It depends on what kind of video camcorder you will be using. They all work on most computers, they just download differently.
If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorderâ¦.
Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.
The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection.

If you have a mini dvd camcorderâ¦.
You will have to finalize your dvd in the camera and then put the dvd in your computer's DVD burner (top loading only) and then you will have to convert the files (I downloaded handbrake file converter free) and import them into your editing program. Use the HELP feature in your editing program to learn about editing. Once you are ready to burn, your project will be burned to a different DVD and you can file the original away.

If you have an analog (VHS) camcorderâ¦
You need an analog converter, either internal card or external such as the dazzle. It's very easy to use and come with good software. You would hook your analog VHS camera or VCR to the analog converter, the dazzle and then hook the dazzle to your PC. The dazzle cost around 70.00 , but worth the money if you have a lot of VHS to tapes to convert.

I hope this helps. As far as editing once you get your video from your camera to your PC, well there is alot of editing software out there. Windows Movie Maker is free and comes standard on XP, not sure about Vista but I think there is something similar. I find it sadly lacking and I purchased Pinacle studio 11 ultimate, because I was familar with studio 9 and I needed an upgrade. Studio 9 wouldn't read my digital camera videos, but it would read my camcorder videos.

To answer your follow-up question, chances are VERY high yu will not find anything that will stream high definition video through USB. Not at the consumer, prosumer or pro level. That means HDMI, component (RGB) or AV plugging into a "Tricaster" box or something similar.

Yes, the Canon HV40 is miniDV tape based. The DV in miniDV = Digital Video. The zeroes and ones stored on digital tape are just as digital as the zeros and ones stored on flash memory, hard disc drive or even DVD. The format is different. The Canon HV40 records in high quality, low compression, high definition (1080i), video onto the digital tape in HDV format. Just because it is tape does not make it somehow "less digital"... Digital tape should not be confused with analog video onto VHS-C or Hi8 or other analog formats storing analog video.

It's going to be a very low budget film.

forget the mac

you need PTZ cameras, these can be remotely aimed (Pan-tilt) and framed with the zoom. since you don't need to change all cameras at the same time, only one controller is needed.

next you need a video mixer. any of the Panasonic WJ-MX series will work. The WJ-MX50a is made for 4 cameras. These mixers also have audio so you can mix additional audio sources, such as the church PA. mixer also has a "preview" output so you can see how you are adjusting the camera before you "take" it on the program out.

finally, record live on a DVD-R recorder/player. that way you are ready to make copies even as the echos of the last song are fading away.

I'm a pianist and I need to record a video of my playing to apply for a scholarship. My church has a beautiful, massive Steinway Grand piano, the biggest one available. I would love to use it, but my family only owns home video cameras. Where could I find the proper equipment to make a good recording? Is it possible to hook a mic up to the inside of the piano? If so, how? Do you have any other ideas?

The best thing you can possibly do is to find a good audio person to record your performance. It will cost you a lot less than buying all the equipment you need. Once you have a recording you can make a video and you will use the audio track from that recording session. Try Craigslist to find an audio person that can record for you. They will come with mics and recorders. You can easily spend over $1,000 on some recording equipment and then you still don't know how to use it.

We have a Video Camera, but the microphone is to sensitive to the noise around it! since its a church its very loud, we film from the back of the church and you can hear everyone who comes in, so we want the audio recorded from the microphone so we can just hear our pastors voice. The Video Camera we have is the Canon XF100, i tried changing the setting so there would not be so much noise but it is still doing it.

We do have an audio mixer board, and 3 receivers but I don't if we can use does to do it?

For semi-pro level in SD (not HD) start with:
Canon GL1

For just a little more money and a much better picture:
Canon GL2

For vastly better color and low-light handling:
Canon XL1s **highly recommended

If you want to go HD, go for the Canon XH G1.

If these cameras are out of your budget range, look VERY HARD on eBay for a used model. You can get a very good deal. It's how I got my XL1s for less than half of retail. It's still working great for me after 3 years. You can't get good picture and color for less than about $600.

For software, you can try Sony's Vegas Movie Studio 9. It can be had for under $100. It's more advanced than just about anything in its price range.

I personally use and love Final Cut Pro, but it costs near $1000 and requires that you own a Mac.

Where can I buy cheap disposable video cameras?

Looking to have a family reunion. My family is spread all over the US. So I know not all of them are going to be able to make it. What I wanted to do is send the family members that can't make it disposable video cameras in the mail so they could all record a video message and I can make a video montage and play it at the reunion. Not looking to spend any more than $20 for each camera. Need about 10 cameras.

