question 2: Audio wise you're not going to be using the inbuilt camera mic if you're after quality audio. You need an external microphone, a wind barrier (deadcat) and a way to record the audio. The zoom h1n is a reasonably cheap external recorder that might suit your needs. There are some great reasonably priced shotgun mics available as well, look for something like the Azden SMX-10

To your main question: This really depends on your budget. If you're working in low light conditions, as I say a lux rating of 3 or lower is essential, the lower you can get it the better the low light performance, same goes for the CMOS sensor, the bigger you get that, the better the low light performance. If you want a recommendation as to specific camera though, you need to give me a budget to work within, cameras cost anywhere between a few hundred dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

how do I record at night on my samsung 1920x1080 video camera?

Q.

Answer
By turning on some lights so the camcorder (and you) can see. Or use a video light or a flash light - I used a bike light until I could afford a video light).

Does my Digital Concepts 87690 7.1 Megapixel Digital Still Camera record sound in its videos?

Katelyn

I don't see a microphone anywhere on my camera, so I feel sort of foolish asking this question. But at the same time, my dad had a regular digital camera (not a camcorder; it was for taking pictures) and his videos, even though they played nothing on his actual camera, played sound on our computer. I got this Digital Concepts camera for Christmas. I've only taken 2 videos: 1 of my friends dancing to a goofy song at our prom this year, and 1 today of my band playing Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance;" an arrangement written by one of my close friends who plays clarinet in our band. I told my band instructor that I'd post the video to Facebook and I need it for a school project, but when I downloaded it to my computer, I couldn't hear anything even after I turned all the volume settings on my computer all the way up. I really need this video to work. So does my camera record sound? Or am I wasting a lot of time? And if it does record, could anyone help me figure out how to get it to work? Thanks!

Answer
Whenever I have a question/problem such as yours, I read the user's guide (aka "the manual").
It is amazing just how much I always learn from that.

If that doesn't help (or if I'm interested in a product I don't own), I check the manufacturer's website.
They have descriptions and specs for their gadgets, often have user forums, and the decent manufacturers all let you download the manuals in electronic form (so losing the book is no longer a problem).

99% of the time that does the trick.

I'm not sure how much luck you'll have with something called "digital concepts" finding a web site, but I'll cross fingers for you.

Perhaps next time you'll consider buying a brand name, instead - much better product and support.

A $250 Camera with good recording (for tennis)?

3993robert

Hi, as I dont have one now I'd like to buy a digital camera (either compact or megazoom is both okey)

Apart from taking pictures, one very important features for me is great 720 recording (i dont need 1080) so that I could record my tennis practice and then slow-mo it. Could you please give me some recommendations? Thank you in advance.

Answer
Although most contributors on this site would recommend a DSLR (digital single lens reflex that accepts interchangeable lenses. Your budget no where nears the amount needed. it is for that reason I suggest you look at Canon cameras known by photographers as "bridge" cameras. These cameras do not accept interchangeable lenses but have excellent zoom lenses which can effectively give you enough range to satisfy your tennis requirements. My first suggestion is the Canon Powershot SX30 IS or the Canon Powershot SX20 IS. Both are discontinued. The Canon Powershot Sx20 IS is an upgrade to the previous model and the upgrade is primarily "video" enhancement.
Fuji is also another maker I would recommend and probably falls into your price range better. It is the S2950 available on Amazon in your price range. Don't let people on this forum dissuade you from Fuji. I have had personal experience and found they back their cameras 100% better than the likes of a Sony!

Would you recommend a bridge camera?

Em22

As part of my gap year I am going to South Africa next year for a conservation project. I really like taking photos however the only camera I've ever had is a 6MP compact Olympus camera. It's very easy to use and it still functions perfectly well, but I would like something slightly better for taking photos of the animals in Africa. As I am raising money to go on the project, I don't think I could afford a DSLR (and to be honest, I don't know much about camera types) but I've read that a bridge camera makes a good compromise and is more portable. I've found a good deal (at least I think it is) for a bridge camera - a Nikon L810 (16MP and 26x zoom) @ £139.99. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Bridge cameras are a good choice of camera for many people. While dSLR cameras (and the actual lenses used) are optically better than a bridge camera and have much faster performance, bridge cameras are appealing to many people due to their cheaper all-in one price, their smaller/more lightweight size and their long telephoto zoom lens....and for places like Africa, you'll certainly appreciate a long lens.

