Can you take gopro hd hero to EDC Vegas 2012?

I know that you can't take DSLR. The website also says "no video cameras," but I was wondering if taking my gopro hd hero was okay. "no video cameras" seem a little vague, seeing how most point and shoot cameras are allowed but those can record videos also. Plus, gopro can be used as a camera, so...help?

p.s. do you guys know if small external microphones are allowed? I want to record some stuff with better sounds. It says "no professional audio" but a small external microphone isn't considered anything professional, right?

I am looking to purchase a new camera mainly for the purpose of video. I plan to make all my youtube videos and short films on it, so I'm not too focused on the still picture side. I wanted to go with the t2i originally but is the t3i worth the extra $100? Also, is the Nikon D3200 better than both of them (with video)? Thanks!

fhotoace always recommend Nikon cameras. When EVERYONE knows that Canon DSLR's outperform all of Nikon's cameras in video. Don't be entirely persuaded by his Top Contributor Title as most people and even he probably knows that Nikon has always been behind Canon in video. ALWAYS.

Notice at the 7:30 mark when he has the T3i in his hand, he has to use the D5100 to record. Pay attention to the video and audio quality until the 8:18 mark where he has the D5100 in his hand and has the T3i recording. The Canon obviously has better video and audio quality.

One of the first things the guy says is that the Canon is better than the Nikon at video. He says it in the comments as well.

If you need more proof than that then you should look up what other people think and I really hope no one says that Nikon has better video quality.

So the better choice is the Rebel T3i, no matter how new the D3200 is... Plus the vari angle LCD screen really comes in handy with video, but if you don't think it's worth the extra $100 then the T2i is basically the same thing.

Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Camcorder or DSLR Camera with date and time stamp?

I'm looking for a good camera between the $300-800 price range, preferably a DSLR, that can give me a date and time stamp on recorded video. I am a private investigator and it is required while recording video or taking pictures. It needs to be saved on the finished product as well.

As proof of when the video was taken it is worthless. The date stamp will only show the date that you have set in the camera.
You could set the date now to 19th December 2012. Any stills or movie you shoot will show that as the date.

I had this issue where I need to prove the reading on a meter at specific dates. The verifier insisted on using date stamped photographs until I took out my camera and took a photo of him that "proved" he had been in my office 3 months before!!!

Which mic to buy for indoor video shooting with DSLR?

Hi want to record a video of myself for a speech with my DSLR (Nikon5100) sitting inside my living room. There is a fair bit of noise from the ongoing traffic on the road as my house is just on the side of the main road.
I would like to use an external microphone and was wondering if anyone can suggest which one to go for: Shotgun boom mic or condenser mic or may be lapel mic. If its not a lapel mic, I'll be hanging it in front of my forehead just so that it is not visible on the video.

Please suggest.

Hi chatman & robin - you don't have to spend a lot of money to record a speech with your D5100. Here is a video I shot to show that you can get decent sound with a lavalier/lapel mic plugged directly into a DSLR (shot in response to someone who asked me whether a lapel mic plugged into the camera was good enough for a Kickstarter campaign):

I had a head cold when I recorded this, so I apologize for my pitiful voice and the multiple layers of clothing :)

I used a lapel mic running straight into the camera, with the camera's audio sensitivity set to "low" - something you can also do with the D5100.

I recommend the Olympus ME-15 with 1m cable - it is a high quality lapel mic at an affordable price (UK and US prices below).

You will also need an extension cable and mono to stereo adapter jack to go from the lapel mic's mono output to the stereo input on your camera.

My mom gave me a samsung Q10 camcorder for christmas, but I have some question(s)......
Are all camcorders grainy at night when you record something with them? You mean to tell me even if I bought the most expensive camcorder in the world, there will still be grain in it?
Are there any camcorders that do NOT show grain when you are in low lite rooms?

