I decided on getting one of the Panasonic digital cameras that record in HD instead of getting the flip. I don't understand why the flip is more expensive than the panasonic f3 for example. The video quality is the same and the flip doesn't take high quality pictures the way the panasonic does.

- Nothing. It's way much more inferior than most HD capable digital still cameras. It's a marketing strategy. There's no law preventing you from raising the value of your product as you see fit.

The "DV" in "miniDV" = Digital Video.

The video recorded to the miniDV tapes uses the same zeroes and ones that are used by flash memory or hard disc drive or DVD based camcorders. The files formats are different in that the DV and HDV files (the PD150 is standard definition DV only) use a lot less compression than consumer grade flash memory or hard disc drive camcorders - and no one should ever waste their money on DVD based cams.

The Sony PD150 records to DVCAM video format. It is a low compression, standard definition, digital video, format.

You have several options.

1) Keep using the PD150. Good workhorse pro-grade camcorder - recording standard definition DVCAM format digital video.

2) Add an external hard drive. I *think* Focus Enhancements makes a FireStore drive. If yes, then the same DVCAM format can be written to that external hard drive. They are expensive.

3) Check potential suitable replacements. For Sony, the only one that appears to come close is the HVR-Z7 or the new NX cam. Canon has their new XF line-up. And there is the JVC GY-HM100... and the Panasonic AG-HVX200 (using DVCPRO HD). If you drop to the HDR series, you are in the consumer arena and will lose many of the manual controls that are available on the PD150.

Personally, I would not bother with anything that deals with AVCHD compression. Too much compression does not play well with fast action.

And how are you planning to archive the video captured to flash memory or hard drive camcorders? Have you already purchased a RAID1 hard drive array NAS?

Yet another option is to look into the higher-end DSLRs like the Nikon D90. They do h.264 high definition video onto flash memory cards into MOV files. The audio control is not so good, however...

If you want to upgrade to get to high deifnition, I think staying with miniDV tape is still the best option. The tape is inexpensive compared to the other media ($/gig storage). Coupled with the low compression video, digital tape continues to be the preferred storage method for most serious videographers.

The pro versions would be the HVR-V1U (pro sibling of the FX7) and HVR-Z1 or HVR-Z5 (pro siblings to the FX1000). The HDR-AX2000 is new - I have not investigated that one much.

So I bought a Canon SD1400, which records 720p video in MOV format. I don't like MOV, b/c I can't open multiple files as a playlist like I can with WMV movies. So I want a good, small digital camera that records HD video in the WMV format. Any ideas?

Well the facts are as stated, there aren't any that shoot in wmv. Hey, I don't like mov either but that's what my eos t1i does. I like the camera and the brand enough that I was willing to sacrifice a little convience for the sake of high quality.

I'm using an editor by Roxio called Creator. It includes a converter that does my work in getting to
wmv. It also maintains the quality which, by the way, the cheap download programs won't do. I know I've tried and the quality goes straight in the trash. Retail for Creator about $100.

No. It doesn't. It records in 640 x 480. This is HQ. Not HD. It's an OK resolution. Really it depends on what you want to use it for. So I'm assuming you have a lower budget. I was looking for a low budget HD cam a while back. I finally decided on the Sanyo VPC CG10. I would definitely recommend it! :) I got it on Amazon for $150. Now it's $123 I believe. It shoots in 720p. They came out with a new 1080p version for a little more. Like I said it depends what you need it for. Unless shooting for TV you don't really need 1080p. For Youtube and home videos 720p is more then adequate! :)

Good video quality is important too.

If you need good quality video you are better off looking at a camcorder that also takes good photos, these are far more common than digital cameras that take good video! The problem with still cameras taking video isn't the resolution, it's the focusing mechanism, it's just not fast enough (and in some cases is very noisy). Yes camcorders are bulkier, and the resolution is likely to be only around 7MP mark when taking stills (more than enough), but they are the far better option. You do need to remember though that you will probably get even better video if you opt for a camcorder that isn't so hot on still photography.

My main camera selection (there are a couple of past their sell by date cameras I'm not mentioning)
Sony A700 DSLR - Creative stills and "set up" photography
Sony DSC-W300 (crap) Pocket camera, spontaneous situations
Samsung VP-HMX20C - Video and Stills - great for use at gigs where I only want to be carrying one camera.

At the time I bought the Samsung it suited my needs better than anything else on the market at a sensible price, though very shortly after a better Panasonic model was released, and even better camcorders are now available. It's quite telling that at the time I bought this Sony (I'm a fan) didn't have anything even worth considering.

How about $650? A Nikon D5100 will shoot video at Full HD, but not at 60 fps. For that you need to up your budget to around $800.

Why do you think you need 60 fps? Internet gossip?

If you are still interested in shooting video, look for a real video camera. dSLR's are primarily still cameras with a video feature.

You need to spend some time deciding what you want in the way of a video camera and either choose a real video camera or be satisfied with what dSLR cameras can produce.

I'll admit that I know very little about cameras. I'm going to study abroad and want something that can capture amazing high quality photos especially of buildings and landscapes.

I know I can't afford a DSLR, but is there anything that will take photos of almost similar quality without all the bells and whistles?

I would also love for it to record in HD.

If anyone has ANY ideas, please let me know. I've read about 50 cameras that look good, but I can't tell by reading about them which picture will be best.

I have a Samsung TL220 Digital Camera, and I recorded an HD video. In the camera, the video looks great and there are no problems. When the video is transferred to the computer and opened in quicktime player or any other player, the video has normal audio but choppy video. Can I fix this? If so, how?

Your camera is better than mine, but I corrected the same problem by changing the camera's resolution. I couldn't tell much difference in pic quality on the computer screen but the choppiness stopped.

Is there a good quality point and shoot digital camera that allows for optical zoom while recording a video? Not digital zoom, which just crops the frame you already have and makes the video blurry and undefined, but optical zoom, which actually zooms into what ever you're looking at without the blurriness of the digital zoom. I know Samsung came out with a digital camera with a front LCD screen (TL220, TL225, etc) but the front LCD screen doesn't work while you're recording videos. I want a digital camera in the range of 100-300USD that can film HD videos. Or if you guys have any camcorder suggestions, that would be helpful too. thanks!

I decided on getting one of the Panasonic digital cameras that record in HD instead of getting the flip. I don't understand why the flip is more expensive than the panasonic f3 for example. The video quality is the same and the flip doesn't take high quality pictures the way the panasonic does.

I guess a DSLR could, it has a nice big sensor so low noise and coupled with the right lens [in your case a wide aperture prime] it would give relative noise free images and video at night. Do buy one with an external sound jack though because the in build microphones are usually pretty good at catching wind noise.

So most basic DSLR with HD video + Prime Lens + Tripod [really you are going to need it] and the basic set of memory cards and batteries. Oh and of course an external Microphone.. mmm $1100?

You know a HD video camera is cheaper.. but won't make as nice still shots ;)

When the video is transferred to the computer and opened in quicktime player or any other player, the video has normal audio but choppy video. Can I fix this? If so, how?

A. Your camera is better than mine, but I corrected the same problem by changing the camera's resolution. I couldn't tell much difference in pic quality on the computer screen but the choppiness stopped.