A bridge camera is the same (optically) as a compact/point and shoot camera due to their very small image sensor. This also depends on the particular brand/model/processor of camera as not all brands/models are the same. Some are definitely better than others. So, due to the small sensor, don't expect amazing image quality/great ISO capability, particularly in lower light...or at the long end of the lens. They have a much longer zoom lens (24x, 30x optical, etc) so may also be referred to as a superzoom camera. Even though they have IS (image stabilization) you still need to be very careful handholding them at the long end...it's not easy to hold them steady enough, so mounting them on a tripod (with IS turned off) might be a good option. They also have full manual controls (a number of compact cameras also have these) which allows you to set your shutter speed and or aperture if you wish to.

Forget about the Nikon L810. It's NOT a bridge camera. It's a budget superzoom camera, nothing more. It doesn't have full manual controls, so is fully point and shoot. And, the image quality it produces matches it's ultra cheap price. So, I would avoid it if I were you.

Some good bridge cameras are...
Canon Powershot SX40 HS...approx. £270 (Amazon.uk)
Canon Powershot SX50 HS...approx. £385 (Amazon.uk)
Panasonic FZ150...approx. £330 (Amazon.uk)
Panasonic FZ200...approx. £439 (Amazon.uk)

There are many other bridge cameras available, so you may need to do some research for yourself. The above four would be on my short list because Canon is usually always a good choice (optically and processor wise). The Panasonics rate highly and have super fast AF and allow full manual control over aperture etc. while recording video. This link might give you some ideas...

Nikon Coolpix P100 Video Camera?

Madison<3

About the video camera, I was wondering...can i stop the video that i'm recording and then continue it later?

Answer
The P100 isn't a video camera. It's a bridge camera. It's main use is for still photos. But I'm sure if you stop a video you can continue later.
I have the P90. It is limited to filming videos of only 25 minutes long. I'd suggest another camera if your main use will be shooting videos.

Need help figuring out to record a video at night?

NONAME

So I have a Canon PowerShot S5 IS. I'm going out racoon hunting with some of my friends and I want to record it. But I can't figure out how to do it. Can you even record with it at night at all?? Please Help

Answer
You have a nice P&S camera which happens to have a video feature.

To shoot at night, you will need an actual video camera with an IR feature built-in

Some of the Sony camcorders have that feature.

My guess is you have NO lighting except that of the moon and even a 0 lux video camera cannot record under those conditions.

Jim is totally correct. You need light to expose video, digital sensors or film

how do u make a digital camera have flash while recording a video at night?

SelenaGome

i want to take a video at night in the dark but i dont know how to make it have flash or light while taking the video my camera is polaroid and its digital

Answer
It is not practical to do that.

Flash is only for still pictures, meaning 1 press of the shutter 1 flash, 1 picture, this is called 1 frame. This has to sync with your camera or you don't get a picture. Some cameras can give you a few flashes continuous but this is never used for video.

video needs continuous source of light because video shoots anywhere from 30 frames down to a few frames per second, also depends if your camera has capability to adjust frames per second for video.

For example surveillance camera systems shoot from 1 to 30 frames per second, they are usually set 2 or 5 frames to save on storage space.

flash also needs to recharge between use, usually takes a few seconds for flash to charge up and give that tremendous burst of light for that 1 picture. Better models can recycle the flash faster, it also discharges your batteries really fast.

Buy DSLR or not... video conundrum?

airdogspac

I had a SLR camera back in 2003-2005 around that time... it was just a basic one. I took a photography class in college and even developed my own film and so forth. I sold it in 2005 and bought a little more advance point and shoot camera but it still allowed me to control shutter speed and so forth.

its not 2013 and my 5 mpx Camera is just to old. I thought when I got a new cell phone with a 8mpx camera I would need camera really any more. But my Nexus 4 camera, is fine, but not really what you use to take pictures.

The problem is as my camera got older I started to use it less and less.

I thought of buying a new camera. I liked some of the features of the Nikon D5200. But I have a hard time justifying spending that much on a camera I might not use much.

I also wanted the camera to take good video.