Hi,
Unfortunately, all cheap cameras will record a lot of noise (aka grain) when you record low light. This is something I have experienced a lot as, like you, I am a low budget movie maker. I have never used a Q10, but I believe it is generally in the price bracket of £100-200, so for that you cannot expect a great low light quality video. However, if you are crafty you can get round this. I suggest you record is a bright daylight (as natural as possible), set your white balance to something orangey-brown (packing paper or a brown envelope perhaps); if you do not know how to white balance, check it in the cameras instructions and the idea is to make the orange-brown paper look white on your camera, and then everything else in the video should look very blue. When you put it on you computer, you can change the video brightness and contrast in your editing software at make it look like it was shot at night, or in the dark. On top of this, some software packages come with noise reduction effects, and these can be quite helpful.

In answer to you second question, upper end video cameras will be less noisy. If you are looking to invest money in a bigger, better camera I would suggest you look at DSLRs, as these can record very good quality full HD videos, and of cause all the different lenses allow you to shoot with different DoFs, etc. I use a Nikon D5100, and it is very good in low light.

I'm looking for a my first DSLR camera and I'm on the look out for any suggestions you might have! Its my first one as I said, so I'm not looking for anything too fancy. It just has to have the basics as well as great quality. I would probably want it to be Nikon or Canon. It would be amazing if it has film recording option as well. Also I'm looking to stay under $700 if that is at all possible. Thanks!

I can't think of a single DSLR currently available that doesn't have video capability. No DIGITAL camera has "film recording".

In my opinion you should expand your camera search to include Pentax and Sony as well as Nikon and Canon because Pentax and Sony have some features not available in comparably priced models from Nikon and Canon.

Sony.
The Sony SLT series of APS-C sensor size DSLR cameras (a58, a65, a77) use Sony's Translucent Mirror Technology which allows for full-time, continuous phase-detect auto focus whether you're shooting still images or full 1080p HD video. Also, the SLT series of cameras have a focusing motor in the camera body as well as Sony's version of Image Stabilization (IS). Plus, the SLT cameras use the legacy Minolta Maxxum "A" lens mount introduced in 1985. There is still a good selection of previously owned Minolta Maxxum AF lenses available that will have full functionality on any of the SLT models and be stabilized as well. Both Nikon and Canon have their respective versions of IS in some but not all of their lenses so you pay for it again and again. The Sony SLT a65 was chosen by TIPA (Technical Image Press Association) as their top "DSLR - Advanced" in 2012.

Pentax.
The Pentax K-30 is currently the lowest-priced Weather Resistant (WR) DSLR on the market. WR means you can safely use the K-30 in the rain or in very dusty conditions. It doesn't mean you can take it swimming though. The K-30 uses the legacy Pentax "K" lens mount introduced in 1975 so any Pentax or third-party "K" mount lens ever made can be used on the K-30. Older manual focus lenses will meter on the K-30 and thanks to the focus motor in the camera body auto focus lenses will auto focus on it. Like Sony, Pentax has their version of IS in the camera body so any lens used becomes a stabilized lens.

Nikon.
Since approximately 1959 Nikon has used the "F" lens mount which gives Nikon the lead in backwards capability. However, you have to go to the D90 or D7000 to get a focusing motor in the camera body so on the lower-level Nikon DSLR cameras (D3100, D3200, D5100, D5200) only the more expensive AF-S lenses will auto focus. The older AF lenses can be used but only with manual focus. Nikon currently offers DSLR lenses in DX (for crop-sensor cameras) and FX (for their full-frame cameras) designations. An FX lens is perfectly suited on a DX or FX body and a DX lens can be used on an FX body although the camera will automatically "crop" the full-frame sensor to the size of a DX sensor. This means a loss of megapixels but at least a DX lens can be used on an FX body. Unfortunately, as previously mentioned, Nikon only has their version of IS (they call it VR) in some of their lenses.

