The zoom control is on the top right of the camera. It's a lever around the shutter button. See page 64 of the user's manual.

The following paragraphs in the Canon G11 manual talk about whether you can operate the optical zoom and AF while recording video clips:

Conclusion:

So yes you can zoom, but your subjects must be relatively still. So no fast moving subjects then!

I understand there are speed limits to using certain memory cards so it is most advisable to use Class 10 SDHC memory cards for videos. Then you might bump into the next limitation which is about technology. You will only be allowed to shoot some 15 minutes or so with a digital camera. If you can shoot longer, the battery may die sooner. Even if you carried your car's battery behind your back to power your camera, the digital sensor will heat up and automatically shut down the camera anyway.

i took a photography course in school this year and we learned a little bit about recording videos and editing them but not as much as i was hoping because it was mostly about photography. i was wondering if anyone had any tips or tricks or things i should know when recording videos with the canon rebel t3.

Here is a few tricks.
Shooting good video takes some time and skill.
These tips I do should help you.
1. Set you camera to M or Manual.
2. Set the Shutter Speed to 1/40-1/50.
3. Set your Aperture to the fastest setting. (f/3.5-5.6 or something)
4. Set your ISO to 100-1600.
That should help you.
It will reduce the grain of the video and stuff.
Also turn the Picture Style to 100% flat.
The Picture Style is your Contrast and Saturation.
Also turn your sharping all the way down.
A flat image is way better to edit.
You will need to learn to shoot moving video well.
Make a few jibs and stuff.
If you have the money you could buy them.
Moving and panning video is what really stands out.
Just having the camera on the tripod is just boring.

I think I've fallen to the Canon side so what is the best model to buy and what lenses should I be buying as well? Video recording quality.?

Can a Video Camera user tell me if it is possible to give a video camera recording more of a movie/film quaility with more saturated colours ect, and not look so cold and harsh like a 'My Birthday party' video. Is there a filter I could use or is it just down to using proffessional video cameras.

You will need some kind of mini-DV or HDD video camera at the minimum ... something that will produce broadcast quality video. You can shoot using 16:9 aspect ratio to give you the look of Wide Screen.

But to really do what the big boys do, you will need a HD quality video camera. Panasonic, Sony, JVC and Canon are but four that make such cameras.

FS100 Canon camcorder video recording help?

Okay. So my mom bought me this camera a few christmases back.
But I haven't really started to use it till now.
It's a FS100 Canon camcorder.

Here's my problem. When I record a video on it, it won't upload to my Macbook.
It says that the file can't upload.
To record my videos I put the camera on the record button and just hit it.
I didn't change any settings on the camera from when I got it.
Also, I don't know if this helps but I record it on a 2GB SD Card.
I'm almost 100% positive that the memory card isn't the problem though.
Since I've tried it on other cards.
Please help me. I really want to use this camera for it's full use.

The Canon FS100 is a standard definition, flash memory, consumer, camcorder that saves video files to MPG file type. iMovie cannot deal with that file type directly so the file needs to be transcoded - converted.

FS100 Canon camcorder video recording help?

What are your suggestions for recording devices that are affordable and suitable for amateurs? Also... I do recording at my own house, so I don't have "sponge wall"... I am wondering if that Canon camcorder has a Mic jack. If it does, any mic will fit into it and move you where you need to be. You could even hook up a wireless lavaliere Mic, the positions you can be are mostly endless, Look Mom, no wires!

I do not know how you shoot your Youtube videos. Do go to Youtube and use the video uploader to shoot a video right to youtube, no editing, no storage what so ever on your hard drive(s)? If you do this, get microphone and plug it into your computers Mic jack.

If you shoot your videos while your editing software is open, like I do, You would need that Mic jack on the camera. f you shoot, then put the video on a hard drive and run the footage through a video editing program, then get a Digital sound recorder and mix the audio in while editing

I really want to buy a camera that's really good for taking pictures at concerts, (probably outside) and recording. I have some FujiFilm 14 mega pixels camera now, but I mean I want a REALLY nice camera. I was looking into Nikon and Canon cameras but I don't know which one would be good for video recording too. I'm not really too concerned about the price, but under 4,000 would be cool!

