Filming a soccer/football match what equipment?

Ding

I've been asked to film a football match for my local team, so they can watch it back and learn.

I don't have any professional video equipment, nor am I going to buy any for this but I do want to get the best results I can with what I have.

I have a DSLR with HD video but what lens would be best? I also will possibly have a go-pro that I thought could be good to strap to the crossbar so they can see how they attack/defend corners.

Any tips, advice?

Thanks!
1) what lens you got with the camera???
At the moment I have a 50mm, 24-70mm & 70-300mm but hopefully getting a 10-20mm also soon.
2) what are they trying to get from the video???
They just want to watch it back to learn from it, there's a debate going on about the differences from watching from the sidelines and as a player on the pitch.
3) wide angle lens would be better...
4) DON'T strap an expensive piece of kit to a cross bar...
But Go-Pro's are built for stuff like this, I wouldn't do it without getting it insured but with the proper accessories it should be ok right?
5) how are you intending to keep it filming???
Good question, I've not thought about this? I've never filmed anything for a long period of time.
Would a battery grip be good enough for 45mins & then change batteries?
@fhotoace

I'm a photographer, I've shot a few games, that's why they asked me.

Also, this is not a premier league game, very far from it, there is no stadium, they play on a local rec!

Answer
You need a video camera to shoot football or any other field sport

What skills and equipment do you specifically have that caused them to pick you as the shooter?

Most teams that record their teams performance on the filed use three cameras.

One at each end of the field mounted on a tall poll and one from the top of the stands shooting an overall view of the game, goal to goal.

Before you do anything, spend some time at game where video is being shot of the game and talk to the people with the cameras.

Is there any way to increase video quality?

My uncle recorded parts of my soccer game on my cell phone. Its the HTC HD 2, so it's a decent camera. But that was only because the actually recorder wasn't charged. Anyway, the video's came out a bit fuzzy but my coach wants to see the video clips. After I put the videos on my computer, is there any program or anything I can use to enhance the video quality, even by a little bit?

Answer
you dont say what you are using to edit the video, you may be able to increase the sharpness, a little, but to be honest a cell phone camea is not a camcorder, and the amount of compression they use does not make for good quality video, just ok video.

if you dont have anything to edit your video with then have a look here some are free some are not

How do I create a soccer highlight video when my season is over?

Nixer

The college I'm going to wants a soccer highlight video so I can get an athletic scholarship but I dont have one and my season ended. What do I do?

Answer
Yeah, try and ask your friends' parents and see if they have any recorded games you could borrow. If push comes to shove just head to the park and video tape yourself jogging, shooting perfect goals from the penalty box, doing ladder drills, etc. Also if the gym allows you to film inside (some do not) bring your camera and tape youself benching or doing some kind of weight activity. A highlight video should be dynamic and you shouldn't just limit your background to some boring green field and nets (but don't go overboard with different locations). Avoid heavy metal song tracks in there and use a really high quality camera to film, not just any old camcorder. Look nice for it but don't go overboard with makeup and also don't wear your team uniform throughout the entre video to make it seem like it was filmed over a span of a couple months. I reccomend wearing lots of Nike and Adidas shirts and shorts to look really cool and your best pair of cleats. Also don't wear too much of the colleges' logos because that will make you seem typical and not different than others. Good luck!

Which camcorder is good for filming soccer games?

ninjastyle

I want to film my brothers soccer games and training so I wanted to buy a camcorder.
My budget is pretty low so nothing fancy.
My friend is selling Samsung HMX-F80BP, and I want to know can this one record soccer/football games. I would use tripod and just go left right left right with occasional zooming.

I also thought about Canon vixia m30 or r30 but those are a bit over budget so I probably will reconsider them in a few months.

Answer
HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes – four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. And add the fact that to get a HD camcorder that could produce better video quality footage, one would have to spend in excess of $3500 for that camcorder that could produce higher quality video

In short, Yes, a 2GB memory card or so will hold more than 2 hours of footage. But with my experience in the industry I would never buy those types of cameras. The main reason being, the camera is a camera with a video function and not a true video camera. So the quality of what you are recording is crap and the same quality as a Youtube video. How do I transfer a home video on a mini DV to a windows media file?

Q. I recorded a soccer game on a Canon Optura XI digital video camera. The camera takes the mini DV tapes. I want to transfer it onto my computer in either a media player file or similar. How do I do that?

A. Hopefully your camera and computer have fire wire. USB is slow and quality is not good.First plug fire wire to computer and then to camera. Turn on camera and it should be automatically picked upped by computer.A window will pop up and give you a list of options of programs to use.Media player should be one of them. You can then record on to your computer and edit the video. Later on you can burn it to a DVD if you have a burner in your computer.

A. I think you can record as long as your micro sd card space lasts.

Which camcorder is good for filming soccer games?

Is there any way to increase video quality?

A. you dont say what you are using to edit the video, you may be able to increase the sharpness, a little, but to be honest a cell phone camea is not a camcorder, and the amount of compression they use does not make for good quality video, just ok video.

if you dont have anything to edit your video with then have a look here some are free some are not

How long can a 30gb sd card record for? i have a finepix s2940wm camera?
Q. finepix s2940wm camera i want to record my soccer game i wanna know how long it could record for

A. The longest "take" time on a still digital camera with a video feature is 4 gb or about 17 minutes when shooting in Full HD.

Since when using a script to shoot videos require takes shorter than about 3 minutes in most cases, you will never have to worry about filling a 4 gb video file.

What is a good camera/video camera?
Q. I am looking for a good camera that also has a good camcorder built in. Looking to use to take lots of pictures of my children and also record soccer games etc. What is a good brand and place to go to get it?

A. At the consumer level the best video recorders are camcorders. They can do stills but not very well.

actually, again at the consumer level, the best results are with, in my opinion, any model in the
Canon Rebel series from the t3 to the t3i - $500 to about $850.

Here's a good place to do research.

Does anyone know about those 5 megapixel digital video cameras with the memory cards?
Q. I wanted to buy one, however, is the 32MB internal memory or the memory card large enough to tape a 2 hour school play or a 1 hour soccer game? And can they be hooked to the TV to record over to a DVD?

A. They are Cheap and Nasty cameras.