Canon.
When Canon introduced their Rebel EOS auto focus 35mm film cameras in 1988 they abandoned their legacy "FD/FL" lens mount for the "EF" lens mount. Of course this limits their backwards compatibility. Canon has added additional confusion with their lower-priced "EF-S" lenses for their crop-sensor cameras (T3, T3i, SL1, 60D/60Da* and 7D). The "EF-S" lenses CANNOT be used on a Canon full-frame DSLR such as the 6D, 5D and 1D. Anyone who buys a crop-sensor Canon DSLR and adds 2 or 3 "EF-S" lenses and later decides to upgrade to a Canon full-frame DSLR will have to replace all of their lenses. Like Nikon, Canon chose to offer their version of IS in some but not all of their lenses. * The 60Da is a factory-modified 60D intended for use in astrophotography.

I am looking for a good camera for indoor pictures. I have 3 little kids and take a million shots indoors, but the little $100 camera I have doesn't take decent pictures. I've looked into it a bit and have found a few with good reviews and decent picture quality. The few I've looked into:

I have the LX3 and I love it. I also have an older and current generation dSLR and a bunch of high quality lenses. If you are mainly shooting the kids indoors, you want to have a fast lens (that relates to aperture, not autofocus) and you want something that is meant for wide to slight zooms, so you don't need the 20x zooms. Also, with most of these cameras, the small sensor size means that chasing megapixels is fool's gold. Plus, how big are you going to print something?

The Panasonic has a great lens, lets you work in lower light than most of the competitors, and takes great photos. It is pretty much the same camera as the D-LUX line which is easily twice as expensive, with a little different case design and some slight changes to the software.

Nikon's D7000 vs Canon's 60D?

2. Give another DSLR, on the same price range that is better or similar to the 2.

Both are fine.

Forced between the two, the Nikon D7000 wins. It uses a superior Sony Exmor image sensor that beats the Canon made one. Even if the Canon had some other edge over the Nikon, I would rather work around it and have a better image sensor.

There are better choices. For heavy video use, the Sony Alphas are better. For mostly photos, the new Pentax bodies use the newer generation of Sony Exmor image sensors. Look for discounts on the Pentax K 30 from 2012. Also, look at the new K 50. If you are really serious, the Pentax K5 II is worth a look as well.

On top of this, some software packages come with noise reduction effects, and these can be quite helpful.

In answer to you second question, upper end video cameras will be less noisy. If you are looking to invest money in a bigger, better camera I would suggest you look at DSLRs, as these can record very good quality full HD videos, and of cause all the different lenses allow you to shoot with different DoFs, etc. I use a Nikon D5100, and it is very good in low light.

I'm looking for a my first DSLR camera and I'm on the look out for any suggestions you might have! Its my first one as I said, so I'm not looking for anything too fancy. It just has to have the basics as well as great quality. I would probably want it to be Nikon or Canon. It would be amazing if it has film recording option as well. I can't think of a single DSLR currently available that doesn't have video capability. No DIGITAL camera has "film recording".

In my opinion you should expand your camera search to include Pentax and Sony as well as Nikon and Canon because Pentax and Sony have some features not available in comparably priced models from Nikon and Canon.

Sony.
The Sony SLT series of APS-C sensor size DSLR cameras (a58, a65, a77) use Sony's Translucent Mirror Technology which allows for full-time, continuous phase-detect auto focus whether you're shooting still images or full 1080p HD video. Also, the SLT series of cameras have a focusing motor in the camera body as well as Sony's version of Image Stabilization (IS). Plus, the SLT cameras use the legacy Minolta Maxxum "A" lens mount introduced in 1985. There is still a good selection of previously owned Minolta Maxxum AF lenses available that will have full functionality on any of the SLT models and be stabilized as well. Both Nikon and Canon have their respective versions of IS in some but not all of their lenses so you pay for it again and again. The Sony SLT a65 was chosen by TIPA (Technical Image Press Association) as their top "DSLR - Advanced" in 2012.