I bought a refurbished canon HD Camcorder a couple of years ago. It works fine, bought a bigger battery and so forth. I thought of selling this (for around $200) to justify buying the D5200. I just don't know if the D5200 is going to have as good of video. I know it won't be able to record video for as long... (I don't know if I can by an extended battery for the D5200, I guess just buy two batteries).

What to do?
I guess I can't edit it... the point and shoot camera I bought was a Digital one.

Answer
nikons are horrible for taking professional quality videos, it keep resetting itself to auto and the ISO indicated is always wrong. If you want a great DSLR ill go for the canon D500 or D550 the D600 is also nice but I dont think its totally worth the price it has the exact same video quality as the D550. I am currently in film school and DSLR takes about the same quality videos then the film school's professional camera's that cost ten times as much the only difference the DSLR is a bit more tricky when working depth of veld.

I can't tell you much of the still images, as i am more into the film part then the actual photography. but i am desperately saving up to buy my own DSLR,

Is the Nikon Coolpix L810 6.1 Camera good for filming beauty videos on youtube?

Alyssa

i just started a channel, and im aiming to make videos like macbarbie07, stiliababs09, and jordynismyname, i started using the flip sony hd bloggie camera but it SUCKS. let me know about the nikon coolpix L810 16.1 camera :) and is vegas pro 8 a good editor to use, i own a windows computer! thanks to whoever answers (:

Answer
No, if you are serious about quality. As you didn't like Bloggie, you would mostly likely not like L810 too.
Most of us know that most compact cameras, or smart-phones like iPhones, are not good at video recording. If light is good, they do an okay job. When light is dull, they are almost unusable. Same is true for most consumer SLR cameras with kit lenses. So what do we do to take high quality High-Definition videos? Should we use an HD camcoder or a pocket camcorder like Sony Bloggie or UltraHD?
Most compact cameras don't do a good job in low light- for still images or for videos. If you zoom in, the shake becomes too obvious. Most DSLRs will do a little better as light level goes down but many of them will not auto focus during videos (because of the mirror which needs to be flipped for focusing). You can bypass this with a mirrorless camera which can auto focus, like Panasonic G or GF series but with Auto focus, you lose the control over which part of the frame, or on which person to focus on. If you have 3 persons in a frame, your Auto-Focus will not know which one you want to focus on. Why not? Silly, it is Auto-focus! It focuses by itself!! That is the reason you never see a professional movie or videos done with Autofocus.

what's the advantage of video recording between digi cams and regular cameras ?

epic_laydo

some good cameras take movies, and some digi cams take still photos....might bea dumb question but what should you buy if you like doing both? what are the advantages of digi cams for video over the regular cameras? Thanks!

Answer
i take that you mean "digi cams" as in digital still cameras, and "regular cameras" as in video cameras (camcorders).

although they can do the function of each other, a good still camera will still take better pics than a good camcorder, and vice versa. this is because they are dedicated to do that, and the still or video functions on the side are just there to attract people to buy it. so if you really like doing both digital still photography and shooting video (preferably making movies), then get two cameras: a still one, and a video one. hope this helps!

What's a good camera for recording video and taking pictures?

I want a fancy camera that isn't over $600. I want it to be digital and have an amazing zoom and close up picture ability. I also want it to be able to record video too.

Answer
With that price your fancy camera could actually become one of the digital SLR cameras.

One is $40 above your budget but real great is Nikon D3000

Best Digital Camera for Video Recording?

Don't Look

Hi!! :P

I bought a Kodak EasyShare M1093 Digital Camera, and I dropped it from 3 feet and it broke. The camera is really cheap, so I have to buy another one. My question is, can you please tell me a durable made digital camera that takes high quality video and pictures? My budget is no more than $300. I tried to search on google, but most cameras have bad reviews and its really frustrating. Thanks for answering ;)

Answer
I recommend going with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3. It has amazing photo quality and also some of these other features:

-3" inch LCD
-12x optical zoom
-HD movie capture (You should probably get at least an 8GB SD card for recording video)

It has received an excellent review from CNET, a gadget reviewing website. Here is the link to the review:
http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/panasonic-lumix-dmc-zs3/4505-6501_7-33543456.html?tag=mncol;lst

The price on Amazon is $280 and it is a very good deal. Here is the link:

If you have any other questions, email me and I'll try to get back to you. Hope this helps!