First of all, you may not be allowed to bring a camera into the venue, I'd check first.
You might get away with smuggling it in, but personally I hate the possibility that I might either have my camera confiscated, or I won't be allowed inside.
Next problem is that concerts are a low light situation, usually also coupled with much movement as well as a fair distance from the subject.

All up, that makes it EXTREMELY challenging. The only hope of half decent concert photos are good DSLR cameras and even for those you need very good and very FAST lenses.

Small P&S cameras have tiny little sensors, so they don't do well with low light situations.
Concert photos are often blurry because there isn't enough light, so the shutter speed is too slow to hand-hold it, even worse when you add the movement of the performers to it.

You could try raising your ISO, but that will add noise to your photos.
You could try using your little flash, but it can't reach very far, and won't do you a whole lot of good other than lighting up the back of the heads directly in front of you.

I'm afraid there are a number of good reasons why the pro's carry around huge, expensive cameras, lenses, and lights.
It would be lovely if a tiny camera could do it all, but the reality is that small P&S's just can't handle concert situations very well. Some places do allow small P&S cameras (but no DSLRs). The reason for that is because they KNOW you will never get any decent shot with a little P&S.

However, I do realize that some of us a lot easier to please than others, so perhaps what is totally unacceptable to me might be fine in YOUR eyes.
If you can't have a good camera with you, at the very least make sure you learn how to you use what you have, so you can make the most out of it. Read your manual several times, attend a class, read some books on photography - it will help a lot.
If you're not interested in learning much, at the very least learn how to turn off the flash. Those tiny on-camera flashes only reach a few feet, so all you do with it is illuminate the bodies in front of you.

As to sound - there is a good reason why the audio pros carry around a lot of very big and very expensive gear. Even a good camcorder can only do so much in that regard - let alone a little P&S still camera! Don't expect miracles - don't even expect anything you'd ever want to listen to again.

Are you talking about video or still? Because if you're talking video, you can't, (ok, I shouldn't say can't, but if it's a "camera" and not a "camcorder", you can't and it would be a push, if not impossible, even then! )

That said, if you want to take a long exposure, and have a camera capable of it, you might be able to use the bulb setting. It keeps your lens open until you release it.

If you're not interested in learning much, at the very least learn how to turn off the flash. Those tiny on-camera flashes only reach a few feet, so all you do with it is illuminate the bodies in front of you.

I have some FujiFilm 14 mega pixels camera now, but I mean I want a REALLY nice camera. I was looking into Nikon and Canon cameras but I don't know which one would be good for video recording too. OK, for one, it depends on which camera you have.

I have a SD 1400 IS canon camera, and it has HD video which takes up a lot of space. Is there any way to change the settings for that so it's not as big a file so it doesn't take up as much space?

Sure you can do that - read your manual.

However be aware if you allow less space your quality will be in the tank and look like an old, cheap digital camera recording 640. High quality, more space, simple as that.

My suggestion would be to buy more and larger cards.

My canon camera is a ELPH 520 HS and the sound won't come out when i play a video i recorded. you can view it and stuff but the sound won't come out, but when i transfer the file onto my computer, i can hear it. how come i can't hear it on my camera?
i have clicked menu already but there isn't anything for sound settings except the shutter, start-up sound, operation, and selftimer. there's nothing for video sound settings. please help me :(
It started working before, the sound just stopped working like a few days ago and i've had it since december

Is there a canon camera that records uncompressed media instead of AVCHD? I hear AVCHD degrades the quality a lot and want a camera that can bypass from the inside. Any help would be great.

Uncompressed? No. Less compression? Yes. That would be any camcorder that uses MiniDV tape and records DV or HDV format video... Like the Canon HV40, XHA1, XLH series... At Sony, the HDR-FX7, HDR-FX1000, HVR series... if you stay in high definition. There are several standard def camcorders, too - Canon GL2, XL2, Sony DVCAM series... Canon ZR960, Sony DCR-HC62, Panasonic PV-GS320...

I do not know what you mean by "want a camera that can bypass from the inside".

MiniDV tape based camcorders mean your computer must have a firewire port. You will connect the camcorder's DV port (not USB) to the computer's firewire port (not USB) with a firewire cable (not USB). USB-to-firewire/DV cable/converter/adapter things do not work.