Pentax.
The Pentax K-30 is currently the lowest-priced Weather Resistant (WR) DSLR on the market. WR means you can safely use the K-30 in the rain or in very dusty conditions. It doesn't mean you can take it swimming though. The K-30 uses the legacy Pentax "K" lens mount introduced in 1975 so any Pentax or third-party "K" mount lens ever made can be used on the K-30. Older manual focus lenses will meter on the K-30 and thanks to the focus motor in the camera body auto focus lenses will auto focus on it. Like Sony, Pentax has their version of IS in the camera body so any lens used becomes a stabilized lens.

Nikon.
Since approximately 1959 Nikon has used the "F" lens mount which gives Nikon the lead in backwards capability. However, you have to go to the D90 or D7000 to get a focusing motor in the camera body so on the lower-level Nikon DSLR cameras (D3100, D3200, D5100, D5200) only the more expensive AF-S lenses will auto focus. The older AF lenses can be used but only with manual focus. Nikon currently offers DSLR lenses in DX (for crop-sensor cameras) and FX (for their full-frame cameras) designations. An FX lens is perfectly suited on a DX or FX body and a DX lens can be used on an FX body although the camera will automatically "crop" the full-frame sensor to the size of a DX sensor. This means a loss of megapixels but at least a DX lens can be used on an FX body. Unfortunately, as previously mentioned, Nikon only has their version of IS (they call it VR) in some of their lenses.

Canon.
When Canon introduced their Rebel EOS auto focus 35mm film cameras in 1988 they abandoned their legacy "FD/FL" lens mount for the "EF" lens mount. Of course this limits their backwards compatibility. Canon has added additional confusion with their lower-priced "EF-S" lenses for their crop-sensor cameras (T3, T3i, SL1, 60D/60Da* and 7D). The "EF-S" lenses CANNOT be used on a Canon full-frame DSLR such as the 6D, 5D and 1D. Anyone who buys a crop-sensor Canon DSLR and adds 2 or 3 "EF-S" lenses and later decides to upgrade to a Canon full-frame DSLR will have to replace all of their lenses. Like Nikon, Canon chose to offer their version of IS in some but not all of their lenses. * The 60Da is a factory-modified 60D intended for use in astrophotography.

Both are fine.

Forced between the two, the Nikon D7000 wins. It uses a superior Sony Exmor image sensor that beats the Canon made one. Even if the Canon had some other edge over the Nikon, I would rather work around it and have a better image sensor.

There are better choices. For heavy video use, the Sony Alphas are better. For mostly photos, the new Pentax bodies use the newer generation of Sony Exmor image sensors. Look for discounts on the Pentax K 30 from 2012. Also, look at the new K 50. If you are really serious, the Pentax K5 II is worth a look as well.

Hi want to record a video of myself for a speech with my DSLR (Nikon5100) sitting inside my living room. There is a fair bit of noise from the ongoing traffic on the road as my house is just on the side of the main road.
I would like to use an external microphone and was wondering if anyone can suggest which one to go for: Shotgun boom mic or condenser mic or may be lapel mic. If its not a lapel mic, I'll be hanging it in front of my forehead just so that it is not visible on the video.

Please suggest.

Hi chatman & robin - you don't have to spend a lot of money to record a speech with your D5100. Here is a video I shot to show that you can get decent sound with a lavalier/lapel mic plugged directly into a DSLR (shot in response to someone who asked me whether a lapel mic plugged into the camera was good enough for a Kickstarter campaign):

I had a head cold when I recorded this, so I apologize for my pitiful voice and the multiple layers of clothing :)

I used a lapel mic running straight into the camera, with the camera's audio sensitivity set to "low" - something you can also do with the D5100.

I recommend the Olympus ME-15 with 1m cable - it is a high quality lapel mic at an affordable price (UK and US prices below).

You will also need an extension cable and mono to stereo adapter jack to go from the lapel mic's mono output to the stereo input on your camera.

What kind of digital camera should I get?