How do I set my Sony video camera so that it doesn't make photos of a video after I record the video?

Q. I have a HDR-PJ580 sony video camera. What I do is that I record a video just in the normal manner. But then after I finish recording and go to the visual index to view the video, there are all these photos of the video! I'm guessing that the photos are taken at every major change in the scene of the video since there are different amount of photos for each video and all the videos are approximately 90 minutes. I have pretty much searched all the preferences and but I can't figure out why it's doing that! And I'm not pressing the photo-taking button while I'm recording or anything...

Answer
Hi Bryan:

Those "photos" you see in the visual index are actually "thumbnails" (reduced-size images) automatically created by the camera system to allow browsing of an Event (Sony's term for how it stores your stuff). Digital videos are stored as files, and various operating systems (including the one that runs your Handycam) have "file size limits" of either 2Gb or 4Gb, so a 90-minute video will actually be a sequence of connected files, each with one or more thumbnails attached to it.

There are two ways to browse or select the stuff you record on your Handycam '580: Event View and Map View, and you might find one more useful than the other. But as to how many thumbnails are created, I don't think you have any choice or control over that.

Here's the online version of Sony's Handycam User Guide for the series you have: http://esupport.sony.com/docs/dvimag/HDR-CX250_CX260V_CX580V_PJ260_PJ260V_PJ580_PJ580V_PJ600_PJ600V_XR260V_guide/eng/index.html

hope this helps,

Advice about neighbors children?

Micha

They have always been obnoxious pieces of crap, but over the last six months I have really decided I want to take some sort of action against them. There are 3 boys between 12-15 and are totally unsupervised despite the fact that their mother is home 24/7. The last six months of my pregnancy I was called slag, whore, slut, as well as other much more foul names. I was told that I love @#$% and was asked by the oldest one if I wanted to perform a sex act on him. (My words not his). I've talked to the parents but not only did they do nothing, they called me racist (they're Muslim) and claimed I'm making up lies to run them out of the neighborhood. I called the police after the 12 year old spit at me while I was putting my daughter in the car, and again last month when I caught the 15 year old peeping into my bedroom window. The second time the police were contacted the father came over and pounded on my door threatening me, and so I called the police again. For some reason NOTHING gets done even by the police. My husband has been away for the last seven months for work and for some reason, the harassment has become worse. What should I do? I'm one step away from hiring a bunch of 15 year old boys to come kick the crap out of them.

Next door there is a teenage girl. She is really pretty and sweet, she helps our four year old ride her bike and I always see her doing chores for her step mom. The dad is a very good man and the step mom seems sweet and very well dressed/clean/hard working and stuff.

The teenage girl runs away from home every now and again and skips school ALOT (I know because the step mom talks about her alot. From what the (supposedly sweet) step mom said, the girl - jen- has been trhough alot, her mom and brother died in a car crash when she was 9. The step mom - christy- says she does everything for this girl yadaya blahblah.

So once in a while I hear screaming from the house. A month ago this girl was standing on the front porch in her bra and underwear with makeup smeared all over her face and body. I ran over with a blanket and covered her and asked her what happened she says "I got caught wearing lipstick and my stepmom beat me and smeared this all over me and locked the door" I cried with her and offered to call the cops...she begged me not to, she says she has called the cops and they dont believe her because christy is so perfect and the girl has a record -- running away and skipping school, shop lifting food so she can eat etc. She even went to counselors at school, cps....Nobody will help her.

I asked her to tell me what other things go on when I hear her screaming. She says last week chris held her down and tried to shave her head as a punishment for not brushing her hair. Sometimes she gets hit. Chris calls her dead mother a whore and took away the only things she had from her mother ( a teddy bear from the hospital and a heart shaped pillow) chris ripped these things up the day after her mom died. The mental abuse is horrible...another story she told me was that she took her dog for a walk and a loose pit bull came out of nowhere and bit the dogs leg...her step mom put a gun to the dogs head and threatened to shoot it...apparently that happened when she was about 9.

She tells her dad all the time but when he comes home chris is always so nice, the perfect mom. Most of the time when I see chris and jen they look like mother and daughter, laughing and shopping...But those screams I hear sometimes make my soul cry...I sit in my room and cry. I asked my husband what to do but he said its too complicated.