You won't be able to find camcorders at that price BUT you may be able still do your project if those family members have their own devices capable of recording video. Most, if not all cell phones are capable of recording video. And many point-in-shoot digital cameras can record video as well. Also some computers have web cams and using capture software those cams can record video. Lastly, is asking the absentees if they can share a camcorder with other family members and/or borrow a cam from a neighbor or even from their local church or school. I think if you get the idea going with those who can't make it, they most likely would do what they can to participate in your project however they can.

I am looking for a good camera that I can use to record my Sunday Morning church services. We have elderly member who can't make it to the services any longer, but we would like to record it and send it to them? We're looking for a camera with the price range of $400.00. We need it to be good video quality and sound quality. Also, the precher wears a clip-on microphone. Is there anyway to pick that up clearly. Any help at all would be much appreciated.

I would love to use it, but my family only owns home video cameras. Where could I find the proper equipment to make a good recording? Is it possible to hook a mic up to the inside of the piano? If so, how? Do you have any other ideas?

The best thing you can possibly do is to find a good audio person to record your performance. It will cost you a lot less than buying all the equipment you need. Once you have a recording you can make a video and you will use the audio track from that recording session. Try Craigslist to find an audio person that can record for you. They will come with mics and recorders. You can easily spend over $1,000 on some recording equipment and then you still don't know how to use it.

We have a Video Camera, but the microphone is to sensitive to the noise around it! since its a church its very loud, we film from the back of the church and you can hear everyone who comes in, so we want the audio recorded from the microphone so we can just hear our pastors voice. The Video Camera we have is the Canon XF100, i tried changing the setting so there would not be so much noise but it is still doing it.

We do have an audio mixer board, and 3 receivers but I don't if we can use does to do it?

Generally you should stick with a Mini DV-C tape camcorder, but you'll need a capture card or FireWire connection on your computer.

Prices start in the $200 range right now.

These transfer in AVI format which is the easiest to work with.

I think if you get the idea going with those who can't make it, they most likely would do what they can to participate in your project however they can.

I want to record a church service using multiple cameras. Any ideas how can I can do this and software to use?

Q. I am using a Mac.
Basically, I want to use multiple cameras to record a church service, all connected to my Mac, and control it from here.
It's going to be a very low budget film.
I've heard of Premiere Pro, and have used a little bit of it.
But any other ideas?
How to connect the cameras to each other, if possible how to connect the church sound system?

A. forget the mac

you need PTZ cameras, these can be remotely aimed (Pan-tilt) and framed with the zoom. since you don't need to change all cameras at the same time, only one controller is needed.

next you need a video mixer. any of the Panasonic WJ-MX series will work. The WJ-MX50a is made for 4 cameras. These mixers also have audio so you can mix additional audio sources, such as the church PA. mixer also has a "preview" output so you can see how you are adjusting the camera before you "take" it on the program out.

finally, record live on a DVD-R recorder/player. that way you are ready to make copies even as the echos of the last song are fading away.

Q. Recording on a video camera. Someone admits to harassment. The harassment was through text messages. About 350 text messages and 20 restricted phone calls were made to the individual in less then 48 hours. The harasser does not know he or she has been recorded. The harasser admitted to texting the individual phone and calling on a block number. I just need to know what the law is in Florida for this. This is not a confession for Church.

A. Recording some one and not telling them is not usable in court. But you can you use that as evidence against the person by showing it to someone. The easiest thing to do is get your number changed on the cell phone which may be done for free the first time due to a harassment issue. Filling for a temporary restraining order can be done by a police officer coming to your house and that police can see the tape.

A. It depends on how high up you want to go. I'll stick with the Canon brand, because it's what I know and because they have great color.

For semi-pro level in SD (not HD) start with:
Canon GL1

For just a little more money and a much better picture:
Canon GL2

For vastly better color and low-light handling:
Canon XL1s **highly recommended

If you want to go HD, go for the Canon XH G1.

If these cameras are out of your budget range, look VERY HARD on eBay for a used model. You can get a very good deal. It's how I got my XL1s for less than half of retail. It's still working great for me after 3 years. You can't get good picture and color for less than about $600.

For software, you can try Sony's Vegas Movie Studio 9. It can be had for under $100. It's more advanced than just about anything in its price range.

I personally use and love Final Cut Pro, but it costs near $1000 and requires that you own a Mac.
