I'm interested in getting a digital SLR camera purely for shooting video and wondered if anyone knows of any particular models up to about £800 (about $1300) that fulfills the following requirements:

Full HD at 1920x1080
A file format that would be compatible with Avid editing software (so NOT AVC HD)
Either 25fps or 24fps but not 30fps

Also if any body has any experience of using these cameras, I would be interested to hear what people think of the audio quality.

Any help with this will be much appreciated.

The thing with the 5D M2 is that at $2500(Body only, figure another $600 minimum for a lens) it shoots no better video than an $800 t2i.

On the plus side, this is 20 gigs/hour full HD, which is better than all but the most expensive consumer HD camcorders, which max out at 11 gigs/hour. (With the SLR limitations explained by Ace).

And if video is your primary objective, for a comparable $3300 you have the XF100.

DSLRs are weak in several aspects, but for occasional short clips with poor audio, they can be fine. Get the 5D if you want prints of still pictures that are 40-60" tall (about $100 each on nice paper). If you can settle for a print 24-36" tall, go with the t2i or similar. Both have the same video and the t2i will leave you enough change to get a good used XF100 in a couple years.

A Professional SLR Camera or a HD Video Camera?

I am considering to buy either of those two. My problem is that I cannot decide whether I prefer having a Video Cam or a regular Camera.


I am looking into the Cannon EOS Rebel XTi (not sure about the name) Camera but it does not have any video recording for those moments which requires it. Is there a high quality SLR Camera which records some video?

The Sony Hard Drive High Def Cameras are one of my choices because I am quite familiar with them. But, they record unto a new format for HD which almost no video editing software can edit it still. I think its AVCHD.

So any recommendations?

Digital SLRs generally do not record video, because of their design. The mirror which bounces the image into the pentaprism is, naturally, in the way of the CMOS or CCD, so the image is only captured when the mirror is up (that is, when the shutter is open).

Most stills cameras that shoot video shoot pretty lousy video, and, likewise, most video cameras that capture stills do so as an afterthought. The two features aren't really compatible -- yet.

Your best bet would be between the Canon Rebel T2i/550d or the Nikon D5000. The Rebel puts out 1080p, while the Nikon only 720p. If you can afford the Rebel take it, it has some of the best quality for photography as well as video recording, but the D5000 isn't that far behind plus its a lot cheaper than the Rebel.

How about $650? A Nikon D5100 will shoot video at Full HD, but not at 60 fps. For that you need to up your budget to around $800.

Why do you think you need 60 fps? Internet gossip?

If you are still interested in shooting video, look for a real video camera. dSLR's are primarily still cameras with a video feature.

You need to spend some time deciding what you want in the way of a video camera and either choose a real video camera or be satisfied with what dSLR cameras can produce.

All new DSLRs are probably going to have it from now on (in HD). All consumer Nikons have it except the D3000 and all current Canons (except the Rebel XS) have it as well. All the other brands already have it in most current models.

All Micro 4/3 cameras have it & many of the regular 4/3 do as well.

Finding one that doesn't have it would be harder.

Nikon: D5000, D90, D300s, D3s
Canon: Rebel T1i, T2i, 5D Mark II, 7D, 1d Mark IV
Olympus/Panasonic/Leica: all Micro 4/3
Olympus E-620; The E-30 & E-3 have the technology, and could have video activated with firmware.
Pentax: K-x & K-7

Sony is a bit behind, but that's probably because they're afraid of damaging their video camera market.

Yay I am using a t3i too so hi this is something i know!