I have a 2009 panosonic lumix (digital not HD - forget type though), but it's kind of broken because the lens won't open fully. I think it's time to get a new camera since I haven't gotten one since early 2010. I plan to be a photographer in the future (as a side job). I am also going to work at a camp and plan to take pictures there. I don't feel like bringing my big EOS digital 2008 cannon. Here's what I'm looking for:

1. Price range no more than $250. I would prefer less than $200, but if it would really suite me, then I'd go for it.
2. I'm not quite sure what I like. I know there's no such thing as a total all around digital point and shoot because I've been doing some research. I'd probably be doing photo shoots, but I also want one that would take like pictures of people doing sports since I'm in the horse world and like to take pictures of people horse riding and stuff. I guess I'd mainly focus on pets and kids and stuff.
3. I know optical zoom. I have photoshop CS5, so I don't need the pixels taken up like that.
4. I don't need a video recording. Would be nice, but eh I'd rather save my money and just use my phone or something.
5. I have a 2010 mac book pro laptop, so I'd like the card to be able to read/format on that.
6. If I print out images, it doesn't need to be more than 8X10 photo paper printed pictures. I mean I'd use my bigger camera for larger photos, so yeah. I'll probably just post the pictures online/email them if anything so won't need them really printed big.
7. I'd like to have a camera that has a decent battery life. At camp, the power went out for 8 days last year. I was able to take pictures the whole time and took over 300 pictures and still had battery life. I wouldn't mind having a long battery life like that camera.
8. My hand does shake a tad sometimes, so I'd prefer a not SOOO sensitive camera.
9. I'd like a camera that has the ability for manual settings and as well as auto or/and preset settings.
10. I'd prefer like Cannon, Nikon, Panasonic (nicer brands rather than the not so trustworthy brands because I know how to use those types of cameras).

1. Price is right smack in your budget.
2. Zoom is enough on this camera for taking horses and their riders. This is also good for shots of pets, kids and stuff which are near you or relatively out of reach. Just remember to shoot under lots of light. Indoors, use flash.
3. Optical zoom is not extravagant but not wanting either. Don't worry. What it lacks in zoom, it makes up with optical quality.
4. This has HD video which you can completely ignore until you find a lustful desire for it later.
5. As a standard feature, all cameras follow the FAT filesystem. With memory cards 4GB and larger, FAT32 is imposed. Mac computers can recognize FAT/FAT32 without problems. You can even format the memory card to FAT/FAT32 using your Mac (no matter how many pro photographers advice you not to). It will work.
6. This is a 16MP camera. You can print to 11x16" as long as exposure quality is gloriously good enough.
7. Four AA batteries. The best would be Energizer Lithium but you can also get rechargeable Ni-MH. Just make sure they're at least 2100 mAh for very long lasting shooting. In the event you run out, just slide over to the nearest store for some Alkaline AA's. That's the beauty of it.
8. Oh, this camera's sensitive. Apart from excellent optical glass quality, it has a triple-shake-reduction technology so don't worry about shaky hands. You're covered on that one.
9. Manual exposure? Manual focus? No problem. It's not as intuitive as a dSLR. This is after all just a bridge but, if you want manual, this has manual.
10. Since you can't spell Canon correctly, I'll take it you don't know that this brand is older than them and just a tad younger than Nikon. There was a time in fact when all cameras sold by all other brands (nice and not so trustworthy) were lesser than that sold by this brand alone. So there.

For my boyfriend bday present, I bought tickets to a Knicks game this upcoming week. We're not from NY so we gonna take the train there pretty early just to enjoy New York. I want to bring my camera obviously to take pics of the city. But I'm not sure if it'll be okay to bring my camera with me to the game. I have no where to leave it if cant. So for anyone who ACTUALLY went to a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden is it a big deal? Just wondering nothing sarcastic pleaseee.

Then yeah, you cannot bring it inside. However, I always sneak in my digital camera. It's one of those that don't have the big protruding thingy, and it can fit right in my pocket. If you can't bring your camera, there are places in the city where you can rent a locker for a few hours and you can leave your camera in there.