Answer
set up a video recorder and catch the mayhem in the act.....or at least advise the girl to attempt it on the inside. Or just have her use a cell phone or digital camera on record and put it in an obscure spot. Don't even need to get video, I'm sure the conversation will be interesting enough. Tell her to build up a case, don't just run to pops with one recording. Record as many interesting screnarios as possible unless it's becoming too unbearable. Cause if the dad is too passive, he may regard it as just a one time deal. But the more crap that is shown, it may show how serious it is. And make sure that when showing the pops...it's in secrecy and not in front of Chris....don't want to let her get wise as to what is happening.

And if some solid evidence is gathered and Pops is still in denial. I'm sure some legal action with the evidence will straighten some people out.

Good camera to film basketball games?

Garrett

What is a relatively cheap but good camera that's good quality, long battery life, and a lot if memory. I'm going to be filming my basketball games and I need clear quality for the whole game and I will watch them later and possibly edit them for highlights. Also what would be a good video editing software?

Answer
Don't use an SLR - your recording time is limited to a few minutes at a time before things start to overheat and the camera shuts down. Similarly, most of the HD formats aren't going to work for you - they're very highly compressed and don't capture movement well. They're also poor in low / uneven light conditions (I'm guessing you don't have much control over the lighting). If you can run to it, I'd look at the Canon HV40 or a used HV20 or 30.

For editing, the front runners are the Adobe Premier family and the Sony Vegas family (you'd be fine with either of the entry level products) but I'd have a look at Serif's MoviePlus X5 - it's now one version out of date so it's heavily discounted. It's very Vegas like but it's easier to use and you get a lot for your money (e.g. unlimited video and audio tracks).

Any reccomended digital cameras that have a very good camcorder function?

ralphnfifi

Looking for one that will take an hour or two worth of decent video too. Thanks anyone.

Answer
Canon Powershot S2 IS. Highly recommended camera (by Consumer Reports) and I've used it to video record from time to time with good results (example, recorded several minutes at the end of the basketball game between George Mason and UConn in the NCAA tourny from second level. Up to 40X zoom, so you can get a variety of views, and horizontal stabilization keeps things fairly clear even at magnification). Length of video would depend on how much memory you put in. Probably want at least a 1G card for the amount of time you're talking about.

Tips for recording video in low light?

Cee

Anyone have any tips for recording video in low light situation?
I have an HTC EVO 3D and I also have a Nikon Coolpix camera.
I don't know which one produces better video in low light.
Even though one is a cell phone and the other is a camera, they both produce equally great video in the light.
Which is better for recording in the dark?
Any suggestions for settings I should have the camera on or anything?

Answer
Add light.

Small lens diameter and small imaging chips in the video capture devices you listed cannot capture "good video" under poor lighting conditions. When lighting is poor and a still image is captured, both units have a flash to provide adequate light - if the flash is not used or blocked, the captured image is poor. With video it is similar, but rather than a flash of light, a consistent light source is needed.

As the various cameras and camcorders increase in price the lens gets wider and the imaging chip gets larger. These are the main reasons they can behave better under poor lighting conditions. As you have found, when there is light, your video capture items work fine. This is basically the same with ANY camera. If there is enough light, it will record great video.

The only thing you can add to the cameras or environment is light.

What are the ideal settings to record great video in low light conditions on my Canon Vixia HG20 camera?

Raj

Love my Canon Vixia HG20 - except low-light is less than superior. Any suggestions would be approciated.

Answer
Rick is correct.

There is no consumer-grade camcorder that does well in "low light". The lenses and imaging chips are too small.

If you stay with that camcorder, then the suggestion is to turn on lights or use a video light.

If you need good low-light performance, then you must use a camcorder with bigger lenses and imaging chips (preferably in a 3-chip - CCD or CMOS - array). Big lenses allow more light in; big imaging chips do more with less light. Big glass and big chips are expensive - but the low light behavior is what draws the prosumer and professional users to them. If inexpensive consumer cams did well in low-light, the pros would be using them.

What is the best and cheapest video camera for recording at night?