Wanna shoot in Full HD 1920x1080 resolution? The T3i has a data rate of 45Mbits/sec which is 5.89Mbytes/sec. All of those class 4, class 6 and class 10 means something, class 4 is 4Mbytes/sec, class 6 is 6Mbytes/sec and class 10 is 10Mbytes/sec. Look, our camera fits snugly under the coverage of a class 6 card. But bear in mind, the T3i has variable bitrate. It would be fine if you are shooting while the camera is stationary. But when you start swinging the camera around for panning shots, more action is going on and the bitrate increases. When the camera's buffer is full and the video data cannot be transferred into the memory card in time, you will get an error message saying "recording was stopped automatically" on your camera. I highly recommend you to get a class 10 card for full HD performance. Plus its dirt cheap now so happy shopping!

ah on memory cards the class numbers are written in a circle so you know only to purchase the ones with number '10' encased with a circle... I am using a Transcend 16GB Class 10... Good luck!

Just what the question says. I'm a person that loves to take pictures, but I don't do it because I can't find a camera that has a fast shutter response. Just to be clear, I'm talking about the time between pressing the button to take the picture and when the picture actually takes. I see the perfect opportunity for photos all the time, but then by the time the picture is actually taken, whatever I'm taking a photo of has moved.

I don't want an SLR because I'm not a photographer and it'd really be just a waist of money. I'm looking for digital point and shoot cameras. I'd also like to have the possibility of HD video recording on the camera but my heart isn't set on it.

Shutter lag is caused by the camera's Auto Focus (AF) system and if it's too sluggish, taking photos can be quite frustrating. On cameras that do have problems with shutter lag...the trick to minimize lag is to allow the camera to lock in the focus by half pressing the shutter button, then when focus has been achieved...hold it there till the moment is right, then press the button down fully to take the shot. This allows less missed opportunities, but is still somewhat annoying having to do it all the time.

Luckily, these days you can get compact/point and shoot cameras that have minimal shutter lag, so are very quick to take a picture. This is due to improved processors and much improved AF systems.

As you can see, the camera up the top of the list takes around 0.15 secs to take one photo. The slowest camera in the list takes around 1.6 secs to take a picture. Times for taking 5 photos and using the flash are also included...

I don't want to lug around a still camera and a pocket HD video camera. Is the video recording on the new digital point & shoots comparable to the Flip and it's competitors, or is a dedicated video camera better?

the video quality of most digital point and shoot cameras is about equivilent to the quality of the flip video. it may be even better if the digital camera will shoot HD Video (720 or 1080)
Neither of these will compare to the quality of the better traditional video camera's which are available today.
Another thing you may want to consider is a Digital SLR which has HD Video shooting, such as the Canon T1i or T21 or the Nikon D5000.
These will take video that is superior to anything but professional HD video cameras, for a very reasonable price.
The user interface will take some getting used to, since the camera won't auto focus while shooting, and the zoom function will be performed by rotating the zoom dial on the lens, but I can attest that the video quality is supurb.

What Canon is comparable to the EOS 500d t1i Rebel?

The only other Canon camera that has video is a the 5D MKII which costs about 3x as much.

All the other new Canon Rebels have everything but video. The older Rebel XT and XTi don't have live view.

The same is true with Nikon and Pentax. The Nikon D5000 costs the same as the Rebel T1i and the Pentax K7 costs about $1,400.

the video quality of most digital point and shoot cameras is about equivilent to the quality of the flip video. it may be even better if the digital camera will shoot HD Video (720 or 1080)
Neither of these will compare to the quality of the better traditional video camera's which are available today.
Another thing you may want to consider is a Digital SLR which has HD Video shooting, such as the Canon T1i or T21 or the Nikon D5000.
These will take video that is superior to anything but professional HD video cameras, for a very reasonable price.
The user interface will take some getting used to, since the camera won't auto focus while shooting, and the zoom function will be performed by rotating the zoom dial on the lens, but I can attest that the video quality is supurb.

Just what the question says. I'm a person that loves to take pictures, but I don't do it because I can't find a camera that has a fast shutter response. Just to be clear, I'm talking about the time between pressing the button to take the picture and when the picture actually takes. I see the perfect opportunity for photos all the time, but then by the time the picture is actually taken, whatever I'm taking a photo of has moved.