I am looking for a good camera for indoor pictures. I have 3 little kids and take a million shots indoors, but the little $100 camera I have doesn't take decent pictures. I've looked into it a bit and have found a few with good reviews and decent picture quality. The few I've looked into:

I have the LX3 and I love it. I also have an older and current generation dSLR and a bunch of high quality lenses. If you are mainly shooting the kids indoors, you want to have a fast lens (that relates to aperture, not autofocus) and you want something that is meant for wide to slight zooms, so you don't need the 20x zooms. Also, with most of these cameras, the small sensor size means that chasing megapixels is fool's gold. Plus, how big are you going to print something?

The Panasonic has a great lens, lets you work in lower light than most of the competitors, and takes great photos. It is pretty much the same camera as the D-LUX line which is easily twice as expensive, with a little different case design and some slight changes to the software.

Hi want to record a video of myself for a speech with my DSLR (Nikon5100) sitting inside my living room. There is a fair bit of noise from the ongoing traffic on the road as my house is just on the side of the main road.
I would like to use an external microphone and was wondering if anyone can suggest which one to go for: Shotgun boom mic or condenser mic or may be lapel mic. If its not a lapel mic, I'll be hanging it in front of my forehead just so that it is not visible on the video.

Please suggest.

Hi chatman & robin - you don't have to spend a lot of money to record a speech with your D5100. Here is a video I shot to show that you can get decent sound with a lavalier/lapel mic plugged directly into a DSLR (shot in response to someone who asked me whether a lapel mic plugged into the camera was good enough for a Kickstarter campaign):

I had a head cold when I recorded this, so I apologize for my pitiful voice and the multiple layers of clothing :)

I used a lapel mic running straight into the camera, with the camera's audio sensitivity set to "low" - something you can also do with the D5100.

I recommend the Olympus ME-15 with 1m cable - it is a high quality lapel mic at an affordable price (UK and US prices below).

You will also need an extension cable and mono to stereo adapter jack to go from the lapel mic's mono output to the stereo input on your camera.

HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras interpolate the video, which means of every 25 frames of video, 4 or 5 frames are taken by the lens assembly; the other frames in between these are filled in by the camcorder inner circuitry, thus giving you not true video. It looks like this -one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, one frame from the lens assembly, 7or 8 from the electronic circuitry, from front to back of the video. Near impossible to edit, even when you have the Multi port processor computer with the big 1GB Graphics card and a Sound card that is required to edit, view, watch and work with the files these camcorders produce.

Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras have 4 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording Consumer Level HD Camcorder and DSLR Cameras, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) These Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras all have a habit of the transferred to computer files are something you need to convert, thus losing your HD quality, to work with your editing software. 4) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes – four different times advertised as maximum record time for some Consumer Level HD Camcorders and DSLR Cameras. No event I have ever been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders and DSLR Cameras or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

MiniDV is currently the most popular format for consumer digital camcorders. MiniDV camcorders are typically more affordable than their HDD and DVD counterparts. Each MiniDV tape will typically hold an hour of footage at normal recording speed and quality. MiniDV tapes are available for purchase at not only electronic and camera stores, but also at drugs stores and grocery stores, making them easy to find while your on vacation. There are literally hundreds of MiniDV camcorders available; both in standard and high-definition. Would it be a problem if I bring my dslr camera to a Knicks game?

For my boyfriend bday present, I bought tickets to a Knicks game this upcoming week. We're not from NY so we gonna take the train there pretty early just to enjoy New York. I want to bring my camera obviously to take pics of the city. But I'm not sure if it'll be okay to bring my camera with me to the game. I have no where to leave it if cant. So for anyone who ACTUALLY went to a Knicks game at Madison Square Garden is it a big deal? Just wondering nothing sarcastic pleaseee.