Zoe

Lately we have been having some very vicious thunderstorms. Within the last 10 days I have seen a mesocyclone and a tornado (not in the same day!). There is an amazing lightning show going on north of here, and my Panasonic mini DV won't pick up the lightning in the clouds. Neither will the crappy camera on my cell phone. =(

Answer
I have a Canon FS11. Try the Canon FS100 ($400) and then buy a 2GB SD card for like $30. You can't really go lower than that price because cameras around and below this range don't usually have the best capabilities at night. If you want, check out a Sony Handycam. Sonys have this "nightshot" feature that uses infrared technology to see in the dark. Hope this helps!

How do I make my HD video camera to Night Vision ?

ilovecomed

I have this Sony's HDR-TG1 (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HDR-TG1-Definition-Handycam-Camcorder/dp/B0017008HC/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1243731908&sr=8-14)

If I attach a infrared light on it, does that allow me to capture a night vision video ? Thanks in advance!

Answer
Pretty much.
What application are you looking for?
You will already discover that your camera is night vision. Your camera is sensitive to infrared light, and will capture it. Prove it, switch it on and record yourself holding the TV remote. Press buttons on the remote. Play back and see that you can see the light blinking from the remote. The camera can see the IR light, but your eyes cannot. Your camera is already night vision ready.

To turn it into a night vision camera, you probably want to use it in the dark with no *visible* light source. Therefore you are going to need an IR spot light. The size and strength (brightness) of this spot light will be based on where you are using it. If you are just taking shots in a small room, i t wont need to be so big. If you want to see what your dog is doing in the back yard at night, you might need something much bigger.

On TV, when you see night vision footage, they are always using a huge IR spot light. You just cant see this light with your eyes. But you will notice that in the footage you can see shadows, hence, a spot light or two is being used. You can search for IR lights on the internet. LED ones are available, which are great for short distances of maybe upto a metre.

You can also use IR filters placed over normal lights. Cheaper, but you WILL see a red glow from under these ligths, it won't be invisible. I don't know where to get them from, sorry. Research IR filters. This is what they are using in the jungle when taking night vision shots. The animals dont care if there is a bit of a red glow coming from something.

Lights that are purely IR alone are probably going to only be the LED variety, as they have a narrow bandwidth spectrum of light. Very bright lights are usually incandescent ligths (burning filiment inside a glass tube) which have a broad spectrum, and filters are used to narrow the spectrum, but the filters are never perfect, hence the red glow from them.

Interestingly, a heat source can be used as IR light. Very inefficient though. If you have and electric room heater, or electric hot plates on your stove, switch them on, switch off the light, turn on the camera, and you will see that they light up the room. However, most of the power consumed is heat and not light.

What is the best camera (or DSLR??) for HD video recording?

chono

I'm srry if what I'm saying sounds dumb or something because I'm totally new to like recording and cameras and pixels/frames/lenses, all that jazz. I really want to start making more quality videos for my youtube channel and I wanna purchase a new camera to do video recording with. i know that a lot of cameras have really good focusing/auto focusing (i dont know what its called). I'm looking for something around $300-600 (less than 300 would be awesome) In generally, I just need help finding a camera with good focus and takes quality- decent video for a reasonable price..
I know this is totally not specific but any recommendations will be appreciated

Answer
Most compact camera's will not do a good job in low light.
Most DSLRs will not auto focus during videos (because of the mirror which needs to be flipped for fast focusing) unless you buy a mirrorless camera which auto focuses.
You can buy a HD Camcorder which will do a pretty good job most of the time but the vidoes will not be professional looking. HD Camcorders will keep everything in focus most of the time (if not all the time) so you really can't keep certain things in focus and other things blurred. I mean selective focusing- similar to what we see in movies or nice videos.
Now if you are serious about decent quality videos and are fine to go with Manual focusing, you can take nice videos. Buy a Pentax K-01 body for around $300. Buy a Super Takumar M42 lens for around $100 with an adapter for Pentax. Once you get hold of the manual focusing, you will be amazed how beautiful videos taken be take on big sensors of DSLRs compared to any HD camcorders. If you want to use AutoFocus, your videos will keep getting that lens noise while it tries (and misses while)focusingg. Will be horrible when the light is low.

I want a cheap camera where i can record videos like how many youtubers do! what brand can i get hd and cheap?

Presley Lu

I want to be able to make HD videos & it has to be affordable!

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video.