I don't want an SLR because I'm not a photographer and it'd really be just a waist of money. I'm looking for digital point and shoot cameras. I'd also like to have the possibility of HD video recording on the camera but my heart isn't set on it.

Shutter lag is caused by the camera's Auto Focus (AF) system and if it's too sluggish, taking photos can be quite frustrating. On cameras that do have problems with shutter lag...the trick to minimize lag is to allow the camera to lock in the focus by half pressing the shutter button, then when focus has been achieved...hold it there till the moment is right, then press the button down fully to take the shot. This allows less missed opportunities, but is still somewhat annoying having to do it all the time.

Luckily, these days you can get compact/point and shoot cameras that have minimal shutter lag, so are very quick to take a picture. This is due to improved processors and much improved AF systems.

As you can see, the camera up the top of the list takes around 0.15 secs to take one photo. The slowest camera in the list takes around 1.6 secs to take a picture. How can i maintain my HD quality while uploading to youtube?

Hello, i am using a cannon SLR camera to record HD video at 720hd. and since the files are created as .MOV i am using a converter to convert them into .AVI still mainting the 720 aspect ratio,but when i upload it to youtube, the video loses alot of quality and i do not have the HD button, does anyone know any tutorial forums/videos i can go to to figure this out?

Wanna shoot in Full HD 1920x1080 resolution? The T3i has a data rate of 45Mbits/sec which is 5.89Mbytes/sec. All of those class 4, class 6 and class 10 means something, class 4 is 4Mbytes/sec, class 6 is 6Mbytes/sec and class 10 is 10Mbytes/sec. Look, our camera fits snugly under the coverage of a class 6 card. But bear in mind, the T3i has variable bitrate. It would be fine if you are shooting while the camera is stationary. But when you start swinging the camera around for panning shots, more action is going on and the bitrate increases. When the camera's buffer is full and the video data cannot be transferred into the memory card in time, you will get an error message saying "recording was stopped automatically" on your camera. I highly recommend you to get a class 10 card for full HD performance. Plus its dirt cheap now so happy shopping!

ah on memory cards the class numbers are written in a circle so you know only to purchase the ones with number '10' encased with a circle... I am using a Transcend 16GB Class 10... Good luck!

Q. Hello everybody. Here is the problem I'm having:

I am an enthusiastic concert attendee, and I go to a lot of Metal shows. I also like to record parts of the shows I go to, so I can go back and re-live the experience later. But these shows are LOUD! Around 115-130 decibels, to be more specific. And at that kind of high volume, most camera microphones are overloaded and the resulting videos have sound that is distorted, scratchy, and unlistenable.

What I have tried already:

I have owned a Fujifilm JV-100 in the past, and I currently own a Canon SX-260 HS and neither of these have decent audio. My fiancée's old Sony Cybershot DSC-W50, on the other hand, has great sound quality. The only issue with that is that it's ancient, shoots poor quality photos, and doesn't have full-HD video capability. I'm also not sure if the newer models of Sony Cybershots have the same quality of internal microphone and when I asked a sales representative about this and she was unable to give me an answer.

Limitations:

Using an actual camcorder is out of the question, as is buying an expensive digital SLR. It must be a compact, point-and-shoot camera because otherwise the event staff/venue security deem it a "professional device" and will not allow it inside the concert venues without a press pass, which I obviously do not have. I also cannot use a separate audio recording device, because it is impractical and I need the convenience of all the components (camera, video recorder, audio recorder) in one single device.

What I need:

Simply put, I need a compact, point-and-shoot camera that is capable of shooting in low-light settings, that is capable of recording HD video, and has an internal microphone that doesn't fuzz out at high volumes. I also need it on a budget, which is less than $400.

Please offer me some suggestions for what model camera I should look into buying. I'm tired of wasting my money on cameras that don't work under the rigorous conditions I have described. If there are other metalheads out there who've had the same problem, I'd really appreciate it if you could give me your recommendations. Thanks in advance.