EDIT: I live in New York. I go to a lot of Knicks games. I don't know what kind of camera you're referring to, but if it's one that resembles something like this:

Then yeah, you cannot bring it inside. However, I always sneak in my digital camera. It's one of those that don't have the big protruding thingy, and it can fit right in my pocket. If you can't bring your camera, there are places in the city where you can rent a locker for a few hours and you can leave your camera in there.

All of the homemade music videos that ive seen on youtube have the original song with the person mouthing the words. How can i record my own voice beforehand, play that, and mouth the words? Also, how would you get the timing right? And how do you put all of the different clips together? Haha sorry im not very tech savy. Is there any specific program that i could download for free?

On Saturday, 51-year-old Darrius Kennedy was approached by police for reportedly smoking marijuana in Times Square, but the attempted arrest quickly turned violent. When the police came near Kennedy, he backed away and drew what has been variously described as a 6-inch or 11-inch kitchen knife. After pursuing Kennedy for seven blocks, officers eventually cornered him, ordering him to drop the weapon and then fatally shooting him. As dramatic as the event was, what's truly captured people's attention is the huge amount of video footage surrounding it.

Taking place in one of the most tourist-heavy parts of New York, the altercation was seen by a crowd of witnesses, many of whom followed the officers with DSLRs and cellphone cameras aloft and later uploaded the videos to YouTube or sent them to news outlets. Brazilian visitor Lincoln Rocha, who took one of the most iconic images, told the Associated Press that he was sure Kennedy would be shot by police once he drew his knife. "If they're going to kill him," Rocha said, "I want to take some pictures, I want to record it." Others had the same idea, to the point where the suspect and police in videos are usually less prominent than the crowds of photographers following them.

But the widely documented event has also reignited a long-running debate over the NYPD's treatment of photographers. According to The New York Times, Boston native Julian Miller was pulled aside by an officer after recording the incident, apparently including the shooting itself â something that was not shown in any released video. "His eyes got big when he saw the video," said Miller. "He went to go show his boss, and then they took my phone away." The officer apparently also told him not to speak to the media.

Police would not confirm to us whether they confiscated a phone and declined comment. If the video indeed captured the shooting, it's likely it could be used as evidence in an investigation, something that is allowed by New York law according to a 2009 directive. According to the Department of Justice's handbook on the subject, witnesses to a crime are also routinely advised not to speak to media, though they may choose to do so. For the police to view the video, they must get a search warrant, and it's unclear whether they are required to return the recording afterwards, as is the case in Washington, DC.
Unfortunately for the NYPD, this incident comes only a week after freelance photographer Robert Stolarik allegedly had his camera slammed into his face and was wrestled to the ground by police after taking pictures of an arrest. The NYPD charged Stolarik with obstructing government administration and resisting arrest, claiming he had struck an officer in the face with his camera and then "violently" resisted being taken into custody. Around the same time, the New York Civil Liberties Union condemned officers for blocking photography at Occupy Wall Street protests and reportedly posting mug shots of a couple who filmed stop-and-frisk encounters. The Department of Justice has issued a blanket rebuke of officers across the US who attempt to stop bystanders from filming them, but it's not at all clear that it's being followed.

As law enforcement actions go, the Times Square shooting was fairly unambiguous. Video evidence and witness testimony confirm that the suspect was both armed and resisting arrest â even if concerns have been raised about the use of deadly force â and officers have legitimate reason to want what's on Miller's phone if it corroborates those details. But after so many cases of police confiscating cameras or preventing recording without justification, it will be difficult to convince the public that they're acting in good faith this time around.

I'm sure it's a topic they are well aware of now. I'd bet money every chief of police in the USA has had talks with their officers about this very topic. It is putting a new light on law enforcement.

IMO it is a good thing. While I feel most officers are good guys trying to do the right thing. Some make mistakes and others are bad apples. The wide availability of cameras is now exposing the truth.

If cops have cameras on suspects and people. People can have cameras on cops!
